The Site lies in the city of Vadodara.

Built by Sir Sayaji Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III in 1879. Was made for the citizens of the princely state of Baroda. "The city of Vadodara has a rich legacy of education and social reforms in the 19th century. The establishment of the Baroda College (Now MS University), Central Library, Museum, Banking system and Botanical and Zoological garden were steps taken by the Princely state to create a more modern society. It seems the culture of the city is very much shaped by its institutions; be it a University, Townhall or a library. “Reading Room” is proposed right in the middle of Sayaji Baug. This peaceful location besides the bank of river Vishwamitri is considered ideal for book lovers, writers, poets, innovators and students. The “Reading Room” should encourage people to appreciate the “world of books and literature” and should nudge the community of like-minded people to come together to debate, discuss and share, thereby creating a culture of public life."

The Site lies in the Old Gated city of Vadodara.

Nazarbaug Palace, built in old classical style, was a Gaekwad Royal Palace erected by Malhar Rao Gaekwad in 1721. Made in white-stucco, this palace was the repository of the jewels of the Gaekwad family. The Palace have been demolished and is been replace by some building that is not designed as per the human scale of the older city. The contrast between the old and the new buildings are the interesting factors that draws my attentions and governs my movement. The buildings in the walled city have evolved throygh years also there are many rulers who conqured the city and to the same reason we find a lot of varations in architectural style as well as construction materials, ornamentation and the elements of the articulation of the buildings in the locality. The layers are the architectural style and the buildings in the area. More over the place also has a lot of monumental builidng. But over the period of there is a lot of evolution in terms of architecture or the scale and proportions of the buildings that used to be there over years, Hence the heritage of the city is somewhere disturbed by the development in the retail sector of the area the people are blindly expanding their business in returen they require space so they grow vertically.

Observations

A strong contrast is seen between the art-deco and the adjoining structure which is almost flat in terms of facade and the building next to it has a lot of indian architecure. The art-deco buildings were very common and housed the residence of people with more wealth. Anorther art-deco building with the motifs and the name along with the year it was built in. Earlier we see a lot of elements in a house, like the arched windows and the cast iron railings also they had brackets and other elements. We can readily compare it to the building besides where every element is lost. Suddenly we see the scale of the buildings change and the horizontality of the area is also disturbed. The lower floors usually had a larger floor height and as they went up the floor height rediused. Also we find brackets and cast iron railings. Some buildings are same in poportions yet they stand out in terms of materials used and also the mixed used are now purely converted to 02

comercial buildings. There is a lot of reduction in terms of outdoor spaces as the balconies and the otta, they either have stilt floor on the lower level or shops. The are no space of cultural gathering. The material plays an important role making the bulding in the context to stand out and making its presence more strong. Rhobustness is commonly found in a lot of buildings and the buildings are used until they reach their limit. No maintenance is done to building. Vittal Wada is one such building that has adjoining blg. so opposite to the wada in terms of material and elements, also there is a gate to the khadki. The ACP cladded buildings are in faishon, where we see that there is a loss of heritage value of place. Preservation of heritage is not there. Scale is one such important factor where there is loss in character of the gated city.

The idea at identity always associate with the activity but also the incidents in the history. The sudden context define the presence of heritage of the gated city, and its meaning to the people of the origin. The idea of heritage cell came up from a very simple decision about how the context responds to the site and how there was a need of a plugin , that was for the people of the gated city. The concious decision which came after introspecting the life of the people from the gated city and also the workers who work and runs the retail business, I found it very strange when i found that the ASI Office was on the opposite side of the Sarkarwada and besides the Central Library. Instead I wanted to design a meaningful enviornment that affect the life of the people who are going to use it . Also the awarness to preserve the heritage which was left at present was needed. There was a need of a communal gathering space which wasnt there at present in the gated city, as earlier all the â&#x20AC;&#x153;maidansâ&#x20AC;? were situated outside the gated or the walled city there was a need for a space so that people could celebrate. As a whole my design is much like a reflection of how the spaces and the different architectural styles used to co-exists with each other and what spaces does the people from the orign requires and the kind of enviornment that awakens the awarness in an individual about the preservation of the heritage of the gated city.

Housing In Pune

Going back to existing housing styles and typologies in Pune, and their evolution. And to introspect the whole idea of verticality and how the entire notion of interactive neighbourhood was lost. How commercial housing took over the housing style in the entire city, which is now only found in Deccan Gym Khana. The increasing number of migrants in pune and also the increase in the motorized vehicle owned by an individual might have lead to the vertical growth of the city.For the millennials in the city the housing had to be designed in a way that the spaces should be celebrated in terms of interactive neighbourhood.

The idea came from a very simple thought of, what if i were able to satisfy the developer, the invester as well as the end-user, keeping my entier concept to provide a floorplate that is flexible that it can be converted into three different modules or can be converted into one single module. The investor has to buy only one unit with its shrunken dimensions that can be rented as a single module or can be rented as three different modules. End-User gets to choose from a variety of space they want depending upon their requirement. The building was designed to be self suffieient for the ease of millennial to access their day to day needs.

The Millennium has become a prominent term in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

society and culture. Millennials refers to a generation of young adults born between early 1980s and 2000. However, Millennials have inherited a different circumstance from the previous generation; housing within urban cities is becoming more expensive while shrinking in floor space. The site can utilize the amenities of the city, while embodying the atmospheric qualities of traditional suburbia. The cost per square foot within the city and the environmental impact of larger homes means that a design that minimizes the overall floor area is more sustainable overall. The living spaces are prioritized in the design to keep the essential elements of dwelling, based on the needs and requirements of the new generation. By using a modular floor plan, similar programs can be combined to use the same floor area, while acting as two separate dwellings. In order to simplify the transitions between furniture and wall modules, the design designates five main types of domestic programs. These modes simplify the activities contained within a home into eat, sleep, groom, dress and play. Each mode represents the systems and activities required in our daily rituals. As inhabitants transition throughout their day, the home changes to different modes to adapt to the users specific needs.

Children To Themselves To Physical Enviornment i.e. in the journey of the schooling in begenning the classroom tends to be more experincial but as they grow the intereaction spaces becomes experincial.

Orientation

The physical interaction in terms of physical nature slowly trys to move away from the building. ie, The physical nature is around the building then in the building and in the end space and nature are two different spaces, An imaginary axis is formed that is the displacemnt of the journey that is the major tube. and the property of other spaces are based on the fact that interaction is in around or away from the space.Going back to the point where we drifted was a proportional grid based on that grid the shifting of grid is done in proportions of 1/3 , 2/3 and whole is kept constant. The daytums are created as the main walls that takecare of the circulation is along it. spaces are orinted accordingly. 10

Design

The entire design is based on how we simply translate an idealogy to a set of diagrams and those diagrams to architectural spaces. The spaces denfines the spartial quality of space a classroom space needs. The spaces are then weaved by a monotonus language. The designed is based on how nature becomes a part of the classroom and how gradually it starts detaching. How the roll of different teachers in life like the nature and the teacher, impacts a space at different stages of the schooling.

Abstraction of a Kingfisher.

In this studio we were given a choice of selecting objects from the nature, as we all know that the nature has given every object a structure within itselft. The idea was to introspect a given object and minimalise the entire object and abstract it from a micro level to a macro level. I chose Kingfisher as my base object for the studio and did further explorations as to how the behavioural pattern of the subject was and how did the natural structure of the bird helped them in their life. I explore every bit of it and started with the wings as my phase-ii of this studio where we had to study the mirco part of it and translate the entire phenomena to design. Multiple attempts were done back and forth before coming to any conclusion. The Wings were exploref from the joints to the way the move to the way they flap, how the wings opened up and how did they behave while diving inside the water to catch the fish. Concluding a design that was beautifully developed by how the wings opened up, which was trasnlated into a beautiful canopy.

Helical Stepwell

Initial step was to understand the actual building and measure draw it and understand the elements of the building and to start with a base model of actual building. So as to transform it to a form using simple action such cut and shift, push pull, twisting, smashing, scaling etc.And by superimposing space vocublary terms such as movement and pause, hierarchical space, fludic, axial, directional space, introvert etrovert etc. So as to attain the transformation of the building or monument through a series of process models. The idea was to understand the elements not only in terms of build masses but also the foresee the key elements such as light water etc. And to use them as kit of parts for the transformation of building and to create a process by using space vocublary and form transformation. The following process is very useful in further studio of abstraction where an individual is asked to select a random object and use the same principles to attain a very abstract form of the initial object.

Living Space Dimensions: 12m x 3.5m Area: 42 Sq.Mts. The Particular Residence was to be designed for a client who was a Freelance Practicing Architect. So the space was Studio-Cum-Residence, where he could enjoy working in double heighted space which celebrated northlight through-out the day. The utilities and the pantry in the front, supported by a central courtyard. The design had various kit of parts to it like the plains had a slit joint to attach the other structural joints to it topped with a sloping roof on it. 14

House-II Location: Hardwick, Vermont Year: 1969-1970 Architect: Peter Eisenman

House II is situated on a 100-acre hilltop with broad panoramic views extending for twenty miles in three directions. The design attempts to simulate the presence of trees, which are non-existent on the barren site, through the use of a sequence of columns and wall. The columns and walls frame the view and provide a transition from the extroverted life of summer to the introverted security of the winter fireplace.

The

diagrams of the house II describes the development of set of abstract possibilities as possible for an under lying structure. The first six diagrams present one set of conditions possible from this initial diagram. It is to be noted that planer and volumetric conditions are linear and directional in opposing axises.

Danteum Architect: Giuseppe Terragni The structure was meant to be built in Rome on the Via dell’Impero. The intention was to celebrate the famous Italian poet Dante, extol the virtues of a strong fascist state, that bases its foundations on the glory of imperial Rome. The residues of the project give us the unfulfilled dream of Terragni for a monument to Dante, in which the Divine Comedy was projected in an architectural scheme.The Danteum was conceived as an allegory of the Divine Comedy. It consists of a sequence of monumental spaces that parallel the narrator’s journey from the “dark wood” through hell, purgatory, and paradise The Architect used geometry & numbers he found in the poems to draw up plans for the monument.He chose to request that it be placed between the graffiti of the modern buildings and the ruins of the colosseum as if it bridges the gap between two societies in nature.The personiﬁcation of columns is not uncommon in Byzantine architecture. Procopius, stresses the stones with which columns are clad, especially their colour.It was never built because the ensuring wall stopped the construction plans and were never restarted. Thus keeping it incomplete. 15

The Suprematist Painting by Kazimir Malevich was done in 1915 during suprematism- one of the key movements of modern art in Russia. The painting is limited to geometric shapes and a narrow range of colours. Location: Various Locations spread across the park. Point of Departure: Traditional chattri near zoo bridge. A pavilion taking inspiration from the contextual urban furniture present in the lawns of Kamautibaug. Involving the processes of Repetititon and Scaling, the pavilion generates multiple levels both above and excavated, whilst respecting the trees in the vicinity. The platforms at various heights and of various sizes create interesting shadow patterns and allow the experience of the pavilion like folly from multiple levels. Model No.i : Tracing a neutral grid on the proposed site with respect to trees. Model No.ii : Extruding columns and excavating earth to create levels. Model No.iii : Scaling and placing various plynths which act as shading devices. Model No.iv : Creating underground Volumes and connecting plinths with staircases
