Learn about olfaction (the sense of smell) and study the importance of olfactory tenacity and intensity by practicing the basics of the olfactive pyramid: the top, middle, and base notes. Discover the palette of olfactive ingredients that can blend into a beautiful perfume. Acquire knowledge of raw materials for each of these olfactive facets and understand their role in a fragrance composition. Based on these skills, on your creativity, and on your personal taste, write your own perfume formula. Study Abroad: Street Photography Tour of Havana, Cuba Next spring 2018, spend seven days capturing the neighborhoods and beauty of Havana, Cuba, with master photographer and Pratt instructor Federico Savini. The study tour includes guest lecturers and field trips to unique locations. Cuba study tour participants exhibit in a group show at the SCPS Gallery after the trip. All levels welcome. Study Abroad: A Close-Up on Luxury Retail in Paris, France Led by architect Régis Péan, this intense one-week course is based in Paris, the capital of luxury, fashion, and beauty, and the source of an infinite array of luxury retail study subjects. Students’ assignments include analysis of various retail formats to establish an awareness and comprehension of the aspects of applied strategic design. The goal of this course is to understand how aspiration in retail is created strategically through the means of entertainment techniques, emotional connections, spatial sequencing, navigation, environmental and product lighting, visual cueing, sense activation, and social media tie-ins, among others. Students will learn about design strategies to create experiences for a seductive, branded environment. See our website for details. Ceramics Program
NEW
Pratt SCPS introduces a new area of study within the area of sculpture that is intended for artists of all ages. Discover the history of ceramics as well as technical aspects in a range of experiences, including studio courses, museum trips, and visits to local artist studios. These intensive summer courses are scheduled for the Brooklyn campus every year.
History in Our Hands: Ceramics COURSE CODE TBA | COURSE FEE: $680 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs Develop skills in ceramics by exploring techniques from cultures such as Greek, Islamic, Chinese, Mexican, and Native American. Students will use historical examples as a source of inspiration in creating their own clay pieces while learning a variety of handbuilding and surface techniques, such as terra sigillata, majolica, burnishing, and lustre. By looking at the messages in ceramics from past cultures, students will learn to articulate their own views in this expressive medium while developing technical proficiency. INSTRUCTOR: KATE MISSETT
Contemplative Studies
NEW SPRING 2018
We are far more than we think we are.
MINDFULNESS THROUGH CONTEMPL ATIVE PRACTICES PROGRAM Our program, Mindfulness through Contemplative Practices, emphasizes an integrated approach to mindfulness by drawing on a variety of traditions to understand and apply a more contemplative approach to life. Contemplative practice enables a state of calm centeredness, improving focus, reducing stress, quieting the “monkey mind,” heightening creativity, fostering a nonjudgmental approach to thoughts and emotions, and aiding in developing deeper concentration. Through theory and practice of meditation, yoga, and Qigong, students will enhance the practice of being present through awareness of breath and movement. Practical insights into applying the teachings of The Bhagavad Gita and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to our contemporary lives will be explored. The courses are designed to increase attentiveness, help create positive emotions, and gain clarity and self-awareness, all unleashing creativity and cultivating wisdom that comes from developing mindfulness. Mindfulness for Health and Healing Class participants will be introduced to the concept of “mindfulness” and mindful methods for avoiding, reducing, or managing perceived stress. The overarching agenda of these practices is to soothe and quiet the body and nervous system while cultivating presentmoment awareness. The techniques explored in this course are designed to reduce the experience of chronic stress in daily life and the workplace. Stress Management Strategies During our four-week program, students will use these techniques, designed to aid in the avoidance of experiencing chronic stress, in their daily lives and in the workplace. Stress management strategies presented will include both mentally energized and low-impact physical wellness techniques. Students will review the causes of stress, study techniques to recognize how one experiences stress, and methods for avoiding, reducing, or managing perceived stress. Through practice, one can become more confident, self-assured, and at ease.

Art
Yoga Fusion Yoga Fusion integrates meditation, pranayama, and the most popular styles of yoga: Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga, Kundalini, Iyengar, Yin Yoga, and restorative yoga postures. We will investigate the philosophies of yoga traditions, inner traditions, and historical context along with contemporary perspective, and incorporate a physical practice of each yoga practice introduced.
PHILOSOPHICAL TEACHINGS OF INDIA Yoga Therapy The Bhagavad Gita is the eternal message of the spiritual wisdom from ancient India. The Bhagavad Gita (Song of God) is a beautiful, mystical poem within the epic Indian scripture Mahabharata, in which God is in conversation with his friend Arjuna (man). The story in the poem opens with a battlefield scene, offering nuggets of wisdom that can help influence and inspire our modern-day lives in positive ways. The Gita swings back smoothly from the head to the heart, and the worldly to the spiritual. Students immerse themselves in the teachings, intuitively and practically. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali The focus of this class is on key sutras in the first and second chapters of The Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali. The real work of The Yoga Sutras is in the understanding and learning of the authentic self. In the first two weeks, the focus will be on yoga philosophy and the goals and effects of yoga, which are detailed in the first chapter. The second chapter of The Sutras is concerned with the practice of yoga and how to achieve the goal of a restrained and stable mind. Several texts will be used and students will be asked to write a short weekly summary of the sutras covered in the previous week and how they apply them to their daily life. The Sutras exist for one reason: to help the meditator in their spiritual journey of reconnection (yoga).
PHYSICAL PRACTICES Qigong: Healing Powers through Qigong Qigong is a gentle Chinese physical wellness practice, doable by anyone, that dissolves stress and relaxes muscles, increases flexibility, clears the mind, lifts the spirit, and noticeably boosts the energy (Qi). You will leave each session with stimulating thoughts and experiences, physically healthier, and with a very different sense of yourself and of your powers. Along with the practice of Qigong, each session will include a combination of paradigm-expanding mental thoughts, facts, and research, from fields such as quantum physics, subtle-energy research, consciousness research, healing, and spirituality.
Yoga and Art, Clearing the Way Tap into higher inspiration and refine your artistic skills with yogic tools and teachings that empower creative expression. During a yoga practice, you are focusing attention on a subtler realm than usual. This is mental training to focus on aspects of awareness outside of our perceptual range. By examining our thoughts, movements, and breath, we become more perceptive in other areas of life, including making art. Musicians may become more skilled at the subtle movement of their fingers on their instruments and visual artists may tune in to a wider range of colors and textures. By mindfully observing and inspecting a full range of our experience on and off the mat, we pave the way to creating more authentic and nuanced art.
ART AND CULT URE: COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Cultivate mindfulness through directly engaging in a range of meditative and creative practices. Composing Gathas Gatha is an ancient Sanskrit term for “song” or “verse.” To silently recite gathas while enaged in mundane activities is a way to remain mindful in the face of routines that can be accomplished on “automatic pilot.” The practice of employing gathas as a tool to promote focus and concentration in daily life has been made popular by global spiritual leader and poet Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. In this workshop, you will read well-known gathas by Hanh and others, learn to compose your own verses, and incorporate gathas into your contemplative practice.
Hatha Yoga A Hatha-style yoga practice emphasizes physical health and mental well-being through yoga postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana) to guide you to a clearer, peaceful mind and healthy, balanced body.

What Film Executives Really Look for in a Script That Sells XAFL-104 | COURSE FEE: $395 1 SESSION | 2.1 CEUs This one-day workshop will demystify how the film industry really works by navigating this seemingly daunting maze with hands-on advice that is geared to empower you. Learn what movie executives demand in a winning screenplay, and gain firsthand insight into what story analysts look for when reading a script and specifics as to what will prompt them to reject or consider a project for production. We will cover key elements of screenwriting, including analysis of structure, plot, characters, dialogue, and genre through the eyes of a film executive. Learn how to grab a reader’s attention and avoid the common pitfalls most screenwriters encounter. Whether you are working on your first screenplay or you’ve got several under your belt, this workshop will help you hone your craft as you gain a better understanding of the business of screenwriting.
Japanese Tea Ceremony Chado, the Way of Tea, is a five-century-old Japanese cultural tradition and living art form. A deeply contemplative practice that can be studied for a lifetime, the Japanese tea ceremony embodies the principles of Wa Kei Sei Jaku (harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility). You will receive an introduction to the history, philosophy, and etiquette of the traditional Japanese ceremony and experience a demonstration. Draw a Buddha Face Discover Tibetan art and engage in a meditative drawing experience. No prior experience necessary. Mandala Drawing Drawing a mandala is a great introduction to Tibetan Art. Over two days, engage in a contemplative drawing practice, including a visit to the Rubin Museum to view ancient Tibetan art. Particiapte in guided meditations, slide show discussions, and lectures on the symbolism of mandalas. The small class size insures each student recieves individual guidance. No prior experience necesary.

This one-day class will help guide you to getting your ideas onto the page. Marketing Your Screenplay XAFL-106 | COURSE FEE: $395 1 SESSION | 2.1 CEUs This workshop will focus on demystifying the script submission process, along with hands-on tips for how to target appropriate companies for your project with specific advice on how best to submit your work and to whom you should submit it. Topics will also cover advice on writing loglines, synopses, and one-sheets, and presenting your pitch. This workshop is geared for screenwriters working in all genres, and for Hollywood and/or independent projects. Color Theory in Practice XFA-205 | COURSE FEE: $680 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs Color profoundly influences our moods and outlook and yet it is often overlooked as a powerful tool for communication. Discover how to deploy color theory effectively in a professional design or fine art setting. Receive one-on-one guidance in learning to combine colors to achieve a variety of visual effects with an understanding of the science behind it. Consider the psychological implications of color and the philosophies of color as interpreted by master artists and designers throughout history. Develop your own understanding of color relationships and tonal values through creative projects, assignments, and class discussions. This course includes off-site visits to museums, galleries, and artists’ studios. INSTRUCTOR: KELLY WORMAN Painting the Figure in Watercolor NEW XFA-458 | COURSE FEE: $680 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs This class will focus on accurately drawing and painting the figure. Students will execute a detailed drawing of the model and learn how to employ a monochromatic block-in to properly identify the values of the subject. Once the values are established, a full application of color will be applied using thin glazes of transparent watercolor. The objective of the class is to demonstrate how a methodical approach increases the depth and sense of realism in paintings. The model will maintain a single pose for the duration of the class. There will be a discussion of the materials and properties of watercolor. The monochromatic blockin is a key component to managing the proper values in a realistic watercolor painting. PAINTING The Story of Painting XFA-511 | COURSE FEE: $680 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs Join our new figure painting class to learn traditional oil painting techniques, such as underpainting, grisaille, alla prima, and glazing, to render the model and explore narrative. By pairing classical technique with modern concept, we will strengthen our artistic language and more readily tell a story. Anatomy, composition, color, and form will all play a part in each painting, while the model, both nude and clothed, will offer a character with which to work. Reacquaint yourself with this essential expressive skill by learning the fundamentals of drawing and painting across a variety of wet and dry media. Introduction to Illustration: The Illustration Portfolio PMFA-452 | COURSE FEE: $680 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs Illustrators are artists who are motivated to make pictures inspired by stories. As visual communicators, illustrators use various strategies to tell these stories. In this course, you will be given assignments investigating problems such as metaphor, allegory, and narrative as ways to achieve this goal. We will focus on developing a body of work that reflects each student’s personal style, while developing clear and strong ideas. You will learn the entire process of executing an illustration, from preliminary sketch to finished product. Once a month, students will draw on location at the Society of Illustrators. Sample assignments may include, but are not limited to, visual puns in editorial illustration, science fiction, and fantasy for book jackets. Topics include: the elements of picture making, design, composition, and color; how to gain and use references; materials and techniques; presentation, both digital and traditional; keeping a sketchbook; and the artist’s book as portfolio sample. Creating an Artist Folio XFA-461 | COURSE FEE:$300 1 SESSION | .8 CEUs Learn the basics of creating your own handbound folio to fill with your art or use as a portable journal for your sketches, notes, thoughts, or musings. This three-hour workshop will be divided into two parts. Part one will focus on the creation of handpainted paper using mixed media layering techniques. In part two, you will create the book structure using a simple pamphlet stitch and using your painted paper as the cover. Multiple folios will be made and ready to be filled after class. Focus on the details of plants through close examination and learn to record the structure and beauty of the stem, leaf, branch, root system, and flower. Analog Photography Masterclass NEW XAP-202 Creating photographs using older, chemical-based technology encourages thoughtfulness, experimentation, and the evolution of a personal methodology that will make your photographs stand out from the pack—film captures have a unique tonality, depth, and warmth. Analog photographers may even design and build their own gear and combine old and new technologies. This can be done on a relatively modest equipment and materials budget. In this class, students will gain the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about film photography gear and methods so they may confidently embark on their own explorations and projects. The emphasis will be practical and hands-on, and technical information will be explained in concrete, everyday terms. Students will learn the basic principles of analog cameras, working with light-sensitive materials and gaining studio practice that will range from making photos with homemade pinhole optics to manipulating the controls of a largeformat view camera. To compose a fragrance, perfumers not only use their creativity but also follow certain rules and methodologies. Geographic Information Systems and Design Certificate (GIS) As location-based data becomes ubiquitous in our society, employers are recognizing the importance of mapping (Geographic Information Systems), statistics, and visualization. Spatial data requires special considerations for use and mapping is transforming how we communicate and interpret data. Pratt Institute’s Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative (SAVI) has created a modernized GIS program that teaches students both traditional, robust analytical software along with the latest interactive tools and coding skills. This, along with a heavy emphasis on design, enables students to make compelling, data-driven maps and visualizations to solve real-world problems. Course projects give students the opportunity to bring their diverse, multidisciplinary backgrounds to bear on research and problem-solving. Students in the program can also take advantage of Pratt Institute’s rich history of community engagement by working with SAVI’s community clients on practicum projects. Upon completion of the GIS and Design Certificate program, students emerge with a curated online portfolio that can be shown to current and potential employers. A lot more than you might think. This course will ensure that you are a census data rock star and will dig deep into important considerations such as the statistical margin of error, impacts of geographic scale, and time frame of study. You will also learn how to use PUMS data and how to apply dasymetric mapping, which allows for census data to be assigned to appropriate land uses within census geographies to produce more realistic maps of population density and distribution. Architecture for Emergency Response NEW XT-700 | COURSE FEE: $400 1 SESSION | 7 AIA/HSW LUs The increase of global disasters in recent years, brought on by global warming (or climate weirding) and other factors, has increased worldwide thinking about how to prepare, design, mitigate, and implement readiness for disaster events. This course will explore those questions and others in an effort to understand what makes designing for emergency response a unique challenge. You will study: •• the history of emergency response management: How does emergency response generally work? What is an emergency response plan? •• various well-known disasters and how they were responded to, such as the San Francisco earthquake (1906), Hurricane Katrina (2005), Haiti earthquake (2010), and Hurricane Sandy (2013) Participants will be asked to examine how a project that takes into consideration the local skills available and the local materials that are at hand might (while solving the basic problems of shelter) take the community toward a more sustainable future. These and other ideas will be explored. The final third of the course day will pose a disaster situation that teams of students will be asked to respond to in order for the group to evaluate.

Biophilic Design: Where Health and Sustainability Meet XT-810 | COURSE FEE: $800 2 SESSIONS | 14 AIA/HSW LUs, 14 PDHs “We only sustain what we love.” This course builds on our innate human spatial preferences, their origins, purpose, and relevance for designers in meeting today’s environmental and health challenges. It explores the science, building blocks, patterns, and elements of biophilic design, where the experience of physiological well-being reveals itself as the most viable path to sustainability. Participants will engage in guided hands-on biophilic interventions in the classroom, and as a “take-away” will have a sense of “biophilic method,” as well as the experience of a paradigm shift in their own design approach. After a summary review, we will discuss current science updates and dive into a series of case studies of biophilic buildings and biophilic interventions, studying the methodology’s project applications and physiological implications in element/pattern detail. We will venture into the intersections between biophilic design and biomimicry, discuss bio-inspired design processes in general and biomimetic building products in particular. You will learn key elements of a biophilic-design-focused design charrette process. In hands-on interventions, we will tackle biophilic improvements to a selection of local places and buildings. Case studies of buildings erected with and without these principles will be studied and compared. Symbolic and cultural aspects in architecture will be examined, including what constitutes a harmonious landscape in accordance with Feng Shui principles. Discussions regarding what benefits the occupants, as well as the interests of the public, will be covered. Examination of Feng Shui strategies that have been used in luxury buildings and in entire cities will be explored. Examine the various aspects of off-site fabrication. Discuss the details of timeline comparison between off-site and conventional projects. Identify the physical components of a prefab project and look at the workflow and the composition of the project team. Special considerations need to be taken into account in an off-site fabrication project. What are the special drawings that are required and how does the very nature of drawing sets change? Look at the benefits of prefab and its sustainable aspects. Examine case studies to address specific issues that arise on a project basis. View photographs and drawings of work that the lecturer has performed at an off-site fabrication company in London for the affordable housing market. INSTRUCTOR: MICHAEL HARDIMAN, AIA, NCARB Placemaking in the Urban Environment PMPD-753 | COURSE FEE: $400 1 SESSION | 7 AIA/HSW LUs, 7 PDHs Placemaking is a people-centered approach to the planning, design, and management of public spaces that promotes opportunities for moving, gathering, and connecting. These spaces are not simply the leftovers between buildings, but are designed elements in themselves, working in conjunction with the buildings that surround them. Placemaking views the creation of successful public spaces as the first step of a comprehensive design, which informs the location of components of the urban fabric, creating spaces that are valued by the community. Please note: Utilizing case studies and historic examples—both successful and unsuccessful— this seminar will examine the civic, planning, design, and social/political issues unique to public urban places. We will explore the qualities and uses of places that provide physical and emotional connections between people and the urban environment as well as the range of qualities that make public places. Downtown Revitalization Certificate This certificate program provides professionals and advanced/graduate-level students the introductory knowledge and skills required to meet the needs of government, business, and nonprofits to plan, design, and implement efforts for the downtown revitalization of their communities and their Main Streets/Commercial Corridor Districts, and to help meet the goals of federal, state, and local programs such as U.S. HUD—Community Development Block Grants, the NYS Office of Community Renewal’s New York Main Street program, and NYC-Small Business Service’s Storefront Improvement program. This program introduces cutting-edge best practices, case studies, and tools, and is of particular value to architects, urban designers and planners (both private-sector and public-sector/municipalities), Main Street managers, Business Improvement Districts and their staff, Chambers of Commerce and community planning groups, and many more. A healthy downtown is both a symbol of community pride and history and a civic and social center for positive interaction. Current issues include revitalizing, restoring, and preserving the scale and character of our downtowns and Main Street communities; encouraging and maintaining small, independent (“mom and pop”) businesses; improving the aesthetics of facades, signs, awnings, streetscapes, civic plazas, and traffic/street intersection-crossings for pedestrians and bicycles; and placemaking and historic preservation. Students will learn how to assess, organize, plan, and implement design and revitalization efforts into the downtown/Main Street districts of their communities. A specific two-part (14-hour) Downtown/Main Street Strategy course will require students to apply and implement what they learn from all eight courses in this program to the downtown/Main Street district of their own town or neighborhood. Students will design and present a project (of their own downtown/Main Street district) during the program—culminating in a final review at the end of the Capstone course.

Imagine Reach Dream PreCollege programs during the summer, fall, and spring semesters provide high school students with rigorous college-level art, design, and creative thinking courses modeled after Pratt Institute’s undergraduate offerings. Classes are taught by Pratt faculty who are committed to sharing their expertise in the fields of art and design. Students enrolled in credit-bearing PreCollege classes receive elective credits accepted at Pratt and most colleges and universities. SUMMER PRECOLLEGE Each summer for the month of July, Pratt Institute’s PreCollege program welcomes more than 400 high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to our Brooklyn campus where they encounter life as an art and design college student. Reflecting Pratt’s academic culture, PreCollege students are immersed in their studio practice and actively participate in a rigorous full schedule of classes. Beyond enjoying the beauty of Pratt’s campus in classes or taking advantage of our state-of-the-art equipment and studio spaces, students are provided with opportunities after class and during weekends to explore New York City through lectures and cultural and social events. PreCollege students get a head start on college by living and studying with peers from across the country and around the world. Immerse yourself in every aspect of urban culture, from popular music and film to underground art and international cuisine, using culture as a lens to examine issues of race, class, and gender. Field trips around New York City will foster your ability to assess and write critically on selected norms of culture. This major course allows students to choose either art or writing foundations and is for those who are interested in exploring the professional worlds of writers/journalists/critics and who are drawn to issues of contemporary culture. Digital Arts: Art and Electronics This course provides the foundation for creating multisensory art with hardware electronics and software code. Students will learn the basics of using sensors to gather data from the physical world, coding programs on a micro-controller board, and controlling motors that make objects move. Focus will be on creating physical, interactive art objects that possess visual, kinetic, and sonic qualities. No previous experience with electronics or coding is required. Digital Arts: 2D/Traditional Animation In this course, students will explore both handcrafted and digital approaches to the art of animation. From early optical toys through drawing frame-by-frame on paper to creating digitally composited layers of movement for a fully realized project with sound and color, students will experience a wide range of animation techniques. Daily exercises range from traditional character animation to more experimental techniques, allowing students to foster their own vision in the discipline. These exercises will lead to the production of a short animated film in the style of the student’s choice, which will be showcased at the final exhibition. Fashion Design This course offers an introduction to the fashion industry in New York City. Various aspects of design, inspiration, and terminology will be explored. Experiment with designers’ techniques in sketching and illustration and develop basic skills in collection development. Jewelry/Metal Arts Jewelry has a rich history, from the earliest examples of personal adornment to the thriving world of contemporary jewelry. This course is an introduction to basic direct metal fabrication techniques for jewelry and small-scale metal objects. Students will research and develop design concepts and execute finished pieces using nonferrous metals combined with alternative materials and current technology.
Illustration (Digital) This introductory course explores ways to tell a story through creating digital images that communicate new ideas for editorial and commercial purposes. The world of illustration has moved rapidly into the new millennium. The computer has created countless new and exciting opportunities for illustrators. In this elective course, students will analyze the current styles employed in today’s illustration field and explore directions for the future. Students will develop technical and artistic skills in drawing while experimenting with scanning, digital photography, internet research, and using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software. Students will be expected to produce finished professional-level digital work. Illustration (Traditional) Tell a story without using words. This course explores ways to create pictures that communicate new ideas. Students develop technical and artistic skills in drawing and painting for use in the commercial world, enhancing illustration skills through life studies, experimenting with a variety of media, and cultivating their imagination. Industrial Design Create objects that meet the everyday needs of society. This major course examines how embracing today’s social, physical, and ecological needs presents opportunities for creative design. Through drawing and modelmaking, students explore, challenge, and redefine the forms and inventions with which we live.

Film/Video Explore the aesthetic and craft of filmmaking through individual hands-on projects. Using digital video, students will produce short film projects designed to develop both a technical competence and an appreciation of the power and creative potential of the moving image. Camera and editing equipment will be provided. Photography: Black-and-White Analog Capture life in the moment. Students study 35mm camera operations, lighting techniques, and darkroom procedures to achieve a broad-based knowledge of black-and-white photography. Instruction includes exposing and developing film, making contact prints, and enlarging and finishing photographs. Color photography will be introduced. A limited number of 35mm cameras may be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Photography: Digital Learn the basics of digital imaging: scanning, shooting, using graphic software, and various forms of manipulating and outputting images. Using primarily Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, students will develop imagery and improve conceptual and technical skills while incorporating art elements and the principles of design. Familiarity with a computer is helpful, but not necessary. Students must have access to a digital camera. Sculpture Delve into a variety of processes and materials in the making of a three-dimensional sculpture. Life-casting, mold-making, plaster, and basic woodworking will be explored. Contemporary sculpture and artists will be introduced as they relate to the projects and processes learned. Students will leave with a greater knowledge of contemporary sculpture and the ability to create unique works of their own.
Sequential Art and The Comic Book Explore the art of pictorial storytelling, combining images and text to create visual narratives for single-panel illustrations, comic strips/books, and graphic novels. Investigate all aspects of this art form, from drawing techniques, lettering, and inking to composition, perspective/camera angles, panel sequences, and developing your own original stories. Skills acquired provide a foundation for creative processes such as children’s book illustration, storyboards for film and television production, and animation. Foundation Courses Students who enroll in a major course in art or design classes will automatically be enrolled in the Foundation of Art and Design course. Students will develop their skills in using color, shape, line, movement, and other formal concepts basic to professional study in all areas of art and design. Students enrolled in Creative Writing will be automatically enrolled in a Foundation of Writing course. Students will further develop fundamental writing and critical analysis skills for application to their area of study. The Cultural Studies major allows students to choose either art or writing foundations. Modeled after Pratt’s first-year Foundation program and taught by professional artists, designers, and writers, this course will expand your thinking, strengthen your portfolio, and provide a basis for further study. The Foundation course is worth two credits and is designed to complement the two-credit major choice. Transcripts will reflect a letter grade from this class.
Portfolio Development A professional portfolio can be vital in gaining admission into college. This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of portfolio development. Students will learn what to include in their portfolios—based on standards set by top colleges—and investigate the basic technical skills for developing a professional portfolio. Upon completion of this course, students will be given the opportunity to have their portfolios reviewed by a Pratt admissions counselor to help them gain a firsthand understanding of what might be expected by one of the top colleges. This course is a noncredit class offering a pass/fail grade.
Art History This course will use the culturally rich resources of New York City to help students experience key elements of the history of art. Students will explore the many functions of art and the stylistic differences and similarities across historical periods. The course also serves as a complement to studio classes, helping students find meaningful connections between art history and the development of their own work. Solidworks XIND-109 | COURSE FEE: $1,212 10 SESSIONS | 3 CEUs Students will learn to build virtual 3D models of parts and assemblies using Solidworks (parametric CAD software). Topics include: learning the interface, communicating design intent, building parts and assemblies using solid features, producing 2D drawings from Solidworks models, 2D and 3D sketch tools, associative relationships and parametric constraints, and basic rendering. Computer Labs The Pratt Manhattan Center computer lab is open seven days a week and offers professional scanning, printing, and finishing options for students to utilize for assignment completion. Two hours of lab time are available per week for those taking 10- to 15-session courses. Students must show their student ID to enter the lab.

OneKey Access, Pratt ID Access to student benefits and Pratt buildings requires a Pratt ID and OneKey access. Upon successful registration for a course, a login and password will be mailed to your street address. Allow 24 hours for processing after registration. ACADEMIC POLICIES Changes to Policies, Procedures, and Fees Pratt Institute SCPS reserves the right to make changes to any of the information listed in this catalog when necessary. We make every effort to notify students of any changes in a timely fashion. However, courses are sometimes cancelled as late as the day of the first meeting. For this reason, it is vital that we have students’ correct phone numbers and email addresses on file at all times. Please visit our website for the most up-to-date information regarding course details. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) Students may receive CEUs for any successfully completed course upon request. Pratt adheres to the industry formula of 10 classroom hours equals 1 CEU. Additionally, Pratt Institute SCPS is an authorized provider of CEUs for the American Institute of Architects (AIA). AIA-approved courses are specifically noted throughout the catalog and website. Course Cancellation Pratt Institute SCPS reserves the right to cancel any class that has insufficient enrollment. If you enroll in a course that is cancelled, you are notified and given the option of substituting another course or receiving a full refund. Refunds may take up to 60 days to process. International Students Specific programs are available to international students who meet the I-20 requirements of an F1 visa. For advisement, contact our office. Photographs and Videos Photos and videos of students and their artwork may be taken for the purpose of promoting Pratt Institute SCPS programming on our website and social media, and in our catalogs. If you are currently registered for a Pratt Institute SCPS course and would like to request that your photo or video not be taken or shared, please email us at prostudy@pratt.edu so we may advise the photographer during class. All photos or videos are property of Pratt Institute SCPS. Supplies and Books Students may be required to purchase books and/or specific supplies for a course. Grades and Transcripts Grades are issued according to the type of program courses taken. Transcripts are available for a fee of $5. Fees All fees are due at the time of registration, are nonrefundable, and are not subject to discount. Special Fees Any lab, model, studio, materials, or other fees appear with the course description and must be paid at the time of registration with the tuition fee. Certificate Application Fee Certificate candidates pay an additional $100 fee per certificate. Uncollectible Check Fee A $25 surcharge will be imposed for processing any uncollectible checks.

Veterans Veterans should consult the Veterans Administration Regional Office to verify their benefits. A letter from the VA confirming benefits must accompany the student’s registration form. Discounts Senior citizens (age 65 or older) and Pratt alumni are entitled to a 10 percent discount on tuition. Discounts apply only once and apply to the current semester only. Discounts are not retroactive and do not apply to special fees. Pratt faculty and staff members may be eligible for tuition remission subject to the established guidelines set by the Pratt Institute Human Resources Office. Tuition remission is permitted only after sufficient registration by paid students has been attained. Refunds Withdrawals and refund requests can be faxed, emailed, or mailed to SCPS. All requests must be made in writing. Refunds are computed from the date and time that written or electronic notice of withdrawal is received in our office. Allow 60 days for refunds to be processed. •• 2 business days before first meeting: 100% tuition refund •• 2 business days before second meeting: 80% tuition refund •• 2 business days before third meeting: 60% tuition refund •• 2 business days before fourth meeting: 40% tuition refund Please note: Withdrawal or refund requests cannot be made by telephone or through the instructor.
