Learning to See, Perception, and the Art of Drawing NEW XAF 429 Seeing is shaped by culture and the historical moment in which we live. Much of what we “see” depends on habit and convention. This survey course treats the art of drawing as a tool for seeing and is designed to awaken and refresh your visual experience of the world. No prior drawing experience is necessary and all are welcome. Explore with artist Mark Leibowitz’s essential drawing techniques, such as creating form using line and tone, and engage in exercises related to perception in preparation for each drawing assignment. Optional Reading: Ways of Seeing by John Berger and An Anthropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales by Oliver Sacks SUNDAYS | MARK LEIBOWITZ JAN 22–MAR 26 | 9:30 AM–12:20 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs | $680 PRATT MANHATTAN

Painting with Egg Tempera NEW XAF 460 Have you ever marveled at the greatest examples of Renaissance paintings and wondered how the artists achieved such amazing luminosity and brilliant color? Discover the ancient formulation and technique of egg tempera with artist Katerina Lanfranco. You will learn how to prepare the foundation with gesso, how to mix pigments and egg yolks to make tempera, and how to layer very thin coats of paint to build color and form. SUNDAYS | KATERINA LANFRANCO MAR 5–MAY 14 | 9:30 AM–12:20 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs | $680 PRATT BROOKLYN Pinhole Photography for the Contemporary Artist NEW XAPO 471 Use of a tiny, carefully drilled aperture, or pinhole, as a substitute for a conventional glass or plastic camera lens harks back to the earliest days of film photography, yet such simple devices still have a very relevant place in modern photographic practice. This hands-on class, designed for those without a technical background in photography, will take a practical, DIY approach to explore various ways of using traditional and modern pinhole tools and techniques. Using a number of light-sensitive materials, class participants will create unique photos in a variety of situations ranging from landscape and portraiture to photographing the nude human form. Students will also build their own pinhole camera to photograph while outside of class. Each class will be a 2.5-hour lab where new ideas will be introduced and then put into direct practice. Students are encouraged to devote time outside of class to further experiment, create new photographs, and prepare digital files. Lab Fee: $25 Materials Fee: $150 SATURDAYS | RA FRIEDMAN JAN 21–MAR 25 | 9:30 AM–12:20 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs | $680 PRATT BROOKLYN

Color Theory in Practice NEW XFA 205 Color profoundly influences our moods and outlook and yet it is often overlooked as a powerful tool for communication. Discover how to deploy color theory effectively in a professional design or fine art setting. Receive one-on-one guidance in learning to mix colors and combine colors to achieve a variety of visual effects with an understanding of the underlying science. Consider the psychological implications of color and the philosophies of color as interpreted by master artists and designers throughout history. Develop your own understanding of color relationships and tonal values through creative projects, assignments, and class discussions. This course includes off-site visits to museums, galleries, or artists’ studios. TUESDAYS | KELLY WORMAN JAN 17–MAR 21 | 6:30–9:20 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs |

Art and Scents questions how we can relate fine arts to fragrance, building upon the language of color, movement, sound, and composition by viewing specific works of painting, sculpture, film, music, and literature alongside aromatic notes and composed perfumes. Art and Scents connects the cultural relevance of fragrance to eras in art history and contemporary art, and illustrates the inexorable link between our artistic and olfactory worlds while exploring the philosophy of the human connection to scent. Creating the Picture Book PMFA 451 Are you an artist with a character in mind or a story to tell? Let an editorial director and an author-illustrator help you develop your ideas in the picture book format. Lectures, demonstrations, and exercises focus on rhythm in plotting, eye movement, and other essentials. With special emphasis on character development in art and text, we will give individual help as you develop a layout with pacing and style. The course goal is to develop a dummy that expresses your personal vision while successfully appealing to your audience—children and publishing professionals. SUNDAYS | STEVE HENRY + BARBARA LALICKI FEB 5–APR 9 | 2–4:50 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs | $680 PRATT MANHATTAN Introduction to Illustration: The Illustration Portfolio PMFA 452 Illustrators are artists who are motivated to make pictures inspired by stories. As visual communicators, illustrators use various strategies to tell these stories. In this course, you will be given assignments investigating concepts such as metaphor, allegory, and narrative as ways to achieve this goal. We will focus on developing a body of work that reflects each student’s personal style, while developing clear and strong ideas. You will learn the entire process of executing an illustration, from preliminary sketch to finished product. Once a month, students will draw on location at the Society of Illustrators. Sample assignments may include, but are not limited to, visual puns in editorial illustration, science fiction, and fantasy for book jackets. Topics include: the elements of picture making, designcomposition, and color; how to gain and use reference; materials and techniques; presentation, both digital and traditional; keeping a sketchbook; and the artist’s book as portfolio sample. Prerequisite: Basic drawing experience. Email Suzanne de Vegh at sdevegh@pratt.edu for a supply list. TUESDAYS | TOM MOTLEY MAR 7–MAY 9 | 6:30–9 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs | $700 PRATT MANHATTAN

Patterns by Design XFA 212 Patterns create visual energy that activates all aspects of our lives. We find them in nature, architecture, fashion, interior design, technology systems, and history. Why are there moments in time when they play a large role in our visual culture and moments when the role of the pattern is small? How do patterns fit into the broader theoretical conversation of our design world? Designers will learn how to use analog and digital techniques to create patterns that can be used as both visual intrigue and tools for communication. By combining theory and practice, you will explore how your inspirations can become patterns and create a family of concept-driven patterns that are portfolio-ready. SATURDAYS | ALEXANDRA GOLDBERG JAN 21–MAR 25 | 2–4:50 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs | $680 PRATT MANHATTAN

The Grammar of Photography PMPH 472 Photographs tell stories. As writers use cadence, sentence structure, and the sounds of words to help advance the story, photographers use light, shape, and color. In order for photographers to communicate effectively, they must go beyond employing general visual principles. Study an analysis of these problems and their potential solutions. Investigate how photographers say what they say based primarily on ideas suggested in the seminal writing on photography, John Szarkowski’s The Photographer’s Eye. Students are required to purchase the book. Through regular shooting assignments dealing with the principles of photographic vision and composition, students will learn how to formulate, strengthen, and translate an idea into the visual form of a photograph. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Design Certificate Mapping is transforming how we communicate and interpret data. Creative professionals, designers, developers, programmers, architects, and planners are increasingly using maps to engage diverse communities and build innovative solutions to real-world problems. Pratt’s Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative (SAVI) offers a Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Design that provides students the tools to make compelling, data-driven maps and visualizations. SAVI is a premier university GIS lab that offers professional training, workshops, and research support to not only students and faculty but also to community-based organizations and civic groups. Through courses in our program, students learn to explore and analyze spatial data, develop technical mapping skills, and apply visual design principles to their products. SAVI maintains a large library of spatial data, and certificate program courses also teach students how to acquire data through the Web for use in various research projects. Proper assessment of spatial data quality is a core component of the program, and using software including Esri’s ArcGIS and QGIS, students learn many of the powerful tools available for transforming spreadsheets into color-coded maps and creative infographics. Increasingly, there are many tools for sharing GIS products on the web and through mobile applications. Certificate program courses examine the principles of design for the web, interactive design, and the technical underpinnings of online mapping using CARTO and Mapbox, among others. Using programming languages including JavaScript (including D3) and Python, students learn to build dynamic web-based maps, mobile apps, and methods for incorporating graphic data into websites and blogs. Course projects give students the opportunity to bring their diverse backgrounds to bear on research and problem-solving. Students in the program can also take advantage of Pratt Institute’s rich history of community engagement by working with SAVI’s community clients on practicum projects. Upon completion of the GIS and Design Certificate Program, students emerge with a curated online portfolio that can be shown to current and potential employers. Certificate students must discuss their planned electives with the program director and receive approval for the proposed course of study. For more information, contact Jessie Braden at savi@pratt.edu. Courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate program.

VOICES OF PRAT T SCPS Austin Robey My name is Austin Robey. I graduated from the Bachelor of Architecture program in 2011 and started Make Mode, a creative 3-D printing studio, in 2013. In the first year of the company’s existence, I took classes in the Certificate in Design Entrepreneurship program. That had a real impact on the direction and thought process driving the company. Coming from studying design, starting a business was a daunting learning curve; but after finding out about the CDE classes, I jumped at the opportunity. Two classes in particular had lasting lessons that stood out. After absorbing the lessons from John Bruce’s class, “Engaging Your Market—Branding and Social Media,” our thought process behind the company became far more focused. We developed a much more clear vision for our brand and our value proposition, and ended up changing our name and re-branding ourselves. I still think about questions that arose from this class regularly. I also took “Starting a Design Business,” taught by Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman. Working through the brass tacks of a business model canvas forced us to be more disciplined about finding out our customer segments and revenue streams. Since I took both these CDE classes, our company, Make Mode, has had two consecutive years of 100 percent revenue growth, and has introduced new products, services, and classes. makemode.co
