Experience the Journey from Shell to Showroom
A Broome icon, Willie Creek Pearl Farm is a national award-winning gem beckoning you to come and experience it.
It has been over 35 years since the alluring Australian South Sea Pearl brought the Banfield family, owners of Willie Creek Pearls, to Broome. The Western Australian family business has grown to include the multi award-winning Willie Creek Pearl Farm tour, historical Pearl Luggers tour and three stunning pearl jewellery showrooms in Broome. The business has also expanded into Perth, encompassing pearl harvest experiences and four jewellery showrooms. Three generations of family work in the business today, providing a personal touch across each location.
A Willie Creek Pearl Farm tour is a must-do experience while visiting Broome. This is the home of the Pearl of Western Australia, where the Willie Creek Pearls’ team sustainably produce the best pearls in the world; Australian South Sea Pearls. Gain an exclusive insight into the journey of the pearl in modern farming, from shell to showroom.
Experience the beauty of the Kimberley region as you journey along the rich, pindan track to the farm, via 4WD or an airconditioned coach with guided commentary. Upon arrival, you are greeted by the magnificent scenery at Willie Creek Pearl Farm, where the tides and nutrient rich warm waters combine to create ideal conditions for the Pinctada maxima oyster, the world’s largest pearl producing oyster, to thrive.
The tour takes you through the journey of the pearl, starting in the Pearl Oyster Nursery. Here, you will learn all about the delicate operations involved in seeding the oysters, before you experience a beautiful cruise on the calm, tranquil waters of the farm’s namesake, Willie Creek, to get a closer glimpse of the oyster long lines — and if you are lucky, the resident crocodiles as well. Next, relax and enjoy a delicious serving of homemade damper and refreshments on the deck outside Harvest Café while you soak in the atmosphere and stunning scenery.
Each tour includes a Pearling Masterclass, which features a live pearl harvest where an oyster is opened, and a pearl revealed. The most fascinating aspect of pearl farming is that you never know what is inside until the oyster, after two years of meticulous care, is finally opened in a breathtaking moment, and the pearl discovered. For those unable to travel to Broome, Willie Creek Pearls brings the pearl harvesting experience to you in the heart of Perth, at their Elizabeth Quay showroom.
A world-class attraction highlighting a unique and authentically Australian product, experience for yourself why this business was recently inducted into the WA Tourism Awards’ Hall of Fame. Willie Creek Pearls won gold to retain the State’s top tourist attraction title for the third consecutive year at the 2023 WA Tourism Awards, as well as a gold and bronze medal at the 2022 Australian Tourism Awards.
Further expanding their operations, Willie Creek Pearls is collaborating with MedTech company Marine Biomedical to supply Mother of Pearl shell for the development of lifechanging medical products. A group of visionaries, including Willie Creek Pearls Chairman Robert Banfield, have invested in the incredible potential of using natural marine derived organisms as a substitute for synthetic materials in orthopaedic trauma medicine. Marine Biomedical now owns patented technology PearlBone™, which converts nacre from Mother of Pearl shell into a medical device that biomimics human bone formation. THE WILD & Untamed
Captured in images
Photographers Matt Deakin and Allysha
Cartledge reveal the hidden wonders of Broome’s wildlife.
found their muse, having fallen in love with the wealth of unique wildlife and diversity of landscapes that define this special corner of the world.
Through their photography and conservation efforts, they aim to raise awareness of the wildlife in Broome and help protect its precious species for many years to come.
“Broome is an ideal destination for wildlife because of the diversity and rawness,” says Allysha, who has been captivated by wildlife for as long as she can remember. “It is still so untouched and there are still many areas you can go and be completely in nature, surrounded by so much life.”
Since arriving in Broome early 2019, Allysha has spent countless hours immersed in nature, seeking out the perfect shot with her handheld Nikon Z6 or drone. Her passion for wildlife is hard to miss when viewing her work. “Getting the ideal shot usually takes countless hours of being patient, either sitting in a bush with my camera, looking strange to everyone else,” Allysha laughs, “or flying the drone looking for marine life.
In Broome, where the land meets the sea in a spectacular dance of colours and life, there is so much that is hidden to the untrained eye. Blue banded bees are seasonally present along the purple dune flowers, jumping spiders show off their mating dances in the dunes along Cable Beach, and the explosion of population of various frogs and reptiles through the wet season is a natural spectacle not to miss. It's here, in Broome, that photographers Matt Deakin and Allysha Cartledge have
"It always involves adventure, going for walks or drives, looking for the right type of environment, food sources or waterholes for the certain species you're in search of.”
For Allysha, her favourite subjects are often the most challenging to capture — birds that flit unpredictably and marine animals that remain elusive. “Gouldian finches have definitely been a favourite of mine,” she shares, recalling the thrill of recently finding them in the Dampier Peninsula. “I love the red tailed black
cockatoos too. Every time I see them, I'm in awe of their unique energy.”
Whether she’s hiding in a bush to capture a rare bird or flying her drone to scout for marine life, Allysha’s approach is marked by patience and a deep respect for the natural world.
“Broome is full of wildlife, so my advice for this would be, look around everywhere. Be respectful of the environment. Leave everything as you found it, don't move, disturb, take or leave anything. Even every little rock has an importance for many species. Be patient, just sit for a while and get comfy.”
Meanwhile, Matt Deakin, Allysha’s partner, and partner in crime when it comes to photography, has been photographing Broome’s landscapes for over a decade. His journey began with a focus on the expansive, colourful vistas seen from the sky using his DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone.
Over time, partly thanks to Allysha’s infectious passion for wildlife, Matt’s curiosity led him to explore the animals inhabiting these vivid landscapes.
“In Broome, we are blessed with such a diverse range of wildlife and marine life, some of which are endemic to the region,” says Matt. “The wildlife changes through the seasons too, which gives us new subjects to capture all year round. For example, we get manta rays in autumn, whales in winter, and migratory shorebirds through the summer.
“The more we look, the more we find,” he says, likening the excitement of a new
discovery to that experienced during childhood upon capturing a new Pokémon. Despite venturing out together, Matt and Allysha’s final photos are often vastly different. “Lately, while I'm flying the drone, Allysha is often exploring with her handheld camera, at the edges of bushes, grasslands and under trees to looking for birds, insects and reptiles while I explore from the sky,” says Matt.
Stylistically, Allysha's work tends to be more abstract, dreamlike and gentle while Matt steers towards being bold, colourful and contrasting.
For those visiting Broome with a similar passion for observing or photographing wildlife, Matt and Allysha offer advice and encouragement. They suggest timing trips around the tides and time of year; in particular, exploring the reef and rock pools during low tide, where alien-like creatures reveal themselves to those who take the time to watch.
Matt and Allysha also invite visitors to stop by their stalls at the Broome Markets, where they share their work and stories, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Meanwhile, their social media platforms, @ally.photog and @from.miles. away, provide a glimpse into their daily adventures and the stunning wildlife they encounter.
Through their lenses, Matt and Allysha share with the world the beauty and diversity of Broome — a place that remains, in many ways, untouched and untamed.

Stories from Past to Present journey A cultural
Embark on an insightful tour with Kimberley Cultural Adventures to recognise the rich and enduring Aboriginal culture in and around Broome.
By TORI WILSON
As the temperature cools upon the onset of dry season and the distinctive scent of fresh earth floods the air, memories of days climbing trees, foraging for fruit, and connecting with kin and Country flow back for Nyul Nyul man, Robert Dann.
Born and bred in Broome in the 1970s, Robert hails from the ancestral tribe of the Beagle Bay region within Winawul Country. His childhood brims with happy memories of traditional Aboriginal life, living with his mob of aunties and uncles, brothers and sisters who imparted valuable knowledge and cultural wisdom upon him, daily.
“Back in the early days, I loved it because we didn’t have tv, we didn’t have air conditioner, we had to live day-by-day. Some days we had no food and all that but that's when we would go out and next we would help our parents getting the fish,” says Robert.
“The kids would each week go to one of the aunty and uncles’ places and they’d put up the tarpaulin and listen to the aunties and uncles telling stories until they fell asleep.
“Sometimes the memories and the stories all come (back to me) at once.
“When I talk about going to my classroom, my mum’s sister would take me behind the meatworks. I didn’t turn up to school much so that was my classroom, where she would tell me all about the bush food.”
His mother, a survivor of the Stolen Generation, learned traditional ways from
Robert’s father who passed when he was 10. From both, he absorbed knowledge of bush foods, medicines, fragments of language and the challenging history of Aboriginal life in an Australia where white fella law and black fella law were distinctly different things.
“One memory that stands out is about the Kimberley bauhinia tree (jigal tree),” says Robert.
“I got burned by hot water and had a lot of sores on my leg, so my mum went to the tree and got the bark and said, ‘this is medicine tree.’
“She boiled up the bark and the bark turned red and she said, ‘it is just like a Dettol, it can kill any germs,’ so she bathed me in that for three or four days and I now don’t have any scars on my legs at all.”
Bush medicine is just one of the themes covered in Robert’s immersive cultural tours, which he proudly shares with visitors to Broome or Beagle Bay.
A passionate teacher, Robert founded Kimberley Cultural Adventures in 2013 with the aspiration to share his knowledge of Broome, its First Nations people and a small slice of their 40,000-plus years of local culture.
As a Nyul Nyul man and traditional owner of the Beagle Bay area, the saltwater people, he shares insights specific to his Country, while also highlighting elements of culture that transcend all Aboriginal groups. As a Broome local, his knowledge of the area is vast, encompassing its Aboriginal history, pearling past, the locations of local bush foods, its Stolen Generation history — all touched on in his insightful tours.
“I know the old Broome people. I was born in 1970 so I know the ones who know this country completely. All those people are gone and that knowledge they passed on to me,” says Robert, who notes the traditional
practice of continuing culture through storytelling.
His expertise in bush foods and medicines truly shines throughout each tour as he shares extensive knowledge of local flora and their traditional uses. Kakadu plum (gubinge) is just one of the many bush foods that flourish in Broome, available to sample as part of Robert’s tours.
“In Australia we don’t have an official Indigenous meal,” says Robert. “The kakadu plum, we would get our vitamin c from that. With all the fruits, they’re seasonal and they come at the time people need the property from the fruit,” he says.
“We (also have) the melaleuca, the paper bark tree. The old people would use it back in the days as a flavour for water. They would use the melaleuca leaf to put inside the goanna or kangaroo. The one I got is like lemonade, quite citrusy.”
Trained in traditional Aboriginal dance and an accomplished didgeridoo player, Robert’s natural musical talent, charismatic disposition, drive and determination have all been catalysts for his pursuit as a tour guide. It’s a role that he takes seriously as an opportunity to continue his culture through the sharing of knowledge, but it’s also one that fills him with joy.
As he takes guests to Broome landmarks, along the stretch of coast, and within surrounding bushland; history and culture are put into context, bringing scenes of the past to life.
Though, at times, emotions are stirred as stories of astonishing struggles are recounted; Robert is renowned for his ability to leave guests feeling uplifted, being more connected to the country around them than ever. Kimberley Bush Honey
Harvested in the heart of the Kimberley's untouched wilderness, Walaja Raw Bush Honey is a pure and natural product.
Locally owned Walaja Raw Bush
Honey is collected and bottled in the beautiful and pristine surroundings of Broome, Western Australia. Dubbed 'the last wilderness', the Kimberley has no industry or other pollutants, making our honey as tasty and healthy as it gets. Our honey is 100% organic, natural, unprocessed, and contains no additives.
Roebuck Cattle Station, with a land mass of 750,000 acres, surrounds the historic pearling town of Broome and is owned and managed by the Yawuru Native Title Holders. This pristine and fertile parcel of land boasts several native trees that flower at different times of the year. The Kimberley region is blessed as a beekeeping area in many ways. It is disease free, and our bees thrive in the warm tropical climate. Free from industry and chemicals, our beehives live in perfect harmony with free-range cattle and the sweet-faced wallabies that seek shade and water from the tropical climate.
The main sources of nectar in the dry season for the bees are the Saltwater Paperbark or Melaleuca which flowers from Easter to September and the Wickham's Grevillea which flowers from May to July. Both nectar sources are intense, abundant, and when the flow is on, the bees thrive, collecting nothing else, thus making the honey monofloral.
When the dry season nectar flow dwindles, many of our bees are moved onto a watermelon farm south of Broome to pollinate the crops. Here the bees are primarily employed to boost the melon grower's annual yield by pollinating the small golden melon flower, but a sweet little bonus exists in the hives and with
pollination complete the watermelon nectar is harvested. Like the Kimberley Melaleuca and Grevillea nectar, the watermelon honey has a distinctly unique taste.
Bloodwood, or Tropical Eucalypt, produces nectar that is dark and has a strong and unique flavour with a caramel aftertaste. Nectar flows during the build-up to the wet season, from November, and the trees continue to flower until March.
The Appleby family, beekeeping team father David and son Simon, with mother Dianne and daughter Naomi supporting the honey production, have built up to 450 colonies all situated within Yawuru Country on Roebuck Plains Station. Visit kimberleybushhoney.com.au

Broome’s iconic publisher Magabala Books brings brilliant books to the conversation.
While in Broome, pay a visit to Australia’s leading Indigenous publisher and winner of the 2024 Australian Book Industry Awards' Small Publisher of the Year.
Magabala Books has been celebrating and supporting First Nations stories for over 30 years, from social histories, poetry and memoirs, to children’s picture books, graphic novels and fiction. “We may be biased,” says Magabala Books publisher Rachel Bin Salleh,
“but we think Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writing is the most dynamic, exciting and impressive literature published in Australia.”
Guided by strong cultural principles and a passion for quality literature, Magabala is named after the Nyul Nyul, Nyangumarta, Karajarri and Yawuru language word for ‘bush banana’.
“The bush banana spreads its seeds far and wide,” says Rachel. “The organisation was established in 1984 at a traditional Aboriginal song and dance festival held at Ngumpan near Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia, specifically to protect the rights of storytellers and artists and ensure Aboriginal stories were recorded and shared with future generations.
“When someone buys one of our books, they invest in First Nations creative, cultural and economic futures.”
Magabala Books publishes up to 15 titles a year and in 2024, welcomed new CEO, Gumbaynggirr woman Lilly Brown. Its impressive resume of award-winning titles includes Bruce Pascoe’s best-selling Dark Emu and Young Dark Emu, Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler, and Bindi by Kirli Saunders, the most awarded book in the Publisher’s history.
In 2024 Ali Cobby Eckermann’s poetry book She is the Earth won Book of the Year at the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and in 2023 Magabala Books won the Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publisher of the Year, Oceania Region.
Explore some of Magabala’s latest titles:
Always Was, Always Will Be By Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson
This junior non-fiction book takes a closer look at some of the iconic First Peoples protest movements of the last 200 years, celebrating the strength, wisdom, and bravery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people defending their land and asserting their right to selfdetermination through history.
Beware the Argula By Kirsty Burgu
This is the second title in the Kimberley Art Centre Series, working with artist Kirsty Burgu from Mowanjum Art and Cultural Centre. The story was told to Kirsty as a child and is a warning to kids to not be too greedy and only take what they need from the bush.
Refugia By Elfie
Shiosaki
Refugia is an unparalleled work of vision and political fury from Noongar and Yawuru poet and scholar Elfie Shiosaki. Inspired by the beeliar (Swan River) and the NASA James Webb Space Telescope’s first year of science, this collection draws on colonial archives to contest the occupation of Noongar Country.
Compassion By Julie Janson
Compassion is the dramatised life story of one of Julie Janson’s ancestors who went on trial for stealing livestock in 1800s New South Wales, and it is an exciting and violent story of anticolonial revenge and roaming adventure.
Admire artworks with a deep connection to the land at Black Stump Gallery.
Inspired by Broome
Black Stump Gallery brings a wave of creativity to Broome and the Kimberley through contemporary collections of locally inspired artworks. Owners Emma Blyth and her husband Simon are passionate about the Kimberley, frequently taking time out to explore the region.
Having exhibited Emma’s own artwork in various galleries and pop up shops, as well as undertaking artist residencies at Cable Beach Club over the course of those years, they’ve been dreaming of owning their own gallery in Broome for some time. That dream is now a reality, with the the duo extremely proud to have their own space, which not
only showcases their own exquisite and contemporary works but also exhibits the impressive artworks of other local artists.
“We first headed up north on a camping trip in our old ute back in in 2001 and could not stay away,” says Emma.
“I was absolutely blown away on that initial trip travelling the Gibb River Road and up to Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu. The remoteness and striking landscapes really were the most amazing experiences.
“The roads were pretty rough in the old Landcruiser! Camping under the stars with nothing but a mozzie net and a mattress and an old barbie grate to cook on. It was simple,
and I wouldn’t change a thing. Whistling kites hovering in the smoke of our campfire, catching my first ‘Barra’ and cooking it on the coals whilst watching the full moon rise above the range. It was a trip of a lifetime and we still head out bush as often as possible.”
Located in Old Broome, Black Stump exhibits a wide range of works in various media and locally inspired Australian made art, jewellery, and gifts.
The original artworks exhibited at Black Stump are unique and characterised by a deep connection to the land and its natural beauty. The gallery brings together select artists who showcase their own interpretation of this captivating region of Australia.
“Black Stump products will always be made in Australia,” says Emma. “Proudly, this helps support local businesses and also reduces our carbon footprint.”

Keven Foulkes Adventurer, Guide, and Local Legend
For those lucky enough to join Kev on one of his tours, you’ll find Broome's magic revealed in all its glory, one story at a time.
By TORI WILSON
Brimming with wonderful contrasts and layered with history, culture and local characters; Broome is a coastal gem that beckons those who visit to discover its depth.
With pristine aquamarine beaches and rugged pindan earth; an astonishing formative history with modern-day vibrancy; and a pervasive sense of wonder met with relaxed, regional charm — this unique town is best experienced through the eyes of a local with a deep understanding of its stories and secret spots.
Keven Foulkes, a knowledgeable guide and seasoned adventurer, is one with a knack for imparting the true essence of Broome upon visitors. Delivered with charm, wit and captivating personal anecdotes, Kev brings Broome's past and present to life for all who embark upon one of his tours. And as a Broome local, his own story and appreciation for his surroundings adds a layer personal connection to every trip.
Having moved with his family at just three years of age, Kev grew up with Broome as his playground. "My early memories are filled with the vast, open spaces and the unique wildlife that surrounded us.
“I feel I belong here in Broome, having spent most of my life here.”
As a child, Kev was fascinated by the pearl luggers and the Japanese pearl divers who were a common sight around Streeter Jetty. "Pearling was the main industry of Broome," he explains. "We swam around the jetty, played on the mudflats, and dreamed of becoming pearl divers ourselves."
This dream stayed with Kev, who entered the industry as a pearl diver at the age of 20, a role he held for 14 exhilarating, but equally challenging, years.
"On the lugger, there was no toilet, no shower, no air conditioning, no TV, and no refrigeration," he recalls. "The trips lasted about 10 days, and the conditions were far from comfortable.
"I lost a few friends to carbon monoxide poisoning, oxygen toxicity, and some were lost at sea and never found," he remembers. "Many divers got the bends, caused by nitrogen bubbles in the blood, and had to undergo in-water recompression at night."
He was lucky to never experience the bends himself; but despite the heavy sacrifices, diving was an unshakable part of Broome culture that was far more to most than a way to make ends meet. "Diving for pearls was more than a job; it was a way to connect with the ocean and understand the town's deep-seated maritime traditions," says Kev.
Born for Adventure
Some who know Kev say he was born with adventure in his blood. His father, Paul Foulkes, was a man of many talents and passions. A concreter by trade and environmental activist in practice, Paul had a remarkable knack for producing botanical drawings.
During his years identifying the plants along the Dampier Peninsular with the West Australian herbarium, he made an astounding discovery.
"He discovered hundreds of dinosaur tracks in the area, some of which were so significant they named a dinosaur after him,” says Kev. “He really found the most significant place to find the largest range and amount dinosaur footprints in the world.”
Paul's discoveries highlighted the unique paleontological and ecological importance of Broome, and his efforts have left an indelible mark on the town. Along with the stretch of local reef and areas known for traditional Aboriginal food gathering, the dinosaur footprint site was one of several significant areas Paul fought to conserve.
"Seeing the areas my dad fought to protect still preserved today is incredibly gratifying," says Kev.
Reflecting on the changes in Broome over the years, Kev notes a transformation from a sleepy fishing village to a bustling town of
over 15,000 residents. "Broome was once a small town with a population of around 1,500," he recalls. "Now, it's much larger, but it's heartening to see that the natural areas we cherish remain untouched."
Though the town has naturally evolved since his time as a child, Kev is confident Broome's essence — the weather, culture, and community spirit — has remained intact. "The pearl history that started the town is slowly fading, but the town's unique character endures," he says.
Broome’s Quirky Tales & Wild Adventures
By harnessing his innate understanding of Broome, Kev’s tours — Broome’s Quirky Tales & Wild Adventures — become more than just sightseeing trips; they are immersive journeys into the fabric of the town.
Starting with a pick-up in his vehicle, Kev takes visitors to the lighthouse, where he shares fascinating tales of Broome's unique dinosaur tracks and his personal accounts of their discovery.
The tour continues with a walk to the Cedar Rica tracks at the lighthouse, followed by a drive to Entrance Point, cruising along the cliff top and beach.
Along the journey, Kev's stories bring the scenes of Broome to life. Ranging from pearl
diving adventures to close encounters with marine life, he shares insights and tales with a blend of humour and reverence for the town's history. "I talk about everything from jellyfish that put me in the hospital to a close encounter with an eight-foot tiger shark," Kev shares wryly; divulging details of being tangled in a fishing line and dragged by the shark for several minutes before breaking free.
“When I talk about my pearl diving experiences, a lot of people are very surprised at how such a little jellyfish can cause so much injury. One put me hospital for three days.”
An endless fountain of staggering stories, it’s this personal touch and wealth of firsthand experience that make Kev’s tours
truly unique.
As he continues to guide visitors through the wonders of Broome, his stories and insights ensure that the town's rich heritage is preserved and celebrated.
"I want visitors to walk away with a deep appreciation for Broome's history and natural beauty," he says. "My tours are about sharing my knowledge and experiences in a way that's engaging and memorable."
Kev’s advice for visitors to Broome is simple. "Take the time to explore and appreciate the unique history and natural wonders of this place. There's so much more to Broome than meets the eye."

A lucky break saw Allure’s William (Bill) Reed AM reshape the pearling industry in Broome.
A LegacyPearling
As a pearling pioneer, explorer and marine biologist, Allure South Sea Pearls co-founder William (Bill) Reed AM has dived pristine coastal waters and travelled to some of the world’s most remote locations in the pursuit of the perfect pearls.
After studying zoology and fisheries biology at university, young Bill sought a
Australia’s first cultured pearl farms at Kuri Bay, 370km North of Broome.
This new journey in Broome would see him build his reputation as one of the world’s most knowledgeable and successful pearl dealers, earning him the prestigious Order of Australia medal for his contributions to the pearling industry.
position that would allow him to pursue his passion for the sea. He would spend the next 20 years traversing the world and exploring the diverse seas of Papua New Guinea, Sudan, Nigeria and Tahiti.
In 1975 after selling his pearl farm and leaving the tropical shores of Tahiti, Bill returned to Australia and settled in beautiful Broome to work as a consultant for one of
Having amassed a wealth of knowledge and experience, Bill acquired a pearl farm situated in the pristine and unpolluted waters off the Kimberley coast. The conditions were ideal for the precious Pinctada maxima oyster to thrive and produce an abundance of large, lustrous pearls.
According to Bill, the success of Australian South Sea Pearls on the global market saw them recognised as ‘the finest and most prestigious pearls in the world’. As the desire and demand for these precious
gems grew, it was almost impossible to buy a local pearl in Broome.
In a twist of fate and a ‘very profitable accident’ as Bill recounts today, a broken leg saw him reshape the pearling industry in the historic town. Unable to work and travel to his pearl farm, wheel-chair bound Bill set-up shop in a rudimentary tin shed on Dampier Terrace. With no flooring, and a few cabinets directly positioned on the towns iconic red dirt, Bill had become an accidental shopkeeper and the first person to officially sell pearls in Broome. He offered genuine Australian South Sea Pearls to locals and tourists, and nothing short of a surprise, the new business venture was an immediate success.
This lucky “break” generated substantial regular income and cash flow that had
of South Sea pearls in his father’s jewellery workshop and revelled at the opportunity to work with these striking treasures again.
Demand continued to increase for their exquisite pearl jewellery and it seemed like the natural progression for Bill and Lindsay to recruit talented goldsmiths to establish an in-house workshop in their newly renovated showroom on Dampier Terrace. Far from its humble beginnings, Allure is proud to welcome visitors to Broome’s largest jewellery showroom in the heart of bustling Chinatown. Whilst some aspects within the pearling industry and the business have changed, others have remained the same.
After 30 years, their exquisite couture collection is still handcrafted by Allure’s team of master jewellers in the workshop above
their Dampier Terrace showroom.
Intricately crafted with 18-carat gold and only the finest quality South Sea pearls and diamonds, Allure’s designs continue to celebrate and pay homage to their hometown of Broome, their link to nature and the beautiful environment that surrounds them.
Every Allure jewellery piece brings out the singular beauty of each pearl, celebrating nature’s most magnificent treasures.
Discover Allure’s exquisite range of South Sea pearl and diamond jewellery in their Broome showrooms at 25 Dampier Terrace, Chinatown, and Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa, and also in their Perth showroom at 316 Rokeby Road, Subiaco.

previously only been a yearly payday after the harvest was sold. However, clients began to ask for pearl jewellery and this luxury was not yet on offer in Broome. Always the entrepreneur, Bill set out to find a talented jeweller to craft a selection of jewellery that would beautifully showcase his stunning pearls. By the late 1980’s the pearl store had flourished and Bill invited young Perth jeweller Lindsay Youd to join him in Broome to manage the growing business.

Watch whales, spot snubbies
Spot a snubbie or get up close with a breathtaking humpback whale with Broome Whale Watching.
For many years, the acrobatic displays of humpback whales and their incredible migration to the Kimberley had been kept a secret… until Broome Whale Watching was established in 2007.
For researchers and conservationists, Camden Sound Marine Park, located 400km north of Broome, has primarily been the leading regional focus — known as the ‘maternity ward’ or ‘humpback nursery’. From late June to early September, close to 30,000 whales embark on a long journey from Antarctica. Searching for warmer waters and an ideal place to mate, give birth and socialise, humpback whales spend their winter holidays in Broome each year.
In the early days, little information had been shared about the astonishing playful whales right on our state’s doorstep. Cameron Birch, owner and skipper of Broome Whale Watching, spent the last 20 years exploring WA’s coast. He was committed to sharing and developing this amazingly accessible marine experience with the community, building a new tourism industry in Broome.
Having worked in Coral Bay along the Ningaloo Reef in the early 2000s, Cameron encountered numerous whales. “I was keen
to investigate where these friendly giants were going next on their great journey,” says Cameron.
His curiosity coincided with the purchase of Sentosa Fishing Charters in 2007. With a fresh start in Broome, Cameron hit the ground running and discovered an incredible surprise — WA is home to the world’s largest group of humpback whales. It was time to introduce the Kimberley’s first whale watching vessel, Observer.
In 2008, Observer, a purpose-built whale watching vessel, was put to work offering whale watching and sunset experiences three times per week. Broome Whale Watching has evolved from this fast-paced adrenaline hit aboard, Observer, to a modern firstclass personalised service on the newly acquired Orcaella, a 50-foot catamaran. With breathtaking views from the top deck, guests are wowed in more ways than one. Whale watching and sunset cruises are now offered daily between the months of late June until early September. It’s no surprise that Broome Whale Watching has been voted the number one boat experience in Broome on TripAdvisor, for the past five years, a real highlight of any visit to the region.
Not only is Broome the destination for whale watching, it is also the home to our rare Australian snubfin dolphin. With his love for marine life, Cameron recognised some time ago, another unique opportunity to showcase the uniqueness of this amazing destination, Broome. The rare Australian snubfin dolphin is another hidden gem, found in Roebuck Bay.
“Only seen in the northern coasts of Australia, these strange looking dolphins with a melon shaped head form tight-knit social groups,” says Cameron. “They’re playful but at times shy and are a real favourite among our guests.”
“With its incredibly diverse ecosystem, Roebuck Bay is also a sanctuary for numerous marine life from bottlenose dolphins, turtles and dugongs to manta rays, sea snakes and juvenile leopard sharks,” explains Cameron. “It is a nature lover’s playground giving spectators opportunities to spot Broome’s spectacular wildlife.”
Recently, Broome Whale Watching introduced a new 42-foot vessel, Zenysis to its fleet; available for small group exclusive charters of up to 14 people, with catering options from canapes through to an exclusive onboard chef experience. Whether it is a day trip to Eco Beach, an afternoon sunset whale watch or an intimate private dinner cruise for small groups, Zenysis is an ideal choice for exclusive charter hire for any special occasion.
Providing wildlife interactions and unforgettable sunset cruises is just one
aspect of a Broome Whale Watching experience. “As an ecotourism company, we do our absolute best to educate guests about our environment, contribute to local conservation efforts and helping local communities,” says Cameron.
“Working closely with Animal Native Rescue: Broome has given our guests and staff an opportunity to aid in the rehabilitation of turtles and be involved in their subsequent release into the wild.”
Broome Whale Watching has developed a holistic approach to ecotourism in the region.
“We believe this approach will leave a positive lasting impression for future generations to safeguard the whales and dolphins and protect our backyard,” says Cameron. Book online at visitbroome.com.au/members/ broome-whale-watching-charters

Roger is guiding me around the Broome Peninsula on a Broome Trike Tour. He’s driving a Harley Davidson hybrid, customised to carry three passengers. The third wheel adds a degree of stability and safety to an electrifying mode of transport.
We exit the roundabout and turn onto Carnarvon Street. Roger shifts down a gear and accelerates out of the corner. To his amusement, I reach for one of three hand rails running along the edges of the trike’s cushioned rear end.
“See those,” Roger says.
“They’re nicknamed the ‘oh shit’ bars. Just quietly, these trikes do
awesome wheel stands too.”
The trikes are a novel and exhilarating way of experiencing Broome. There are no glass windows or steel separating the view from the outer surrounds, and the life and breath of Broome whistle in the wind.
Slowing up to enter a bustling Chinatown, Roger launches into a recital of old Broome’s colourful history. Roger is well-versed in the town’s historical and cultural knowledge, and sprinkles quirky anecdotes and jokes – some inappropriate for publication – amongst well researched fact.
“See that Thai restaurant there, that was once the biggest brothel in Broome,” he says.
“Still today, the ladies do a wonderful job of servicing their clientele . . . with delicious Thai food!”
An eccentric businessman, Roger relocated from Perth to Broome in 1999 following a failed ostrich farming venture. He drove a selfbuilt trike nearly 2,500km and after acquainting himself with the history of Broome, launched the first Trike Tour 23 years ago.
Since then, Broome Trike Tours have traversed over half a million kilometres. Maintaining the trikes is no easy feat, and Roger’s been through five engines, three gearboxes, and relicensed unapproved modification on a limo trike – an eight seat motor coach kitted with a jarrah bar, champagne cooler, and surround sound stereo system –which is now back on the road.
We breeze pass the old boat building sheds – a relic of past prosperity – and head around the corner, past the homesteads of the old white pearling masters; Broome’s only Aboriginal community; and the ancient shell middens on Kennedy Hill.
Roger effortlessly navigates around all the roundabouts. Riding motorcycles is second nature for Roger; he grew up on a property in Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island, and for as long as he can remember he’s been surrounded by motorcycles.
“I reckon I was conceived on a bike,” he says.
“I grew up on 10 acres; my dad had a bike and we used to rip around the 10 acres. I bought my first bike when I got my licence at 16, and I’ve had a bike ever since. I’ve had 20 bikes over the years and I’m now into my fourth trike.”
Two hours after we set out, Roger concludes the tour beneath a shady boab back from Gantheaume Beach. He wanders around to the back end of the trike, lifts up a lid, and pulls a mysterious box from the rear cavity. Inside the box are four bush tucker liqueurs. Each is made from a native tree – boab, white currant, gubinge, rosella – and distilled by Roger in his own backyard.
Aside from the Broome Peninsula Tour, Broome Trike Tours operate numerous other sightseeing tours. You can wine and dine at the croc park; learn about bush tucker from native trees; or take a sunset tour of Coconut Wells, and he guarantees me each tour is as eccentric and unpredictable as the next.

Haven Hello
Having
swapped the city scenes of Melbourne for the community spirit of Broome, café owners
Nick and Scott have swung open the doors to a bright new brunch
spot
— a Haven in every sense of the word
Light, bright, lofty and perched on a corner spot in the heart of bustling Chinatown, Haven is the latest brunch spot breathing new life into Broome with its uplifting aesthetic and welcoming feel.
Having left Broome several years ago to open a café in Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula, owners Nick and Scott were drawn back by the pull of Broome as their own magnetic haven. In October 2023, an opportunity presented itself, and they seized it, enamoured by the charming corner location that had the potential to become a beloved community hub.
"Broome is our ‘haven’," says Nick. "It’s a sanctuary, and we want to share it with everyone. We want our café to be a sanctuary
for many people — whether they be locals or visitors. It’s a place that makes you feel safe and comfortable."
An experienced chef of over 20 years, Scott had previously been head chef in other eateries here in Broome, developing a strong understanding of what makes a kitchen here run smoothly and keeps the clientele coming back.
“We feel that Haven brings a city-style brunch experience to Broome but doesn’t lose the Broome small town charm. We combine specialty coffee, with elevated brunch classics and friendly customer service,” says Scott and Nick.
“The vision for our menu is to re-create brunch classics with a twist. We like to do
things a little bit differently and take it up a notch.”
Some of the standout dishes that have quickly become customer favourites include the Corn Fritters, served with poached eggs, tomato and corn salsa, avocado, tacospiced hummus, and tomato jalapeno relish. Another popular choice is the Pulled Pork Eggs Benny, known for its generous portion size. And then there's the Haven Feast, their take on a Big Breakfast, offering a sampling of various delightful flavours, especially popular on Sunday mornings.
In addition to dine-in options, you can also pick up fresh grab-and-go bites to keep you going as you explore around town.
Having just opened its doors in April
THE ATMOSPHERE AT HAVEN IS METICULOUSLY CRAFTED TO BE BRIGHT, LIGHT, AND WELCOMING.
(2024), the menu is set to evolve with the seasons. Changes will be made as the wet season approaches and again in preparation for the dry season, ensuring that the offerings remain fresh and exciting.
As far as the coffee is concerned, it’s as fresh as it gets. Provided by Western Australian speciality roasters, Little Owl Coffee Roasters, Nick says the locals are big fans of the morning brew here. And when visitors catch wind it’s on par with the quality renowned of Melbourne, they’re straight there to sample it for themselves.
Melburnian-influence aside, Haven fits seamlessly into the cultural fabric of Broome, a town renowned for its melting pot of cultures. "Haven has created a new space for Broome residents to meet. We feel Haven contributes to bringing people together," says Nick.
The atmosphere at Haven is meticulously crafted to be bright, light, and welcoming. Predominantly white decor creates a calming and fresh space, a city-style café that retains Broome's unique charm. It’s a place where you can unwind, enjoy a delicious meal, and soak in the vibrant yet relaxed ambiance of Chinatown.
The best part for Nick and Scott? Living and working in Broome offers the perfect blend of work-life balance.
"It’s an amazing place to meet people from all around the world," says Nick. "Particularly our employees, who are a vibrant mix of locals and backpackers from many different countries.
“Broome provides the perfect place to live all round — winters are warm, and the summer months offer an amazing opportunity to unwind and enjoy the tropical weather."
Haven is not just a café; it is a community hub, a place where memories are made over great food and exceptional coffee. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Haven welcomes you with open arms, offering a sanctuary in the heart of Broome's vibrant Chinatown. Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere, and leave feeling like part of the family.

Having relocated to the hub of Cable Beach, The Wharf is just a 10-minute stroll from the beach, so you can smell the ocean air as you dine on the best it can provide. Local wild caught barramundi and threadfin salmon are available simply grilled to perfection or in a classic, deliciously crispy fish and chips, or perhaps you'd prefer a fantastic feast of Kimberley mud crab.
At the new venue you can enjoy the cool, air-conditioned interior seating, surrounded by lush indoor plants. Or take in the fresh air on the outside deck, spacious and shaded with a cool breeze blowing though.
Sit back and peruse the well-thought-out wine list, carefully chosen to pair well with seafood.
The modern bar with specialist spirits and house crafted cocktails add to the ambience and complement their Japanese inspired daily specials – including their delicious sashimi that is fresh and delicate.
Chef Hau Duong has 20 years’ experience in hospitality. Prior to joining The Wharf, where he has been the chef for eight years, he was on the team of the Italian restaurant in The Reverie Hotel, a highly esteemed luxury 5-star hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.
He recommends you try the grilled barramundi with the chilli sambal soy sauce.
“The dish looks simple but includes everything from the fresh local fish to the very famous but unique sambal soy sauce, and it all just comes together perfectly,” he says.
This ethos complements the restaurant motto perfectly, being The Way Seafood Should be, Fresh, Local, Simple’.
For something unique to The Wharf, we recommend you also try their famous barramundi wings or a whole crispy reef fish, which are both delicious.
And you can’t go wrong with the fresh oysters, which are prepared five different ways – natural served with lemon wedges; wakame seaweed with a zesty soy; Kilpatrick with finely chopped crispy bacon; Japanese panko oysters with a delicious wasabi mayo; and unique to The Wharf is their ginger soy shallot sauce. Try them all to find your favourite.
Make sure you’re there in the afternoon to make the most of the daily happy hour from 2pm to 5pm, where oysters are half price.

Brilliant Birds
The Broome Bird Observatory provides the perfect opportunity to watch and enjoy some of the most spectacular birdspotting in Australia.
Emerging from the pindan woodland and leaning over Roebuck Bay, the Broome Observatory’s viewing platform is a window onto our vast tides. When they are low, tens of thousands of shorebirds spread across the flats, feeding on rich mud. As the turquoise water advances, the birds inch closer, and once all the mud is covered, the beaches along our shores are teeming. This is the best time to watch, carefully, some 35 species of shorebird at remarkably close quarters, all waiting for the tide to expose their feeding grounds again.
This ritual is a wildlife spectacle in its own right, but the annual movements of most shorebirds really set them apart. It’s a long way to Broome from Siberia. Nevertheless, migrating adults of many species make this round trip every year. In March and April, you can watch from the red cliffs as V-shaped flocks depart to breed. They return gradually later in the year. Their offspring, just a few months old, arrive miraculously weeks afterwards. After this incredible journey, young birds wait a full year or two before
crossing the equator again, and these are the 20,000 shorebirds you can see all through the Broome dry season. Once the breeding adults have returned, the number swells closer to 120,000. Roebuck Bay provides a beautiful backdrop for viewing these iconic birds all year round.
In other corners of the bay, mangroves shelter brilliant red fiddler crabs, squabbling mudskippers and a suite of specialised songbirds. The saltmarsh behind is home to the enigmatic yellow chat, a bright gem of a bird seen bouncing through the samphire in small flocks. Just inland are the wide open grasslands of Roebuck Plains.
The Broome Bird Observatory is nestled in pindan at the meeting of these worlds. From February through November, we welcome visitors to a quiet, tropical bush camp away from busy Broome. Around the grounds are woodland trails and the famous Shadehouse: a well-equipped kitchen overlooking the bush birds and wallabies drawn to our birdbaths.
The observatory is also a base, for research and education activities focused on the bay, and for visitors to explore the surrounding mosaic of habitats.
Here are some highlights to look for through the year:
February
The bush is alive with wet season activity. Migratory shorebirds begin to moult into their vibrant breeding plumage: in some this is a startling transition from stony grey to pindan red! Grasslands flood and fill with waterbirds.
March-April
Shorebirds leave on their amazing migrations. All through April, chattering V-shaped flocks lift from the mud and pass low over the observatory. Some won’t touch the ground again until they reach northern China. Look out for our Migration Watch barbecue.
May-July
Refreshing cool mornings and warm, dry days make a pleasant time to visit. The plains become accessible as they dry, and wildlife throngs around wetland oases. Younger shorebirds stay in the bay, biding their time until next year’s migration.
August-September
We start to welcome older shorebirds back from their breeding seasons in Siberia. Inland wetlands start to dry, revealing muddy margins that are a magnet for birds. The weather is ideal for exploring mangroves and woodlands on foot.
October-November
There are now 120,000 shorebirds in the bay. Humidity builds up with the coming wet season, and other migrants are drawn by the abundance of the wet. Access to the plains is usually still possible, making an excellent time to watch birds around Broome.
The Broome Bird Observatory is a not-forprofit organisation and entirely self-funded.

on an experience to remember as you sail the seas, and absorb the history of Broome, with Willie Cruises.
Willie Cruises offers a a little peak into the legends of the past, as it takes passengers on a journey sailing the blue waters of Broome in Australia’s North West.
‘Willie’, is one of the last operating pearl luggers in Australia, often photographed against the backdrop of the iconic Broome sunset silhouette.
This 1967 Gaff Rig Schooner, modelled on the designs of early 1900 pearl luggers, was built to fish for mother of pearl shell Pinctada maxima, and put Broome on the map shaping the history of the region. ‘Willie’ poised on the horizon is synonymous with the days of old.
In her time, ‘Willie’ has been chartered to search for ship wreckages, collect mother of pearl shells and was even used by the National Geographic team for its coverage of northern WA in 1989.
From 2004, ‘Willie’ began hosting sunset
charter trips along the waters of Cable Beach, which is where she began her long industrious career as a sunset cruiser. After a few years spent adventuring abroad in South East Asia, now with her new owners and a refreshed look reinstating her former glory, ‘Willie’ returned to Broome in 2019 with her sights set for the calm waters of Cable Beach and Roebuck Bay.
Sailing daily between Roebuck Bay and the idyllic Cable Beach, ‘Willie’ allows its patrons to experience how a traditional gaff rigged sailing vessel operates, with all sails heaved up manually, just as our forefathers did.
Whilst this is taking place, patrons can take in the beautiful sunset and nestle into the comfortable seating options aboard. With an experienced and friendly crew onboard, patrons can completely relax and hear stories of the rich history and culture of the area. Enjoy complimentary canapés served

Experience a natural phenomenon that will take your breath away before indulging in a luxury houseboat stay.
There’s something magical about flying over the Kimberley coast. The colours are simply dazzling as they morph from sandy white beaches being kissed by an aquamarine ocean, to the deep, leafy greens of forested land, slashed by ochre roads. Soaring over the Buccaneer Archipelago, tiny islands punctuate the multi-hued ocean and mangroves seem to drift on the waves, they stand so distant from the shore. Blink and the scene changes in a slideshow of natural splendour. This is what you will experience when embarking on a journey with Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures.
A frisson of excitement surges through the eight passengers as the seaplane approaches Talbot Bay, flying over rippled land that looks as if it’s been lifted from The Lord of the Rings. It feels like we are among a lucky few, as we glide across these remote lands. The Traditional Owners, the Dambimangari peoples, believe much of Dambimangari Country was created by the writhing actions of a female Woongudd Snake. The undulations in the landscape bear witness to this creation story.
And then we’re there, circling over the Horizontal Falls, whirlpools of white, swirling water clear evidence of the power of the tide as it squeezes through the two gaps in the ridges of the McLarty Range like air
Beyond Breathtaking
whooshing to freedom from the neck of a balloon. Sir David Attenborough wasn’t wrong when he described this as one of the world's great natural wonders.
This isn’t the end of the journey, though. On an overnight package with Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures, the aerial view of the falls is just the start.
The seaplane glides across the surface of the water, pulling up at the main pontoon, which sits in the middle of Talbot Bay.
Framed by a rocky escarpment with a mantel of greenery that tumbles to the water’s edge, it’s a rather spectacular place to land. Greeted with smiles we disembark, our excitement at an all-time high.
The rest of the day is packed with adventure, whether it’s taking a powerboat tour of the Falls; cruising down Cyclone Creek, watching for crocodiles lurking in the mangrove fringe; fishing for dinner; or taking a dip in the pool at the marine viewing platform,
sociable tawny nurse sharks gliding passively close on the other side.
As the day sinks towards the horizon, dinner is served. Staying on the main pontoon, there’s an al-fresco barbecue on the outdoor deck with local barramundi as the star. On Jetwave Pearl, the luxury overnight houseboat, it’s a more refined affair, with a private chef dishing up a three-course menu to delight even the most refined palate.
Lulled to sleep in the private airconditioned cabin, morning creeps in like a watercolour painting, gentle pinks and soft blues heralding dawn. By the time breakfast is done, the cliffs have turned ochre, glowing in the burgeoning sunlight, providing a final spectacle as a Kimberley-style farewell.
Then it’s one last flight, taking you over and above; one final opportunity to witness the untouched beauty of this part of the country; one last moment to sear this moment into your memory.
This is what overnight at Horizontal Falls is all about — sheer wonder.

In memory of the legend Malcolm Douglas, his aweinspiring crocodile park lives on sharing captivating experiences.
In 1964, 23-year-old Malcolm Douglas and his friend David Oldmeadow left their jobs as stock and station agents in New South Wales and set off on a six-month journey around Australia. Before they knew it, six months had escalated to four years and left quite the impression on Malcolm, shaping his future to come.
Along their journey, the duo filmed their outback adventures, which was later used to produce their inspiring documentary, Across the Top, reaching record-breaking ratings for Australian television. Timeless DESIGNS
Lush Designs has blossomed from a small market stall back in 2006, to an iconic jewellery designer producing precious, timeless pieces.
Originally a veterinarian, Julie Nicholas arrived in Broome in 2000, in search of something spectacular.
Julie fell in love with the stunning Kimberley landscape and spent her first year on the ocean exploring the Kimberley and its northern coastline. It was spending time appreciating the ocean that brought on her fascination and admiration for its precious, natural gemstone, the saltwater pearl.
Delving into the world of jewellery design,
Julie quickly progressed from showcasing her pieces at a small table at the Broome. Courthouse in 2006 to annually attracting a flock of tourists to view the new designs for the year at her established business, Lush Designs.
Julie focuses on designing timeless jewellery pieces with modern bohemian inspiration, sourcing pearls and gemstones from around the world. Larimar and pearls have been used extensively in this year’s designs reflecting the stunning blue ocean colours and white sand of Broome.
Lush Designs’ first flagship boutique is open seven days a week right in the heart of Chinatown, next door to the original Sun Pictures. There is also a second larger boutique now open in the heart of Cottesloe on Napoleon Street. Both stores are definitely worth a visit and will not disappoint.

Camel Magic
Unforgettable Rides on Cable Beach
Camel riding along Cable Beach is an iconic Broome experience for good reason. Find out for yourself when you book Broome Camel Safaris.
Riding a camel along Cable Beach is something that should be on everybody’s bucket list,” says Alison Bird, one of Broome’s most respected camel handlers.
“There’s something special about camels. Their personalities seem distinct, wise, playful and engaging.”
Alison first encountered these fascinating creatures while working on a cattle station in the East Pilbara. “The station next door accidentally mustered a camel with the cattle,” says Alison.
“I went to have a look at him and it was love at first sight. I had my hands on the railings of the yard when the camel came over and gently nibbled my fingers.
“I bought him and slowly got to know him and train him, all by trial and error.”
It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair between Alison and these magnificent animals.
After arriving in Broome, in 1994 with just three camels Alison started Broome Camel Safaris.
She has slowly grown her herd, collecting and training camels that were rejects, orphaned, unwanted or mishandled, which now happily carry her customers on Cable Beach.
As they watch the stunning colours of the setting sun, the shadows from the camels create a masterpiece on the sand. It’s the kind of magic that causes thousands of photos to be taken and many Instagram accounts updated – this is one of those moments that will never be forgotten.

Pigram Productions breeds creativity among local youth under the helm of artistic director and Yaruwu woman, Naomi Pigram-Mitchell.
By TORI WILSON
For the Pigram family, music is in their DNA. Born and raised in Broome, national musical icons the Pigram Brothers make up seven of the talented 12 Pigram siblings, three of whom feature in the Western Australian Music Hall of Fame. With music in their blood from both sides of the family — ranging from country singing bands to classical piano — the family name has become synonymous with the town’s artistic heartbeat.
So, for the Pigram Brother Stephen Pigram's daughter Naomi Pigram-Mitchell, a talented singer and songwriter in her own right, nurturing artistic talent within others was a natural progression. This year, in 2024, Naomi founded the creative production company Pigram Productions with the vision to support the next generation of artistic talent within Broome. She has plenty on the horizon for both visitors and locals alike to look out for.
“I want to support, nurture, and develop another generation of local performing artists who represent the rich, multicultural, musical heritage that belongs to Broome,” says Naomi. “It is a distinct sound that can be heard in the backyards of many local families. Families that have been here for many generations.”
Naomi's first professional foray into the arts kicked off at the age of 17, imparting invaluable lessons and opening her eyes to the challenges of the industry. “My performing arts journey commenced at 17, debuting in Jimmy Chi’s acclaimed musical ‘Corrugation Road,’ on a national tour from 1996 to 1998,” says Naomi.
“Being the youngest in the cast with limited professional experience, I realised the absence of support for creatives plucked straight from the regional and remote areas of the country being launched onto the national stage.”
Further on in her career, in 2019, Naomi co-directed the revival of Jimmy Chi’s hit musical ‘Bran Nue Dae,’ employing local talent and bringing the vibrant sounds of Broome to audiences in Parramatta and Perth. Although the production was sadly cut short by COVID-19, it reinforced Naomi’s commitment to fostering young, regional creatives and providing a supportive platform for their growth.
Born to Perform
Since then, Pigram Productions has facilitated numerous opportunities for local talent, including helping rapper Jacob Gregory perform in Djarrinjin and Broome, and supporting songwriters such as Damar Kentjana and Luke Puertollano, leading to their debut at the ‘Taste of Broome Soirée.’
Naomi’s own children, Taj Pigram and Tehya Makani, are also among the next generation of performers managed by Pigram Productions, currently on national tours with Ilbijerri Theatre and Wesley Enoch's ‘The Sunshine Club,’ respectively. Proud of their success on the national stage, Naomi says it’s her aim to show the same guidance to all artists engaged by Pigram Productions, ensuring they reach their full potential.
Meanwhile, under Pigram Productions, Naomi herself has big things underway in collaboration with the Black Swan State Theatre and Goolari Media. This project, slated to showcase in Broome soon, will feature a mix of emerging and established local creatives. “Last year I was brought on board by The Black Swan State Theatre as an Associate Artist and have been working on a new piece of work which is reflective of a Broome kid who grew up in my time,” says Naomi.
“The show will be somewhat reflective of what it was like to grow up in the 80s when original music, theatre, and tourism were in full bloom — how these things provided a sense of pride for the local kid and how we
all identified as Broome people.” The show will be a part of A Taste of Broome this year, with plans to bring it to Perth in 2025.
For Naomi, many lessons learned as a child can be attributed to her greatest influence, her grandmother Agnes Pigram, a constant source of inspiration for her creative endeavours.
“This incredible woman taught me what it felt like to be loved and made my childhood in Broome exactly what it should feel like,” says Naomi. “I remember her reef walking, lifting (catching) fish one after the other, and the smell of her cooking could fill your belly before it even passed your lips. As I got older, the lessons she taught will forever live on. If I am one day half the woman she was, I will be a happy one.”
Incredibly talented creatives, the Pigram family’s musical prowess knows no bounds. While the Pigram Brothers are no longer actively touring, Stephen Pigram, Naomi’s father, continues his solo music career with Pigram Productions’ support. The company recently promoted his upcoming show, keeping the Pigram musical legacy alive and thriving.
Naomi invites visitors to experience the spirit of Broome through innovative productions showcased through Pigram Productions. While Pigram Productions' website is currently under construction, you can follow their journey on Instagram and Facebook @pigramproductions to discover updates and upcoming events.

Festival of the Pearl
Broome comes alive with a burst of culture and creativity during Shinju Matsuri.
Shinju Matsuri, the Festival of the Pearl, celebrates the diverse culture, history and natural beauty of Broome, with a variety of events that captivate the senses — sight, sound and, most of all, taste.
The longest running festival in regional WA, Shinju Matsuri, is the highlight of the end of the busy dry season in Broome. What started as a week-long festival, organised by a group of spirited locals back in 1970, is now a jam packed 16-day event program, attracting visitors to the Kimberley from all over Australia and the world.
Taking influence from Chinese, Japanese, Malay and Indigenous cultures, the festival pays tribute to the early pearling days of Broome and is a reminder of the rich and fascinating history of the region. Every year the program celebrates this heritage via a series of unique events, from gourmet dining experiences, cultural tours, art exhibitions and a variety of performances by local and touring performers.
The highly anticipated Sunset Long Table Dinner on stunning Cable Beach, is the most renowned event on the program. The event is a sell out every year, with foodies from all over rushing to secure a coveted spot at one of Australia’s most exclusive dining tables.
Those lucky enough to score a seat at the table are treated to an indulgent menu, curated by some of Australia’s biggest names in the food industry. This year’s celebrity chef is Khanh Ong who will curate and deliver this year’s menu alongside Spinifex Brewery Cable Beach.
An exciting new event has been added to this year's program with the introduction of the Matso’s Broome Brewery Sunset Cocktail Party on spectacular Cable Beach. Guests will enjoy a delicious canape menu designed by the talented chefs at Cable Beach House and celebrity chef Khanh Ong. Dance the night away to some incredible DJ’s watching the sun go down!
Other premium experiences include popular dining events the Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures Chinatown Feast, as well as the Horizon Power Floating Lantern Matsuri with the Spinifex Brewery Cable Beach Floating Lantern Hub, a cultural experience with dining elements on Gantheaume Point.
Community events that showcase and celebrate the diverse cultural tapestry of the Broome community are always a hit with attendees of all ages. Highlights of the community program include, the Roebuck Bay Hotel Float Parade and HitWA Carnival of Nations, which take over the heart of Chinatown with a colourful celebration, put together by local performance groups, schools, businesses and community groups.
Shinju Matsuri dates vary each year depending on tidal movement and moonrise. The 2024 festival will take place from Saturday 17th August – Sunday 1st September Visit shinjumatsuri.com.au

Enjoy it all at the Plaza
During the 1880’s, at the onset of the pearling industry, Chinatown was a bustle of activity, with its opium and gambling dens and corrugated iron sheds tacked together to house pearling crews and noodle kitchens. Chinatown became a multicultural melting pot and this spirit still continues today, with its unique architecture providing a glimpse of days gone by.
Today, Paspaley Plaza is your one-stop shopping destination, and is home to Coles, Best & Less and Australia Post, plus more than 25 specialty stores on site.
For those interested in Broome’s unique pearling history, the outdoor Colonnade displays a pearling timeline, showing the journey of the Paspaley Pearling Co. from 1935 through to today. Paspaley Pearling Co. are pioneers of the South Sea Pearling Industry, and the pearls they produce here in Broome are known as the world’s very best.
Just as Chinatown was full of noodle houses in its early establishment, today the Plaza embodies this culture hosting a
vast array of different eateries from diverse backgrounds — with Haven Broome a bustle from early in the morning with Broome's best coffee and brunch all day, and with establishments such as Ginreab Thai, DMK The Kitchen (Indonesian), Sweets & Koh (Singapore), Subway & Land of Pharaohs (Egyptian/Kebabs) offering meals through to late at night. Several eateries offer healthy beverage options such as Bubble Cat (Bubble Tea) and Fresco Hut (Juice Bar) with other eateries offering alcoholic drinks with meals.
Chinatown Pharmacy, 888 Supplements, Vinh’s Nails and Spa, Broome Laser Clinic, The Barber of Broome and Broome Thyme health all offer fantastic health, wellness and beauty services.
If you are looking for fashion, you’ll find unique home grown labels, such as Pops Plus Co — a beautiful boutique retail outlet offering unique designer labels, along with Ripcurl, Clifton Collective and Australian Red Cross also offering a range of ladies', men’s and children’s fashion. These are great stores
Paspaley Plaza is your premium precinct to discover diverse eateries, fantastic fashion, wellness hubs and more.
to visit if you are looking for gifts, as are Chinatown Newsagency, and Three Angels Broome — another home-grown label who hand make their own candles right here in Broome.
Technology gurus can be found at Entertainment Konnections, located in the air-conditioned Atrium, where you can have a coffee at the indoor food court.

One of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the world. Cable Beach takes its name from the cable which linked Broome with what is present day Indonesia. Stingers may be present during the months from November to May. Always check by asking the Broome Visitor Centre before swimming.
Broome owes its early beginnings to the discovery in 1861 of the giant pearl oyster Pinctada Maxima which led to the establishment of Broome’s pearling industry.
