Drawing II NEW PMFA 430 Strengthen your observational drawing skills, improve your hand-eye coordination, and expand your personal visual language through this structured class’s exercises using wet and dry media. Prerequisite: This course is designed for students who are already actively drawing and want to advance their skills and deepen their understanding of art. It is a recommended follow-up course to Drawing I (PMFA 429). SUNDAYS | MARK LEIBOWITZ SEPT 18–NOV 20 | 2–4:40 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3.0 CEUs | $680 PRATT MANHATTAN Color Theory for Artists and Designers NEW XFA 205 This introductory course will provide the foundation to understanding color theory and engaging color as an important tool in your practice, whether rooted in fine art or design. Relationships between color and light are explored via a combination of hands-on color application and interpretation, class discussions, and off-site visits to museums, galleries, or artists’ studios. Multiple aspects of complex color theory are made approachable in this course, ranging from the cultural and psychological meanings behind colors to the science of color and the practical application of color in both art and design. SATURDAYS | KELLY WORMAN SEPT 17–NOV 19 | 9:30 AM–12:20 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3.0 CEUs | $680 PRATT MANHATTAN Painting and Drawing XFA 457 Explore basic painting and drawing techniques, emphasizing color theory and mixing, as well as the differences among drawing media. Discover the variances between oil and acrylic paint, brush type, and canvas stretching. Work on class projects that focus on a theme, still life, nude model, or other motifs. Both beginners and “veterans” are welcome. If applicable, please bring examples of previous work to the first class. Students have an opportunity to sketch during field trips to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. SATURDAYS | JOHN MANDILE SEPT 17–NOV 19 | 9:30 AM–12:20 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3.0 CEUs | $680 PRATT BROOKLYN
Patterns By Design XFA 212 Patterns create visual energy that activates all aspects of our lives. We find them in nature, architecture, fashion, interior design, technology systems, and history. Why are there moments in time where they play a large role in our visual culture and moments where the role of the pattern is small? How do patterns fit into the broader theoretical conversation of our design world? Designers will learn how to use analog and digital techniques to create patterns that can be used as both visual intrigue and a tool for communication. By combining theory and practice, you will explore how your inspirations can become patterns and create a family of concept driven patterns that are portfolio ready. SATURDAYS | ALEXANDRA GOLDBERG SEPT 17–NOV 19 | 2–4 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3.0 CEUs | $680 PRATT MANHATTAN
ILLUSTRATION Introduction to Botanical Illustration XFA 467 Botanical art is a satisfying and rewarding way to encounter natural systems. Focus on the details of plants through close examination and learn to record the structure and beauty of the stem, leaf, branch, root system, and flower. Examine the gesture of the plant, arranging the isolated subject on the page, drawing the distinguishing characteristics of the plant, transferring the detailed drawing to watercolor paper, and completing the work with washes of watercolor. SATURDAYS | NANCY GLOVER SEPT 17–NOV 19 | 12:30–3:20 PM 10 SESSIONS | 3.0 CEUs | $680 PRATT BROOKLYN
MIXED MEDIA Painting with Watercolors XFA 459 There is no medium that can be made to offer a greater scope for spontaneity and directness of expression than watercolor. The essential character of watercolor painting is transparent color on white paper. Learn the fundamental techniques through working on a variety of subjects, including still life, landscape, abstraction, and imagination. Water-based paints such as gouache and acrylic will be introduced with exploration into more experimental approaches. Discover basic drawing for composition; brush techniques such as wet, dry, and washes; light effects; glazing; combining ink with watercolors; color relationships; cold- and hotpressed; and other types of papers. Principles of Collage PMFA 523 You will begin this one-day workshop with a series of creative exercises, each of which illustrates a collage principle and forms a take-home reference guide for your use after class. We will then create painted backgrounds as the base for your collage. Following this, we will move on to the process of collage, transforming bits and pieces of paper into a cohesive whole. Basic and advanced collage techniques will be reviewed and approaches to collage discussed. You will leave with a toolbox of techniques that can be applied to your ongoing work in collage, painting, art journaling, and mixed media. Please Note: The majority of the materials needed for this workshop will be provided by Seth Apter. However, there is a short list of class supplies that will need to be brought by each student. Please contact Seth at shap97@gmail.com for the materials list and with questions about the workshop. SATURDAY | SETH APTER OCT 15 | 9 AM–5 PM 1 SESSION | 0.7 CEUs | $190

Mixed Media Printmaking PMFA 509 Create mixed media prints using a smooth nonabsorbent surface. The surface can be a glass, acrylic, or gel plate, onto which a paint medium is applied. Explore different reductive and/or additive techniques to create your images, which will then be transferred onto paper. Learn how to produce unique prints without a second print looking alike. We will work with acrylic paint, household items, stencils and stamps, watercolor paper, book paper, deli paper, and patterned paper. The prints can be artwork as they are, or used in art journals, as collage elements, in your mixed media art, and so much more. Please Note: Nathalie Kalbach will provide paint media and other supplies, but there will be a list of basic supplies and tools to be purchased. Expenses will not be more than $25. SUNDAY | NATHALIE KALBACH DEC 11 | 9:30 AM–4:30 PM 1 SESSION | 0.7 CEUs | $190 Compose Yourself PMFA 518 How cool would it be to come to a class with only a pocketful of supplies and leave with a portfolio of completed exercises that support your effort to improve upon building successful collages? With materials provided, we will work in black-and-white to create small panels that address the fundamental lessons of composition. We will practice editing, using positive and negative shapes, creating balance, and integrating personal inscriptions. The lessons are intended to encourage intelligent choices and to observe, as a class, the opportunities for elevating our work to be clever, personal, and distinctive. Supply list: Students will need scissors, glue stick, and fine line black marker. Instructor will provide materials for class, except for items listed. What a Relief PMFA 520 Create a 12” x 12” dimensional sculpture with purposely deconstructed corrugated cardboard. Beginning with quadrants of smaller sizes, we will build layers of surfaces and will manipulate the humble material with peeling, piercing, and detailed cutting. Inspired by the large monochromatic work of Louise Nevelson, these smaller pieces will be easier to construct, but we will learn a lot as we explore how to achieve interesting details to capture both shadow and texture. Supply list: Students will need a cutting mat, utility knife, metal edge ruler, pencil, and adhesive. Optional: awl. Instructor will provide 12” square base cardboard and additional materials and tools. Contact Michelle Ward at GRNPEP@optonline.net with any inquiries about the workshop. The Grammar of Photography PMPH 472 Photographs tell stories. As writers use cadence, sentence structure, or the sounds of words to help advance the story, photographers use light, shape, and color. In order for photographers to communicate effectively, they must go beyond employing general visual principles. Study an analysis of those problems and their potential solutions. Investigate how photographers say what they say based primarily on ideas suggested in the seminal writing on photography, John Szarkowski’s The Photographer’s Eye. Students are required to purchase this book. Through regular shooting assignments dealing with the principles of photographic vision and composition, students will learn how to formulate, strengthen, and translate an idea into the visual form of a photograph. As photographers, we want to create images that bear the imprint of our thoughts, values, and experiences. The decisions we make—where to stand, when to press the shutter, and how to arrange the subject within the frame—provide an entry point revealing the photographer as subject. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Design Certificate Mapping is transforming how we communicate and interpret data. Creative professionals, designers, developers, programmers, architects, and planners are increasingly using maps to engage diverse communities and build innovative solutions to real-world problems. Pratt’s Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative (SAVI) offers a Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Design that provides students the tools to make compelling, data-driven maps and visualizations. SAVI is a premier university GIS lab that not only offers professional training, workshops, and research support to students and faculty but also to community-based organizations and civic groups. Through courses in our program, students learn to explore and analyze spatial data, develop technical mapping skills, and apply visual design principles to their products. SAVI maintains a large library of spatial data, and certificate program courses also teach students how to acquire data through the Web for use in various research projects. Proper assessment of spatial data quality is a core component of the program, and using software including Esri’s ArcGIS and QGIS, students learn many of the powerful tools available for transforming spreadsheets into color-coded maps and creative infographics. Increasingly, there are many tools for sharing GIS products on the Web and through mobile applications. Certificate program courses examine the principles of design for the Web, interactive design, and the technical underpinnings of online mapping using CartoDB and Mapbox, among others. Using programming languages including JavaScript (including D3) and Python, students learn to build dynamic web-based maps, mobile apps, and methods for incorporating graphic data into websites and blogs. Course projects give students the opportunity to bring their diverse backgrounds to bear on research and problem-solving. Students in the program can also take advantage of Pratt Institute’s rich history of community engagement by working with SAVI’s community clients on practicum projects. Upon completion of the GIS and Design Certificate Program, students emerge with a curated online portfolio that can be shown to current and potential employers. Certificate students must discuss their planned electives with the program director and receive approval for the proposed course of study. For more information, contact Jessie Braden at savi@pratt.edu. Courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate program. Certificate Program Processing Fee $100, nonrefundable Certificate Requirements The certificate program requires the successful completion of 225 hours of study. This includes 135 hours of required study, 90 hours of study in elective courses, and the creation of an online portfolio.

Summer Intensives
Courses for College Students and Adult Learners Immerse yourself in an art, design, or architecture course at Pratt during the summer. All levels of experience are welcome. Every summer, Pratt Institute welcomes nonmatriculated students to an immersion learning experience in the creative field of their choice for credit or noncredit. Our Summer Credit Intensives are individual elective courses designed for the college student and the adult learner (19 years and older) seeking to develop or enhance their skill set in the creative field of choice for academic or professional objectives. Each summer credit course is for three or four weeks and carries three elective credits. Students interested in transferring these credits to their home institution should contact their home adviser regarding their school’s credit transfer policy. If you wish to immerse yourself in a short summer intensive course without college credits—whether to investigate a new career option, complete a portfolio, or delve into what you love this summer—you can take advantage of Pratt Institute’s renowned academic excellence and vibrant community of creative professionals, and choose from among the courses. Most courses are held at Pratt Institute’s Manhattan location, 144 West 14th Street, New York City, unless otherwise noted.

VOICES OF PRAT T SCPS Aurélie Lionet, spring 2016 graduate I studied business in undergrad, but I have always been interested in design and creation in general. As I considered what I wanted to do, I got more and more interested in design strategy, as I enjoy the idea of using creativity and different design methods to develop better products and services for people and organizations. With the decision to work in a design field, I realized that I needed to get practical digital design skills to help my ideas and goals come to life. During the program, most of my classes were on the Pratt Manhattan campus (144 West 14th Street), which was very convenient for me to access since I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which is just a few stops away by train. But I also decided to take an industrial design continuing education class as an elective, which was on the Pratt Brooklyn campus. The print lab and the computer lab on the Manhattan campus are very well equipped and give students a lot of tools for creation. But I also really like the Brooklyn campus, with its nice sculpture park and beautiful classrooms. Thanks to the certificate program, I was able to work part-time during my studies, and I landed a great internship at a user experience design firm, which has now turned into a job. The certificate program director was very supportive in helping me secure an internship and made sure I could juggle it with the program. The classes enabled me to add actionable and diverse skills to my résumé, which my employer really liked. I think that having digital design skills are critical nowadays, whether it's for a professional purpose or a personal one. I see the certificate program and the classes I took as a pillar for my creative projects and my career—something I’ll use to leave my mark.
