strategies. Beyond its role as a traditional shopping mall, its historical importance now lies in its evolution into a dynamic urban hub, offering not just retail experiences, but fostering community engagement through diverse events and activities. As Mississauga’s urban landscape continues to evolve, the Erin Mills Town Centre stands as a pivotal focal point, undergoing thoughtful transformations that tackle contemporary issues while remaining deeply interwoven into the local fabric. Our studio’s project involves re-imagining this site into a vibrant mixed-use urban society, breathing new life into its essence.

STREETSCAPE DESIGN
re: urbanism
I focused on creating a well-designed streetscape to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal, creating a pleasant and inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. Moreover, I wanted to foster a sense of pride and belonging among locals, instilling a shared sense of ownership and responsibility for the area’s upkeep and improvement. Thus I thoughtfully planned streetscape that promote sustainable practices, encouraging pedestrian-friendly environments, efficient transportation options, and green spaces that benefit both people and the environment.

to these issues, the municipality has floated the idea of relocating the market to a new site. However, in this project, I embark on an exploration of why revitalizing the existing market area is a more prudent and promising endeavor than uprooting it. My aim is to demonstrate that by re-imagining and rejuvenating the existing market, we can not only preserve its historical significance but also breathe new life into this bustling center. To this end, we propose a thoughtful design solution that addresses the pressing issues faced by the area, ensuring that Vellore Market remains a vibrant, accessible, and thriving hub for generations to come. 23

Within the expansive market area, my focus has honed in on a specific section, as illustrated in the diagram. This particular section holds a special significance due to its distinct features, comprising three vital components. These include the historic old market area, the bustling vegetable and flower market, and a crucial street that serves as the primary entry point for trucks transporting goods. Through an in-depth analysis and study of this section, I have identified its unique challenges and potential. This particular market section presents exceptional opportunities and holds immense potential for a transformative approach that prioritizes people and their needs. 27

DESIGN SOLUTION
re: urbanism
The core idea behind our design concept is to establish an uncomplicated and functional market space dedicated to vegetable and flower vending. Simultaneously, we aim to re purpose the street, transforming it from a mere parking space for bikes into a lively, pedestrian-friendly area that fosters a sense of place. Our vision is to encourage and accommodate local hawkers who traditionally had shops along the street, ultimately making it an inclusive space for everyone. Additionally, I seek to harness the untapped potential of the old bus stand, ensuring that no valuable space goes to waste. The diagram illustrates the core design principles I want to incorporate in the market redesign.

PROPOSED MARKET COMPLEX
VEHICULAR ROAD
PEDESTRIAN WAY
The solution to significant road issues lies in small but impactful changes. Following a successful case study in Bangalore, we propose converting Mundy and Long Bazar Road into a one-way street from south to north, connecting Long Bazar and Anna Salai as one-way routes. To address parking concerns, a dedicated parking complex is introduced. Additionally, to support vibrant hawker activity without obstructing other functions, a raised platform is implemented on one side of the road, complementing the market complex’s hawker activities. These thoughtful adjustments aim to enhance road functionality and overall street dynamics.

Step Four : The site was subsequently zoned by dividing it along the pathway created by the curb cuts.
In crafting this proposal for tactical urbanism, our aim was to capture the essence of Canada’s distinct seasons while also paying homage to the scenic beauty of the Credit River. To achieve this, we meticulously selected motifs that artfully reflected these key elements. The selection of games was carefully curated to actively engage children, ensuring their enjoyment and participation. Additionally, we thoughtfully designated areas tailored for adults and created flexible spaces, versatile enough to accommodate a variety of activities and purposes.

The „NatureVista Commons” project envisions a transformative melding of the Don River Valley Ravine’s natural ecosystem and purposeful public spaces. Through innovative design, this endeavor aims to establish inviting zones that seamlessly transition from work-oriented areas to spaces for relaxation, leisure, and community engagement. By creating this harmonious blend, the project seeks to provide a holistic experience that encourages residents to connect not only with nature but also with one another. At the core of the project’s vision is the notion of unity—unity between the existing ecological wonders of the ravine and the dynamic vibrancy of communal life. The project’s design takes cues from the ravine’s natural elements, weaving them into intelligently planned public areas. This synergy fosters an environment where community members don’t just coexist with their surroundings, but actively participate in its preservation. Through this dynamic interplay, the „NatureVista Commons” project aspires to cultivate a sense of ownership, camaraderie, and responsibility, forging a lasting legacy of a shared space where both the ecosystem and community thrive

One of the key aspects of Strahlende City is its carefully planned land use sectors. The city is divided into dedicated zones that cater to different amenities and services. For example, there are designated areas for residential buildings, commercial spaces, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and recreational areas. This zoning strategy ensures that residents have easy access to essential services and reduces the need for long commutes.
STRAHLENDE CITY In addition to the functional sectors, Strahlende City also incorporates pockets of quaint neighborhoods to create a sense of community. These neighborhoods are designed with pedestrian-friendly streets, green spaces, and mixed-use developments. By creating spaces where people can live, work, and socialize in close proximity, Strahlende City fosters a strong sense of belonging and encourages residents to engage with their surroundings
One of the defining features of Strahlende City is its extensive system of linear parks and green infrastructure. These green spaces are not only aesthetically pleasing but also serve multiple purposes. They provide recreational opportunities for residents, including walking and cycling paths, sports facilities, and playgrounds. They also act as ecological corridors, preserving biodiversity and promoting urban wildlife habitats.
Overall, Strahlende City is an innovative and sustainable urban concept that enhances livability and minimizes environmental impact. By prioritizing walkability, accessibility, and community, this concept envisions a future where cities are designed to meet the needs of residents in a holistic and sustainable manner. Strahlende City serves as an inspiration for urban planners and policymakers to create cities that prioritize the well-being of its residents and the planet
