Twinkle lights hang over the dining area. The one-of-a-kind cake sits on the center table. The Couple enters the reception hall, and that’s the moment when they see the completed cake for the first time. Their vision is complete. The Couple previously worked with a cake artist to design a cake that represents who they are and what they hope for their future. This custom cake celebrates not only the wedding day, but it also provides something the whole wedding party can enjoy. The cake is both a way to celebrate their unique personalities and give back to their guests.

When I got married, I didn’t take the time to design my own wedding cake. I was grateful for what we had, but I didn’t feel connected to it. I have pictures of the cake and guests admiring it, but it didn’t add anything meaningful or unique to my wedding. I regret not taking the time to create a lasting memory and something delicious I could share with my guests.

Designing your own wedding cake adds uniqueness and positivity that ties the whole wedding together.

Why would I want to design a cake?

There are so many choices to make for a wedding it can seem like designing a cake is just an extra step. However, it can be surprisingly therapeutic to pause and think, “What is the feeling and vibe I’m looking to share at our wedding?”

A cake is the perfect way to make a singular statement of who you are and how you want to celebrate your union. Because you can design it, the cake can reflect your unique characteristics.. Don’t be afraid to do something new, out of the box, or over the top! If you don’t feel like a natural-born designer, find a cake artist you connect with and share your vision with them. It’s their job to create inspiration and edible art from your ideas.

As you sit down with a cake designer, the only priority is your vision. You, as a couple, are the authors and creators of the design. The Couple gets to work together to decide flavors, height, and design.

What is the vibe of my wedding?

I love the drama. When I walk into the room, I want the guests to be blown away with the height and over-the-top decor. But, that may not be what you want as a couple! Here are a few examples of themes to start thinking about your vision:

You may want to have an elegant, edgy, or rustic cake. Each can convey different meanings. Perhaps a rustic cake can show the sweetness of your relationship and that you are happy with each other just the way you are. An elegant one may show your classy personalities and that you’re ready for all the timeless adventures together. It may be fun to have an edgy cake to show that you are oneof-a-kind and celebrate your uniqueness. But you don’t have to stick to those descriptions; simply decide what your vibe is.

What represents me?

When you’re representing meaning through a cake, keep in mind it doesn’t need to be literal. You can convey meaning through color, decor, and texture. This is where the cake artist can really come in handy to give you options. Here are some ideas that you can use to start thinking about different meanings conveyed through cake. You can design the cake based on an idea. For example, you may want one striking design on the cake. You could use a textured tier to show you starting to come together as a couple and one smooth golden tier to show you growing into your golden years. Perhaps you want flowers to cascade down the side to show your flowing love. You may want flowers to wrap up the cake to lift the eyes to represent your uplifting joy. It doesn’t need to be complex, but deliberate placement can change the whole feeling of the cake.

Unless you have a themed wedding, it’s nice to place hidden symbols into your cake. You can place flowers that represent the Couple. I love the idea that one bride used some heather flower to represent her Scottish heritage. Think about what special meanings or symbolism you want to display on the cake.

It’s wonderful to celebrate what makes you unique. It can help to tie you, your love, and your wedding theme together. The cake is one part of the wedding experience the guest gets to participate in as well, b as a show piece and a tastebud experience. It’s a joy to design a cake to celebrate you- and you get to eat it too!
