FUSION FALL 2018
FUSION ˈfyo͞oZHən The process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity. In the summer of 2018, we officially launched the Premier® Yarns Internship Program. Katrina Sanchez Stanfield and Erin Magee had the unique opportunity to intern in our design department at our corporate location in Harrisburg, NC. Throughout the summer, they had the opportunity to experience, and assist in, the development of our 2019 yarn collection. The main focus during their internships was to experience, and assist in, the development of the 2019 yarn collection, the process of creating new yarns and colorwork from concepting to photography and to provide insight on the next generation of knitters and crocheters. Throughout the summer, Katrina and Erin designed a collection of patterns using our exclusive anti-pilling acrylic yarns. Their infusion of youth and new ideas, their experiences in art and school applied to our yarns and colors really created spectacular outcomes. Katrina and Erin spent their last internship day at the photography studio stylizing outfits and worked with the hair and makeup stylist to complete the looks you see here. It is with great pleasure that Premier Yarns presents the Fusion collection by Katrina Sanchez Standfield and Erin Magee.

Meet Our Emerging Designer: Katrina Sanchez Stanfield I’m a fiber artist and fine arts student at UNC Charlotte going into my final year. I learned to crochet from my mom when I was 10 and began to explore crochet as a fine art medium when I was introduced to the UNC Charlotte Fiber Arts Program. I love the versatility of crochet and the ability create sculptures, garments, crochet paintings and more with just yarn and a crochet hook. I was drawn to the Premier® Yarns internship after participating in a group project where our UNC Charlotte fiber arts class designed and created a large sculpture featuring the Everyday® and Luna™ yarn lines. After collaborating on this piece, I knew I would love interning for Premier Yarns! During the internship I designed my pattern collection using Everyday® Soft Worsted and Everyday® Bulky which come in amazing colors. My collection is inspired by the summertime, exploring new places, and the stories that colors can tell. I’m inspired by fellow artists of all disciplines, graphic design, color theory, visits to my home country of Panama, the natural world, and the human condition. I hope you enjoy the line as much as I loved designing and crocheting it!

Meet Our Emerging Designer: Erin Magee I just concluded an amazing summer interning with Premier® Yarns! Currently, I am a sophomore at North Carolina State University and plan on majoring in material science and engineering with a minor in vocal performance. I first learned to knit about two years ago with my mother when she took me to a beginner’s class at a local yarn store, where my love of knitting quickly took off! Besides the fact that sweaters are my favorite thing to wear, I love the way knitting stretches my creativity and is a great stress reliever. What I love most about knitting is the way it constantly pushes me out of my comfort zone and boosts my confidence. It’s so rewarding to finally finish a project that had seemed too complicated before I started, wear bright and crazy colors outside of my usual wardrobe, and create something unique with my own two hands that I’m proud of. When I found out that the office for Premier Yarns was located right in my hometown I knew I had to send them my resume. It was the perfect opportunity for me; close to home, a new subject I am interested in and, most importantly, I love to knit! Premier Yarns gave me the perfect environment to do something I already knew and loved while pushing my boundaries into a subject I’d very minimally explored which was design. In my designs I was inspired by juxtaposition, I loved combining old school silhouettes with new trends and neutral colors with bright ones. Color blocking played a big role in many of my designs as well as textured stitches; another example of contrast as the clean lines were combined with interesting stitch patterns. I wanted to create interesting design pieces I would wear myself and that reflected my own personality. For many of my patterns I used Everyday® Soft Worsted that knit up beautifully and was perfect to create soft and cozy sweaters. The colors of the Everyday® yarn were also perfect inspiration for my designs as there are a great range of neutrals and interesting brights! I also used Luna™ and DK Colors™ for my some of my designs. I loved these yarns because of the beautiful colorways and smooth way they knit up. One of my favorite things to do when knitting is combining different color changing yarns to create interesting combinations. Working at Premier Yarns this summer has been an amazing opportunity and I’m so grateful to them for allowing me the opportunity. I’ve learned so much about design, knitting, and working in a professional environment and I know it will benefit me many years to come.
