welcome to koh samui Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? Koh Samui

Backpackers long ago thought that they could keep Koh Samui secret, however, this palm-fridge island, just three hours from the busy seaport town of Surathani has become one of the best known havens in the south with idyllic hotelsand bungalows even airport.People are still coming here to laze on the beaches, eat excellent seafood, and be pampered at one of the sumptuous spas that have sprung up all over the island.

9

Koh Samui

Honeymooners and comfort seekers often stay on Chaweng beach which is arguablythe most beautiful stretch, packed with restaurants and discos. If want something more chilled, head to Bophut, Maenam and Chongmoen beaches, for cheaper hotels and bungalows, head for the south. If you feel like doing more than just catching the rays, a host of beach sports is offered, as well as tennis, waterfall trips and even an excursion to a coconutpicking farm. For an afternoon

diversion, you can also hire a motorcycle or songkiao or taxi to tour the island. The road follows the coast almost all the way round, though you should stop off at Lamai to take photographs of the erotic rock formations known to all as “grandfather” and “grandmother” rocks. Remember that the roads here are steep so keep safe in driving.

Getting there There are daily flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui, taking just 50 mins. Buses take 15 hours (including ferry crossing), while trains run to Surathani, from where It is 2 hours by boat to koh samui.

STAYING SAFE

11

ON KOH SAMUI

Road Safety Koh Samui has the highest amount of motorbike accidents in the kingdom of Thailand. If you decide to rent a motorbike please keep your wits about you as the roads are dangerous. Wear your crash helmet otherwise you might find yourself on the end of a loosely enforced fine or worse-a stay at one of Samui's expensive hospitals... Also keep an eye out for the sand patches.

Personal Safety Koh Samui is considered a safe destination, but of course, these new to the environment should be a little wary until they have become more familiar with their surroundings. Although they are scams waiting for the greedy or navie, there is very little duress or violence to contend with. Most people enjoy a hassle-free holiday on Koh Samui.

Drugs Of course, doing drugs in Thailand is illegal. What you may not know is that the drug laws here are very strict and with harsh penalties. A foreigner in possession of a small amount of marijuana might be lucky to be let off with a fine, but any other drugs will probably put you into jail. If you get offered drugs simply refuse as the jails on Koh Samui are not known for their 5 stars hospitality.

Safe Sex We don't care how drunk you get, there is no excuse for not wearing a condom. Sexually transmitted diseases are prevalent in Thailand with HIV/AIDS spreading at worrisome speeds, resulting mostly from unprotected sexual contacts. Promiscuous sex anywhere can be dangerous and travelers and locals are potential sources of STDs and HIV/AIDS. Protect yourself with the use of condom.

Central Chaweng Map Chaweng is undoubtedly where the party is at on Koh Samui. The main Beach Road that runs through Chaweng has scores of small sois (streets) running off it and it is down these sois is where you will find the largest selection of bars and nightclubs on the island. The centre of all the fun and shenanigans in Chaweng is usually the area known as Soi Green Mango, which is located just to the left of the Burger King fast food restaurant on the main Chaweng Beach Road. This horseshoe shaped road is packed with bars, pubs and nightclubs of varying popularity and appeal. Aligning the sides of Soi Green Mango you will find a selection of raucous, full on party bars, all of which seem to compete for who has the loudest sound system. At the northern side of the soi you will find the largest selection of girlie and Go-Go bars in the immediate area. As you work your way further down Soi Green Mango you will find a number of alleys and smaller sois, branching off the main soi, all of which contain even more pubs and bars. the main soi, all of which contain even more pubs and bars.

Choeng Mon Map Much more upmarket that its neighbour Big Buddha, Choeng Mon is made up of a series of bays on the northwestern tip of the island, which are dominated by a handful of three to five star resorts. Most of the activity of places like the White House, Q Signature and Tong Sai Bay is kept in-house, meaning that apart from a few tailors and local restaurants there's not a lot going on outside the hotels. Still, when guests can have their own private beach as offered by Tong Sai and the Peninsula, there's not a great deal of incentive to leave either. Most of the resorts attract an older, package tour crowd, predominantly from Germany and France. This is reflected in the food and entertainment on offer in many of the resorts' restaurants. So don't expect the Thai cuisine served to be too spicy and do expect traditional Thai dancing and numerous Filipino bands expertly playing covers of Western pop standards.

Lamai Map Lamai Beach is Samui's second-largest resort area after Chaweng. It is quieter and less bustling than its big sister, but still with plenty of accommodation, dining and shopping options, and some great spas and tourist sites to explore. The general atmosphere is laid back and Lamai has slightly older, and by extention cheaper tourist facilities than Chaweng, although there is some indication that the area is slowly being rejuvenated. Along with the rest of Samui, there is a steady trend away from the 'cheap and cheerful' toward smarter, high-end accommodation and dining facilities and new resorts in Lamai such as The Pavillion, The Renaissance and Lamai Wanta bear testament to this upgrade.

THE ART OF RELAXATION When you arrive in Koh Samui and go everywhere you will realize that this an island of spa . If you're staying in a hotel, it’s probable that there will be one as part of the amenities. Thai spa culture is a mix of Thai massage and old European tradition called bathing in lavish sorroundings.

33 All spas offer not just single treatments but include packages in their spa menu. These may include wraps, scrubs and facia. Spas on Samui are invariably friendly places with the spa therapists bringing you a cool drink on arrival and helping you choose what’s suitable for you. All spas have a menu, with the treatments clearly listed and explained.

On Samui, spas fall into three broad categories: Massage These focus on massage of the whole body and special problem areas such as the feet, the head and shoulders, and the back. They tend to offer manicure and pedicure here, too.

Day Spas These offer the same services as massage spas but in addition you'll find scrubs, wraps and facials, as well as more packages. Almost certainly they will offer a herbal steam room and an area for relaxation.

Health or Wellness Health is the ultimate goal here, and though there are plenty of massages to be had, the emphasis is on active participation, with the guests undertaking more rigorous options such as detoxification, yoga, meditation and perhaps Pilates. Packages last from a few hours to weeks. Some guests build their holidays around their stay at such spas and expect to learn how to live healthier lives.

LOCAL MARKET

chaweng - lamai - bang rak - mae nam - nathon The word

'markets' refers solely to those areas that are known for their huge range of foodstuffs. This can be simply where fish, meat, herbs, spices, fruit and vegetables are sold, or it can also refer to 'eating places' - such as Nathon's night food market - where big collections of food stalls are all assembled in one place.

37 Koh Samui is an island, and thus fresh seafood is to be found everywhere, leading to a third type of market, Samui's fish markets. And, like all markets that sell fresh produce, these are at their busiest around dawn, when new supplies are coming in and buyers are scrambling for bargains to stock their restaurants for the day to come. Chaweng Market Chaweng has its long-established market in Laem Din, close to the lake and at the beginning of the road leading to the Reggae Pub. Lamai Market It is located on the ring road, close to the PTT petrol station and Bank of Ayudhya Bang Rak Market Mainly a fresh fish market, this is situated right opposite where the road from the airport joins the beach road. Mae Nam Market Two in Mae Nam - the early-morning produce market, not far from the old ferry pier in the centre, opens early and closes early. Nathon Markets Take your pick. Firstly, there's the famous Night Food Market on the concourse of the old ferry pier. The mobile food-carts begin to assemble at around 4:00 pm and in the early evening the whole place is a hive of activity, with just about every kind of food available.

KOH SAMUI NIGHTLIFE AND LEISURE From popular restaurants to the famous full moon parties, Koh Samui has some of the best nightlife in Thailand. Discos, beach clubs, music venues, bar beers, classical Thai dancing, and even weekly Thai Lady boxing... Plus, a huge variety of excellent restaurants all over the island.

MOST POPULAR NIGHTLIFE Green Mango - Soi Green Mango is the most active area in the night time of Chaweng equivalent of Phuket’s Soi Bangla or Bangkok’s Patpong. It’s loud, it’s brash, and surprisingly it’s pretty compact, Bar after bar features bar girls singa-songing ‘welcome, come inside’ as you drift by. But things are gradually changing here: The Russians are coming, and with them Galaxy, featuring Russian show girls doing pole dancing too. There are several dance joints here, It has two main areas with the entrance space playing hip hop and mainstream tunes, whilst the main pumps out some banging house and techno music where you can get your moves in without bar girls lunging for you. The Green Mango Club is hard

41

to miss,Many of the beer bars are so similar that you’d be forgiven for mixing them up if you head back for a second night of fun here. ARK BAR - Another Samui Pioneer, the Ark Bar has been for years. Even though it’s changed hands several times the bar/restaurant still uses the same methods to draw people in with fire dancers, ambient music, dining and dancing on the beach and a relaxed atmosphere that extends to a child-friendly vibe, even late at night. MUAY THAI

The word Muay Thai derives from the Sankrit mavya which means “ to bind together”. Muay thai is referred to as the art of Eight limbs or the “Science of eight limbs” because it make use of punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes, thus using eight ‘points of contact’, as opposed to ‘ two points”(fists) in boxing and “ four points” (hands and feet) used in more regulated combat sports, such as kickboxing, boxing and savate. Koh Samui is certainly no exception when it comes to the popularity of Thai Boxing. The island is home to a couple of boxing stadiums and arenas, which are well worth visiting and that can make for a fantastic night of entertainment. In the days in the lead up to these fights, pickup trucks drive around the island blasting out the details of the fights via a loudspeaker, often at deafening volumes, whilst other promoters hand out flyers in main streets of Chaweng and Lamai. Witnessing a Muay Thai fight in Samui is something you should experience at least once during your stay on the island. Even people who are not regular boxing fans are often fascinated by this intricate, highly skilled and energetic sport, which plays such an important role in Thai culture and society.

BEACHES

Chaweng Chaweng is the longest and most famous one with very smooth sand and clear water. With plenty of restaurants, discotheques, bars and shops it is the main tourist center and nightlife area. Most hotels and resorts are located here.

Lamai Lamai is the second largest tourist center. The beach is a little bit more rough and the water is deeper. It’s an excellent location for swimming and has a wellknown nightlife. Lamai can be discovered by walking as the area is not as large as Chaweng. Hinta Hinyai is at the southern end of Lamai and famous for its strangely shaped rock formations. Bophut Bophut consists of the Fisherman’s Village and the beaches west of it. The beach at the village is small and not so suitable for

swimming as there are many tour and diving boats going from here to other islands. At the village you will find many restaurants and shops as well as cafes and bars. Maenam Maenam is located in the north of Samui with smooth sand and good swimming preferences. Maenam beach is perfect for families with small children as the water is shallow and there is no noise from nightlife or traffic Choengmon Choengmon are located in the North-East of Samui. TEMPLES

Wat Phra Yai And Big Buddha This temple is the home of Koh Samui’s most famous landmark the Big Buddha. Most Visitors come to marvel at the sheer size and beauty of this remarkable statue at some point during their holiday. Visible from several kilometers away and even from the air when arriving on or leaving the island, the 12 meter tall golden image stands proud. At the base of the structure, several shops and restaurants cater to the needs of devotees and tourists alike. Wat Phra Yai is in the Northeast of Samui on route 4171 near the airport. Kunaram Temple - Mummified Monk The body of Samui’s most famous mummified monk, Loung Pordaeng, is on display here in a specially constructed building. When he died more than 20 years ago, he was sitting in a meditation position. He is still in that same position and his body shows few signs of any major decay. Wat Khunaram is on the 4169 ring-road between the Na Muang waterfalls and Hua Thanon. The Leam Sor Chedi In the grounds of Wat Laem Sor, this ornately designed Chedi (Pagoda) sits at the rocky water’s edge. Covered in countless small yellow tiles, it appears golden when viewed from a short distance. It’s at the far South of the island off the 4170 road between Ban Tale and Ban Pang Ka. Follow the track with a sign that reads “Waikiki Bungalows”, and It’s at the end of that. Wat Lamai Wat Lamai Temple is not only the main temple of Lamai but is also home to a small cultural museum featuring artifacts from Samui’s past. and a cultural hall where the locals meet for weddings, funerals and other social activities.

55 Buddha’s Footprint There are actually four foot-prints here, superimposed one on another. Each one is artistically en-graved. They are housed in a modest shrine 150 steps up a steep hill, which also offers a great view across the plains to the mountains opposite, and to the sea over the tree tops. Buddha’s Footprint is not signposted but can be found by going up a concrete slope on the left, two kilometers West of the turnoff for the Butterfly Garden on the 4170 road. Wat Sila Ngu Said to contain a relic of the Lord Buddha, the golden chedi facing the temple’s entrance is a popular place of worship. Many local travelling shows and even visiting TV stars sometimes use the temple grounds here for their performances. Wat Sila Ngu is on the 4169 ring-road, one kilometer South of Hin-Ta Hin-Yai on the beach side of the road. Wat Kiri Wongkaram The mummified body of the Buddhist monk Loung Por Ruam can be viewed here in a glass case. He was placed in it upon his death 25 years ago and his body is still in remarkably good condition. The temple can be located by following the 4170 road South from Ban Saket and then turning right between tow giant elephant statues. It is a further kilometer along this road on the right hand side. Wat Plai Laem Wat Plai Laem is located in the north of Samui on road 4171 from Big Buddha to Choeng Mon Beach. The temple is famous for the hundreds of big fish enjoying their live in the lake of the temple and waiting to be fed (Food for the fish is available at the temple for a small donation of 10 Baht per pack). Wat Plai Laem is one of the most colorful temple on Samui and features an 18 arms strong Buddha statue set in the middle of the lake.
