Architecture + UX Design - Evolo Design Competition

THE OLYMPIC TOWER Since its inception in 1892 the Olympic Games have become the platform where athletes around the world prove their talent and set new records. However a negative legacy and severe lack of hosting interest has made the International Olympic Committee rethink their future path. The Olympic Tower tries to propose this path by presenting the Olympic Games for the future. Even though conceived as a conceptual Architecture project we soon realized that the scope of the problem and solution went beyond architecture and planning. The problem being the government corruption and mismanagement related to the games and the solution being separating those factors to focus on sports. The project divided into two stages curates the experience of the user both Architecturally and Digitally- the physical tower takes form through the sporting facilities housed inside, while the application uses Virtual and Augmented reality to distantly transport the viewer to the action zone. This project is also the first time I ventured into UX Design in relation to creating user flows and wireframes for a digital application. ijin

Since the early 2000’s the public support for the Olympic Games has continued to decrease steadily with the largest resentment coming from the middle and low income population. Large protest can be seen before, during and after the games about the expenditure and the relevance of the games in the local economy and if the funds could be used in different places. Reacting to the protest governments have also started to back out with the number of candidate cities getting less every year.

Most of the infrastructure created for the games is left abandoned after the games, requiring millions to be maintained every year. These abandoned structures become breeding ground for violence and criminal activities. Given that these monumental projects are permanent they project a standing legacy of loss for the games. Large political scandals uncovered during or after the games also stay in the media for years further cementing the negative legacy.

The Olympic games are today are regularly being used by countries to show their economic power and affluence. Many countries earlier considered as third world economies use the games as a spectacle to show their “arrival” into the world. To create the best impression of their organizers often take various steps to create a perfect image of the country completely forgetting the real reason for the games- the sports and the athletes competing.

DESIGN IDEATION- THE APPLICATION Setting Goals

“The Official Olympics Viewing Application”

HIGHER INTERACTION With traditional medium maintain a limit to the level of interaction the application for the games will use augmented reality to create a higher level of interaction the audience will have with the players. The viwer will be able to pause, rewind live matches and see a higher level of information about the athletes performance through a phone, laptop or television.

VIRTUAL REALITY With the goal of preserving the traditional means of viewing, viewers will be able to use 3D glasses for a 360 degree view of the games going on. 360 degree cameras placed throughout the tower, put on drones and on sportsmen’s gears will catch very second of the games with various angles for the viewer to watch from, creating a viewing experience like never before.

UNIVERSAL REACH + MULTITASKING The application provides the option to watch multiple sports at the same time which with conventional methods is not possible. The application will allow to record, multi task for the best viewer experience. The application will also allow viewers from around the world to watch the games free of charge and provide closer experience for the games happening remotely at the tower.

Architecture + Urban Design - DenCity Design Competition

THE LIMA INTERVENTION- UP3 Alto Peru is a neighborhood located in the district of Chorrillos, 17 km away from the historical center of Lima. It is in close proximity to a more affluent oceanfront area and the juxtaposition of income levels is very visible. This neighborhood has a history of rapid informal growth and construction on steep sites and on lots that contain ruins of historic buildings. The neighborhood is an unsafe, dense environment that lacks quality community spaces. This proposal offers ideas for constructing safe action spaces where the community could gather. As we analyzed Alto Peru, a particular phenomenon was identified: many of the concrete columns of the houses in Alto Peru were exposed and unfinished, waiting for future vertical expansion. We believe this pattern creates the potential to create different action spaces on top of the neighborhood. These elevated community spaces would supplement the streets and create additional gathering spaces that are more flexible and could support a range of uses not possible or safe at ground level. While designing the proposal we visited Alto Peru and constantly worked with the community, the process of sitting woth with the residents in their homes and hearing their stories and problems made this priject extremely special. Even though the project is a conceptual proposal to solve the issues the enthusiasm with which the community welcomed us and helped us to design these elevated spaces made the peoject so sucessful. DISCOVERING THE PROBLEM Major Issues

Alto Peru’s Story

LACK OF OPEN SPACES Alto Peru developed as a poor neighborhood in which the residents maximized the use of their land by building on every inch of the plot. Because of this no public buildings or yard spaces were left to be used. As most of the neighborhood grew unplanned and no plans were created for open green spaces. Today because of this density any future plans to create these spaces are not possible and with people constantly coming in, the community is getting more dense.

1600s - BEGINNING OF ALTO PERU, CHORRILLOS

COMMUNITY SPACES - THE STREETS In an absence of these open spaces, the people usually take over the narrow and busy streets. These streets are specially used by children which becomes their main playing space- increasing risks of accidents and injuries. They are also used for various functions and events during which the whole street is sometimes blocked by people. Throughout the day people can see sitting, working or been sleeping on the sidewalks to escape the small apartment.

1800’s- EARTHQUAKE/ FIRE/ ABANDONMENT/ MOVE IN- OUT

UNHEALTHY ENVIRONMENT Because of the lack of city servicies in the area most of the trash is normally left on the streets which attracts dogs, cats and other animals. Children playing on the streets are especially vulnerable to these hazzards are frequently getting bitten or sick from playing outside. A large dense enviornment has also caused the residents to become irritable and constant fights break out in the area. 1800’s- EARTHQUAKE/ FIRE/ ABANDONMENT/ MOVE IN- OUT 19

WLCOME TO ALTO PERU! Growing UP

As the site was a residential area we constantly worked with the residents about their issues and what would they wanted our intervention to result into, the following are some of the main points provided. REPLACING THE STREETS AS THE PRIMARY OPEN SPACE AVAILABLE TO THE COMMUNITY CREATION OF LARGE CONNECTED OPEN SPACES INSTEAD OF SEPARATED ONES TO BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER.

21

Development - a continuous platform system

DEVELOPING THE CONCEPT

UP - LIFT The concept of Uplift comes from intention to use open community spaces to create a positive environment for the residents living in Alto Peru. In the absence of any gather public the community has become been divided into fragments and has not been able to come together which has affect their growth and the amount of help they are able to achieve from the government.

UP - GATHER The concept of Upgather tries to bring people to gather to create a stronger community. While the time we were there we could see kids playing soccer on the streets, only to be broken when a car passesby normally extremely fast. Whenever ths happened one could tell how dangerous the situation was and a new system is required to gather everyone in quality spaces.

UP - GRADE The concept of upgrade tries to upgrade the current infrastructure instead of breaking everything down and starting from scratch. People have been living in their current houses for decades and we found it to be unethical to take everyone out to create our proposal hence we focused to upgrade the present infrastructure and use it as the basis of our design. Hence we decided to follow the Alto Peru tent to build up using the current infrastructure. 22

Connecting

Preserving the uniqueness of individual houses while connecting them with ramps, and stairs to create a connected system of elevated open spaces which brings the community together and replaces the streets as the primary open spaces.

24

CREATING A COMMUNITY The goal of our elevated community spaces was to connect the people and provide them with an open space to enjoy. To create that sense of community we choose one block in the neighbourhood and documented it’s apartments, residents, streets etc and placed our program on it to check the real life implications of the system.

BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES Seattle is a city which has always taken pride in its relation to nature. But as the city is growing and public infrastructure is being developed that relation is deteriorating. This project challenges us to bring back this relationship by revitalizing the Seattle waterfront which is currently being developed with the removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Blurring the Boundaries is a project which investigates this relationship and brings it into architecture at the waterfront in Seattle. The project extends the boundary of the city into the Elliot Bay to create a public park over water. Our main program the Thermal Baths are scattered around the park representing “nature” while the Walls- an extension of the City Grid represents “Manmade” wraps around them to create spaces of indirect interaction. Our Secondary program the Marine Research Institute floats above the park taking form following the walls, allowing people learn about marine life and appreciate the relation between man and nature. DISCOVERING THE PROBLEM Seattle’s Waterfront Problem THE GREAT DIVIDE

Alaskan Way Viaduct

Years of vehicular centric development has resulted in Seattle having major highways going through the city dividing communities. The breaking point came when the Alskan Way Viaduct finished construction and people exclaimed “My God, what did we do?”. The Viaduct seprated the city from its waterfront, creating a visual of raised concrete when one sees the Elliot Bay from the city. Today the city is taking steps to reconnect the city wih its waterfront again

Seattle Waterfront

NATRUE AND MAN for the longest time Seattle has taken pride in being a city connected to nature. The mountians and the waterfront has made Seattle into a pictureque city. But as the city grows and becomes a center for th tech industry the gap between nature and man is increasing at an alarming rate. As people become more informed about the situation the interest in going back to the earlier relationship is only increasing Pikes Market

RECONNECTING TO THE WATERFRONT The city of Seattle has finally taken steps reconnect the city with its waterfront. The project includes removing the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the Elliot Way, creating underground highways instead. The project also includes more than 20 acres of green public space which would include amphitheaters, museums and waterfront to bring Seattle back to the Elliot Bay.

Architecture - Internship - Times Art, India

PREFABRICATED OFFICE - SURAT This was a design build project which was conceived during my internship at Times Art. The project required construction of a on-site office space to act as a temporary site office during building construction. The project is divided into 3 modules which connect to create a variety of spaces. All the modules were designed and casted with concrete in the design studio from where they were transported to the site using cranes and trucks. As an intern my role was to contact the client and understand their needs, creating prototypes and translating them into spaces. I was also responsible for communications with the work force which were casting and building the modules in the factory.
