SHARON OSBOURNE

It was in 2002 that Sharon Osbourne was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer by accident. Treatment involved the removal of a foot of her large intestine and resection surgery in which the two healthy ends of the intestine were re-joined followed by three months of weekly chemotherapy.

Since her treatment Sharon has done much to help other survivors, setting up a foundation to help others less fortunate than herself and acting as an advocate, talking about her cancer.

NELSON MANDELA

Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The cancer was not of a high grade, he will undergo a seven-week radiotherapy course, Mr Mandela will not require chemotherapy or surgery. Mandela, 83, has maintained an extremely active schedule, regularly traveling overseas and mediating peace efforts in Burundi.

Last November, Mandela's doctors said they had discovered high protein levels in his blood, a possible indicator of prostate cancer. They discovered the microscopic cancer in a subsequent examination.

ROD STEWART

Rock Singer had a thyroid surgery earlier in May, 2000, to remove a growth on his thyroid. After a routine CAT scan found a nodule on Stewart's right thyroid lobe, the singer, fearing the nodule was cancerous and might affect his voice, had requested surgical removal of the nodule.

Since undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer a decade ago, Stewart was able to resume his singing career with the popular Great American Songbook albums.

TOM GREEN

In March of 2000, unconventional MTV personality and Comedian was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Tom Green underwent an orchiectomy and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testis cancer in March and April of 2000. Cancer of the testis is the most common solid tumor in men aged 15-35.
