It is my pleasure to introduce you to the new look of our journal, rechristened Premier Today, to signify the next chapter of growth for our Company. The exciting design not only offers layouts for better functionality, but also livens up the way we engage with our readers – you! The design splits the newsletter into two sections – one that will highlight the Company’s performance and its various initiatives, while the latter section will offer employees a platform to express themselves. With this issue’s cover story, we take you on a journey highlighting the various milestones of our revamped RiO – from its launch to how this compact SUV, India’s first and only one yet, is now winning hearts and looking to expand its dealership network. We also bring back old favourites such as our annual theatre festival, our scholarship programmes, our sponsorship activities at MindSpark, while heralding the new – Blue Shores, a prison art project with a difference, to foster our ongoing CSR initiatives. Our new employee-centric section Premier Pulse opens with a focus on our Auto team, which takes the RiO through its various stages of production before it is ready to hit the road. Premier’s President, Mr. M.D. Adhikari, also addresses our employees by offering insights on the importance of the collaboration between the management and manpower. Looking ahead, I-Suggest gains momentum by expanding its volunteer base and the RiO goes online with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube with celebrities like Ash Chandler and Rahul Khanna adding to the glamour by tweeting about their test drive experiences. We close the issue by coming full circle with the news about the online fan club dedicated to our first vehicle, Premier Padmini, and with the feedback that helped shape this newsletter’s redesign. APPEARANCE IN AUTOCAR PERFORMANCE SHOW The petrol variant of the RiO was displayed at the Autocar Performance Show at Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, from November 17 to 20. The dazzling red RiO drew massive crowds and generated tremendous curiosity as show-goers and media persons visited the stall and appreciated the slick interiors and its cute, unique look.

In December, the petrol variant was showcased for two days at various malls in Mumbai (R City – Ghatkopar, Inorbit – Malad, Korum – Thane), Pune (Inorbit) and Indore (C 21). The promotional event garnered an overwhelming response including several on-the-spot bookings and many confirmed future sales. Promos also ran on the well-known FM channel Radio City 91.1 in Mumbai. Print advertisements ran in newspapers such as Mid-Day, Bombay Times, Deccan Herald and Bangalore Times.

COVER STORY GROWING EVERY DAY Premier Ltd. plans to add 30 dealers to its existing network of 50 dealers, taking its overall network to 80 dealerships by June 2012. Two new dealerships are expected in the East zone in Mizoram and Siliguri. Four new outlets in South are set to open in Srikakulam, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Pondicherry. The North zone is set to have 10 new dealerships in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, Delhi, Dehradun, Ghaziabad and Jammu, while the West zone will have nine new outlets.

The company has also decided to ramp up its after-sale service network all over India by setting up ‘Premier Authorised Service Stations’, branded as ‘PASS’. The company plans to have 200 such service centres for the RiO nationwide by June 2012 in an effort to expand the service network for RiO customers. Its targets include growing to 100 dealerships and 300 service stations by December 2012, for easy service and repair in all major markets. Premier will also offer RiO spare parts at very reasonable prices.

premier FAN BECOMES PREMIER DEALER How closely can one be associated with his car? Mr. Madan Lamba of Mumbai has been raising the bar since birth. He entered the world in a Premier car, when his mother delivered him in the car on the way to the hospital and he was born into a family that owned 32 Premier taxis. PREMIER’S CSR INITIATIVES This section focuses on Premier’s CSR activities whose main aim is to promote education, art and culture. The company also works to address and support several social and environmental issues. Through its various initiatives, Premier attempts to touch and change many lives.

SECOND CHANCES - A prison art project with a difference CELEBRATING The Shri Lalchand Theatre Hirachand Premier Trust (a public charity managed by the Doshi family of Premier Ltd) recently pledged to financially sponsor Blue Shores — a unique prison art project conducted at the Aguada Central Jail in Goa. Trustee Padmashree Dr. Saryu Doshi (PhD), one of India’s leading art authorities and the former Honorary Director of the An artwork by a student of the Blue Shores project. National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai, has been a champion of and adviser for this project since its inception in 2009. Blue Shores is the brainchild of Margaret Mascarenhas (novelist and independent curator) (inset, right) and Swatee Nair (abstract artist and theorist) (inset, left). Unlike other prison art projects in the country, the primary objective of Blue Shores is to teach a college-level art syllabus to specially-selected inmates who face long periods of incarceration while simultaneously documenting the effect that the serious practice of pure arts has on the psyche and world view of the participants.

A two-year long research project, partly sponsored by the Shri Lalchand Hirachand Premier Trust, aims to document the trajectory of experimental theatre in Mumbai. The project encapsulates the origin of experimental theatre from private spaces such as the Bhulabhai Desai Institute and Walchand Terraces. Its outcome — a book scheduled to be launched by October 2013 — will be a tribute to Premier’s former chairman Late Mr. Vinod Doshi, who played a significant part in the development of experimental theatre in the city. Other initiatives by Premier that celebrate the art of theatre include the annual Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival.

Act Four The 4th annual Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival was held from February 27 to March 2 at the Yashwantrao Chavan auditorium in Kothrud, Pune. The event, which aims to promote and revive the dying art of theatre, plans to showcase five plays in English, Marathi and Hindi. The enthusiastic audience was from different socio-economic backgrounds. The five plays in the festival were Stories In A Song (English, Hindi) directed by Sunil Shanbag, Preth (Hindi) by Gopal Dutt and Purva Naresh, Aalbel directed by Sai Paranjape in Marathi, Bandhlelyachi Manogata (Marathi) by Praveen Bhole and Comrade Kumbhakarna, a Hindi play directed by Mohit Takalkar.

Tree of Life Premier Ltd. has planted nearly 500 different types of trees in its factory premises in Chinchwad, as part of its Go Green initiative. Some of the tree families that have been planted include fishtail palms, Gulmohar, spathodea, supari (areca nut), bottle palm, golden cypress, dracaena, silver-oak, ficus golden, Spanish palm. The trees were carefully selected keeping in mind their growth rates and benefits towards the environment. The trees also act as natural fences and safeguard the factory. They help reduce the amount of dust that enters the factory and thereby help create a healthier environment to work in. The tree plantation initiative was personally supervised by the senior management of the company — an act that set a good example for the rest of the employees to follow. The green belt in the campus showcases the company’s commitment towards the environment.

Bin there, done thAT

As part of its efforts to promote cleaner environments, Premier Ltd. partnered with Lighthouse Management Pvt. Ltd. to promote car bins. The project encourages the use of car bins to help reduce road litter. The initiative to distribute the leakproof bins free-of-cost was launched at the 11th Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. These bins, made either from plastic or cloth, are easy to install and remove according to the customer’s requirements. Moreover, it is very easy to clean and reuse. This bin can be fitted between two front seats with the help of a belt, without hampering leg space. The car bins are specially designed for any type of vehicle.

The garden uses recycled water from a newly-set up sewage treatment plant.

A garbage dump at the Premier factory in Chinchwad has been converted into a luscious green garden of approximately 750 sq. metres as part of the company’s environmental initiatives. The factory has also set up a sewage treatment plant, which recycles and treats waste water (nearly 500-600 litres per day) that is then used for the new garden.

Gift of Knowledge The Vinod Doshi-COEP merit scholarship has been awarded to 10 students, double the usual number of students who receive the annual support to pursue their engineering education at College of Engineering, Pune. The scholarship, which covers the cost of all the four years of engineering education including hostel and mess fees, saw an equal male and female proportion for the first time since it began two years ago.The five female scholars for 2011-12 were especially thrilled as they were the first females ever to receive the scholarship.

The students are set to be felicitated at a specially-organised function at the Premier factory soon.

Premier – COEP: The Link The scholarship also entails: • A paid internship every vacation for interested scholars. • An assured job at Premier Ltd. on completion of their engineering degree. • Senior scholars guiding the juniors. • Premier employees mentoring the scholars. • Factory visit and exposure to the Premier factory to be scheduled soon. • Complimentary tickets to the 4th annual Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival.

RobotIC Aid Premier Ltd. has donated a robot to the budding engineers at COEP, who will be studying its industrial applications and design. The Swedish-manufactured IRB 6400 robot is primarily used as a manipulator in EXCELLO machines, which make CNC Horizontal Machining Cell that is used to automatically load and unload cylinder blocks. Robotics has seen a current boom. With a live example of a working robot, students can study the technology in better ways. This robot will see its formal inauguration in March, once it has been programmed and customised to suit the students’ requirements.

EDUCATIONAL AID Nine candidates have received financial aid through the Vinod Doshi Shikshan Yojna this year. The scope of the erstwhile Vinod Doshi Educational scholarship was widened this year and the scheme was rechristened as the Vinod Doshi Shikshan Yojna. As the name suggests, the educational aid is given to children of Premier employees in need of economic support to pursue higher education. The aid has now been extended to include Premier employees who wish to pursue higher education themselves while continuing their jobs. This motivating gesture of the Trust attracted many applications and the final selection was based on the scrutiny of academic records followed by a personal interview. This year, the portfolio of the aid recipients ranged from a degree in Architecture to diplomas in Engineering. To our

Field Trip Premier Ltd. in association with the NGO Children in Progress (CHIP) organised a tour of the factory in Chinchwad for 25 students of Std X from the Tata Compound BMC School on December 26. The main purpose of the educational visit was to expose the students to actual manufacturing units. After a warm welcome from the HR team, the students were given a brief presentation on the history of the company. They were also informed about the various divisions, units and products in great detail. It was refreshing to find that girls, who before the visit had said they wanted to become doctors, were now looking at engineering as a career option. And boys, who had earlier thought that cars and machines were some of the only products engineers help create, were now fascinated by the wind mill components. Premier’s founder Seth Walchand Hirachand has been honoured as part of a commemorative exhibition at the Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technological Museum (VITM) in Bangalore. The event was held to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya and it showcased the life

Automotive delegates visit Premier plant Premier Ltd. organised a factory tour for around 60 national and international delegates at Noppen’s India Automotive Summit 2011 on October 13. The visitors, who comprised prominent auto industry leaders and government officials, were very impressed with the state-of-theart facilities at the Chinchwad plant.

Delegates included representatives from A K Steel International, Ashok Leyland Nissan Vehicles Ltd., Bharat Forge Ltd., Eaton Corporation, General Motors India Pvt. Ltd. The conference served as a platform for the guests to discuss the current automotive situation in India and how they could work together to create a better future.

Spark of Genius The mental agility of students was put to the test at COEP’s annual technical festival MindSpark ’11, which was held from December 27 to 29. Premier Ltd. returned to its role as the ‘Engineering Partner’ here. Participants were made to apply their skills and knowledge for three of the companysponsored events — Contraption and CNC Lathe Workshop — and at the engineering design problem-solving competition Premier Utkarsh. Contraption was based on the principle of energy conversions and used a chain of different steps that eventually led to the completion of the final task. Mr. BB Gawas, Manager, Application, Machine Tool Division, Premier Ltd. was the presenter at the CNC Lathe Workshop. The participants of Premier Utkarsh had to suggest a feasible and optimised solution to a real-time problem. It was judged by Mr. VR Kothari, AGM (Application), Machine Tool Division and Mr. SU Khasnis, AGM (Manufacturing), Machine Tool Division, Premier Ltd. The problem statement for the event was provided by Mr. SD Joshi, General Manager, Design, Machine Tool Division, Premier Ltd. The Premier RiO was on display at the event and it attracted several onlookers. Many even gave their details for a test drive.

The event, which took place at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, offered a platform for the company to build future trade opportunities in developing items such as bogie frames and engine blocks for the Indian Railways.

You can also catch the team at stall number C106 (Hall 1) at the Modern Machine Shop 2012, which is to be held at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida between April 5 and 8. The business-to-business exhibition, organised by the Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers’ Association (IMTMA), is a platform to showcase potential and futuristic technologies in the field of metal working machinery, lowcost automation, material handling and quality control.

Premier Ltd. has chosen Seco as its tooling partner, and the multinational producer of tools will now be supplying highly productive solutions such as bridge boring bars that match requirements for geometrical tolerances and are fully-compliant with customer demand. Premier Ltd., which is the first in the country to use tooling for precision machining of heavy wind turbine parts, depends on tooling to try out innovative methods to reduce cycle time and productivity.

Premier Ltd. participated at the Kolhapur Industrial Expo 2011 held between December 18 and 21. Premier displayed the updated version of its Vertical Machining Centre model PVM 40 to a positive feedback from all the users. The model, which was introduced three years ago, has been upgraded to suit market requirements. It is competitivelypriced and is truly an economical solution to the customer’s milling needs as its maintenance-free operations further reduce operational costs. Premier Ltd. has already designed a special version of PVM 40 with advanced features suitable for Die and Mould machining application. This model would be put in for production from April 2012. The company is also planning to launch a biggersized version of the vertical machining centre model.

WINNING TEAM

The Assembly Line It’s hard to find workplaces that allow for teamwork in a world where people emphasise on winning, being the best, and coming out on top. Workers are rarely raised in environments that focus on true teamwork and collaboration. However, that’s not the case at the Automotive Division of Premier Ltd., which has several teams working together under one roof to manufacture the new RiO. Here’s a look at how the members of these various teams, who come from different backgrounds and with diverse skill sets, take on different aspects of the RiO’s assembly to get the compact SUV to the market in excellent condition.

A quality inspector steps in at the end of each line to make sure that all the fittings are proper. The quality team works on the continuous improvement of the vehicle.

Stage 1

The assembly of the RiO starts with the trim line team, who install parts such as the roof rail, carpet and upholstery. Ladies are mostly employed on this line and the wiring work of the vehicle body is assigned to them. Their enthusiasm at work creates a positive working environment among employees.

After an inspector signs off on a car body on the trim line, it is lifted and jacked on to a tackle (a rope attached to a pulley) and transferred to the underbody line. This team handles all the work done under the body of the car including brake pipe routing and clamping.

The powertrain line members couple accessories and transmission with the engine. Everything is done with extreme precision and safety precautions are followed.

The engine assembly and testing team that does the initial testing and assembly.

Stage 6

The vehicle is then dropped at the completion line – where accessories such as surge tank engine, wiring harness are assembled, and the vehicle is cranked.

Stage 4

The Troubleshooters Just before RiO was to be launched, a minor unforeseen production problem was identified. The engine when turned off in AC mode was not able to start back again. The staff at the automotive division was asked to help solve this issue. All the teams got together to rectify the problem but none of their solutions worked. And then three heroes emerged with a sensible solution that finally put an end to the dilemma. The trio — Mr. Nilesh M Gaikwad (Executive, R&D), Mr. Appa L Jadhav (Electrician, Production) and Mr. Pramod D Gadve (Electrician, Development workshop) — had worked day and night to come up with the answer. Their efforts were highly appreciated by all including the senior management, and the three employees were recognised as troubleshooters from then on. October

Painting Process Application and Requirement An in-house training programme on ‘Painting Process Application and Requirement’ for the Engineering Services Division and Machine Tool Division was organised on October 11 by Mr. Sandesh Mane and Mr. Sushant Katkar, both from AkzoNobel Coatings India Pvt. Ltd. The full-day programme was organised to study the paint application process. It was held in two batches for 47 employees (both permanent and contracted).

Welding Standards A full-day training programme on ‘Welding Standards’ was organised in-house for the Engineering Services Division on October 18 by an outside faculty Mr. Chintamani Khade, Empirical Technocrat. Some of the topics covered during the training were Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), Welding Performance Qualification (WPQ) and Process Qualification Record (PQR). The programme was attended by 16 employees.

CNC and Electrical Systems related to Machine Tools A training programme on ‘CNC and Electrical Systems related to Machine Tools’ was organised on November 24 for the Machine Tool Division. A total of 16 participants attended the programme, which offered theoretical knowledge on CNC and Electrical Systems.

Ten Corporate Commandments A business etiquette workshop was organised on September 14 to help bring employees up to speed on the etiquettes prevalent in business circles. It hoped to transform employees into professional brand ambassadors of the organisation who would demonstrate these etiquettes during business functions, client interactions and conferences. Participants of the practical workshop designed 30-second personal commercials, learnt how to ‘break the ice’ with strangers and how to get their boss’s undivided attention. They reviewed the contents of the workshop programme, which was sent to them a week before the event and chose those topics that were most relevant to them. The training was conducted by Mr. Nitin Aher, Corporate Trainer, Wisdom Solutions.

It was attended by new employees and those who had missed earlier sessions.

TEAM SPIRIT Tools’ Worship The factory and corporate office (right) celebrated Khande Navami on October 5 (the day before Dassera) by organising a puja, which also involved the worship of the tools offered by the workers. Prayers were said at the work stations. The employees were very excited about the day and everyone participated — making it a very spiritual and fun day.

Historical Hike The officers from the Automotive Division set out on a promising adventure trip to Raigad. They left after work on December 3 and spent the night in Mahad. The next day, they trekked to Raigad and enjoyed the whole day out in the open. They returned fully refreshed and realised that they need such outings to rejuvenate themselves.

Resort to Fun Our Finance and Tax team in the corporate office, who felt that they needed a nice short break to re-energise themselves for work, took off on a one-day train trip to Tikuji-Ni-Wadi Resort in Thane. So on November 26, after breakfast, they set out on a fun day packed with Ferris wheels, swings, roller coasters and water sports. An adventure activity that they particularly enjoyed was the zip-line, where they had to come sliding down a rope from the top of a tank on a tall building, then pass over a swimming pool before landing on the ground.

Foreign individuals can now buy Indian Stocks Although the Indian Capital Market has been open for Foreign Institutional Investors, for many years, foreign investors (foreign nationals) were not allowed to buy equity shares of Indian companies on Stock Exchanges in India directly in their names. Now, the Government of India has permitted foreign nationals to invest directly in their own names in the equity shares of Indian companies. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have formulated this rule in January 2012.

How does this impact us? • It will increase the inflow of foreign exchange into the country. • The equity of Indian companies will get a boost. • It will deepen the Indian Capital Market.

Foreign Direct Investment in Single Brand Products The Government of India has now allowed foreign companies to set up their 100% owned retail shops for retailing single brand products.

How does this impact us?

• Will benefit farmers and SMEs in the form of higher price for their products. • It will increase the flow of foreign exchange into the country and will help in generating more employment, thereby boosting the economy as a whole.

Indirect Taxation The State of Haryana has clarified that the statutory forms under the Central Sales Tax provisions would now be issued only after a transaction has taken place i.e. post transaction only. The State of Punjab has clarified that every contractee (executing agency), who is responsible for making a payment to any person (contractor) shall deduct an amount equal to 5% of such sum payable on account of such work contract executed. This sum shall be deducted as TDS @ 5% by contractee at the time of making payment to the contractor, either in cash or in any other manner for contracts exceeding Rs. 5 lakh for single work/ job assigned. This shall be applicable with immediate effect. The State of Andhra Pradesh has increased the composition rate from 4% to 5% for various works contracts, hotels, producers of feature films etc.

The Engineering Division at Premier Ltd. purchased nine Lorch MIG welding machines in November. The German company proposed that an employee from Premier visit Stuttgart for a four-day training on Advanced Welding Technology in January. “I was more than happy when it was decided that it was going to be me,” says Mr. Mirza Baig. On the first day of the training programme, he was introduced to Mr. Wolfgang Grueb, MD, Lorch, Mr. Cataldo Sposato, International Sales Director, and his team. This was followed by a factory visit that showed him the company’s new developments. During the following days, Mr. Thomas Augustin, International Sales Manager and Application Engineer (European Welding Society), showed him how to use all the features of the MIG welding machine. He also taught him the correct technique of using welding parameters, how to select the right processes according to the requirements, and about safety measures during operation. “It was a wonderful experience and I wish to thank our company for selecting me and having faith in me,” says Mr. Baig. UPDATE: Mr. Baig now plans to apply the newly-learnt techniques on nine Lorch arc welding machines purchased especially for a BEML project. He would be training 18 welders, which will help enhance the work needed for the bogie chassis frame fabrication.

We are now using the same as a standardised product for all our PHA 250 and PHA 250 EGB machines, and their looks have improved.)

“ESD/02 works on the welding of Enercon windmill steel part Disc Rotor (DR). The critical slot size of Arrester Plates (A/plate) gets affected after welding and to control this some support welding is done at present. During the process, a bolt is fixed to ensure that the welding spatter does not enter the M16X2 hole. However, this routine of welding in the support first followed by grinding is time-consuming. If the supports for each A/plate is prepared and the welding is done after holding it on the M16X2 hole, then support welding/grinding will not be required.

Following benefits are derived if this method is used: • This saves the power required for welding and cost of welding wire. • It also eliminates the electricity usage and manpower required for grinding. • No welding and grinding on supports means that the quality will be better. • It saves time and non-value work can be avoided.” - Mr. Anand S Kittad, Engineering Division. Foreign individuals can now buy Indian Stocks Although the Indian Capital Market has been open for Foreign Institutional Investors, for many years, foreign investors (foreign nationals) were not allowed to buy equity shares of Indian companies on Stock Exchanges in India directly in their names. Now, the Government of India has permitted foreign nationals to invest directly in their own names in the equity shares of Indian companies. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have formulated this rule in January 2012.

How does this impact us? • It will increase the inflow of foreign exchange into the country. • The equity of Indian companies will get a boost. • It will deepen the Indian Capital Market.

Foreign Direct Investment in Single Brand Products The Government of India has now allowed foreign companies to set up their 100% owned retail shops for retailing single brand products.

How does this impact us?

• Will benefit farmers and SMEs in the form of higher price for their products. • It will increase the flow of foreign exchange into the country and will help in generating more employment, thereby boosting the economy as a whole.

Indirect Taxation The State of Haryana has clarified that the statutory forms under the Central Sales Tax provisions would now be issued only after a transaction has taken place i.e. post transaction only. The State of Punjab has clarified that every contractee (executing agency), who is responsible for making a payment to any person (contractor) shall deduct an amount equal to 5% of such sum payable on account of such work contract executed. This sum shall be deducted as TDS @ 5% by contractee at the time of making payment to the contractor, either in cash or in any other manner for contracts exceeding Rs. 5 lakh for single work/ job assigned. This shall be applicable with immediate effect. The State of Andhra Pradesh has increased the composition rate from 4% to 5% for various works contracts, hotels, producers of feature films etc.
