BROOME
EXPERIENCE NATURE’S HISTORY at Gantheaume Point, where dinosaur footprints are pressed timelessly into the reef from when they walked the earth 130 million years ago. The footprints can be viewed at tides below 2.16m and sturdy shoes are recommended, however, a plaster cast of the prints are located at the top of the cliff for a closer and more convenient look. As an added bonus the red, rocky earth contrasts against the cool, turquoise waters for a beautiful view.
STAIRCASE TO THE MOON THE GOLDEN GLIMMER of the Staircase to the Moon is a mesmerising sight to behold. This spectacular phenomenon occurs for three nights each month between March and October when the full moon rises over Roebuck Bay’s exposed mudflats. The clear skies and low tides allow the sun’s reflection to produce a surreal optical illusion that is not to be missed. For the best view, observe from the outdoor bar at Mangrove Hotel or from Town Beach.
STREETER'S JETTY AT HIGH TIDE THE ORIGINAL JETTY for the pearling luggers based in Broome. The original rough bush timber jetty was built in the 1880s and extended all the way to Dampier Creek. It has been repaired and replaced several times. The narrow jetty carves through the mangroves and allowed luggers to offload pearl shell and load supplies. At low tide it appears to lead to nowhere yet on a 9m tide it is submerged below the water’s surface. Visit this piece of history at high tide to really appreciate its beauty. Check the tide times on page 52. 8

Paspaley Pearls will give behind-the-scenes access to their world-class harvesting operation for the first time this year. By LEAH MCLENNAN.
A
thrilling new tour will give lucky guests rare behind the scenes access to one of the most luxurious jewellery brands in the world. By May, Broome Pearl Farm Tours will offer a tour that will see participants cruising aboard a luxurious 72-foot catamaran, the Karma IV, to the Paspaley Pearl Farm located just three kilometres offshore in Roebuck Bay. Along the way guests will have the opportunity to spot marine life in the crystal clear turquoise waters. Turtles, snubfin dolphins, sea snakes, dugongs, crocodiles and even humpback whales can be spotted in the bay. Mark Posch, the great grandson of Master Pearler Herbert Kennedy and Manager of Paspaley’s Broome farms, has been pearling

Broome Issue 19 | April ~ July 2018
professionally since he turned 19. The tour has been designed to showcase the farm, which Mark has had a significant hand in developing, building and working over the last 30 years. “The plan is to open up the farm to tourists and make it a place where visitors can learn about Australia’s oldest and largest pearling company,” says Mark. Paspaley Pearls is the only pearling company today that is fully operational meaning the entire process from fishing for shell (drift diving), seeding operations, farm husbandry, harvesting, wholesale and retail sales of their own 100% Australian South Sea Pearls, jewellery design through to the final display in the Boutique - are all completed in-house by Paspaley Pearls. “There wouldn’t be many people even in Broome that have seen the Paspaley farm. “You can’t really discover it unless you are a Pearler – until now that is.” The tour will have a focus on demonstrating to guests the real operations of a working pearl farm up close, including the husbandry methods on the cleaning boats. Guests on the tour will gain first hand insight from experts into the entire process of cultured pearl farming and learn why Paspaley Australian South Sea pearls are so highly prized. As leaders in the industry, Paspaley still hold the record set for the highest price ever
paid for a single strand of cultivated pearls, being US$2.3 million in 1992. Besides offering visitors the opportunity to harvest their own pearl (and to purchase if desired) the tour will also give travellers insight into the hardship and adventure of pearling, which remained almost unchanged from the 1880s through to the 1970s. The tour will include a Luggers Lunch, served with a range of refreshments, and an entrée of pearl meat - a highly regarded delicacy taken from the Pinctada Maxima oyster. From September, Paspaley will offer a second exclusive tour - the VIP Harvest Tour. Limited to very few people at a time, this tour includes a fast ferry to the mothership; the MV Paspaley IV. Onboard the five-storey 168 ft ship - the most advanced pearling vessel in the world - guests will witness the pearl harvest in process. This all-inclusive tour features a lavish lunch served in a handmade bento box, which guests can take home with them as a gift. Generous portions of pearl meat will also be served during the day. After disembarking, guests will discover the inspiration behind Paspaley’s Signature Collections post tour at the Broome Paspaley Boutique, with complimentary refreshments provided. Welcome to country
Kimberley Company partners with the Bunuba People to introduce people to this incredible part of the world.
I
f you’ve always wanted to explore the real Kimberley, a new eco-tourism company offers visitors the chance to discover the landscape, stories and people of this wild part of Australia. Kimberley Country PL (KCPL) is collaborating with the Bunuba People (the traditional owners of a vast stretch of land to the west and north of Fitzroy Crossing in the north west of Australia) and now offers walk/drive tours of up to a week. With guides from the Bunuba Rangers, visitors will be taken through some of the most remote country in the world – and most of these places are uniquely accessible to the Kimberley Country team. The concept for KCPL was developed five years ago by Bill Layton. As a regular visitor to Fitzroy Crossing (mainly to visit
friends and help on various voluntary and community projects) Bill, often accompanied by some of the Bunuba Rangers, began to explore the local area by foot and 4WD vehicle. It soon became very clear that the area offered remarkable touring opportunities through tracks and to sites that very few people visited. At the same time it was very clear that the local Aboriginal community is currently experiencing high unemployment with associated social problems. An opportunity presented itself therefore to provide local Aboriginal people with employment using eco-tourism opportunities in the area. “Although the business is currently owned by me, the intent is that Indigenous partners will be gradually introduced, and eventually the business will be 100% owned
and operated by them,” says Bill. The initial trek, called the Twin Gorges Walk, has been going for over two years now and nearly 100 people have been on the seven-day tour. “The feedback from this adventurous walk has been fantastic with customers raving about the country, the Indigenous guides, and the history and culture of the Kimberley that unfolds as the tour progresses,” says Bill. “Guests camp under canvas during the week-long tour, and meals are prepared on an open fire under the southern skies,” he says. “We can also offer guided tours/walks to include activities from one to seven days, created just for our guests,” says Bill. There’s plenty to look forward to in Broome for those who love horses, whether it’s on the race track, the polo field or the dusty rodeo arena.
The Broome Cup The Broome Cup Carnival is a real sporting highlight – make sure you don't miss the race that stops the region. Images: SIMON MERRITT / WESTERN RACEPIX The Melbourne Cup may well be the race that stops a nation, but the Broome Cup is definitely the race that fires up a town. From humble beginnings when just a handful of gallopers battled it out, the Cup – or more specifically, the Broome Cup Carnival – is now the number one social event on the town’s calendar, attracting 14
Broome Issue 19 | April ~ July 2018
thousands from around WA, interstate and internationally, including a posse of A-list celebrities. The carnival generates a massive economic flow-on effect for Broome and the Kimberley, as many punters extend their stay to enjoy the myriad tourist attractions the region has to offer – or maybe just to soak up that beautiful winter sunshine. “Back in the 1980s there were only six race meetings, with the Cup being held in the middle of the July school holidays,” says former shire president Ron Johnston. “Being very active in tourism via Ansett and tourism organisations, I suggested that they take the Cup out of school holidays and create another event.” The idea prompted vigorous debate but there’s no doubting now it was a masterstroke; the Cup is now held in
mid-August (this year on Saturday, August 18) and upwards of 7,000 race fans are expected to flood into Broome for the carnival, the pinnacle of the Broome Turf Club’s 12-week racing season. One of the stars of last year’s carnival, Roger The Roman from the stable of local training identity Rob Gulberti who was unbeaten in five race starts over the season, will hopefully make the trip north again this season to defend his win in the $50,000 Tabtouch Sprint. Other trainers to watch out for this season include Darryn Pateman who always brings a large team of horses each year from his Karnup base just outside of Perth. Garry Dellane from Albany will have a strong stable along with Fiona Scott and husband Kevin who have also supported the club for many years with visitbroome.com.au
their team of horses all the way from Esperance. Now that the Broome Cup is the highest prize Cup race outside the Perth Metropolitan area at $150,000, it’s no wonder the Broome Turf Club attracts such high-quality horses, trainers and jockeys for their season. However, for many it’s the RWWA Country Cups Fashions on the Field, Broome vibe and party atmosphere which draws the crowds, many of whom splash out and arrive via helicopters or limousines. Spotted mingling in the Allure Pearls Marquee on Broome Cup in past years have included Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and mining magnate Andrew Forrest to name but a couple
of the highfliers who have attended the Broome races. To accommodate the high-flyers the Broome Turf Club operates a VIP Mumm Champagne tent on Cup Day. Tickets are $350 with everything included, access to the members’ area, exquisite local cuisine, the biggest TV screen in the Kimberley’s and the all-important free flowing Mumm’s champagne. as well as tote machines. Bookings are essential and tickets sell out fast. Once in Broome visitors have numerous options to fill their time between race meetings, like taking in the magical sunsets down at Cable Beach – there’s no better way than on the back of a camel, another must-do when in Broome. Explore the history of Chinatown and the pearling industry. Be amazed at the array of iconic pearl shops that Broome is famous for, you’re sure to leave town with a beautiful Broome pearl. Try deep sea fishing, take a ride out of town to witness pearl farming first hand, attend the Broome Cup Calcutta on Broome Cup Eve at the Mangrove Resort or simply relax and enjoy Broome time. The 2018 Broome Cup will be held at the Broome Turf Club on Saturday, August 18. On August 14 the spectacular course at Gantheaume Point will hold the equally spectacular Ladies Day. Broome Issue 19 | April ~ July 2018
Airnorth Cable Beach Polo Producer Marilynne Paspaley AM, said the town’s iconic beach still remained the best location for beach polo in the southern hemisphere. “The huge tides that wash Cable Beach twice a day create a beach polo playing field better than any prepared by man or machine,” Marilynne said. “The sand is compacted naturally by the tide, forming a firm but giving surface ideal for a vigorous polo game with fast-moving ponies and ball.” Arguably the best sand conditions in the world for beach polo, Marilynne said Cable Beach Polo was a favourite with professional players from around the world who have competed in the event. “Whether from Columbia or India, New
Zealand or Australia, they have all wanted to return to play again.” The 2018 festival promises to be even bigger and better with a jam-packed itinerary scheduled. Celebrations kick off on the Friday with the official launch of Airnorth Cable Beach Polo, featuring a private cocktail party for sponsors and their guests at boutique Broome lodge Pinctada McAlpine House. An open-air launch party will also be held at the Mangrove Hotel – this year’s official hotel partner for the event. On Saturday, spectators will soak up the first day of the live polo competition at the Cable Beach Polo arena. Once again, the premium VIP marquee will provide the ultimate lavish experience for guests, boasting a luxe lounge tropical setting, unrivalled beach views, live music, gourmet cuisine from local chef Nick Wendland from The Aarli and a selection of premium beverages including the awardwinning Bunnamagoo Estate wines. It is a multi-faceted, Indigenous-led organisation that builds on the symbolic power of the cowboy in remote Australia. A position of strength, the freedom of the cowboy becomes an emblem for the freedom of Indigenous people and our communities to find their own way. Indigenous people continue to maintain a living and working connection to the pastoral and rodeo ways of life while 18

nurturing their connection to country and culture. With this in mind, Saltwater Country was created, delivering a strengthbased approach where Rhythm and Ride, rodeo, campdraft and country music are used as a platform to showcase art, culture, food, sporting prowess and musical talent. Founded by local Indigenous leaders in recognition of the importance of celebrating the past, present and future of Indigenous leadership and resilience, Saltwater Country is committed to a collaborative and innovative approach that will enable Broome people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to development opportunities and expand the ways they contribute to the community.
“Saltwater Country Inc’s mission is to use the sport of rodeo and campdraft to bring people together with a common social purpose and benefit,” says Cara Peek, chairperson of Saltwater Country. “We offer the community an opportunity to enhance community spirit and family engagement through taking part in events and programs as competitors, spectators, employees, volunteers and students. The annual Rhythm & Ride Rodeo and Campdraft provides valuable income, that's used to develop sustainable and innovative events for Broome and the wider Kimberley. Rodeo riders are a tough bunch of sporting professionals, with a passion that sees countless early mornings, long days and endless roads, all in pursuit of the perfect ride. The Rhythm & Ride Campdraft is where the bling meets the dust, where you will see some of the best campdrafting stock in the country. It's where the unspoken understanding between horse and rider will visitbroome.com.au
be showcased for enthusiasts and seasoned spectators alike. It's an opportunity for the campdrafting fraternity to share their skills while their fans can look on in awe – all while raising funds for Saltwater Country's vital work in the community. "In the long term we hope to develop a rodeo and riding school," says Cara. "The school will provide a training facility for competitors from near and far, as well as running programs targeted at tackling key social issues plaguing the community." It's a truly inclusive event and, Cara says, will showcase Broome and its surrounding countryside in a unique way. "From the rodeo events to the family atmosphere and live music performances there is something for everyone from the domestic and international rodeo fraternities as well as the wider community," she says. "Rhythm & Ride is for anyone and everyone. Even if you have never seen a horse or heard country music before, you are guaranteed to be entertained and leave smiling. "The event aims to have a real economic impact on the community with a boost in tourism income and through adopting a think global, act local approach, engaging local businesses and community members where possible while attracting visitors from near and far." Events include a bull ride, ladies' barrel
race, steer ride, team roping and rodeo activities. With the Broome Horse Riding Club as the venue, set among large shading trees, Cara is excited about this year's event. "The club has a commitment to the Broome community, hoping to create additional events throughout the year. On the relaxed grassed area there's plenty of space to enjoy the fun from a comfortable seat or picnic rug. Rhythm & Ride Rodeo, September 21 to 22. Let’s go snubbie spotting Climb aboard a Broome Whale Watching tour and spot yourself a ‘snubbie’ - the rare snubfin dolphins who call Roebuck Bay their home.
D
eclared a Ramsar site in 1990 and listed on the National Heritage register in 2011, Roebuck Bay is of international importance, being declared Australia’s newest marine park in 2015. The vast, intertidal mudflat is uniquely and biologically diverse, with dugongs, green turtles and Australian snubfin dolphins feeding on the extensive seagrass meadows, which are also home to marine fishes, crustaceans and between 300 and 500 invertebrates. At low tide, 175sqkm of mud is exposed – being rich in food, the mudflat attracts around 200,000 migratory shore birds. “With its incredibly diverse ecosystem, Roebuck Bay is a sanctuary for numerous species of marine life, from turtles and dugongs,” says Cameron Birch of Broome Whale Watching, who celebrates ten years of running the business this year. “We were the first tour operator to run whale watching tours in the area - and the only one to do so for the first three years of operating.” For the Yawuru People, Roebuck Bay is integral to their history, culture and way of life. “Yawuru people have an acute awareness of the bay’s incredible richness, which has
20
Broome Issue 19 | April ~ July 2018
provided sustenance to their people for thousands of years,” Cameron adds. Home to more than 140 snubfin dolphins, Roebuck Bay provides an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s largest known and only permanent population of these rare dolphins. “Once thought to be an Irrawaddy dolphin, these unusual-looking mammals were recently named as a new species, and are one of only two species of dolphin endemic to Australia’s northern coastline,” Cameron explains. “Unlike other dolphins, these snubfin dolphins form very tight-knit social groups. Playful, social and shy are among the many words to describe these endearing creatures. And because Roebuck Bay is a tidal bay over mud flats, it makes the water murky and muddy. That’s the perfect
environment for snubbies – they are an estuarine dolphin and like shallow coastal areas, they are not an oceanic dolphin at all,” Cameron says. “These rare dolphins feed in the shallow waters where tidal creeks supply rich food sources,” he adds. “When feeding in Roebuck Bay they exhibit a distinctive, feeding behaviour, spitting jets of water ahead of their catch to disorientate their prey. “These dolphins and this fishing technique are so unique that David Attenborough recently sent a crew to Broome to capture them on film.” Roebuck Bay is also the international airport for the migratory shore birds in Australia, gathering in great numbers between March and April in Roebuck Bay before heading to the Arctic to breed. In 2007, Dave Preedy and Adrian Crook joined forces to offer specialist helicopter services in Broome, Derby and remote parts of the Kimberley. Thanks to their combined years of remote experience, and backed by a team of pilots with more than 30,000 combined hours of commercial flight experience, Dave and Adrian have continued to take KAS Helicopters to new heights. And thanks to the biggest wet season on record, they’ve seen demand for their scenic flight tours

rise exponentially. “Our driving ambition is to showcase the Kimberley by air while providing our customers with an extremely professional helicopter service, backed by skilled pilots, highly maintained and presented aircraft and the utmost regard for safety,” says Adrian. This year, a new flooded plains scenic flight from Broome offered clients a once in a lifetime chance to see the incredible inland oceans on Roebuck Plains created by massive rainfall from passing cyclones and tropical lows. From Derby, the waterfalls package includes the chance to land at a remote
waterfall, accessible only by helicopter. “Our guests are able to explore the area by foot and enjoy a refreshing swim while they relax and soak up the incredible surroundings,” says Adrian. It’s the perfect way to see sights only a few people are fortunate enough to witness in their lifetime, all from the comfort of one of the company’s fleet of modern, well maintained helicopters. The wet season in the Kimberley has made headlines all around the world thanks to the extraordinary quantities of water flowing over the ancient rocks and plains that make up the Kimberley’s natural

landform. Gushing torrents of white-tipped water have filled gorges and creeks so much that the power of nature is a sight to behold. The view from above of the landscape, so verdant and lush, with inland oceans creating extraordinary wetlands, really is an astonishing experience to witness. Even in average wet seasons the waterfalls are unforgettable but this year the opportunities to capture a once-in-alifetime photo album of massive expanses of inland water have gone up a notch. Many people have grabbed the opportunity while in the region to jump on board a KAS Helicopter trip to see the water in full flood for themselves. “We’ve had couples and families wanting to experience amazing parts of the Kimberley in this unique and exciting way, with the highest levels of customer service during their trip,” says Adrian. “Not only do guests enjoy an amazing aerial perspective of the region, we can get to areas that are either inaccessible any other way or that are time prohibitive to visit.” If you would like to book a tour with KAS Helicopters, visit kashelicopters.com.au or visitbroome.com.au

Emma Blyth
Emma Blyth
Emma Blyth’s paintings express a passion for colour and a unique sense of translating Australian culture to canvas. She utilises her large brushstrokes and vibrant colours to portray scenes from the rugged Kimberley outback to the beautiful beaches and forests of the south west. Sailboats, sunbaking beach babes and Australian wildlife romp across the vivid canvas with a sense of fun and liveliness. Emma’s love of Australia is obvious and she has travelled much of it camping out the back of a ute with a sketchbook in her hand. “The outback inspires me with its unique colours, remoteness and wildlife,” says Emma. “From the waterfalls and brolgas of the Kimberley to the rock art and billabongs of Kakadu, with cockies flying over spectacular gorges in Litchfield, turquoise bays of the Daintree, Cape York and WA’s south west.” Emma’s fun, simplistic style of art stems from her love of life on the road. “Camping on a river under a boab tree surrounded by brolgas, bush turkeys and cockatoos. and cooks it on the coals for dinner. I love capturing the simplicity of life in this unique part of our country on canvas.” Emma has been commissioned for many pieces, both in private collections and commercial applications, such as artworks throughout the rooms at Seashells resorts, promotional posters and merchandise for the annual Mandurah Channel 7 Crab Fest and Street Art for Telstra. She has been artist in Residence at Seashells Resort Mandurah, Cable Beach Resort Broome and Aspects of Kings Park. Emma’s Australian-made art gifts are available at the Broome Visitor Centre. James Down
If anybody captures the intensity of Broome’s colour palette, it’s James Down, artist and owner of Broome Gallery. Well known for his whimsical paintings reflecting his love of Broome’s history and the Kimberley’s vibrant colours, James’s work is widely coveted. “I love listening to the stories from some of the older Broome residents,” says
James. “It gives me the inspiration to create a huge range of paintings, adding historic buildings and the spectacular landscape of Broome and the Kimberley.” James, and his business partner bought the historic TB Ellies building in Carnarvon Street, one of the most recognisable buildings in the town centre. They've completed renovated this iconic building, which also houses Ellies Ice cream shop and Azure Beach & Resort Wear, as well as a new fantastic function area. Thomas Bastion Ellies was a jeweller and pearler, and one o fhe most famous characters of the time. In 1902, TB opened his own jewellery shop and purchased his own pearling lugger, The Ceylon, fondly named after his native country. More than just a pearl merchant, TB was an expert in the rare craft of pearl skinning, an extremely difficult skill to master but TB had an extraordinary gift. He could take a seemingly worthless pearl and carefully remove the imperfect outer skin, layer by layer, to reveal the precious gem inside. As a result, he was known as the Pearl Doctor.. You’ll find James’s paintings populated with familiar icons of the Kimberley and Broome; pearl luggers drifting off towards the horizon, a sturdy boab tree standing sentry on the red land, camels striding Broome Issue 19 | April ~ July 2018

He always includes his own dog, Oscar in every painting; a kind of Where’s Wally search for fans of James’s work. “We found Oscar on Cable Beach about 12 years ago, he’d been left for dead. Now he’s a bit of a celebrity here in Broome,” says James. Talking of celebrities, Amy and Josh from My Kitchen Rules visited the gallery and said how much they loved James’s paintings. “They asked if they could use them
for a show they were going on and it was wonderful to have such great exposure for my paintings,” says James. Fans of the show will have seen his large work – Broome – in the background during the popular series. “I’ve received commissions from the east coast as a result. We hope it will encourage people to visit Broome too.” Commissions are an important part of James’s work – and he loves to fulfil a client’s brief. “I can personalise paintings by adding people, vehicles and pets into your very own
Broome Time Art Gallery displays a wide variety of Kimberley art, traditional and contemporary Indigenous paintings and artefacts, wood and boab nut carvings as well as hand-crafted didgeridoos, books and gifts. The art gallery team work with many artists from the Kimberley region and beyond, introducing visitors to the incredible talent that many artists working in this area display. “Throughout the year we also have artists in residence, working on exhibitions whilst staying at Broome Time,” says Dean Cooper, general manager of the art gallery. “This can be a terrific opportunity to purchase unique and beautiful artworks, but to also listen to the stories associated with the works, directly from the artist.” There’s a useful online art gallery shop where you can buy works of art after browsing the selection of works at your leisure – the perfect way to celebrate the artistry of this unique region.

200km south of the Kimberley town. As a young nurse she was unable to secure work in Broome, so she headed to Fitzroy Crossing where she was welcomed with open arms into the small, community hospital. Her journey with the life and people of the Fitzroy Valley was a happy one, she started her family there and went on to live at GoGo Station and later the famous Fossil Downs. After 10 years in the Fitzroy Valley, Suzy and her young family shifted to Derby. It was during this time that she started painting in earnest, a room full of finished works and an enthusiastic friend was the encouragement she needed to have an exhibition. This was the beginning of a wonderful journey with oil painting. A change in her life and a shift back to Broome seven years ago saw Suzy reassess all that she was doing. She turned her attention more seriously to her artwork and started teaching both adults and children alongside painting and exhibiting the landscape she loves. In 2014 she met her partner Brian whose own creativity and support has bolstered her craft and pushed her artistic practice. With an increase in productivity has come a shift in her work on aluminium panels are new and exciting. She creates representational landscapes that come to life under lights, the luminosity of the aluminium is ignited allowing the substraight to glow through the artwork. These are innovative works that seek to generate an emotional response to the magnificence of country. Suzy is currently working on a collection of aluminium paintings that will be on exhibition in Melbourne in October.
From Brolga’s flood plains to the magnificence of the King George Falls, Suzy seeks to strike a chord with the viewer that will re-ignite the sense of isolation and grandeur allowing them to either re-live their time in this country or inspire their desire to travel here and experience it for themselves. Suzy's artwork can be seen at the Lockup Cafe in Broome, The Red Umbrella Gallery, South Fremantle, The Artisan store, Fremantle, and Artopia Gallery in Kununurra. “Life is so fragile. You only get one shot at it, so do you what you love. "That’s what I tell my boys. That’s why I chose this. This is life.” Visit suzyfrenchart.com.au or call 0418 936 915.
Sobrane
Sobrane is a street artist who is making waves around the world. Her work adorns the walls of myriad far flung locations from Port Hedland to Soriano (Italy). She draws inspiration from her dusty north west Australian tropical paradise home of Broome. The birdlife of her surrounding country is vibrant and spectacular, characteristics that she translates immediately onto canvas, tin and most recently, giant silos around Australia. Sobrane is the first Australian woman to take on a silo project. “I love doing the large walls and playing in a cherry picker,” she said as she began a new silo project painting a flight of yellowtail black cockatoos on a 24m wall at Cradle Mountain Hotel in Tasmania. “The mornings in Victoria up high against the silo walls in a cherry picker
were like hot air ballooning with clear views out across the farms.” Not willing to be constrained, Sobrane explores a plethora of styles and mediums to bring life and energy to her subjects. She has recently painted some Tasmanian devils (using coffee, acrylic and spray paint) as part of an exhibition alongside the silos, and will frequently use upwards of five mediums on her paintings in efforts to truly grasp the unique nature and playfulness of her subjects. “Exploring in new mediums is always fulfilling. Coffee gives the artwork an edge required for some animals, like the devils,” she said. Wishing to invigorate and highlight the creativity of Broome, Sobrane has made a concerted effort to bring life and colour to many otherwise dominating and uninspiring walls around town. She has painted enough walls to make a “Sobrane Safari”, a day’s outing full of awe and great coffee. Inspired by the glorious cacophonous mess that is a flock of red tailed black cockatoos, Sobrane has worked on her greatest art piece yet. She plans on adorning at least 20 cars, truck and vans with massive redtails, potentially creating the largest art installation in the world as the flock is released and disseminates around Australia. Late 2017, Sobrane moved her gallery to Captain Gregory’s House in the grounds of Matso’s brewery in Broome. The larger space has allowed her to exhibit more works, display more stock and hold events and exhibitions in the future. Proposals for the 2018 residency program are now being accepted - email gallerysobrane@gmail.com for info. Broome Issue 19 | April ~ July 2018

G
reg Quicke's destiny was written in the stars. And not in any wishy-washy astrological sense either; it was the intergalactic stuff that has helped shaped Greg's life. After arriving in Broome from southern WA, Greg became a pearl diver, a tough job made even trickier by the Kimberley's massive tidal fluctuations. And since the cycles of the Moon govern the tides, Greg could only dive on the smaller tides. Gradually he not only came to learn the precise tidal movements based on the Moon, but developed a connection between himself and the cosmos. And it was a connection that only deepened when Greg took on work as a mechanic, working at inland cattle stations around the Top End and the Kimberley. He spent many a night under a swag under a staggering canopy of glittering stars; a cosmic light show that lit the spark for Greg to get his teeth into astronomy, a passion

Space - the final frontier. But thanks to the Kimberley’s spectacular, pollution-free, clear skies and Broome astronomer Greg Quicke you can embark on your own journey through the heavens – without ever leaving the ground. By NORMAN BURNS. Images COURTESY ASTRO TOURS that burns bright to this day. Since 1995, Greg has been spreading that passion with Broome locals and tourists, the wide open spaces and dazzling night vista (Broome has more than 300 clear nights a year) providing the perfect stage for his Astro Tours. And what a stage it is.
“Broome is located perfectly on our planet to see the best of both the Southern Hemisphere and the Northern Hemisphere sky,” says Greg. “We have the two best globular clusters in the sky, with millions of stars packed into each, we have two galaxies clearly visible to the naked eye and we have the best and brightest parts of the Milky Way galaxy displayed beautifully overhead all through our best stargazing season (April through November).” It’s the wonder of the experience that has many on the tours coming back time and time again, with Greg’s line-up of specialist telescopes (“some of these are seriously big telescopes requiring a ladder to get to the eyepiece; others look like they are suitable for launching small children to the Moon,” says Greg) and 50mm fully mounted binoculars providing awe-inspiring “windows” to the heavens. “We have a lot of regulars on the Astro Tours,” says Greg. “People keep coming visitbroome.com.au
back during the ever-changing year, as well as year after year. With an ever-changing sky, tuning in is a lifetime task. It is a real joy to watch people develop their own understandings and to see the stars shining out through them.” Greg’s fame has spread well beyond Broome and the Kimberley; in 2017 he was invited to participate in the BBC and ABC shows of Stargazing Live with none other than rock star scientist Brian Cox. It was a smash, with social media going wild over Greg (and his flowing, silver beard) which earned him the nickname #spacegandalf. Look out for them both in the 2018 showing of Stagazing Live on ABC TV. “The opportunity to hang out with Professor Brian Cox on Stargazing Live and to share my passion with a much larger audience is certainly gold in my life,” says Greg. “The response of people on my live shows is awesome and the feedback from the BBC audience in Britain and the ABC audience across Australia with twitter, Instagram and Facebook is equally palpable.” For Greg, giving people the chance to observe the cosmos in pollution-free, awe-inspiring surrounds is but one step in encouraging them to forge the same connection with the universe he himself has found. “Coming out with us once will give you a snapshot in time of our continuous journey through space. Coming regularly will build on this and reinforce what we started together while adding in other elements that really can be gained only by you experiencing them through the passage of time. "To consciously experience this journey will literally take you ‘time’. Every year is different; the two giant planets and Mars are featuring through 2018, with Jupiter displaying the dance of its four big Galilean moons every night and Saturn’s rings in a perfectly ‘opened out’ position for unbelievable views through our serious telescopes. The monthly cycle of the Moon as it passes each of the planets in turn is one of the cycles that is particularly easy to tune into in Broome with our big tides easily illustrating its effect,” he says. Greg is reluctant to pick a single cosmic favourite. “Every star has its own character; they are as unique as you and I. When you add to the feeling you get from them, their distance and their relative brightness, you can begin to appreciate our place amongst them. This
feeling is one of peace, and wonder, and awe. "Naturally, I have a few favourites; Arcturus is the fourth-brightest star in the sky and at 37 light years away (light travels at 300,000km per second, so light years are used to measure the vast distances in space) is a reasonably close neighbour of ours. It is also one of the fastest moving stars in the sky relative to the other stars - although you won’t see any of this movement in your whole lifetime.” With his fame now international, and the publication of his book Earth Turning Consciousness – an Exercise in Planetary Awareness, Greg has certainly come a long way from when he started “tuning into” the
tidal movements for his job as a pearl diver. “My book is a response to the thousands of people who have been asking for a followup journey they have begun with us at Astro Tours. It is a practical manual that you can use to see the very real movement of the Earth through space for yourself and make this journey real in your life. ‘Why didn’t anyone show us this before?’ is one of the most common questions we hear at Astro Tours,’’ says Greg. “Showing people from all over the world our world-class Kimberley skies is such a pleasure, with no need to tell them anything at all for them to be blown away by the sheer beauty. Watching people's reactions is my favourite thing in the whole world and this is even before I tell them anything about what they are looking at.” For more information on Greg’s Astro Tours, and his book, visit visitbroome.com.au or call Greg on 0417 949 958.

It’s a well known fact that eating spicy food in a steamy climate is the perfect combination. Broome has plenty of options for diners who enjoy food with a kick. By GABI MILLS.
LITTLE INDIAN The masters of spicy cuisine, the team at Little Indian can regularly be spotted in the kitchen blending their own spices to make the curry pastes which form the basis for so much of the menu. You’ll notice the difference this makes when you tuck into their delicious fare; choose the beef vindaloo and you’ll get a real hit of southern Indian cooking. The succulent beef is slow cooked with potato and the homemade vinegar-rich vindaloo sauce is a real treat. There’s also the chance to try a Kashmiri goat curry, the meat cooked on the bone with onion, herbs and spices, finished with coriander. Vegetarians are well-catered for as well – try the paneer matar masala (green pea and cottage cheese cooked in a mild sauce, flavoured with ginger and coriander or the subj dal (red lentil and veggie curry). Broome’s proximity to the coastline is reflected in the seafood on offer too: you’ll find a barramuni Goan-style curry, cooked with cashew nuts, brown onions and plenty of rich coconut milk, and prawn masala really hits the spot with some 32

There are half a dozen or so dishes, from a wholesome chicken congee with traditional condiments on the side to the brilliantly named bimbimbap, Korea’s answer to the ultimate rice dish. You’ll find veggies, meat and a fried egg as well as perfectly cooked rice – a filling, Korean take on nasi goreng. If lunch or dinner is on the cards and you are looking for classic fish and chips available with either local wild caught barramundi or threadfin salmon, or an afternoon feasting on plates of scallops, oysters and prawns, the Wharf Restaurant has something for every taste and budget. We kicked off our feast with a selection of oysters – au naturel with lemon on the side. We took advice from the friendly waitress who suggested we opt for the Kimberley chilli mud crab – a speciality of the kitchen and caught locally. It’s expensive, but such a memorable treat and one not to be missed
if you love your seafood feisty and fresh. Chilli sauce on the side peps things up considerably. Another dish unique to this part of the world is a plate of barramundi wings. It sounds extraordinary - and it is. Barramundi ‘wings’ – or its fins – are deepfried and present with beautiful white flaky flesh and a crispy fin. They are dressed with a zingy Thai salsa. Other menu options included grilled WA marron, whole crispy reef fish and BBQ prawns to name a few. There are Asian specialities available too (with seafood of course). Anastasia’s of Broome offers next level service to its clientele, with bespoke jewellery a speciality. By LEAH MCLENNAN.
T
he Kimberley’s swathes of land and sea have given jewellery lovers so much - rare pink diamonds and lustrous pearls to name a few. Anastasia’s of Broome, in the heart of Chinatown, is the perfect place to see a range of these organic gems and jewels. “We have a very extensive range,” says co-owner Peter 'Hans' Hansen. “This includes the fabulous Broome pearls, both in loose form and made-up pieces. “You can also design your own bespoke piece and have it made here.” Anastasia’s of Broome on Carnarvon Street also carries the famous Argyle pink diamonds, the Ellendale yellows, as well as blues, blacks and the traditional white diamonds. The store also offers the whole range of jewellery services, including repairs, replacing watch batteries and making
engagement and wedding rings. “We are passionate about helping people through engagement, wedding and special occasions, with the finest quality gold, diamonds, other precious and semi precious stones,” Peter says. “If we don’t have it in stock we can get it for you.” Although the store has been the trusted family jewellers for nearly 50 years, Peter and Jill Hansen only took over the store last year. Jill has had a love of jewellery from a young age and has extensive experience with South Sea Pearls, having worked in all aspects of the industry for 25 years. Over the past 15 years, she has developed her own internationally popular range of jewellery called Lust Pearls, which features pearls with inlaid diamonds. Only a limited number of each design is
released. The pieces are sold in New York, online and at Anastasia’s of Broome. “Generally it’s limited to only 10 pieces to ensure that the wearer stands out when ever and wherever it is worn,” she says. Jill says she was “thrilled” to see a Lust Pearls item worn at last year’s Oscars. Back in Broome, both Peter and Jill pride themselves on giving their customers a complete jewellery experience, which includes everything from answering any questions customers might have about the items to follow-up repairs. “When you are buying a precious, unique gem that is one of a kind you need to know what you are buying is real and valuable,” Jill says. “We can help you pick the perfect piece and if it is for that someone special we can also help you to make it a memorable occasion.”

ourists arrive in Broome for many reasons, but for some, there’s just one thing on their mind: sightseeing the Kimberley’s incredible landscape from the skies. From April onwards the spectacular scenery of the Kimberley region begins to take centre stage, and few are better placed to appreciate it than King Leopold Air. “The Kimberley has some unique and spectacular scenery,” a spokesman for King Leopold Air says. “Our tours take in the remote areas to make the adventure more exciting. “Our scenic flights are the best way to see these amazing sights and experience the unique areas of the Kimberley.” King Leopold Air’s tours include flying over the Buccaneer Archipelago and Horizontal Falls, with a stopover at Cape Leveque. Visit Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm or fly over the remote Prince Regent National Park and the stunning Mitchell Falls, or visit the Bungle Bungles or Geiki Gorge on a day tour. New to King Leopold Air’s tour schedule is the Bundy Cultural Experience at Cape Leveque, which showcases the traditional fishing of the Djarindjin, as well as Dreamtime storytelling and traditional bush-survival skills. “All our tours include the ground

components that put you right into the attractions,” he explains. “All our pilots are highly trained and ensure the passengers enjoy their experience, with complimentary transfers, a water bottle and a personalised tour map on arrival. “Our well-maintained high-wing aircraft have wide passenger windows for better viewing.” It is King Leopold’s pilots who make the tours unforgettable. “We handpick our pilots to to make the tour enjoyable for the customers," he says. “Our pilots make the customers feel very welcome, and provide them with a lot of information, answering any questions along the way. They have a good understanding of the area and are a tour guide as well as a pilot.”
King Leopold Air offers visitors to the region the opportunity to see the Kimberley at its untouched best. “The Kimberley is such a unique, remote area and the best way to view it is by air,” he says. “We like to impress our customers with a memorable experience.” King Leopold Air, kingleopoldair.com.au, 08 9193 7155. The allure of pearls An Allure South Sea Pearl is the perfect souvenir of your stay in Broome, says Lisa Shearon.
W
hen Bill Reed and Lindsay Youd began Allure South Sea Pearls a decade ago, they couldn’t have quite anticipated the public’s response to their pearls. Originally sold through select retail jewellery stores on the east coast of Australia, Bill and Lindsay rebranded their flagship showroom in Broome as Allure South Sea Pearls in 2014, in response to the brand’s growing success. Last year, Allure launched its first boutique in Perth. Allure South Sea Pearls’ success is due in no small part to its founders, Bill and Lindsay. With a combined 80 years’ experience in the pearling industry and an unwavering passion for their craft, the two men are dedicated to South Sea pearls. Bill has more than 50 years’ experience as a marine biologist and pearl farmer. His contributions to the pearling industry have been recognised by the Australian and Tahitian governments, and Bill was awarded the Order of Australia in 2012. Lindsay is a second-generation watchmaker/jeweller, who became captivated by South Sea pearls in his father’s workshop more than 30 years ago. “A miracle of nature, South Sea pearls have an inner glow from the layers of nacre reflecting light from within,” Lindsay says. “Every pearl is unique, which means that no two pieces are ever the same.” In addition to the uniqueness of every pearl, Bill and Lindsay are proud that Australia produces the finest-quality South Sea pearls in the world – known for their size, and stunning white, silver and pink tones. “Allure has the largest collection of South Sea pearl jewellery in the country, featuring 42

one-of-a-kind couture designs as well as timeless classics,” Lindsay says. “Handcrafted at our Broome showroom, there is a range of designs available to capture any audience. “Many of the pieces in the couture collection are inspired by Broome – the home of pearling in Australia.” Both men have strong ties to Broome; Bill has lived in Broome since the mid1970s, while Lindsay lived in Broome in the early 1990s, and now visits monthly. “We both love Broome’s wonderful warm winters, the multicultural diversity and sense of community in a relatively small, remote town,” Lindsay says. “It also is the gateway to the beautiful Kimberley region.” Allure South Sea Pearls use only the finest-quality pearls and diamonds in their collection. “The designs and craftsmanship are of the highest standard and will last for generations to come,” Lindsay says. “Many customers return time after time, even if they live thousands of kilometres away. This level of trust and support is both humbling and rewarding after 30 years of

dedication to our clients.” With the Allure South Sea Pearls showroom such a success in Broome, Bill and Lindsay feel the time is right to open a boutique in Perth. Lindsay and Bill are enjoying the next chapter of their home-grown business, with the continuing success of their Broome locations and a growing presence in Perth. Dedicated to the pursuit of perfect pearls, the two men will continue to proudly showcase these incredible gems of nature. as well as South Sea Gold Pearls from Australia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Indonesia, offering the most exclusive selection available in one location. Lyndal and Prudence Galwey have each bought their own unique flair to the Galwey brand, but one thing has remained constant. “We believe that choosing your pearls in person is the best way to appreciate and understand their true beauty, as each piece is unique and individual,” says Prudence. “We encourage you to collaborate with us to create the right piece just for you, whether it’s a single pearl for a ring, a pair of earrings, a pearl bracelet or 30 or so to
make a strand.” At Galwey, says Prudence, they believe that each customer should have confidence in their purchase. With every purchase, Galwey provide a photograph of each piece for insurance and identification purposes, and a certificate of provenance authenticating the origin of each Pearl purchased. “We look forward to welcoming you to our showroom located on Dampier Terrace where you will experience a warm welcome with real old fashioned customer service from our friendly knowledgeable staff,” says Prudence. T
he sun gives us our spirit, and the moon, our soul. As they alight with planet Earth, Broome’s dramatic tidal phenomenon provides the most tranquil and romantic backdrop to unwind, relax and explore. It’s in the spring tide week that this planetary interaction is most visible, exposing the tidal flats and all the inhabitants within them twice a day. There are many beaches providing access to the tidal flats of the bay, but really there is only one way to venture right out onto them - and that’s by hovercraft.
Broome Hovercraft will transport you across the tidal floor to see dinosaur footprints in old petrified forests on the other side of Roebuck Bay. Gliding along the tidal edge, take in the view as pelicans, egrets, osprey and sea eagles pass by. Marvel at the dramatic rich red Pindan cliff backdrop as you land on a secluded patch of pristine coastline. As the tide continues to fall, you’ll then head off into the bay, settle down on the sandy sea floor and let your pilots look after you with sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres as the sun finally sets,
silhouetting the Broome peninsula, the sun’s rays glistening off ripples in the tidal floor. Visit visitbroome.com.au to book a ride with Broome Hovercraft.

Alfred’s War tells the heartbreaking story of one of Australia’s forgotten Indigenous wartime heroes.
WIN
True mateship
A
lfred’s War is a powerful story that unmasks the lack of recognition given to Australian Indigenous servicemen who returned from the WWI battlelines. Alfred was just a young man when he was injured and shipped home from France. Neither honoured as a returned soldier or offered government support afforded to non-Indigenous servicemen, Alfred took up a solitary life walking the back roads – billy tied to his swag, finding work where he could. Alfred was a forgotten soldier. Although he had fought bravely in the Great War, as an Aboriginal man he wasn’t classed as a citizen of his own country. Yet Alfred always remembered his friends in the trenches and the mateship they had shared. Sometimes he could still hear the never-

ending gunfire in his head, the whispers of Diggers praying. Every year on ANZAC Day, Alfred walked to the nearest town, where he would quietly stand behind the people gathered, paying homage to his fallen mates. Rachel Bin Salleh’s poignant narrative opens our hearts to the sacrifice and contribution that Indigenous people have made to Australia’s war efforts, the true extent of which is only now being revealed. About the author Rachel Bin Salleh is descended from the Nimunburr, Bunuba and Yawuru peoples of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. She has worked in publishing for over 20 years and is passionate about Indigenous people telling their stories. Rachel lives in Broome with her family. Alfred’s War is her first book.

BROOME'S LIFEBLOOD The history of pearling in Broome comes to life at the Pearl Luggers Museum, exhibiting artefacts and images which paint a vivid picture of this fascinating industry.
Discover Broome's rich pearling history Before modern diving equipment, the life of a diver working in Broome’s pearling industry was often fraught with danger, discovers Leah McLennan during a fascinating Pearl Luggers Museum tour.

metallic brown-coloured diver’s helmet, with a green tarnish on top, sits on a wooden bench at the Pearl Luggers Museum in Broome. The brass ‘hat’, manufactured by the London-based company Siebe and Gorman, came from far across the sea in the 1880s, it sits next to a Heinke & Co helmet which was made in 1908. Now it’s part of the display in the Pearl Lugger Museum’s Tender Store, an original shed that was used to store diving equipment after each season ended in December. All manner of intriguing, rare objects, including opium pipes and mother of pearl buttons, line the white-painted wood walls
of this atmospheric shed. Outside in the tropical sun, moored at the replica jetty there are two luggers. The Sam Male, a 52-foot, jarrah-planked ketch built in the 1950s and also the newer model DMcD. On the edge of Roebuck Bay, the museum is in the heart of Chinatown and just a stone’s throw from the historic Roebuck Bay Hotel. Running your hand along the warm wooden hull of the Sam Male while looking out at the thick green mangroves that line Dampier Creek, it’s remarkable to think this very spot was once a hive of pearling activity. Over 400 luggers were registered in Broome at one point in time, our guide Tiara Lawford explains. “It is said if the luggers were all in dock at the same time you could walk from Streeter's Jetty just to the left of here, all the way to the Mecure Hotel near Town Beach without touching the sand. “Unfortunately, not many of these luggers exist today along with the equipment. “But we are very fortunate here at Pearl Luggers to have such a great collection of these artifacts.” Our group has been hanging off Tiara’s every word since she started telling us the incredible story of Broome’s pearling industry – from the days when Aboriginal women were forced to dive for pearl shell, right up to the present. An Aboriginal woman from the Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome, Tiara’s commentary resonates deeply as she describes the dark side of the pearling history, which is often referred to as the ‘secret history’. “Has anybody seen this statue around Broome that was created by WA sculptors Joan and Charlie Smith? “ she asks. “Do you know what it is?” The tour participants, all visitors to Broome, reply that they don’t know the meaning of the statue. “It is a bronze statue of a pregnant Aboriginal woman rising out of a wave with a pearl shell in her hand. “It is symbolic of the early days of the industry here in Broome when Aboriginal women and children were captured and sold to shell masters who would force them to dive for pearl shells. This trade is more visitbroome.com.au
commonly known as blackbirding.” She describes how the women dived to depths of over 25 metres without any equipment and suffered everything from nosebleeds and the bends, to attacks from sharks and sea snakes. By 1884, the industry changed dramatically when Edwin Streeter arrived in Broome, bringing with him the hardhat diving suits. “In the beginning the majority of the divers to use these suits were from Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia – outnumbering Australian and European workers by almost 100 to one.” Tiara points out a large framed photograph showing Nori Ejiri, a Japanese man known as Broome’s best diver, moving through the murky water, picking up pearl shells from the seabed. He’s wearing the huge metal helmet and has layers of woolen clothing under his suit to keep him warm. Behind Ejiri there is another diver. He’s wearing what we recognise today as a modern wetsuit. “Far more advanced, maneuverable, and quicker to put on, they were brought to Broome in the 1970s and there was a challenge set to determine the superior suit,” she says. Sixteen hard hat divers competed with eight wetsuit divers to see how much shell they could gather. It is said that when they returned a week later, the wetsuit divers had retrieved double the shell of the hardhat divers. The modernising of the industry then began with hardhat diving suits and luggers being phased out while wetsuits, aluminium boats and advanced diving equipment made their way in. While Tiara prepares a tasting plate of pearl meat (which retails at over $150kg) we
watch a short black and white film, called The Pearlers. Made in the late 1940s, this film goes on board the boats that worked off the coast of Broome from March to December each year. Beautifully filmed, it captures the atmosphere and the danger involved in the search for shell. One of the last scenes of the film shows an unusual wooden box, which was used to store any pearls that might be found while at sea. Upon returning to shore the box was turned over to the lugger’s owner. The little ‘safe’, which was called a Percy Box, was designed so that once a pearl was deposited through the trap at the top; you could not get it out – unless you had the key. As Tiara invites us to try the delicious pearl meat (which has been marinated in soy and chilli sauce) she shows us a pearl box. Tasting the salty pearl meat, while holding the wooden box and smelling its ‘old-smell’ odor, makes you feel like you have experienced Broome’s history using all your senses.
She continues to explain that despite it’s dark history, the pearling industry is still thriving in Broome today, however in a different way, and it is now both sustainable and environmentally friendly. “During WW2, many of the Japanese pearlers were interned to Cowra in NSW and very few returned to Broome. The majority of the boats and equipment had been burnt or abandoned and there weren't many people in town to work. The invention of plastic "confirmed "as such that the industry was dead, as mother of pearl was no longer required in the volumes it used to be.” “This is when the industry shifted to focusing on the culturing of pearls, as opposed to the collection of shell. If you visit Willie Creek Pearl Farm, you can learn all about how it’s done today.” “Stick around if you want to talk some more about Broome’s incredible history,” Tiara says at the end of the 1.5-hour tour. And unsurprisingly, no one heads for the door. Pearl Luggers tours can be booked by visiting williecreekpearls.com.au or call 9192 0000.

Australia’s Pearl capital is famous for its pearl shops showcasing beautiful pearls and jewellery from all over the world but if you’re hunting for a “Broome pearl”, where should you start?

Hunting the
Broome Pearl THE STORY OF THE now famous Australian Pearl, often referred to locally as a 'Broome pearl', actually started on the remote Kimberley Coast north of Broome. Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, the first Australianowned and operated pearl farm, is now internationally renowned for producing some of the world's finest and most valuable pearls. Given this, it’s hard to imagine that founder Dean Murdoch Brown could have been imprisoned for daring to culture pearls when he entered the industry in 1946, but nevertheless, it's true. The reason behind this strange turn of events was because Broome’s original pearling

industry was all about the value of the shell and not pearls. There are a wealth of interesting stories to uncover in Broome’s extraordinary pearling heritage; for instance, not many people know that Broome was built on the back of buttons (not pearls) made from mother of pearl, and it wasn’t until the downfall of this industry that it even became legal to culture pearls locally. It’s a fascinating history of boom and bust that begins tens of thousands of years ago with the First Australians’ use of pearl shell and goes on to feature incredible pioneers such as Dean, one of the original ‘pearl shellers’ who was to forge an
industry that has earned Broome the title of home to the world’s finest pearls. It’s fair to assume that most people have heard of the ‘Broome Pearl’ and those who have will probably know they are considered the queen of all pearls. But that’s where our collective understanding of Australian pearls often ends. Where, how and by whom are the pearls grown? What makes them the best in the world? This great absence of knowledge surrounding the pearling industry was the driving force behind Dean’s grandson and third generation pearler, James Brown’s, decision to open the doors to the public to his family's farm, some 50 years after it was

established. Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm today remains Australia's longest running familyowned pearling enterprise. The journey for most treasure hunters starts in Broome and the logical first step on your pearl quest is a visit to Cygnet Bay's Pearl Exhibition in Chinatown which brings you face to face with a live pearl shell, Indigenous pearl shell artefacts, a Timeline Wall (explaining how the town and the pearling industry all came to be) and a complimentary 20-minute documentary . There's also a world first – an astounding 22.24mm perfectly round, fine quality pearl from Cygnet Bay on display, believed to be the largest of its shape and quality ever produced. Taste the delicacy that is ‘pearl meat’, get hands-on with a pearl harvest side by side with experts at the grading table, enrich your pearling knowledge and discover all types of hidden gems at the Cygnet Bay Broome Boutique before setting off on a pearl farm adventure beyond Broome. Located north of Broome at the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm is nestled among one of the least populated, unspoilt coastal environments left on earth. While getting on with their core business of producing Australian South Sea pearls, it has now become a passion of the Brown family to share this incredible Kimberley marine environment they
call home, to impart their experience and expertise in the many facets of cultured pearl farming, and to offer the opportunity to directly engage with the deeply fascinating Indigenous cultural heritage of the area. A visit to this extraordinary part of the world is an opportunity to entirely immerse yourself in the great story that is the Australian Pearl, whether it's a day trip to the pearl farm with a dip in the infinity pool, an á la carte lunch overlooking the bay, or an overnight stay on the Peninsula as the guests of James and the Brown family. “At both our Pearl Farm Gallery and
‘Kimberley Lily’ Collection
Broome Boutique, a cross-section of the recent Cygnet Bay harvest is on display for guests to view,” says James. “Why not handpick a loose pearl, which can be made into jewellery we like to call ‘Just for You’?” Perhaps you might even like to choose the pearl you have just seen harvested before your eyes? As one of only a handful of pearl farmers left culturing the magnificent Australian South Sea pearl today, it’s little wonder that selecting your own locally grown pearl is such a rare offering. The award-winning team at Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures provides incredible adventures in one of the most remote regions on earth. By MATTHEW MILLS.
D
escribed by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”, it’s little wonder that the Horizontal Falls in the Kimberley region is at the top of Tourism WA’s bucketlist experiences. So-called because of the way the water gushes horizontally rather than vertically, these spectacular falls are literally unlike anything else in the world. Located in Talbot Bay, within the stunning Buccaneer Archipelago, the Horizontal Falls are only accessible by boat, or a seaplane/ helicopter flight from Broome or Derby. As the only operator based at Talbot Bay, Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures (HFSA) are ideally placed to tick off bucketlist aspirations. They provide intrepid explorers with the chance to experience one of the most unique waterfalls in the world, and the opportunity to view and explore the remote and majestic Kimberley region. It’s perhaps no surprise then that Troy Thomas and his team have won multiple awards for their adventure offering – most recently, scooping two national tourism gold awards for adventure tourism and unique accommodation, and the prestigious Sir David Brand Award in WA. “A combination of the incredible natural environment along with the quality customer service, equipment and seamless delivery of the product is what makes the company a success,” says Troy.

In addition to the hugely popular Horizontal Falls adventure, the team have added a new tour to their stable of once-ina-lifetime experiences: the Thousand Island and Horizontal Falls day tour. Guests begin their day trip in style, leaving from stunning Cape Leveque with a cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago on board the company’s luxurious, high speed, state-of-the-art 15-metre vessel. After the cruise, they’ll get airborne at breathtaking Paradise Point. On board a seaplane, experience a scenic, low-level flight to Talbot Bay where they will enjoy the amazing Horizontal Falls by fast boat and a relaxing cruise around Cyclone Creek, followed by morning tea and time to swim in a shark cage before returning to Paradise Point. The tour has been put together in partnership with local Traditional Owners and there’s the opportunity to enjoy a Jilinya cultural tour on the land, where guests can browse traditional works of local art and craft. Then after a BBQ lunch on the beach where freshly caught local barramundi is served, it’s all aboard the luxury boat as it zips through the azure seas around the Buccaneer Archipelago to Cape Leveque. It’s also possible to join this tour from Broome – luxury aircraft transfers to Cape Leveque are available. Horizontal Falls Seaplanes Adventures, 08 9192 1172, horizontalfallsadventures.com.au or visitbroome.com.au
Fast facts >> The tours are conducted seasonally due to weather (late March to late October) and depart from both Broome and Derby. >> Tours are fully inclusive and include travel by land, sea and air to a number of amazing Kimberley sites, including Beagle Bay, Cape Leveque, One Arm Point, Buccaneer Archipelago and the Horizontal Falls. >> Passengers have the option to stay overnight at the Horizontal Hotel, and there are also four-day extended tours to give visitors the chance to really explore the region. >> During the dry season the region is subject to fluctuating tides, so to ensure guests only experience the Falls at premium viewing, HFSA does not travel during neap tide periods (when tides are at their lowest). This means that there are only approximately 200 touring days available each season. visitbroome.com.au

It’s a place where amateurs and experts can get out on the water and experience a great day catching a fish that they can take home for dinner, fit in some world-class sport fishing or try their luck catching the elusive Kimberley barramundi. It’s a place where the magic of the calm turquoise water and the massive variety of species on offer will have you coming back for more, year after year. The buy-back of the Roebuck Bay commercial net licences seems to be working well with great captures of threadfin salmon being recorded this year. Roebuck Bay is an awesome recreational fishery; it’s easily accessible, often sheltered from the weather and many different species of fish can be targeted. Barramundi can be caught in Roebuck Bay and the local creeks, with the advantage that you don’t need a big boat to get out there. If you don’t have your own boat, there are quite a few charter operators with smaller boats that will take you fishing in the bay, otherwise if you’re an experienced sailor, you can hire your own boat for the day. In my opinion, the reef fishing is where Broome really stands out from the crowd. Unlike many places around Australia, Broome is renowned for its great weather, calm conditions offshore and not too much swell which makes it perfect for everyone.

Add to the mix that we have awesome fishing and it’s pretty unbeatable. A massive variety of fish can be encountered with many species that break personal bests. Reef fishing is also a great way to catch a fish for dinner. You can get out to the offshore reefs in your own boat or hire a boat, but the best way to experience it properly is to jump on board a charter. A typical full day charter with our company will see you targeting fish for dinner throughout the day. We will
usually fish a few different spots to try for a trevally to give everyone’s arms a good stretch. Then at some stage,we will do some trolling for Spanish mackerel. It’s a fantastic way to experience the big variety of fish on offer. Many locals move to Broome because the fishing is so good. There aren’t many places in the world where you could get up early on the right tide, head to one of the local creeks and catch a barramundi. An hour offshore would see you in some deeper

water where you could send some baits to the bottom in search of a red emperor or coral trout for dinner. After catching dinner and a short drive north, you could run out a spread of teasers, baits and lures in search of a sailfish. On the way home there are a couple of reefs where you are guaranteed a
giant trevally or a Spanish mackerel. What a day this would make! Most people only dream of catching these fish and we could do it all in one day. It wouldn’t do Broome fishing justice unless I didn't talk a little more about the mighty sailfish. They are typically found to
the north of Broome, near Willie Creek and Barred Creek. The best method of catching a Broome sailfish is the switch bait technique. Briefly, you would troll around a spread of lures and teasers that would attract the fish to the boat. Once a fish comes to the boat, a wellpresented bait can be sent out to the fish and the teaser pulled out of the way; the fish eats the bait . . . Simple really! Or is it? Your best bet is to jump on one of the dedicated sailfish charters - these guys are the experts and you are almost guaranteed a fish. For all the up to date info on Broome fishing and fishing charters be sure to chat to the staff at the Broome Visitors Centre. See you on the water. Visit visitbroome.com.au

products and experience leave you feeling relaxed and revitalised. If you’re in the mood for a massage, try the Hot Rocks Massage. It’s a treatment using ancient stone therapy, and the rocks themselves have been carved from the Kimberley’s ancient primordial stones to suit very specific needs. BALI HAI – EXPERIENCE THE EXOTIC Tucked away in the lush and tropical gardens you will find The Bali Hai Spa, only a stroll
away from Broome Cable Beach. Here you can be pampered and rejuvenated using an exclusive range of exotic Balinese therapies. Step into one of seven private rooms, each named after the elements in the traditional Indonesian language, to begin your holistic spa treatment. Exotic blends of herbs and spices will elevate your senses as you indulge in one of their luxurious body wraps, massages or facials. The Balinese Coco Hot Oil Wrap will melt away any tension trapped in your muscles. First, receive a coconut and cinnamon exfoliation massage before the warm oil is drizzled over your body, which is then wrapped in a muslin sheath to best absorb the rich nutrients. A rejuvenating facial cleanse and head massage accompany the wrap to leave your mind and body completely at ease. The Kimberley Rock Stone Therapy is one of their native Australian offerings.
A collection of warm flat stones from the riverbeds of the Kimberley are used to achieve a fluid, relaxing massage. It begins with a warm stone foot bath that is designed to awaken your senses and trigger the reflexology points of the feet. Next, the stones are placed on various chakra points of the body while receiving a head massage to leave you in a state of pure tranquillity. The Passion of the Pearl is another favourite. This sensual delight can be enjoyed alone or as a couple. Begin with a massage before an invigorating Mother of Pearl and Passionfruit body scrub. Cocoa butter is then drizzled over the body while a facial cleanse and coconut oil head massage are performed. Finally, slip into a smooth coconut and rose petal bath and indulge with a tropical fruit cocktail. After you emerge from your treatment,
take a dip in the cool plunge pool or lay on the Balinese day bed to prolong your state of relaxation. Visit balihairesort.com.au
CABLE BEACH CLUB – A LUXURY MELTING POT Cable Beach Club’s Chahoya Spa by L’Occitane is a complete sensory experience that draws on ingredients from the French region of Provence to soothe and energise. The name ‘Chahoya’ itself is a nod to Broome’s Japanese pearling history, being the Japanese word for pamper. The interior design of the spa pays homage to Broome’s native roots, adorned with the Dreamtime Series by Sir Sidney Nolan, one of Australia’s most significant and internationally acclaimed artists. Chahoya Spa, hidden within a tropical oasis, features seven distinct cabins to suit both provincial and local themes. This includes the Dreamtime Immortelle, Dreamtime Lavender, Dreamtime Almond, Dreamtime Shea, Dreamtime Akuna, Nolan Cabin and Kimberley Cabin (Dreamtime Akuna is the name of Chohoya’s Vichy Cabin; Akuna is the Aboriginal meaning of flowing water). Once you enter your chosen cabin, you’ll instantly smell the fresh scent of Provence – a focus on fragrance is a signature quality of Chohoya Spa by L’Occitane. Prior to any treatment you’ll also be pampered with a ‘welcome ritual’; a footbath performed with aromachologie effervescent sugar cubes. Moments of delights such as this, as well as complimentary herbal tea, are a L’Occitane speciality.
SPOIL THE SENSES Choose one of the locallyinspired spa treatments from Bali Hai's spa or Li-Tya at Kimberley Sands Resort and Spa you'll feel renewed and rejeuvenated afterwards.

KIMBERLY WILD GUBINGE – THE KEY TO NATIVE WELLBEING The gubinge fruit – a small plum, native to the Kimberley region – is fast becoming known as the superfood of Australia. With similar properties to the hugely popular acai berry from the Amazon, and the maqui berry from Chile, the gubinge fruit has the added benefit of being in its freshest and most potent state here in the Kimberley. Collected and eaten by Aboriginal people for thousands of years, this fruit has the highest Vitamin C and antioxidant content of any fruit on the planet. For this reason, not only is it a beneficial supplement that can be added to juices, smoothies and sprinkled on food, but it can be applied directly to the skin as a natural therapy. The Kimberley Wild Gubinge is an Indigenous owned business that carefully dehydrates and mills the fruit into a fine powder that can be applied easily to the skin. The bioactive properties within the gubinge powder make it a powerful treatment for acne, rashes, insect bites, dry skin, and sun-damaged skin. KWG are an ethical, social and environmentally responsible source of the gubinge fruit and claim that as Stewards of the Land they’re compelled to keep their carbon footprint to an absolute minimum. But it’s not just their land that they’re passionate about, they’re also committed to providing economic opportunities for Aboriginal people of their community through their wealth of cultural food knowledge. To use the KWG product as a skin treatment, simply mix a teaspoon of their milled gubinge powder with water or your favourite skin oil and combine to make a paste. Apply directly to your skin as a facial mask, which should be left for 5-7 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Alternatively, try a bite of KWG’s Gubinge Wafers to ingest the benefits of the superfood. Exclusive to KWG, they are a delicate, crisp, tangy wafer that is loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants. All the same nutritional benefits of the KWG Powder but in a wafer for a bit of extra crunch. Visit kimberleywildgubinge.com.au 70
