ASSOCIATION & REGISTRATIONS

As many of you are aware, at the lastest Canadian Speckle Park Association board meeting, the decision was made to transition the breed registry responsibilities to a different company. In light of this decision, many of the younger cattle offered in this sale are yet to be registered. Rest assured that as soon as practically possible, all necessary steps will be taken to get these animals included in the Herd Book. Buy with confidence, knowing these cattle will, in time, carry all of the necessary testing and documentation.

As in any worthwhile endeavor, significant thought, time, preparation and imagination are integral in order to lay the groundwork for sure-footed success. Forty years to the week of the date of The Driving Force sale date marks the beginning of my career of breeding and marketing beef cattle seedstock while based in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Being a native of Missouri, Ozark and Christian County have served as a secondary home for me on the hilltop of my parents and paternal grandparents home place. My grandfather Raymond and grandmother Alta purchased the farm, just up from the Finley River, and moved there in 1929. This, incidentally, happened just weeks prior to the stock market crash that triggered the onset of The Great Depression. Since that time, raising cattle and marketing livestock through the Springfield Union Stock Yards by way of the family-owned Ozark Commission Company continued for the better part of a century. This gave rise to the engagement in all aspects of the beef chain—from conception to consumption. Although in the pathway of town expansion, albeit a fraction of its original size, the house and barns still stand on the hill as you are approaching town from the West.

Canada has always been a part of my business (and pleasure) travel for the last—almost consecutive—40 years. I have been involved in importing and exporting five breeds of purebred cattle from some of the most highly respected breeders since the very beginning. The provinces of British Columbia to Nova Scotia have been reached by plane and/or vehicle from various U.S. airports and ports of land entry.

The Canadian Western Agribition has been a highlight of many travels North. During the last eight or nine years, while attending the exhibition, I included a walk through the various areas where the Speckle Park cattle were stalled. I observed and evaluated the progress, expansion, acceptance, growth and improvement each year with interest and amazement. I began to educate myself on the commercial penetration of the breed; the appreciation of the breed by feeders and packers; breeders embrace of technology and performance testing; and the efficiency and maternal strength of the Speckle Park female. The expansion of the explosive acceptance of the breed worldwide amazed and intrigued me.

I observed the entire Speckle Park Show at the 2018 Canadian Western Agribition. I was impressed at the size and consistency of quality in all the classes. My long time business and cattle associate, Lynn Combest, concurred with me as we watched the show together along with Gordon Jackson. After considerable discussion and libations, we headed for the National Speckle Park Sale and positioned ourselves among the attendees in the packed house of the auction arena. As the sale began to crank up, so did the beginning of Prestwould Parke with the determined purchase of the first two lots in the auction.

Substantial time, airline flights, rental car contracts, speeding tickets (one courtesy warning), Tim Horton’s Drive Thru doubledouble coffees, short roadside motel stays and herd tours have been invested into the Prestwould Parke herd. All, yes all, have been enjoyable and informative experiences. I thank the breeders that have assisted me in building the herd. For allowing the purchases, advice, guidance, trucking, hospitality, breakfasts, phone call marathons, rants and raves...thank you. 2020 has brought forth some of the most challenging issues of a lifetime. Covid 19, unprecedented civil unrest and property destruction and desecration, family health downturns, border closures, sale and exhibition cancellations, political polarization, loss of cherished friends and family loved ones...have all greatly affected me as well as many, many others. Through all of these unsettling and concerning times, I have many to thank and acknowledge for their help in getting through. I wish to thank my family. My Dad; my sister Karol, Terry, Andrew, Emily and Elizabeth Sullivan. Thanks to my Canadian friends, Marci and Rob Matthews and Tyra and Lynn Combest for nearly 40 years of friendship. I am indebted to the kindness and friendship of Pam Kiecker Royall and the late Bill Royall. I can never fully thank Nancy Brennan Lund and Paul Dooley for their unrelenting friendship. I appreciate Andy Cobb and Carol Wojciechowski for their decades of affiliation and dream building assistance. I wish to acknowledge the support and friendship of my neighbors, Mary Anne and Dr. Gilberto Rodriguez, Joni and Mark Dray and Anne Manson—all have fed my soul, my appetite and appreciate the steps in the pathway forward. Thank you Coleman Wortham IV and Ginny Wortham Kehlenbeck, Davenport LLC for permitting me to dig deep. Dalton Payne has been a great friend and has assisted me this year when I could not be in Canada due to border closures. Thank you, Dalton, and the entire Payne Family and Greenwood operations. I appreciate the contributions of each and every person outlined in the beginning of this catalog. All who have supplied seedstock, fed, bred, exhibited, flushed, calved, trucked, photographed, collaborated, designed and complained...all in the assistance in developing the plan, I give thanks to you.

Right Breed—Right Now

More commercial producers and purebred breeders are discovering the unique versatility of Speckle Park genetics. by Wes Ishmael

Cows are moderate sized and you still get the same pounds on the other end as if the cows were larger framed, with less feed,” says Cory Ducherer of River Hill Farm at Neilburg, SK. “The carcass you get, the bonus at the stockyards, fewer days on feed, it all adds up to more money.” Ducherer is talking about the fast-growing, yet still relatively unknown Speckle Park breed of cattle. His family purchased its first Speckle Park genetics in 1995. That was about a decade before the Canadian government gave official recognition to the breed. At the time, the Ducherer family ran cattle strictly as a commercial cow-calf operation. The herd’s crossbred genetics included Angus, Red Angus, Simmental and Charolais. “I see them being a cross that a lot more are going to use. They’re docile and easy fleshing and have mothering ability. You can cross them on other breeds and increase your bottom line,” Ducherer explains. None of that is said lightly. Ultimately, Ducherer and his family developed a purebred Speckle Park herd because of the benefits accrued in their commercial cowherd—which they still maintain—from Speckle Park bulls.

Saskatchewan in the late 1950s, a combination of Teeswater Shorthorn, Aberdeen Angus and English cattle with the White Park pattern. “As you go back, Shorthorn was a multi-use breed with milk, docility and marbling,” explains Ken Friesen of KFC Farms, Ltd. at Abbotsford, BC. He notes Shorthorn and Angus provide the ideal carcass size with marbling and the White Park identifies them. Speckle Park are genetically black with varying amounts of white in specific patterns. The classic speckle pattern is predominantly black with a white top line and underline, with speckled hips, and sometimes shoulders, and with a black or black roan face. There are other color patterns including white with black points and solid black. Early on, the unique speckle color pattern proved both a blessing and a curse for breeders and breed users in Canada. Then and now, stockyard buyers have been known to claim the coloring denotes Longhorn breeding and discount the calves accordingly. Never mind that anyone with any experience would find it difficult to explain how these presumed Longhorns could have so much muscle and shape. On the other hand, some calf buyers know exactly what the calves are and will pay for them based on the cattle feeding and carcass advantages associated with the Speckle Park breed. Friesen has a predominately Angus commercial cowherd. At one time, he also

had a purebred Angus herd. He watched the evolution of the breed with curiosity and decided to develop a Speckle Park seedstock herd in 2015. “They weigh up every bit as good as the Angus calves. They have not given up anything in terms of size or performance,” Friesen says of the calves sired by Speckle Park in his commercial herd. Toward the end of October he weaned the latest calf crop. Buyers took the Speckle Park-influenced calves first. “They get to market easy and finish early,” says Joe Stookey of Saskatoon, SK. “They’re very easy fleshing and marble so well.”

discussing the traits of their cattle with local cattle feeders and packers,” Vogel says. “As an organization, we’re focused on gathering more data and making it available,” says Friesen, the current CSPA president. “Once we start getting more data on the cattle and how they feed, I think they’ll get used more and more.” Vogel emphasizes the long-term success of any beef cattle breed depends on how well they work for commercial cattle producers building calves that meet and exceed expectations in the feedlot, on the rail and ultimately the consumer dinner plate. “All breeders need to be raising bulls that are equal to or better than other breeds in the marketplace. If this does not happen we will never receive a legitimate opportunity for our commercial feeder calves.” Vogel says. Likewise, Stookey is a breed fan, but he’s a cattleman first. He believes the breed’s growing popularity also emphasizes the need for breeders to be even more ruthless in culling. “What will keep the breed going forward is the impact it has in the commercial cattle business,” says Stookey, a livestock behaviorist and Professor Emeritus at University of Saskatchewan Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Stookey grew up in Illinois, where his family had a commercial herd of purebred Hereford cattle. He wanted to develop a purebred herd and started hunting breeds. He and his wife, Gail saw some Speckle Park from the highway, visited several breeders and then bought five heifers and never looked back. The breed’s disposition is what struck Stookey first. “I was so used to walking into a pasture and the cattle moving away from you,” he says. There was none of that in any of the herds they visited. At the same time, Ducherer emphasizes, “The cows won’t come after you but they will protect their calves from wildlife.” He’s never lost calves to the bears and wolves common in his neck of the woods.

Rock Solid Feeding Performance

Consider a recent feedlot trial the Canadian Speckle Park Association (CSPA) conducted in Ontario, comparing Speckle Pa r k- i n f l u e n c e d steers with Tans (Angus x Charolais). The Speckle Park pen graded 80% AAA, versus 55% for the Tans and were higher yielding. AAA in the Canadian grading system is equivalent to USDA Choice in the U.S., according to the American Association of Meat Processors. There are some differences, though, including the fact that Canadian standards also dictate minimum levels of muscling. Moreover, according to Ducherer, a fair number of Speckle Park-influenced calves make their way to top-shelf restaurants via the Certified Angus Beef program, which requires carcasses with marbling in the upper range of the AAA/Choice grades. By the way, that pen of Speckle Park steers were fed to gain 2.70 lbs. per day; they gained 2.95 with feed conversion of 6.5:1 on a dry matter basis. They hung carcasses that weighed an average of 866 lbs. “These calves can be tremendous, good hair coats, thick, deepbodied, easy feeding and finishing,” says Josh Vogel of Legacy Speckle Park at Theodore, SK. He’s a CSPA director and part of the group behind the Ontario feedlot trial and others that are already in process or in the planning stage. “The work that our feedlot trial group will be doing will benefit the entire association. I think that education is the responsibility of all of us. All breeders need to spend some time and money

years more dairy producers have taken to breeding their secondtier cows to beef bulls in order to increase calf value in anything not returning to the herd.

Beef with a Difference

For all of that, Friesen says, “Our biggest thing going is carcass merit, carcass size and tenderness; there’s just something unique about Checking the Fundamental Boxes “A lot of commercial producers using Speckle Park bulls for the first the eating experience.” One of his customers buys bulls to breed to commercial cows, building time have been using Angus for years and have all-black herds. Some are adding 25 lbs. to as much as calves he feeds to finish and then 150 lbs. to weaning weights with markets in his own butcher shop. the first cross. Besides the hybrid River Hill Farm sells about 30 vigor, they also love the docility butcher steers each year to friends and “The world is our opportunity. Ducherer has had Speckle Park-influenced heifers Speckle Park at Oberon, NSW in Australia. “The average is 8% higher calve as early as 20 months and then breed back on time. “We’re really happy with the reproduction aspects of them,” than normal with higher marbled carcasses and better quality of the meat overall.” The Humphries family got involved with the Speckle Ducherer says, noting the breed’s early reproductive maturity. “If I was going to buy a set of heifers, regardless of whether or not Park breed in 2008. Ducherer also points out, “There is getting to be more demand they had a pedigree, I would have bought these Speckle Park heifers from consumers for steak that’s not the size of their dinner plate.” above most that we had this year,” says David Schrock at Leonard Speckle Park genetics moderate the carcass size of many traditionally Ranch, LLC in Sulphur, OK. It’s indescribable until people eat it and are for clients, carrying embryos from a wide swath of breeds, such as amazed by its taste, tenderness Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, Simmental and Maine Anjou. and how soft it is to eat,” Humphries explains.

Adaptable Thriftiness

Speckle Park cattle are working in a variety of diverse geographies and climates. “They really do adapt to about anything. They grow hair like crazy when they need to and slip it off just as fast as they need to,” Ducherer says. Testament to that comes in the fact that the breed is equally proficient in northern Canada where temperatures can plunge below -40° F. as they are in Queensland, Australia, where temperatures rise above the century mark. “We have sold bulls into most parts of Australia and buyers are using them with all types of breeds including Brahman,” Humphries explains. “Speckle Park are very adaptable to climate and environment; they seem to be able to adapt to extremes. They convert feed to weight on their progeny. A general comment about the breed is that the calves just grow so fast, they perform in all areas and are standing up to harsh environments.” As Australians build back their national cowherd after years of horrendous drought, Ducherer explains many are doing so with Speckle Park genetics rather than traditional breeds. For that matter, Friesen notes increasing interest in Speckle Park semen from dairy producers in various parts of the world. In recent

10

“They’re eye catchers,” Schrock says of the Speckle Park calves born at the operation. “Birth weight is what you like to see, about 75 lbs. They get up quick and nurse; their vigor is really good. They have an easy fleshing, early maturing look. Sound, good hoofed. Their growth through weaning is better than most.”

Ducherer notes operational efficiency gains even more importance when considering cattle economics in light of rising land prices and the consumer focus on sustainability. “We have to do what we can to minimize inputs,” he says. “We ran rotational grazing. I worked hard to manage the grass and my cows always had good hay. If you’ve got grass and a decent winter program they come through in great shape,” Stookey says. “We tried to treat them like commercial cattle.” By that he means no open cows and focusing on cows that wean at least half their body weight without any environmental pampering. Health challenges forced the dispersal of Stookey’s Pura Vida herd last year, but don’t count out a return at some point.

Increased Efficiency

“I think they’re the right breed for the right time. I think a medium framed cow is the future. You can wean a 750 lb. calf, but that often means having a cow that weighs 1,800 or 1,900 lbs.,” Stookey says.

Opportunity Abounds

“The world is our opportunity. We just need to get more of them out there,” says Friesen. “The difficult thing with the breed currently is that if you wanted a liner load of Speckle Park heifers, it would be difficult to do.” Demand continues to run ahead of supply. “The strong growth of the breed is just getting started. With overseas buyers both in the USA and Brazil the numbers are endless. I truly believe the growth of Speckle Park will be on par with Angus,” Humphries says. “We have seen Speckle Park be very successful in all parts of Australia in crossbreeding commercial programs and in the purebred industry. We believe the breed has a huge global opportunity and we look forward to being a major part of the breed’s expansion and sharing it with the world.” Just five years ago, Ducherer says it was rare to spy Speckle Park cattle as you drove across Alberta and Saskatchewan. Now, they’re a common sight, he says, and in herds you’d have thought unlikely. In other words, even some died-in-the-wool believers in other breeds are beginning to make the Speckle Park transition. “We’ve got a lot of potential and will be here for a long time.” Friesen says.

COLOR & PATTERN Speckle Park are genetically black with varying amounts of white in specific patterns. The speckle pattern is preferred but the other patterns are very much accepted. The classic speckle pattern is predominantly black with a white top line and underline, with speckled hips, and sometimes shoulders, and with a black or black roan face. The leopard pattern shows more white than the speckle pattern. On the leopard pattern the black sides of the speckle pattern are broken into a series of definite black spots. The number and size of the spots varies greatly from animal to animal. Some leopards have predominantly white sides with only a few black spots on their sides. The leopard also has a white top line and underline. In genetic terms, the classic speckle pattern and the leopard pattern appear to be the same with the difference being only in the number of spots as determined by unidentified modifiers. The third color pattern is the white with black points. Animals with this pattern are predominantly white on the body and face but always have black points, that is to say, the ears, nose, skin around the eyes, muzzle and the lower portions of the legs including the hooves are black. These same points are black on all of the patterns as are the teats. Some Speckle Park are solid black. INHERITANCE OF THE COLOR PATTERNS Following are presented six combinations of the Speckle Park patterns for breeding. For these purposes speckle and leopard are in effect, genetically the same, with only a variation in the frequency of spots. Speckle x Speckle=25% white pointed; 50% speckle; 25% solid Speckle x White Pointed=50% white pointed; 50% speckle White Pointed x White Pointed=100% white pointed White Pointed x Solid=100% speckle Speckle x Solid=50% speckle; 50% solid SUMMARY • White with points is incompletely dominant. • The solid color pattern is recessive. • Speckle results when an individual has both the white with points gene and the solid gene. • The inheritance of speckle pattern appears to be similar to the inheritance of the roan in Shorthorn cattle (one gene with two alleles) and the palomino color in horses (two genes). • Speckle and leopard are genetically the same except for varying degrees of spotting. • Solid colored calves probably can never be eliminated from the breed. • Speckle red, white with red points and even solid red calves do occur because some Speckle Park with black color patterns also carry a recessive gene for red. Both parents have to carry the red gene for their calf to be red. • Speckle Park bred to white faced cattle produces a grey face or a white face. The nose, eye rims and ears are black on the first cross. • When Speckle Park are bred on belted cattle the calves can retain the belt over top of the other speckled patterns. 12

Speckle Park BREED HISTORY

The idea of developing a breed came later. A monument at the side of the Yellowhead Highway at Maidstone, Saskatchewan, pays tribute to the Lamonts for their role in starting the Speckle Park breed. Mary Lindsay noticed a red roan heifer in her father’s herd a few years before and purchased the heifer. This heifer came to be a cow that always produced that color pattern regardless of the sire. It is believed the heifer was a descendent of a Teeswater Shorthorn and a bull which had the White Park color pattern. The Lamonts crossed their speckled cows with black Angus bulls. Saskatchewan, at that time, restricted ranchers from keeping any intact bulls other than purebreds. Even though sired by Angus bulls, the resulting offspring came in a variety of color patterns, some white with black points, some leopard colored and some black sided with speckled hips, white top and underline and roan faces. The Lamonts grew very interested in their Speckle Park and decided to attempt to develop a new breed. Interest in the cattle grew, not only with cattlemen but also the press. A trio of Speckle Park steers made the trip to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1972. They were featured in Case International Publications under a section on “Minority Breeds in Canada.” Around 1983 Lloyd Pickard, a cattle promoter and Angus breeder from Alberta, included a few pages about the Speckle Park in his book

Speckle Park had their beginning in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Their development took place in Alberta and Saskatchewan along the Yellow Head Highway between North Battleford, Saskatchewan, and Spruce Grove, Alberta. Speckle Park were only the second breed of beef cattle in Canada to be granted distinct breed status. Speckle Park are a combination of the genetics of three breeds from England and Scotland: Teeswater Shorthorn, Aberdeen Angus, and English cattle with the white park pattern. Speckle Park were named by Bill and Eillen Lamont. Both parts of the name refer to the color pattern. “Speckle” was because of the spots on the rear quarters and throughout; and “Park” because some of the Speckle Park display the white park color pattern of a white body with colored points about the ears, eyes, muzzle, lower legs and teats. Speckle instead of “spotted” probably reflects a generation familiar with the biblical story of Jacob breeding speckled cattle and sheep to outwit Laban, his father-in-law, in the thirtieth chapter of Genesis. In 1959, Eileen and Bill Lamont of Maidstone, Saskatchewan, bought their first speckled heifer from Mary Lindsay of Greenstreet, Saskatchewan. The Lamonts were breeders of Appaloosa horses and Angus cattle, and thought the cattle would go well with their herds.

40

“100 Years of Angus in Canada.” In 1985 Speckle Park breeders representing nine different herds met to form The Speckle Park Breeders Association. The Association was subsequently renamed The Canadian Speckle Park Association. In 1993 Agriculture Canada granted approval for the Canadian Speckle Park Association to become incorporated under the terms of the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act for the purpose developing Speckle Park cattle as an evolving breed. On February 14, 1995, ministerial approval was granted for the Canadian Speckle Park Association’s first set of by-laws. On July 6, 2006, the Canadian Speckle Park Association’s Articles of Incorporation were amended to the effect that Speckle Park became a distinct breed of purebred cattle according to the terms of the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act. A few days later the carcass of another Speckle Park steer was awarded the championship at a major all-breed carcass competition in Calgary, Alberta. The aim was to breed and develop a middle of the road, medium sized, polled, good beef animal. Thus was born a phrase often attached to the breed “A Balanced Breed with A Color Bonus.” The color patterns of Speckle Park are distinctive and certainly catch one’s eye. Their merits as beef cattle will ensure their sustainability as a distinct breed. Speckle Park have desirable traits which are advantageous to the cow calf operator, the feed lot operator, the butcher and the consumer. Consistent high quality carcass; distinctive color pattern; calving-ease; vigorous calves; maternal; calm disposition; polled; hardy and healthy; hybrid vigor; and feed efficiency. The Speckle Park reputation for carcass consistency in terms of moderate size, well marbled with only the ideal fat cover was emphatically demonstrated in the 2010 Quality Beef Competition at the Calgary Stampede. Speckle Park had six of the top ten placings. The distinctive color pattern of Speckle Park has become a

brand to indicate the potential of carcass quality. The color pattern which was once used to justify discounting Speckle Park at the sale market has become a distinctive mark worthy of an equal or even premium on the price. This has been demonstrated at the Annual Speckle Park Feeder Sale in Ponoka, Alberta, in October. Speckle Park cross well on almost every breed and show every indication of contributing hybrid vigor. Commericial cattlemen are taking note of how well Speckle Park cross on their commercial cows. Because of the British genetics behind Speckle Park, it stands to reason that there would be significant heterozygosity with cows with more of a background derived from the continental breeds. Speckle Park have demonstrated that they retain their carcass advantages when crossed on other breeds, either beef or dairy.
