VISITOR GUIDE

adventure tours suitable for all types of visitors are on offer, making Kalbarri the perfect holiday choice. Kalbarri Visitor Centre is the first place to visit when you arrive. Located in the main street of town, it’s the place to head for to book tours, accommodation and coach transport. You’ll find friendly staff and all the local information on sightseeing, walk trails and what to see and do in the area.

Whatever time of year you visit, Kalbarri is sure to put on a show. December to February

Kalbarri enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with refreshing afternoon ocean breezes, each season providing its own unique experience.

A warm time of year with an average overnight temperature of 19°C and a daytime temperature average of 33°C. Traditionally it’s a very busy period for locals and visitors alike, with swimming, barbecues and water activities proving to be popular pastimes. Summer maximums can reach as high as 45°C, so please be prepared.

March to May This is the season that provides a transition from hot summer days to balmy blue skies with little wind and stunning days. It’s often the most popular time of the year for visiting as a result. You’ll enjoy perfect fishing weather and we’d say it’s the ideal time for a family holiday.

June to August Heathlands explode into a kaleidoscope of colour with the onset of wildflower season, bringing clear skies with a maximum of 22°C daily and 10°C overnight. A great time for hiking, caravanning and wildflower viewing.

September to November With humpback whale season in full swing and an average daytime temperature of 26°C, Kalbarri comes alive during September and October, with November quietening down so if you’re a traveller seeking solitude, head to Kalbarri during this month.

The Murchison River is the second longest river in WA, at 820 kilometres long, and has a catchment area of 82,000km2 (larger than Tasmania).Â

Kalbarri National Park covers an area of 186,000 hectares, the rugged terrain and relative seclusion of the park attracts thousands of visitors each year. 8

| Kalbarri V I S I T O R G U I D E

EVERYBODY CAN ENJOY our park, from the experienced hiker to family holiday makers, all catered for with access to 14 sites throughout the area. The township of Kalbarri is encircled by two distinctly different landscapes. East of town are inland river gorges with rock formations as old as 400 million years while the south features towering ocean cliffs plummeting to the waves below. The roads to the coastal sites are sealed and suitable for all vehicles, except for Pot Alley which is not suitable for caravans or motorhomes. All roads into the inland gorge sites are fully sealed. Shade shelters, toilets and picnic areas are available at these sites but remember there is no drinking water so carry three litres of water per person per day as fresh drinking water is not available. Temperatures in the river gorges can reach 50C (122F) in summer. Wear long sleeved, loose clothes and a hat. Hike early in the morning or late afternoon and always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

Meanarra Hill Lookout This limestone capped peak is visible from several different locations around Kalbarri. The road is sealed and you can take the short walk out to several informative lookouts with plenty of shade and seating – a great place to enjoy the sunset! At 207m above sea level this is the perfect vantage point for 360° views of Kalbarri and the Murchison River flowing into the Indian Ocean.

The Murchison River

The mighty Murchison River starts its journey in the range lands near Meekatharra, travelling across dry plains, hills, salt lakes and gorges with many tributaries forming this massive catchment area. Cyclonic activity in the north of the state drops heavy rain into the catchment area, resulting in floodwaters reaching Kalbarri up to three weeks later. In extreme flood events, muddy brown water can be seen emptying into the ocean creating a stark contrast between blue water and brown. Predatory fish lie in wait for the river inhabitants to be flushed out for a feast. These floodwaters carry an amazing array of nutrients that nourish and restore the river system; within a month the river is teeming with life again.

Kalbarri Skywalk

Currently under development the Kalbarri Skywalk is going to be a must see for all travellers to the area! Two spectacular cantilevered lookout structures are being constructed high above the curving Murchison River, providing uninterrupted views out over the gorge country. Standing on the mesh walkways will mean there is nothing but air between you and the river over 100 metres below. The site will include a small café where you can soak up the 400 million year old landscape that surrounds you. Earmarked for completion in late 2018/early 2019, make sure you pencil it in for your next visit. PHOTO CREDITS: Merr Watson, Parks & Wildlife Services

Take a walk along Kalbarri’s incredible coastal cliffs you’ll be rewarded with some unforgettable views and experiences. THE WALK TRAILS along Kalbarri’s sandstone cliffs, which plunge more than 100 metres to the ocean, are one of the great free experiences in the region. Allow plenty of time to explore this remarkable expanse of rugged coastline, decaying cliffs and amazing rock formations, all within 16km south of Kalbarri.

Natural Bridge

This lookout is a short walk from the car park, where visitors can enjoy stunning coastal views while relaxing at the shade shelter. Be on the lookout for marine life, including whales and dolphins.

The Boardwalk

Class 1, 1.2km return

This raised boardwalk connects Natural Bridge to Island Rock, accessible from either car park. A convenient seat along the way provides a stunning place to sit, relax and enjoy the views over the horizon. If time permits, continue on to the Bigurda Trail.

Island Rock

The resilient Island Rock was once part of the shoreline but now stands sentry as a solitary sea stack against the pounding ocean waves. Viewing platforms are a short distance from the car park, providing spectacular views of this geological marvel.

Shellhouse Grandstand

Fishermen at sea thought they could see a shellshaped house on the side of the cliff, hence the odd name. The terraced rock face is best viewed at sunset when glowing light against the sandstone cliff is especially spectacular.

Bigurda Trail

Class 3, 8km one-way (16km return) or shorter if you join the trail at Island Rock or Grandstand.

Bigurda is Nhanda for a small kangaroo, also known as the euro. Connecting Eagle Gorge to Natural Bridge, this sandy trail provides stunning coastal views with great photo opportunities. From winter through to the end of spring, walkers will see a vast array of wildflower species. Dolphin pods are a common sight too, as well as humpback whales during the migration season. Some parts of the trail have uneven surfaces with loose stones; it hugs the coastline and is close to the cliff edge so watch your step.

Whether it’s catching a glimpse of some of the world’s largest creatures, sailing at sunset or doing a 360 at the local skate park, Kalbarri’s got it all.

River Foreshore

A beautifully maintained foreshore with shady trees, shelter huts and playgrounds with barbecues, the river foreshore is an ideal location to spend the day or have a picnic with the family and relax. There’s plenty of room for a family cricket match, to kick the footy or just sit back and watch the boats navigating in and out of the channel with the catch of the day.

Chinaman’s Beach

Where the river meets the sea, Chinaman’s is an ideal place to swim in the calm sheltered water – as a result, it’s a great spot for kids. The point at Chinaman’s has always been a favourite fishing spot too – try off the rocks or at the wheelchair accessible platform. Please note that no fishing is permitted on the beach. Remember to bring your camera too – sunset is the perfect time to capture a memorable photograph.

Back Beach

A 10-minute walk from town, Back Beach is a great place for exploring rock pools at low tide. Trails from this area lead to Chinaman’s Point and the Zuytdorp memorial lookout.

Siphon Beach

Marking the southernmost boundary of the FHPA, Siphon Beach is an ideal stretch of shoreline to take an early morning stroll. It’s a relatively quiet spot with a beautiful reef break.

Jakes Beach, National Surfing Reserve

The bay provides protected areas from the summer prevailing winds and is family-friendly with dune restoration surrounding the area. The elevation at Jakes Point creates a natural grandstand for spectators to watch surfers and dolphins riding this world class wave.

Blue holes All marine life is protected and no fishing activities are permitted; also no shells are to be taken off the beach. Dogs, recreational boating and the use of jetskis in the FHPA is prohibited.

Blue Holes

Part of an inshore limestone reef system, with some sections permanently submerged and others exposed, giving the ‘Blue Holes’ stretch of coast its name. Declared as a Fish Habitat Protection Area (FHPA) in 2007, it’s home to more than 70 species of finfish. Some fish to look out for include dart, moon wrasse, raccoon butterfly fish, humbugs and western rock lobster. There are as many as 10 types of sponge, 11 species of coral, crustaceans such as banded hair shrimp and beds of oysters. Blue Holes offers a range of recreational activities including swimming, snorkelling and beach-combing.

Wittecarra Beach

This stretch of beach from Wittecarra south to Red Bluff is a popular choice for beach fishing with 4WD access.

Red Bluff Beach

A white sandy beach ideal for swimming, body surfing and fishing. Head to Red Bluff Beach and walk on top of the winding rock platforms. You’ll be amazed by the changing colours of the Tumblagooda sandstone.

Skatepark

If you’ve got a skater kid in tow, head over to the Kalbarri Skate Park. It’s a community initiative and classed as a competition-standard park. The bowl is the second biggest in WA with landscaping and shade shelters so everybody can enjoy watching the aerodynamics. Remember, for safety’s sake wear protective gear at the park and keep an eye on your children at all times.

Surf’s Up

One of the state’s most famous remote surfing breaks, Jakes Point is on most serious surfers’ bucket list. Right here in Kalbarri, the iconic lefthander is a National Surfing Reserve and is one of those unique waves that is mastered best by the local surfers. Like most reefs, Jakes breaks from two feet and up and is recommended for experienced surfers only. Meanwhile, Jakes Bay offers a safer option for the novice providing the perfect safe training ground for the next generation of talent. Kalbarri has a very strong surfing community where locals take their surfing and the protection of the environment seriously.

Fishing

Kalbarri’s coastline is a paradise for fishing enthusiasts, and the pursuit can be enjoyed year round with a large variety of fish on offer. Just make sure you familiarise yourself with fishing regulations and size guidelines before setting off after the big one. Two boat ramps at either end of town provide ample access for boats to launch. Navigation through the channel can be dangerous so boaties are advised to check local conditions before heading out to sea. Visit fish.wa.gov.au for bag and size limits and to download the app. Please note, an eight-knot speed limit applies in the Murchison River. Always log on to Kalbarri VMR673, via VHF channel 80 or 27.91MHz. Check weather reports with Kalbarri VMR on 9937 2112. Further information is available at kalbarrisearescue.com. 2018 |

Surrounding Areas Go off the beaten track while you’re in Kalbarri and you’ll discover hidden treasures a-plenty. Port Gregory

The town of Port Gregory lies south of Kalbarri near the mouth of Hutt River. This picturesque fishing village is encircled by five kilometres of exposed reef, originally established to serve the Geraldine Lead Mine and whalers. However, it soon became clear that it was not suitable for large vessels. Rich in history, Port Gregory was once bombarded by a submarine during WWII. Further down the road is Lynton Station, home to the Governor’s mansion and stone convict ruins which are currently under restoration. Great for fishing and swimming and locals say, the road in gives you the best view of the Pink Lake.

Horrocks

Named after a convict who was transported to Western Australia in 1851 for forging and uttering, this small coastal town is a scenic family holiday spot. South of Horrocks lies the Bowes River, with good shore fishing and surfing at the river mouth. Horrocks Beach was named Best Mainland Aussie Beach 2018 on Brad Farmer’s list of Australia’s 101 Best Beaches for 2018.

VISITOR GUIDE

Houtman Abrolhos Islands

Approximately 60km offshore from Kalbarri, the Abrolhos is a chain of 122 islands and associated coral reefs. It is the southernmost true coral reef in the Indian Ocean and one of the highest latitude reef systems in the world. It’s also home to one of the world’s most important seabird breeding sites and is the centre of Western Australia’s largest single species fishery, the western rock lobster. The islands have a small seasonal population of fishermen and a limited number of tourists are permitted for day trips, but most of the land area is off limits as a conservation habitat. Flights are available to land and explore the island of East Wallabi from Kalbarri and can be booked at the Kalbarri Visitor Centre.

An unsealed road takes you to the site of the original lead smelter for Geraldine Mine. It was one of the first to be built in WA over 150 years ago after lead was discovered by Augustus Gregory while he was exploring the area for pastoral development. The site still retains solid stonework and foundations from its working days. Nowadays it’s adorned with wildflowers when in season and is a great spot to visit if you have enough time. Four wheel drive is recommended if you are continuing on to the mine itself.

This independent sovereign state seceded from Australia on April 21, 1970. The province is open for visitors between 9am and 4pm daily. The principality has been developed with tourists in mind and the administration building contains a government office, post office and a charming interdenominational chapel. You may have your passport stamped here and visas are available at the Kalbarri Visitor Centre. Prince Leonard abdicated in 2017 to make way for his son Prince Graeme to take on his legacy.

Pink Lake

Hutt Lagoon was given its colourful name by explorer George Grey who camped on its edge in 1839. The pink hue is due to the presence of the carotenoid-producing algae, dunaliella salina, a source of beta-carotene, a food-colouring agent and source of vitamin A. The lagoon contains the world’s largest microalgae production plant and a commercial supply of artemia parthenogenetica (brine shrimp). Artemia is a speciality feed used by prawn and fish farmers as well as the aquarium fish trade. The best viewing can be found along the road to Port Gregory between 10am – 2pm with the sun high overhead.

The ruins of this town can be seen from the Port Gregory road, and still standing is part of the jail, magistrates quarters and hiring depot. Lynton Station has Captain Sanford Homestead with views of the ocean and Pink Lake. The old barn incorporates a museum that can be visited to take in this unique history of Australia.

We respectfully acknowledge the past and present traditional owners of this land. We commemorate the cultural connections between the Dutch and the Nhanda People.

Grey’s Spring

Opposite the Pizza Shop you will find the spring where George Grey found his lifeline after being shipwrecked here in 1839.

Zuytdorp Memorial

Take the short stroll to read the plaque, whilst looking out along the stretch of coastline that claimed this boat in 1712.

Wittecarra Creek

Stop here to learn about the fate of two surviving mutineers from the Batavia.

Murchison House Station

Take a morning to enjoy the highlights of this working station. A colourful past makes for an interesting visit.

Treasure Ships

It’s no surprise that the remote and windswept coastline of Kalbarri has been the setting of many shipwecks over time. The most famous of these was the Batavia from the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Built in Amsterdam in 1628 and armed with 24 cast-iron cannons, it was shipwrecked on June 4 of the following year. She struck Morning Reef, part of the Abrolhos Islands group on her maiden voyage. The event went down in infamy thanks to the mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. Commander Pelsaert left survivors on the island to make the treacherous journey to Java in a tiny long boat for help. The crew plotted mutiny while Wiebbe Hayes and his followers held the mutineers at bay until Pelsaert returned. Some of the mutineers were sentenced to death, some taken home for sentencing and two cast ashore at Kalbarri, believed to be at the site of Wittecarra Creek.

VISITOR GUIDE

Warribano Chimney

This smelter was for the Geraldine lead mine a short distance away and still has a chimney and ruins for the public to access.

Geraldine Lead Mine

If continuing to the mine, four-wheel drive is necessary. Here you can see the cemetery, sorting floor and a variety of camp ruins and mine shafts. Caution is required as this is an unsafe area.

Galena Bridge

See the height difference as you drive over the new, then turn right and follow track to drive across the old bridge. Marvel at the fact that the 2007 flood had water almost touching the underneath of the new bridge.

Ajana Railhead/water tank

With the tracks all but gone, the water tank used for steam engines is still standing. Across the track is the old Ajana well, covered in sheets of iron to guard against animals falling in and contaminating the water supply. Also helping with evaporation, this reminds us how precious water was and still is.

Northampton

Gazetted in 1864, Northampton has an abundance of history. We suggest starting at the Chiverton House Museum where you can roam the rooms full of times gone by. Pick up a walking guide to get you to all the other points of interest in this quaint country town.

Kalbarri’s rich tapestry of flora and fauna — both on land and under the sea — has proved a magnet for visitors over the years. Blooming Marvellous

One mention of wildflowers and many people will think of Kalbarri; over 1000 species grow here with many unique to the area. Starting at the end of June through to October, travellers make their way here from all over the world to witness the transformation as the land is suddenly ablaze with colour. The coastal areas of the national park boast plants such as the Murchison Rose which can only be found here in Kalbarri. Make your way inland and the sand plains become carpets of pink and white everlastings and orange immortelles, jostling for space between starflowers, kangaroo paws, featherflowers and orchids, to name just a few. One of the last flowers to emerge is the aptly named smelly socks (white plume grevillia). With the flowers on the end of long stalks and low grevillia shrubbery, these beautiful flowers attract many insects and release a sickly sweet smell at dusk and into the evening. At the northern entrance of the national park visitors will notice pine trees along the roadside; these sandplain cypress (Actinostrobus) are native to the area. The Kalbarri Visitor Centre will provide you with information and keep you up to date with what’s flowering where - just pop in to see the friendly staff for a wildflower update.

VISITOR GUIDE

e f i l Wild

All Creatures Great And Small

Parks and wildlife services are working tirelessly to reintroduce native animals such as the chuditch and woylie back to Kalbarri National Park. The latest release of black flanked rock wallabies has been successful and continued monitoring will ensure an increase in population. Some of the most common animals you’ll encounter are western grey and euro kangaroos, emus, short beaked echidnas, shingle back and ta-ta lizards. Look out too for the thorny devil, a small, fascinating reptile that feeds exclusively on black ants with an amazing ability to absorb water through its skin like a straw.

Birds of a Feather

Kalbarri has an abundant bird population with as many as 170 species. Along the coast you will encounter sea-eagles and osprey and the ever-popular pelicans and sand pipers. If you venture out to sea you may be lucky enough to catch the flight of a yellow-nose albatross. Wedge-tailed eagles and kestrels can often be spied patrolling the deep PHOTO CREDITS: Yvonne McKenzie, Bernard Sashe, Katrina Downes

gorges, while fairy martins and swallows nest in the cliff faces. The lower reaches of the Murchison River are home to an amazing array of birdlife with the red-tailed cockatoos, Carnaby’s black cockatoos, egrets, kites, wood ducks and black swans. In the town site, swarms of pink and grey galahs, ringneck parrots, mudlarks and cuckoo shrikes can often be seen in the trees and grassed foreshore.

Whale Season

Around 35,000 humpback whales pass the Kalbarri coastline each year. Between May to August they head north on their annual migration leaving their feeding grounds in Antarctica and reaching as far as Camden Sound along the Kimberley coast. Breeding whales give birth in the warm waters before returning south from August to November when they hug the shoreline to shelter their young. At birth, calves are approximately four to five metres in length and weigh approximately two tonnes. Mothers produce nearly 240 litres of milk for their calves each day. Best viewing points are often at higher coastal lookouts such as Natural Bridge, Eagle Gorge and Red Bluff.

seen from cliff tops, close to shore with their yellowish pattern on their sides making them easy to identify. Bottlenose dolphins are also plentiful, and can be seen frequently while fishing or boating offshore. They have a short rounded, snout.

Pelicans

Did you know pelicans are recorded as having the longest bill of any living bird? Why not join the volunteers each morning at 8.45am to feed these beautiful waterbirds a tasty selection of fish? A gold coin donation is appreciated to help with costs.

Dolphins

You’ll see two types of dolphins in the area - the common dolphins are usually 2018 |
