Spring/Summer 2013 Activity Guide
• Register early! Many classes fill before their start dates. • All registrations are taken on a first come first serve basis. • Mail In & Fax In receipts will be mailed. We will not call you to confirm your registration. • Waiting lists will be established if a program is full. If a space becomes available we will contact you. You will not be charged for the class unless you are enrolled. If you wrote a check for several classes and you are put on the waitlist, the remaining balance of your check will be automatically credited to your account for future use in our programs. If you would like a refund, please contact the department at 650.780.7311.
Refund & Credit Policy- CLASSES ONLY
Summer Camp & Aquatics policy is in the Summer Camp Insert • If a class is cancelled by the department, a full refund will be issued.
• Spring & Summer CLASS Cancellations made 1 week prior to the class start date will receive a refund less the $5 cancellation fee. See Summer Insert for camp & aquatics policy • Students who wish to withdraw from a class less than one week prior to the start date will receive a department credit which may be applied to any future recreation department activity, less the $5 cancellation fee. SINGLE DAY WORKSHOPS CANNOT BE REFUNDED AT THIS TIME. See Summer Insert for camp & aquatics policy • A $5 per class cancellation fee will be charged for processing refunds for Spring & Summer CLASSES - not camps & swimming. See Summer Insert for camp & aquatics policy. • In general, no refunds or credits will be issued after the class begins. • Students who are dissatisfied with a program for any reason must fill out a program evaluation prior to receiving a credit so we can make the class better in the future. Credits and refunds will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the program supervisor. This policy applies to our fee based recreation programs and not to: Adult sports leagues, building/facility rentals & fees, food concessions, special events, recreational (open) swimming, aerobics and fitness passes, trips and class materials fees.

Any person with a home Redwood City mailing address is considered a resident. A Redwood City P.O. Box or business address will not be taken as proof of residency. A non-resident is someone who lives in another city. We have reinstated Non-resident class fees.

Priority Registration is given to Continuing students before resident registration begins. Families must provide age verification with your initial registration. Acceptable proof of age can be one of the following: Birth Certificate or passport. Please call 780-7311 for more information. You must register at Red Morton Community Center. • Registration for 2013-2014 school year begins on May 1st. • A $100 deposit is required to hold your child’s spot for the Fall. • All Pre-K classes begin on September 4, 2013, All Lil’ Tots classes begin on September 3, 2013.
Lil’ Learners PreSchool Age 3-5 This program is designed for children to develop social, cognitive, and physical skills in a stimulating and warm environment. Teachers implement a child-centered philosophy to create a curriculum responsive to all the children in the group. Children will be introduced to a variety of Pre-K concepts including language, math, art, science, music and movement. By creating an environment that balances teacher directed and unstructured activities, children will develop independence, confidence and a positive sense of the world around them. Children must be toilet trained and developmentally ready to be separated from their parents. Please be prepared to bring snacks for the class 1-2 times per session. Spanish Immersion Lil Learners Preschool Age 3-5 Research shows that total immersion is the best way for children to develop a long lasting foundation in the Spanish language. 90% of instruction will be in Spanish and 10% in English. The classes are designed to spark and maintain children’s interest in Spanish by engaging them in creative and enjoyable cultural activities such as dancing, singing, literature, art and games. Through immersion, children will learn the Spanish language naturally and easily as they master basic pre-school skills. Children must be toilet trained and developmentally ready to be separated from their parents. Please be prepared to bring snacks for the class 1-2 times per session.
Add an additional hour to your child’s class. Please send a lunch to school with your child. After lunch, activities will be available.

NEW
Grades 1-2 & 3-5 The program is being directed by Tricia Lord, a former heptathlete from the University of Virginia who is also a Level 1 USATF coach. She will be joined by Colleen McGuire, also a USATF Level 1 coach. Love to run? Interested in trying track & field as a sport? Come join the Skyhawks Mid-Peninsula Track Club. Open to kids in grades 1-5, the Skyhawks Track Club will meet once a week for practices, culminating in a multi-city track meet in June. During the program, coaches will combine technical development, fundamental techniques and fun while introducing young athletes to many Olympic-style events. The exercises and drills are designed to prepare athletes for a variety of track & field events, and distance running while inspiring a lifelong love of being active! Instruction will include the fundamentals of body positioning, stride, proper stretching, and cool down techniques. Track events include distance running, sprints, soft hurdles, and relays. Field events include javelin, shot-put, discus, and long jump. All athletes, regardless of skill or experience, are welcome! Participants should bring: Appropriate clothing, athletic shoes, water bottle. Comic Book Creators with Freshi Media Age 5-8 Designed for younger students, this class allows participants to create their own digital comic book. Utilizing Comic Life software, instructors will teach students basic computer functions and software operation. Students develop original comic book characters and a comic based story. When class is finished students will have a completed short comic to share with family and friends! Animation Creators Stop Motion Animation
with Freshi Media Age 7-12 This digital class introduces participants to the fundamentals of StopMotion animation. Using basic software, students are introduced to all the tools necessary to animate objects, from Lego blocks to action figures, any object will do! The young animators begin by developing a storyboard for a short animated film. They are mentored through a creative process that will lead them to a finished short animated film at the conclusion of the program. Students are not required to purchase objects, although they are encouraged to bring some of their favorite toys for animation. Objects recommended include: action figures, general toys, legos, plush characters. Basic materials will be provided, but students may enjoy bringing their own objects to animate.

Suzuki Flute - Beginning & Intermediate Age 3-10 (3-7 with parent) with Jennifer Henderson, M.A. Music Genuine Suzuki Flute instruction (a special method designed to streamline learning) offered by an internationally-recognized instructor. Hips Don’t Lie, Belly Dance for all levels Age 13+ with Marie Soderlund director of the Red Desert Dance Company, a local fixture for the last 10 years at the 4th of July Parade and currently performing regularly at Club Fox in downtown Redwood City. This class is suitable for all levels, whether you are a beginner or brushing up on your technique. The following programs are open to men and women age 18 and over, unless otherwise indicated. All participants will need to check in at the facility’s front counter to pay for individual visits or to have their multi-visit card validated for entry. Bring your own equipment or check out balls and racquets from the gym supervisor’s office located in the gym. Please wear appropriate shoes. No hard or dark soled shoes will be permitted. Schedule subject to change. Multi-use cards are available for purchase at the front reception counter. They can be used for entry to Drop-in Gym and the Fitness Center. Tai Chi Chuan Whole Body Movement
with Linda Scheer, M.S. Vocational Rehab, practicing Tai Chi since 1988 and teaching since 1995. Tai Chi Chuan is an internal martial art, promoting balance, strength, flexibility, health, and relaxation. The class covers Chi Kung warm-ups, the Tai Chi stance and principles, the short and long integrated forms and applications, and partner movement. The individual begins learning the basics and the form. Partner movement happens only when the student is comfortable with it and is approached without force. Standing massage may be included in order to relax you into the Tai Chi mindset, but it is purely optional. Wear comfortable clothing. Beginning Golf Lessons
TENNIS AT YOUR SERVICE Age 15+ Enjoy top-flight instruction from the staff of Stanford University Tennis Coach John Whitlinger and USPTA Professional Tom Sarsfield. Youth and adult classes of 3-8 students will consist of six hours of instruction. Classes of two students will be converted into four hours of lessons. Students provide own rackets. IMPORTANT: In case of rain, contact the recreation dept. at 780-7311, Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm, within the hour before scheduled starting time for class status or check with the instructor at the court. If at any time the instructor is absent, report to the next scheduled lesson for makeup date. NO POSTPONEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE INITIATED BY THE INSTRUCTOR OR THE REC. DEPT. Unless notified to the contrary, make up lessons will be forwarded to the next normal meeting day and time. The Adult Basketball leagues are once again in “Fast Break Mode”. Games are played on Thursday nights at the Red Morton Community Center Arena, on a FULL sized College basketball court. No Middle School-sized courts here. It’s wide open in Redwood City. We will use 2 Quality Basketball Officials and we use a “Shot Clock” during our Spring –Summer Leagues. FREE AGENT SPORTS LISTS Are you looking to play on a Softball, Volleyball, or Basketball team, but do not have a team to play on? If so, this year we have added a new “FREE AGENT FORM”. We do not place individuals on specific teams, but will provide a place where teams can go to find additional players for their teams, should they need people. Free Agent Forms can be downloaded at : www.quickscores.com/redwoodcity You will be required to complete the entire form, including what sport you would like to play, age, level of ability, positions you play, and a current photo of you. The form will be kept on file in the Sports Commissioner’s office, and only be used as a guide for Team Managers. If you have been placed on an old Free Agent list in the past, you must complete the new form for 2013. Incomplete forms will not be processed. Another way to find a team is to go to the games directly, and ask the managers. We’ll do our best to find a team for you to play on.

HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program) is a statewide, state and federally funded program for Medicare beneficiaries and their families. HICAP provides information, counseling, and assistance to consumers regarding the Medicare program, supplemental (Medigap) insurance, managed health care plans, long term care insurance and other health insurance issues. SamTrans Senior Mobility Program A Mobility Ambassador can help you with many transportation-related issues, including planning a trip using public transit, finding a driver safety class, and learning about alternatives to driving such as community shuttles.
