WELCOME

W

elcome - you’ve arrived in one of the best - if not THE best - capital city in the world. Perth has been our little secret for years, but now the world has woken up to the fact that the most remote capital city on earth has really rather a lot to offer visitors. For a start, that coastline which the city hugs is simply stunning. From Yanchep lagoon in the north to Coogee in the south, the beaches are whiter and softer than any you’ll find in the Caribbean. And in many cases, you won’t have to fight for a spot to lay your towel. A recent investment in new hotels, venues and a loosening of licencing laws means that a night out in the city is more vibrant - and affordable - than ever. Make sure you visit Elizabeth Quay and Yagan Square - two brand new attractions in the

heart of the city with food and drink events running throughout the year. Plenty of world-class shows and performers add Perth to their list now, thanks to the arrival of the impressive Optus Stadium (Ed Sheeran christened the venue in February) and the Perth Arena. There are plenty of other smaller venues too where it’s possible to see plays, listen to jazz or catch an up-and-coming band. Us Western Australians (or Sandgropers as we’re known) love live sport too - you’ve arrived just in time for the new Aussie Rules Footy season; go see a live game at the new stadium and hear the roar of the crowd as home town heroes the West Coast Eagles or Fremantle Dockers play this tough and exciting game over a couple of hours.. We’ve redesigned this guide and hope that you’ll enjoy reading about our city and its surrounding areas. If you have time, why not head south to Margaret River or north to Broome? Wherever you go, we hope you enjoy your stay.

MASTER OF FUNK Grammy Award winner and worldrenowned, multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter/producer/director/ musician Bruno Mars is set to return to Perth Arena as part his 24K Magic World Tour. The Uptown Funk superstar sold out arenas across Australia in 2014 and fans have been begging for his return ever since. The critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer, director, musician recently dominated charts with the worldwide smash single, “Uptown Funk.” The RIAA diamond certified

smash made history as the longestleading Billboard “Hot 100” single of the 2010s, and is only the 10th single in the chart’s 57-year history to spend at least 14 weeks at number 1. According to Billboard, Mars scored his first five “Hot 100” #1 singles faster than any male artist since Elvis Presley. As a singer, songwriter and producer, Bruno Mars has now massed an incredible catalog of 35 “Hot 100” hits to date. FLOOR FILLER In the past two decades, the highly acclaimed Australian production of Burn the Floor has simply revolutionised ballroom style worldwide. The production was conceived as a theatrical dance performance in 1997 by Australian Producer Harley Medcalf, as a combination of ballroom dance tradition and history, staged with a rock and roll pedigree. Since its first performance in the UK in 1999, Burn the Floor has toured regularly around the globe. With three seasons in the West End, multiple tours through Japan, China, South Africa, Canada and the USA, Europe and the UK, South East Asia and New Zealand, the show has created a formidable performance history and reputation.

Burn the Floor

OLDIES ARE BEST After two smash-hit Sydney seasons, the hilarious comedy revue Senior Moments is back for its first national tour, with the legendary John Wood and Max Gillies now joining Benita Collings and Geoff Harvey in the senior theatrical sensation. It’s a comedy revue about old people and the young people they have to deal with, including sketches and songs and performers who are old enough to know better. Senior Moments, Heath Ledger Theatre, March 21 to 25. Visit ticketek. com.au or call 08 6212 9292. 15

Performing on Broadway in 2009, Burn the Floor set a new box office record at the Longacre Theatre, 48th Street, during their 193 Broadway show run. In the last six years, Burn the Floor has also helped to reinvent entertainment in the Cruise Ship industry, now with five permanent dance show installations around the world on ships with Norwegian Cruise Line, playing to over 10,000 people every week. With their unique combination of jaw-dropping choreography and ground-breaking high-voltage dance moves, Burn the Floor brings its now legendary, infectious and rebellious athletic energy to the stage with every single performance. Director and Co-Choreographer Peta Roby has been with Burn the Floor since the very beginning. “Today our dancers, hold nothing back, physically or emotionally. They are not afraid to explore daring choreography, or wear their heart on their sleeve.” “And, our audiences today are very educated about dance, and have high expectations and appreciation of the 16

art-form and stage craft.” With this 10th world tour, scheduled in their 20th year, don’t miss your chance to experience the “pure dance joy” of Burn The Floor, as it continues to raise the dance performance standard to another level. Burn the Floor, Perth, The Regal Theatre, April 12 to 21. Visit ticketek. com.au. HARRY’S GAME There will be an unusually high number of ear muffs required on April 21 for one reason and one reason only - the arrival of superstar hearthrob Harry Styles on the Perth Arena stage. Harry’s self-titled debut album soared to the top of the charts around the world and his first Australian shows sold out in less than a minute. So if you’ve got tickets, treat them like gold dust. And if you haven’t, then there’s a You Tube version of his concert out there on the internet as the next best thing. Harry Styles, Perth Arena, April 21. Visit ticketek.com.au. Here, you will be wowed as you witness the birth of one of mother nature’s finest creations – an Australian South Sea Cultured Pearl. After years of cultivation, the pearl is taken straight out of the oyster that’s opened in front of you. These pearls usually range from $500 to $5,000; however just a few months ago, a $20,000 pearl was harvested right here in Elizabeth Quay. Who knows, you might get lucky.

BAR FLY

Gabi Mills heads skyward and watches the sunset at Perth’s newest rooftop bar Hi-Line at Crown.

Hi-Line Bar at Crown

TWR at Crown

M

aking the most of the hot autumn we’ve all enjoyed/ endured, I headed upwards to find some relief. If you think a rooftop bar in the Crown Perth complex would leave even the most height-happy among us clinging to the railings, relax. The new Hi-Line Rooftop Bar is a mere 30 or so astro-turfed steps up above the main entrance of the Metropol - so you can leave the vertigo tablets at home. It’s high enough up though to give the Insta-Gen plenty of opportunity to snap those gorgeous technicolour sunsets we all see cluttering up our feeds (guilty as charged). The bar - which popped up over a mere five weeks - is a little oasis of fake greenery, comfy nooks and open air seating. On a balmy night, it’s a good place to kick off an evening out at the Crown which is what we did after a 30-plus degree day around the Crown Towers’ seven pools. The cocktail list is mouth-watering - signature cocktails ($19) like a Crimson Samurai (Havana Club Añejo 3 Años, raspberry, passionfruit and yuzu) or the ultra-zingy Kaffir Lime Daiquiri (Havana Club Añejo 3 Años, coconut and kaffir lime). I loved my classic Mojito while Mr Mills went for the Caprioska (Ketel One Vodka, lime and sugar). While atmosphere was a 50

little thin on the ground, the celestial sideshow more than made up for the lack of a buzz. To be fair, it was only half six in the evening - no doubt this place kicks off later on, being perfectly positioned opposite the always popular Merrywell pub. We ordered some Mac n Cheese Jalapeño Bites and Nachos with beef chilli, gooey melted cheese, avo and sour cream - yummy, but be prepared to wait 20 mins or so for your order. Much later on we headed to TWR (The Waiting Room), the lobby bar in the Crown Towers. Now that’s a bar with chutzpah - the bar staff were sensational, mixing any and all cocktails we required, even off-piste, their mixology mastery a delight to behold. My advice? Start high, end lobbylevel for the perfect bar crawl. Stay safe when driving in Western Australia

All drivers and passengers, including children, must wear a seat belt in Australia. There are large fines for not complying.

Remember Drive On Left

Obey the Speed Limits

Drive on the left-hand side of the road. If you are not used to driving on the left, tape a reminder note on your dashboard.

Speed is a major cause of death and injury and speed limits are strictly enforced. In suburban areas where there are no speed limit signs, the speed limit is 50km/h. 53

Road rules that you should know when driving in Western Australia

Road rules that you when driving in We

Roundabouts

On entering always give way to any vehicles already in the roundabout. On multi-lane roundabouts, obey the directional arrows on the road.

Turning left

On approach, indicate left from the left lane.

Driving straight ahead

You don’t need to indicate on approach. Indicate left when you’ve passed the last exit before the one you intend to use.

Turning right or making a full turn

On approach, indicate right from the right lane. Indicate left when you’ve passed the last exit before the one you intend to use.

Uncontrolled Intersections

An uncontrolled intersection is where there is no traffic signal, stop sign, or give way sign. As a rule, at an uncontrolled intersection, always give way to the right, to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians.

Merging

Where two lanes merge into one (i.e. lane lines end) the vehicle in front has the right of way. Remember: • Always use your indicator when merging; • Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, and take turns to merge if there are long lines of merging traffic 48

DON’T MISS . . . The Fremantle International Street Arts Festival (FISAF), will be returning to the streets of Fremantle this Easter long weekend to mark its 20th year. This unique festival amplifies the Fremantle experience to a whole new level, with an eclectic mix of high-calibre artists performing throughout the city’s streets, restaurants, bars and parks from Good Friday (30 March) to Easter Sunday (2 April). FISAF brings together buskers, street theatre, bands, local pop-up bars and delicious eateries each year – and this year is no different. The world-class

entertainers who will joining this year’s festivities include: Forest Ants in the City: ‘The ants go marching two by two’ - after they left their colony in Germany to explore the unknown city of Fremantle. BirdMen: A Dutch theatre group and their gigantic roving birds will invade the streets of Fremantle. These colourful beings are impressive by day, and spectacular by night. Nudes: A bunch of Brits will do ‘nudie runs’ all the way to Australia. Naked as nature (never quite) intended, these performers leave passers-by in awe as they hit the streets. RIGHT ROYAL Sandalford Wines has catered for everyone from Mariah Carey to royalty. Mia Lacy meets the historic estate’s head of corporate tourism, Jenny Hvalgaard. ML: What attracted you to a career in hospitality? JH: At a young age, I knew I had a passion and that passion was for people. I truly loved being around people and my calling to the hospitality industry was there very early on. My parents were caterers and I got involved in the business on the weekends working at events and there was really no turning back. To be good at it, I’ve learnt you have to be very creative. And you have to understand people, anticipate their needs and always leave an element of surprise which will exceed their expectations. To be in hospitality, you need to be hospitable – it’s that simple! ML: You’ve been involved for more than 40 years now – what do you love about it? 74

JH: Events here at Sandalford Wines are incredibly interesting! The venue itself is unique and has so many options, so it is up to us to transform the client’s ideas into reality and excite them with new ideas. Here, we have an ideal niche in corporate socials – those huge conferences and meetings where national and international companies are looking for an offsite venue for dinner, a cocktail party or product launch with a point of difference. Being just 25 minutes out of Perth means we’re also highly accessible. ML: In your opinion, what sets your venue apart? JH: Sandalford is limited only by your imagination – it’s a diverse and beautiful venue recognised as an industry leader here.

MEET AND GREET Above, the Dutch Royal Family at Sandalford.

We cater particularly well to the auto industry because we can put vehicles into our Underground Cellar and Oak Room to create spectacular launches. Dietary needs are a key issue now, and Sandalford Wines has embraced this completely and we cater outstandingly, in my view, as we are able to do anything at all – including kosher. We are fortunate to have wonderful weather here in Perth so I love creating al fresco events. As well as corporate socials, Sandalford is very popular for weddings. People enjoy theming their weddings to our different indoor venues here too. Working on Sandalford’s concert events, where the VIP corporate areas are all mine to conceptualise and produce, is highly

rewarding on concert day too! ML: What’s been the highlight of the last year for you? JH: I love working with our chefs to create superb menus that exceed people’s expectations. A highlight was managing the function we created for the King and Queen of the Netherlands. Initially, for several weeks I worked with a diplomat from Canberra and was completely in the dark about who the visitors actually were. We liaised closely with the Australian Federal Police and eventually the Royal Household staff to ensure the event’s security and protocol was perfect. After 40 years you feel pretty confident with your skills and experience, but at a pre-tasting the chef brought out our fabulous canapes and we learnt they were not the right size for a royal event – the members of the Royal Household actually measured them! Canapes for Royalty have to be literally ONE bite – to avoid any messy mishaps. So, of course, we delivered and proved that you never stop learning. The requirements of this function were different, but the level of attention to detail was what we would normally give any event. Visit sandalford.com 75

he Swan Valley is only 25 minutes from the centre of Perth and is WA’s oldest wine growing region. It’s where you will experience a colourful blend of heritage and culture, people, art, world-class wine, gourmet goodies and fresh produce. The Swan Valley has a number of award-winning wineries. Some offer superb alfresco and restaurant dining and you can enjoy cosy fortifiers while basking in the warmth of a log fire in winter. The wineries are open for tasting all year round. Make time to visit some the Swan Valley breweries. You’ll discover over 20 locally-made brews are on offer in the region. Small batches and a swift turnaround mean five micro brew outlets are always on the go, making a changing array of beers in a wide range of styles. These vary according to the whim of the brewer, but always include pale and dark ales, Belgian wheat beer and stout.

BIKE - You can get a list of bike hire companies from the Swan Valley Visitor Centre in Guildford. It’s recommended that you hire bicycles from the City and take the train to Guildford. cultural heritage. First records of human occupation of Rottnest Island date back more than 6,500 years ago when the island was still attached to the mainland, and Aboriginal people inhabited the area. Since its initial European exploration from the 17th Century and its settlement in 1829, Rottnest Island has been through a number of stages of development and has been used for a variety of purposes.

MINUTES WITH... We ask comedian and actor. Matt Okine to describe his vices.

Gluttony What is the food you could eat over and over again? Not a day goes by where I don’t think about salt ‘n’ vinegar chips. Most weekends, there’s more crumbs in my bed than a luxury sheet’s thread count. I’m all about crinkle cut too.

Greed You’re given $1m that you have to spend selfishly – what would you spend it on? I’d spend $900,000 on a beachside apartment in Fremantle. But last time I went swimming there, I got stung by a jellyfish, so I’d spend the other $100,000 bribing stingers to leave me alone.

Sloth Where would you spend a long time doing nothing? I was in Athens recently, and I had one too many beers after lunch which means we arrived at the Partheneum JUST after it closed. But we went to this little hill 84

right next to it and watched the sunset and it was awesome. I could spend all day on that hill . . . assuming Uber eats delivers up there.

Wrath Which news story makes you white with rage? I once read a news story about a man in Phuket airport who walked around naked and threw poo at people because he ‘overdosed on Viagra’. I’m furious! I left my extra-large packet of viagra at Phuket airport just yesterday and I’m pretty sure he’s necked it all. Spewin’.

Envy Who’s shoes would you like to walk in? LeBron James’s. Only because I have size 15 shoes, and so does he. I spent years squeezing into shoes that were too small, and now my toes are all gross and bent, but I’m trying to bring fugly feet back.

Pride What is the one thing you’re secretly proud of?

My table tennis abilities. My signature move is a ‘doublehanded backhand’. Many would consider it a rather foolish waste of energy to play a doublehanded shot for table-tennis, but I’m really just preparing both of my hands for when I’m holding up the Bunbury Under 33s Table-Tennis Champions trophy later this year*... (*not a real tournament)

Lust What makes your heart beat faster? There’s an instagram account called @liftingnoodles. It’s just pictures of noodles being lifted up by chopsticks. I could look at that account all day. I feel like a ramen just thinking about it. See Matt Okine’s show The Hat Game during the Perth Comedy Festival, Regal Theatre, May 12. Visit ticketek.com.au. 85

Deluxe King Room, Crown Towers

The choice is yours

P

erth is in the middle of an accommodation bonanza for all budgets. Never before have so many rooms been available for so many price brackets. Thanks to the recent creation of so many new venues - the six-star Crown Towers and The Treasury being the most notable - the boom isn’t over yet. Later in 2018 an additional 720 rooms will become available. Some 24 new hotels will open in and around Perth over the next three years, adding almost 4,000 rooms to the local market at a cost of more than $3 billion. Existing hotels like the elegant The Terrace Hotel and Parmelia Hilton right in the heart of Perth’s business district have continued to offer visitors top quality accommodation and dining options. What does that mean? It means staying in the west’s capital city has never been more affordable for visitors because so much choice has pushed down prices. And that’s very good news for visitors keen to make the most of their stay in the most remote capital city on earth. If you’re heading out of the city to the Margaret River region (a threeand-a-half-hour drive) or the newly created Bunbury Geographe region,

just two hours from the CBD, there’s a wide choice again. You can stay close to vineyards and dine like superstars on local produce (Cape Lodge) or on the beach (Abbey Beach Resort), rent a beautiful private home via Private

Little Beach, Albany

Properties, or stay on the farm in charming Balingup Heights. You can glamp (Wild Goose Camping) or camp the traditional way in the heart of the south west. Carry on driving south, and you’ll discover The Amazing South Coast, a historically rich and agriculturally diverse region famous for being the last place Aussie soldiers saw before sailing off to the horrors of the First World War. Local towns like Albany, Bremmer Bay and Denmark

have stunning coastlines, rich culture and delicious locally produced food to offer visitors. Head to the top end and you’ll discover the tropical paradise of Broome. A unique little town that hugs the incredible Cable Beach, once you’ve arrived you’ll find it hard to leave. Again there’s a huge variety of accommodation options here, from the best in town - Cable Beach Resort, the Mangrove Resort Hotel and Kimberley Sands Resort and Spa - to friendly backpacker hostels. Whatever or wherever you choose
