National Park
KALBARRI NATIONAL PARK COVERS AN AREA OF 186,000 HECTARES, THE RUGGED TERRAIN AND RELATIVE SECLUSION OF THE PARK ATTRACTS THOUSANDS OF VISITORS EACH YEAR.
THE EXPERIENCED HIKER to the simple holiday maker are catered for with access to 14 different sites throughout the area. The township of Kalbarri is encircled by two distinctly different landscapes. East of town are inland river gorges with rock formations as old as 400 million years while the south features towering ocean cliffs plummeting to the waves below. The roads to the coastal sites are sealed and suitable for all vehicles, except for Pot Alley which is not suitable for caravans or motorhomes. The roads into the inland gorge sites at Hawks Head and Ross Graham are also sealed, and there are shade shelters, toilets and picnic facilities.
The first 12km of the road to the Z-Bend and Loop area is sealed with the remaining 19km unsealed, accessible to most traffic including twowheel drives. Motorhomes, large campervans or any vehicle towing are not recommended into this site. We recommend that you check with the visitor centre for current road conditions as heavy rainfall can close this road.
This limestone capped peak is visible from several different locations around Kalbarri. Take the short walk to learn how this area was once part of an ancient coral reef system. At 207m above sea level this is the perfect vantage point for 360° views of Kalbarri and the Murchison River flowing into the Indian Ocean.
THE MURCHISON RIVER The mighty Murchison River starts its journey in the range lands near Meekatharra, travelling across dry plains, hills, salt lakes and gorges with many tributaries forming this massive catchment area. Cyclonic activity in the north of the state drops heavy rain into the catchment area, resulting in floodwaters reaching Kalbarri up to three weeks later. In extreme flood events, muddy brown water can be seen emptying into the ocean creating a stark contrast between blue water and brown. Predatory fish lie in wait for the river inhabitants to be flushed out for a feast. These floodwaters carry an amazing array of nutrients that nourishes and restores the river system; within a month the river is teeming with life again.

VISITOR GUIDE
If time permits, continue on to the Birgurda Trail.
ISLAND ROCK The resilient Island Rock was once part of the shoreline but now stands sentry as a solitary sea stack against the never-ending pounding ocean waves. Viewing platforms are a short distance from the car park, providing spectacular views of this geological oddity.
SHELLHOUSE GRANDSTAND Fishermen at sea thought they could see a shell-shaped house on the side of the cliff, hence the odd name. The terraced rock face is best viewed at sunset when glowing light against the sandstone cliff is especially spectacular.
BIGURDA TRAIL
Class 3, 8km one-way (16km return)
Bigurda is Nanda for a small kangaroo, also known as the euro.
Connecting Eagle Gorge to Natural Bridge, this sandy trail provides stunning coastal views with great photo opportunities. From winter through to the end of spring, walkers will see a vast array of wildflower species. Dolphin pods are a common sight too, as well as humpback whales. Some parts of the trail have uneven surfaces with loose stones; it hugs the coastline and is close to the clifftop so watch your step.
EAGLE GORGE As you take in views from the Eagle Gorge lookout, watch for passing seasonal whales and circling seabirds while you listen to the eternal pounding of the waves below. For anyone seeking a little extra challenge, take the stepped rocky path to discover a secluded beach – it’s well worth the effort.
POT ALLEY Pot Alley was named by local cray fishermen after losing many pots to this hazardous cove. The view south from the cliff top truly captures the rugged beauty of this coastline. Take the winding, rocky walk down to the beautiful beach. Great to explore, however swimming is not recommended, the life buoy revealing the danger of this coastline.
MUSHROOM ROCK AND RAINBOW VALLEY NATURE TRAIL Class 3, 3km loop
This loop connects Mushroom Rock to Rainbow Valley and takes you on a contrasting journey of discovery. Informative signage along the path will take you back 400 million years to a time when Australia was known as Gondwanaland and marine life ruled the planet. See a range of rock formations from worm tubes to round boulders and banded colours of sandstone layers. At dawn or dusk you’ll see kangaroos feeding amongst the coastal heath and rocky outcrops while the ocean is never far from sight.
RED BLUFF LOOKOUT Class 1, 1km return
Interpretive signage located along this path, reveals the intriguing history of the area. Red Bluff has the highest elevation in the area with 100m of soaring cliff face. From Pederick lookout, see sandy beaches below and the striking Zuytdorp Cliffs to the north.
CAUTION Stay clear of cliff edges and overhangs. Keep to paths and lookouts where provided. Beware of slippery rocks and big seas with massive wave surges
RED BLUFF TO BEACH TRAIL (GABA GABA YINA) Class 3, 1.4km return
Hike down from Pederick lookout to Red Bluff beach, see amazing views across the Indian Ocean, impressive rock formations and reward yourself with a swim at the bottom. This track is steep with loose surfaces. 2017 |

BACK BEACH
WITTECARRA BEACH
A beautifully maintained foreshore with shady trees, shelter huts and playgrounds with barbecues, the river foreshore is an ideal location to spend the day or have a picnic with the family and relax. There’s plenty of room for a family cricket match, to kick the footy or just sit back and watch the boats navigating in and out of the channel with the catch of the day.
A 10-minute walk from town, Back Beach is a great place for exploring rock pools at low tide. Trails from this area lead to Chinaman’s Point and the Zuytdorp memorial lookout.
This stretch of beach from Wittecarra south to Red Bluff is a popular choice for beach fisherman with 4WD access.
CHINAMAN’S BEACH Where the river meets the sea, Chinaman’s is an ideal place to swim in the calm sheltered water – as a result, it’s a great spot for kids. BLUE HOLES Blue Holes is part of an inshore limestone reef system, with some sections permanently submerged and others exposed, giving the ‘Blue Holes’ stretch of coast its name. Declared as a Fish Habitat Protection Area (FHPA) in 2007, it’s home to more than 70 species of finfish. Some fish to look out for include dart, moon wrasse, raccoon butterfly fish, humbugs and western rock lobster. There are as many as 10 types of sponge, 11 species of coral, crustaceans such as banded hair shrimp and beds of oysters. Blue Holes offers a range of recreational activities including swimming, snorkelling and beach-combing. Some points to remember: • All marine life is protected and no fishing activities are permitted; also no shells are to be taken off the beach. • Recreational boating and the use of jetskis in the FHPA is prohibited.
Whether it’s catching a glimpse of some of the world’s largest creatures, sailing at sunset or doing a 360 at the local skate park, Kalbarri’s got it all. WHALE OF A TIME
POD CAST
Approximately 22,000 of the world’s humpback whale population pass the Kalbarri coastline line between June and November on their annual migration journey. The humpback whale undertakes a northern journey from May to August, from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to breeding grounds as far as Camden Sound off the Kimberley coast. They return the following year to give birth in the same waters, then travel south from August to November close to Kalbarri’s shoreline, sheltering their young. At birth, calves are approximately four to five metres in length and weigh approximately two tonnes. Mothers produce nearly 240 litres of milk for their calves each day. Best viewing points are often at higher coastal lookouts such as Natural Bridge, Eagle Gorge and Red Bluff.
You’ll see two types of dolphins in Kalbarri’s waters - the common dolphin are usually seen from cliff tops and close to shore, and their yellowish pattern on their sides make them easy to identify. Bottlenose dolphins are also plentiful, and can be seen frequently while fishing or boating offshore. They have a short rounded snout (typically described as bottleshaped).
FAST FACT Dolphins can live up to 45 years.
BOARD MEETING If you’ve got a skater kid in tow, head over to the Kalbarri Skate Park. It’s a community initiative and classed as a competition-standard park. The bowl is the second biggest in WA with landscaping and shade shelters so everybody can enjoy watching the aerodynamics. Remember, for safety’s sake wear protective gear at the park and keep an eye on your children at all times.
PELICAN BRIEF Did you know pelicans are recorded as having the longest bill of any living bird? Why not join the volunteers each morning at 8.45am to feed these beautiful waterbirds a tasty selection of fish?
SURF’S UP One of the state’s most famous remote surfing breaks, Jakes Point, is on most serious surfers’ bucket lists - and it’s right here in Kalbarri. The iconic lefthander is a National Surfing
Reserve and is one of those unique waves that is mastered best by the local surfers. Like most reefs, Jakes breaks from two feet and up and is recommended for experienced surfers only. Meanwhile, Jakes Bay offers a safer option for the novice providing the perfect safe training ground for the next generation of talent. Kalbarri has a very strong surfing community where locals take their surfing and the protection of the environment seriously.
CAST AWAY Kalbarri’s coastline is a paradise for fishing enthusiasts, and the pursuit can be enjoyed year round with a large variety of fish on offer. Just make sure you familiarise yourself with fishing regulations and size guidelines before setting off after the big one. Two boat ramps at either end of town provide ample access for boats to launch. Navigation through the channel can be dangerous so boaties are advised to check local conditions before heading out to sea. • Please note, an eight-knot speed limit applies in the Murchison River • Always log on to Kalbarri VMR673, via VHF channel 80 or 27.91MHz • Check weather reports with Kalbarri VMR on 9937 2112 • Further information is available at kalbarrisearescue.com 2017 |

It was one of the first to be built in WA over 150 years ago after lead was discovered by Augustus Gregory while he was exploring the area for pastoral development. The site still retains solid stonework and foundations from its working days. Nowadays it’s adorned with wildflowers when in season and is a great spot to visit if you have enough time. VISITOR GUIDE
Approximately 60km offshore from Kalbarri, the Abrolhos is a chain of 122 islands and associated coral reefs. It is the southernmost true coral reef in the Indian Ocean and one of the highest latitude reef systems in the world. It’s also home to one of the world’s most important seabird breeding sites and is the centre of Western Australia’s largest single species fishery, the western rock lobster. The islands have a small seasonal population of fishermen and a limited number of tourists are permitted for day trips, but most of the land area is off limits as a conservation habitat. Flights are available to land and explore the island of East Wallabi from Kalbarri.
PORT GREGORY The town of Gregory lies south of Kalbarri near the mouth of Hutt River. This picturesque fishing village is encircled by five kilometres of exposed reef, originally established to serve the Geraldine Lead Mine and whalers. However, it soon became clear that it was not suitable for large vessels. Rich in history, Port Gregory was once bombarded by a submarine during WWII. Further down the road is Lynton Station, home to the Governor’s mansion and stone convict ruins which are currently under restoration.
HORROCKS Named after a convict who was transported to Western Australia in 1851 for forging and uttering (the use of a forged document), this small coastal town site is a scenic holiday spot. South of Horrocks lies the Bowes River, with good shore fishing and surfing at the river’s mouth.
PRINCIPALITY OF HUTT RIVER Comparable to the size of Hong Kong, this independent sovereign state seceded from Australia on April 21 1970. The province is open for visitors between 9am and 4pm daily. Prince Leonard’s principality has been developed with tourists in mind and the administration building contains a government office, post office and a charming interdenominational chapel. You may have your passport stamped here and visas are available at the Kalbarri Visitor Centre.
NORTHAMPTON Northampton is one of the oldest settlements in Western Australia, having been declared a town site in 1864. Classified as a historical town by the National Trust of Australia in 1993. Pop into the visitor centre to grab a copy of the Hampton Rd heritage walk which includes some of the town most historical buildings and history.
PINK LAKE Hutt Lagoon was given its colourful name by explorer George Grey who camped on its edge in 1839. The pink hue is due to the presence of the carotenoid-producing algae, dunaliella salina, a source of beta-carotene, a food-colouring agent and source of vitamin A. The lagoon contains the world’s largest microalgae production plant and a commercial supply of artemia parthenogenetica (brine shrimp). Artemia is a speciality feed used by prawn and fish farmers as well as the aquarium fish trade.

Ancient land, rich culture
DISCOVERING DREAMTIME
A
boriginal people known as the Nanda inhabited an area including Kalbarri, west to Willigulli and the mouth of the Bowes River, east to Northampton and north to Tamala. Traditionally Nanda are the salt water people, the keepers of land and sea and they have a spiritual connection to the land and Mother Earth. They believe a mythological being sculptured the land to what we see today. The story goes that long ago, during the spiritual Dreamtime, a serpent called Beemarra travelled down the Murchison River, drawn by the unfamiliar sound of the pounding waves. Beemarra followed a creek and then disappeared underground to tunnel her way to the coast. Emerging at Kalbarri’s coastal cliffs, Beemarra was terrified by the thundering waves and fled back to the safety of the Murchison River. As she fled, her passage was marked by a tunnel through an outcrop of red sandstone. She rested in many places leaving fresh water wherever she had lain. These fresh water springs are still in existence today and are registered sites with the Department of Indigenous Affairs. 209 Aboriginal heritage sites are also registered in this area.
TREASURE SHIPS IT’S NO SURPRISE that the remote and windswept coastline of Kalbarri has been the tragic setting of many shipwrecks over time. One of the most famous of these was the Batavia from the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Built in Amsterdam in 1628 and armed with 24 cast-iron cannons, it was shipwrecked on June 4 of the following year. She struck Morning Reef, part of the Abrolhos Islands group on her maiden voyage. The event went down in infamy thanks to the mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. Commander Pelsaert left survivors on the island to make the miraculous journey to Java in a tiny long boat for help. The crew plotted mutiny while Wiebbe Hayes and his followers held the mutineers at bay until Pelsaert returned. Some of the mutineers were sentenced to death, some taken home for sentencing and two cast ashore at Kalbarri, believed to be at the site of Wittecarra Creek.

In 1712, the Zuytdorp, also a VOC Company vessel, was wrecked against limestone cliffs between Kalbarri and Steep Point, while sailing to Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia). It carried a rich cargo of 248,000 freshly minted silver coins along with 200 passengers. Hundreds of coins have been recovered from the famous ‘carpet of silver’ in and around the wreck. The precise circumstances of the wreck remain a mystery, because no survivors reached Batavia to tell the tale. Some did live for a time in Shark Bay, where they were helped by local Aboriginal people.
GONE FISHING Commercial fishing boats have more than halved in recent years due to fishing regulations and a change in climate. WA has outstanding fish management systems in place to ensure fisheries are sustainable. Fresh lobster catches are unloaded directly from the vessel and transported to Geraldton for processing and are not available for sale from the boats. Fresh fish and lobster is featured on the local menus and can be purchased from a few outlets in town. Fresh fish can be purchased directly from the boats at the wharf when available. 2017 |

found here in Kalbarri. Make your way inland and the sand plains become carpets of pink and white everlastings and orange immortelles, jostling for space between starflowers, kangaroo paws, featherflowers and orchids, to name a just a few. One of the last flowers to emerge is the aptly named smelly socks (white plume grevillia). With the flowers on the end of long stalks and low grevillia shrubbery, these beautiful flowers attract many
insects and release a sickly sweet smell at dusk and into the evening. At the northern entrance of the national park visitors will notice pine trees along the roadside; these sandplain cypress (Actinostrobus) are native to the area. The Kalbarri Visitor Centre will provide you with info and keep you up to date with what’s flowering where - just pop in to see the friendly staff for a wildflower update.
