W
elcome - you’ve arrived in one of the best - if not THE best - capital city in the world. Perth has been our little secret for years, but now the world has woken up to the fact that the most remote capital city on earth has really rather a lot to offer visitors. For a start, that coastline which the city hugs is simply stunning. From Yanchep lagoon in the north to Coogee in the south, the beaches are whiter and softer than any you’ll find in the Caribbean. And in many cases, you won’t have to fight for a spot to lay your towel. A recent investment in new hotels, venues and a loosening of licencing laws means that a night out in the city is more vibrant - and affordable - than ever. Make sure you visit Elizabeth Quay and Yagan Square - two brand new attractions in the heart of the city with food and drink events running throughout the year. Plenty of world-class shows and performers add Perth to their list now, thanks to the arrival of the impressive Optus Stadium (Ed Sheeran
WELCOME christened the venue in February) and the Perth Arena. There are plenty of other smaller venues too where it’s possible to see plays, listen to jazz or catch an up-and-coming band. Us Western Australians (or Sandgropers as we’re known) love live sport too - you’ve arrived just in time for the new Aussie Rules Footy season; go see a live game at the new stadium and hear the roar of the crowd as home town heroes the West Coast Eagles or Fremantle Dockers play this tough and exciting game over a couple of hours.. We’ve put all our local knowledge into this guide, and hope that you’ll enjoy reading about our city and surrounding areas. If you have time, why not head south to Margaret River or north to Broome? We hope you enjoy your stay.

Fancy sticky-beaking the houses of the rich and famous from the comfort of a plush speed boat? Then this is the tour for you. Wild West Charter tours set off from Elizabeth Quay and travel across the face of the City of Perth City under the freeway along beautiful Kings Park, following the contours of Mounts Bay Road. You’ll venture around Matilda Bay and Pelican Point and along Millionaire’s Row along Nedlands and Dalkeith. The tour then runs up the eastern side of the Karrakatta Bank to Claremont and Peppermint Grove where you will be informed at the exact location of a fatal shark attack in 1926. The boat will idle around the shallows under the cliffs at Peppermint Grove where passengers will get a chance to view and also be informed of the marine life below. The tour will then reach Mosman Bay where clients will see “close up” two of Perths and indeed Australia’s most incredible houses before venturing back to Elizabeth Quay following the Southern bank past the suburbs of Attadale, Alfred Cove and Applecross and Como. Located on the upper level at Yagan Square with stunning views of the CBD, Ficus is a smart casual dining collaboration by Kevin Opferkuch of Bunbury Farmers Market and Paul Vanderplancke of Cantina 663 in Mount Lawley. The fresh food offering is farm to plate with a strong focus on south west produce and full food provenance. Domestic goddess coming to Perth She is one of the most successful food writers of all time, having sold more than ten million cookbooks worldwide, teaching us How To Eat and How To Be A Domestic Goddess. Now it’s time to meet the woman behind the cookbooks. Direct from London’s West End, An Evening with Nigella Lawson is Nigella’s brand-new show, where she tells her own remarkable culinary story, live on stage. “I’m very excited that Australia and
Nigella Lawson
New Zealand will be the first countries outside of the UK to see this show,” Nigella said. “I love the food and the people, and so I am delighted to be touring the country, meeting audiences and sharing our culinary stories. Nigella is one of the most talkedabout celebrities in the world, but now she’s doing the talking. An Evening with Nigella Lawson is interactive and intimate, inviting culinary questions from the audience, with Nigella sharing her thoughts, food stories and insights into the role food plays in life, plus what she is eating and cooking now. Entertaining and eminently articulate, Nigella is one of the world’s most intriguing stars: mother, former book reviewer (she became the deputy literary editor of The Sunday Times at the age of 26), TV host, award-winning author (her most recent best-seller, At My Table, is her 11th cookbook) and a compulsive collector of cookbooks. For Nigella, food is a celebration of life – and Australian audiences have shared her passion for food and cooking via her top rating television shows Nigella: At My Table and Simply Nigella, as well as her regular appearances on MasterChef Australia. Garum
Hot spots GARUM You’ll find Garum (named after a Roman fish sauce) in the historical Hibernian Hall, the new hot spot in the east end of Perth’s CBD. Hibernian Hall has been meticulously preserved and regenerated as part of a major project by BGC Development at Hibernian Place, 480 Hay Street, including the new Westin Perth resulting in a transformation of the area into a world class community hub. Built in 1902 as a community resource for the Irish Catholics it was used primarily as space for celebratory gatherings. The hall takes its name from the Latin word for Ireland. Reflecting on this rich history the inspiration is to explore the Roman connection. As a result, Roman techniques and traditions take the focus of the menu. Uncomplicated and pure are the cornerstones of the kitchen philosophy, delivering local ingredients with a very unique Roman flavour. Already garnering rave reviews, the Guy Grossi-led restaurant is one for all Italian food lovers to notch up on their must-do list. Don’t miss: Cacio e Pepe - a deceptively simple pasta dish of tonarelli, pecorino and pepper. 39

BAR FLY
Goody Two’s Don’t let the name confuse you. You’re allowed to be a little bit risqué, a little bit off the hook at Goody Two’s, the newest late night Japanese whisky bar in town. By GABI MILLS
C
onveniently situated just a short stumble across the plaza from The Westin Perth, and in the same little collection of hotspots as Hadiqa (on the top floor), Custard & Co on ground level and Huxtaburger round the corner, Goody Two’s is set to be the not-so-quiet achiever under the pavement which may just very well be your new favourite place to go for a night cap - or two. As you head down, down down those stairs, you’ll find a voluptuous welcome. So voluptuous in fact there’s even glorious floral wallpaper wrapped around the cavernous room. It may feel like you’re taking a drink in Oscar Wilde’s waistcoat but that’s where any ideas that this is something from the Victorian age ends. This is modern bar life done right. Let’s start at the beginning - the bar itself. You’ve probably come here after a night on the town, so first impressions are that this is where you should have started off proceedings. The rows and rows of whiskies, all

amber and gold, are a sight for sore eyes (and perhaps later, sore heads), but let’s keep it classy and order one of the bespoke highballs or cocktails. We loved the Upper East Manhattan and a chic take on a classic Japanese highball, the Haru Spritz (umeshu, yuzu and prosecco). There’s a fine short wine list, local beers on tap and sake too, as you might expect from a bar owned by that can-do-no-wrong combination of Andy Freeman (who also owns Hadiqa, Caballitos, Big Bopper, The Flour Factory and Varnish on King) and Bib and Tucker’s Eamon Sullivan and Scott Bridger. But it’s the Japanese whisky which really sets this joint apart. They’ve managed to curate a collection from around Japan that must be Perth’s - if not Australia’s - most definitive tour of this complex spirit. As the clock ticks on towards midnight and beyond, the place really comes alive. Music from a DJ gets guests up and dancing. And this isn’t a place just for the hipsters or the young things out for the first time. When we

visited there was a refreshing crosssection of age groups, all giving it some on the dancefloor. You’ll want something to mop up all that delicious booze, and here’s where the handiwork of Scott and Eamon comes into play. The clever chefs behind Bib and Tucker’s success have allowed their creativity to run
free at this underground crucible of hedonism. Think skewers, hot and dripping with porky juices, made extra-tasty thanks to red miso and daikon. Or Wagin duck korekke with cherry blossom and GFC - that’s Goody’s Fried Chicken - with sauces on the side. Who says bar food has to be boring? These guys have reinvented the Big Night Out and we can’t wait to wear our two shoes (goody or not) there again as soon as possible. Goody Two’s, Basement, 40 Irwin Street, Perth, open Weds/Thurs from 5pm to midnight, Fri/Sat from 5pm to 2am. Visit goodytwos.com.au

ON THE RECORD... with Matt Tarrant
MAGIC MATT Matt Tarrant will blow people’s minds again in Perth with his new solo show, MoreUNSOLVED during the Fringe World Festival in January. Here’s the music that he can’t live without. 1) I’ve been obsessed with This is Me – Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) since the release of The Greatest Showman movie, and could easily list the entire album as my favourite 10 songs.
2) Blink 182’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket was the first album I purchased with my own pocket money and First Date is my absolute favourite track from one of my favourite bands of all time.
3) I have a (not so) secret crush on Harry Styles and his take on Girl Crush has been played far too many times in my office. I may have organised flights, accommodation and tickets to his Melbourne show when he performed there recently, but please don’t tell anyone that! 86
Keala Settle
4) Growing up I was obsessed with the TV series Scrubs, and basically wanted to become JD (Zach Braff) so in turn I listened to all his favourite music, including the soulful Joshua Radin and his track Closer. The Music Video is epic.
5) It couldn’t be a list of favourite songs without a track from Australia’s Ball Park Music and their hit It’s Nice To Be Alive. The name of the song really says it all; always brings me up when I need that little pick-me-up! 6) My partner Kiera always leaves the room when I start playing Jack

Johnson’s Flake as I can’t help but sing along. I may not have the same talents as Jack, so it’s probably best for me to leave the solos to him.
9) If I could list their entire
7) Every single road trip to gigs has to include at least a couple of plays of La Mar (The Ocean) by The Beautiful Girls – for someone so pasty white as myself, I sure do love to pretend I enjoy beaches and surfing.
10) It’s about to be my first dance song at my upcoming wedding, and I will no doubt ruin anyone’s love of Ed Sheeran with my two left feet – but Kiss Me is one of his greats.
8) If Zach Braff was an obsession, my love of The OC and Seth Cohen could only be considered true love. Cranking California by Phantom Planet is always going to bring back some fond memories.
discography; I would. But if I can just play a single One Direction song for the rest of my life, it’s likely to be You & I.

SONG BIRD
With a new album out, Missy Higgins is going on the road with John Butler. She tells Ara Jansen that playing live is an essential experience.

“My music is what makes me feel like I have a purpose. It’s what I need to do and what feeds my soul.”
M
any songwriters will tell you that choosing favourite songs or albums is like playing favourites among your children. It can only end in tears or with something being left out in the cold. Luckily for Missy Higgins, picking the tracks for The Special Ones – Best Of was definitely a joyful experience. The collection is the second album this year for the much-loved Australian singer-songwriter, following on from April’s Solastalgia. “The album was a way to collect together fan-favourites and a nice way to release a couple of new songs,” says Higgins from her Melbourne home. “They include songs that over the years fans have told me they have a special relationship with and which they have adopted for certain experiences in their lives. The album includes No 1 singles Scar and Steer, radio favourites Futon Couch, Ten Days, and Unashamed Desire plus ballads Everyone’s Waiting, The Special Two and gold US single Where I Stood. It also includes Arrows, written originally for Higgins’ wedding and recorded less than three days before the singer gave birth to her daughter. Then there is the previously unreleased recording of All For Believing, submitted to the Triple J Unearthed demo competition back in 2001.
With the release of the album, Higgins hit the road in January to tour with John Butler Trio, including four WA shows. “Playing live is the my favourite part of the job,” the performer says. “It all makes sense, and everything comes together. It’s where I have always felt my music in the most important and genuine way. On stage music is so fresh and alive. It changes and moves. It’s something completely original, even if it’s the same song but the opportunity to play it like it has never happened before. “The measure of a really good show is when both the audience and I feel completely inside that moment and experiencing songs in real time. That’s my goal with every show, to be completely in the song as much as possible. It’s also the place where I am the most vulnerable. “My music is what makes me feel like I have a purpose. It’s what I need to do and what feeds my soul. It’s what I was meant to do and has always been my way to process the world. If I stop doing it, I stop being who I am at my core. Ultimately, it makes me a better person.” The Special Ones – Best Of is out now. John Butler Trio and Missy Higgins play Kings Park on February 1 (sold out) and February 2. Tickets from Ticketmaster. 95

P
erth is in the middle of an accommodation bonanza for all budgets. Never before have so many rooms been available for so many price brackets. Thanks to the recent creation of so many new venues - the six-star Crown Towers and much-lauded The Treasury being the most notable - the boom isn’t over yet. With 2019 approaching, an additional 720 rooms will become available. Some 24 new hotels will open in and around Perth over the next three years, adding almost 4,000 rooms to the local market at a cost of more than $3 billion. Existing hotels like the Fraser Suites and the Parmelia Hilton right in the heart of Perth’s business district continue to offer visitors top quality accommodation and dining options. If you’re heading out of the city to the Margaret River region (a three-

and-a-half hour drive) or the newly christened Bunbury Geographe region, just two hours from the CBD, there’s a wide choice again. You can stay close to vineyards and dine like superstars on local produce (Cape Lodge) or on the beach (Abbey Beach Resort), rent a beautiful private home via Private Properties, or stay on the farm in charming Balingup Heights.
New kids on the block The Westin Perth is a very welcome addition to the hotel scene in Perth, leading the charge in a newly invigorated eastern part of the city. It’s a luxurious place to call home during your stay in the city, with the world famous ‘Heavenly Beds’ in every room, you’ll enjoy a great night’s sleep after exploring some of the most vibrant bars and cafes, literally on your
doorstep. We recommend Hadiqa for a taste of Morocco - it’s just across the street from the Westin’s terrace. An added bonus is that there’s a Bodhi J eco-luxe spa in the hotel too; paradise, just a few floors up. The Melbourne Hotel has emerged, butterfly-like, after a substantial renovation and we absolutely love its cool new vibe. From the corner of Hay and Milligan streets in the heart of Perth CBD, The Melbourne Hotel has been a part of the local character and culture since 1897. This beautiful building’s old-world splendour and charm now pays tribute to the grand hotels of yesteryear, an era when travel meant something special and guests were welcomed on a more personal level. Proud of
this heritage, yet keep up with the times with a bright, the contemporary redesign reflects the dynamic landscape of Perth. And just opened, QT Perth offers a chic new industrial approach to luxe in the heart of the city. And its rooftop bar is the hippest place in town for a cocktail as the sun goes down. Citadines St Georges Terrace has had a facelift recently and the serviced apartments are a treat for your next work trip. Wake up (and fall asleep) in the hub of the action on the CBD. King street, Northbridge and the shopping districts are just over the road in one direction while five minutes downhill is the Perth Convention Centre. And, of course, the hustle and bustle of the city’s major businesses are right next door. Choose to stay in their Studio Premier Apartment and you will be able to stretch out and enjoy a soak - along with the complimentary rubber ducky! Kick start the day with a workout nearby with complimentary access to Goodlife gym, followed by brekkie downstairs in the breakfast room at Total BS & Co Restaurant and Bar.
