WELCOME

W

elcome - you’ve arrived in one of the best - if not THE best - capital cities in the world. Perth has been our little secret for years, but now the world has woken up to the fact that the most remote capital city on earth has rather a lot to offer visitors. For a start, that coastline which the city hugs is simply stunning. From Yanchep lagoon in the north to Coogee in the south, the beaches are whiter and softer than any you’ll find in the Caribbean. And in many cases, you won’t have to fight for a spot to lay your towel. A recent investment in new hotels, venues and a loosening of licencing laws means that a night out in the city is more vibrant - and affordable - than ever. Make sure you

visit Elizabeth Quay and Yagan Square - two new attractions in the heart of the city with food and drink events running throughout the year. Plenty of world-class shows and performers add Perth to their list now, thanks to the arrival of the impressive Optus Stadium (Taylor Swift will be rocking our socks off there in October) and the Perth Arena. There are plenty of other smaller venues too where it’s possible to see plays, listen to jazz or catch an up-and-coming band. Us Western Australians (or Sandgropers as we’re known) love live sport too - you may arrive in time to catch some cricket or later in the season enjoy a game of rugby or footy. We hope you’ll enjoy reading about our city and its surrounding areas. If you have time, why not head south to Margaret River or north to Broome? Wherever you go, we hope you enjoy your stay. Griff Rhys Jones

OCTOBER / COMEDY LEGEND ON TOUR UK comedy great, actor and star of the iconic Not the Nine O’Clock News, Griff Rhys Jones is bringing his hilarious live show of stories, anecdotes and stand-up, Where Was I?, to Australian theatres this October. Griff will deliver an evening of laughter based on 40 years of travelling - through family, manhood and the world itself. He has been down rivers and up mountains – literally into Africa, out of India and across oceans in Three Men and A Boat, Mountains, Rivers and other adventures. But he has also crossed the arid wastes of the BBC. He’s navigated being 60. He’s explored the jungles of indignity. He’s turned downhill without a map in to a career. And along the way, he will address the nature of travel itself, making travel television and the truth about wanderlust and cruises. Where Was I? starring Griff Rhys Jones, Astor Theatre, October 23. Visit livenation.com.au MAGICAL CARPET RIDE Don’t miss your last chance to visit Agrabah and see one of the most

NOVEMBER / BEARD ON TOUR Larks in Transit is a compendium of travellers’ tales and the general shenanigans of twenty years as a travelling comedian, as told by muchloved Brit funny man, Bill Bailey. With musical virtuosity, surreal tangents and trademark intelligence, he tackles politics, philosophy, the pursuit of happiness, death metal, ringtonesŠ and an excruciating encounter with Paul McCartney. It’s 20 years of life as a comic filtered through what the critics calls ‘the brainiest comic of his generation’. Bill is a comedian, musician and actor most well-known for his brilliant live shows Dandelion Mind, Tinselworm, Bewilderness, Part Troll, Qualmpeddler and Limboland plus his work on television in programs such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks, QI and ABC TV’s award-winning Black Books. STAR

ATTRACTION

Square route to State’s heart Yagan Square is Perth’s new food, drink and entertainment hub.

Y

agan Square is a showcase of Western Australia in the heart of the CBD – a place that recognises and celebrates the state’s heritage, produce, environment and culture. Look closely and you’ll see that the design of Yagan Square reflects Western Australia’s natural landscape. The paved surfaces and buildings reflect the state’s unique geology and

18

showcases the diverse colours and textures of materials found across WA including natural timbers, granites and limestone. The Square’s designers collaborated with the Whadjuk traditional owners, through the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council and the Whadjuk Working Party, from the early stages of the project. Materials used at Yagan Square – from the building façades to selection of trees - have been specifically chosen to reflect Whadjuk themes, the strata of Western Australia’s geology and our unique coastal landscape.

Who was Yagan? Yagan Square is named after the Noongar warrior leader, Yagan, who played a significant role in Western Australia’s history and remains a very influential figure within the Aboriginal community. There is a strong Noongar narrative that runs through the square which incorporates stories from the Whadjuk people – the traditional owners of the land – exploring themes of place, people and landscape. These stories have influenced various elements of Yagan Square, creating a unique space that is reflective of both culture and history.

Yagan Square is fast becoming the city’s primary community, meeting and celebration place and a major tourist destination. A number of successful events have already been hosted in the space from school holiday programs featuring kids cooking classes to the Bunuru Welcome which celebrated Aboriginal dance and home grown music. One of the major attractions of Yagan Square is the Market Hall, offering a diverse range of cuisines from local business owners committed to showcasing locally sourced and produced goods. You’ll find the food of

Hawaii (Ahi Poke) next to Jersey Jack Gelato, fantastic small batch coffee from Henry Little and savoury noodles evoking the street food of Japan (Hiss & Smoke). In short, there’s something for all tastes to be found right in the heart of this new destination. With easy linkages to the train station and new underground Perth Busport, tens of thousands of people and visitors are passing through the space each day. One of the main entry points to Yagan Square, William Street Mall is a lively pedestrian thoroughfare lined with alfresco dining, linking the Perth CBD with Northbridge. Make sure you look out for the stunning digital tower and canopies which provides an unprecedented opportunity to showcase and tell the stories of Perth and WA through digital art, projections, screenings and interactive content. At the Amphitheatre ‘Meeting Place’ on the upper level there’s an open and flexible space with seating, performing and social spaces, while the Play Space (also on the upper level) offers a delightful play area for youngsters, using natural forms and colours to create a fun terrain for children of all ages and abilities. The Waterline, developed in collaboration with WA artist Jon Tarry, is a series of water feature experiences running through Yagan Square which draw upon the Perth and WA landscape and water formations and reflect the site’s past.

GETTING AROUND Right next door to the Perth Train Station and Perth Busport, Yagan Square is the perfect meeting place in the heart of the city. Walk between the city and Northbridge via William Street as this new connection links the two cultural destinations together again. For information about events at Yagan Square, visit yagansquare. com.au and follow @yagansquare on Instagram and facebook. 19

night out in Perth has changed greatly in recent years, with the city’s food and drink venues now offering customers some of the very best in the whole country. You’ll find small bars serving great tapas, high end restaurants pushing

TGI Fridays

the envelope with their innovative menus, bistros, cafes and pubs welcoming all with their relaxed vibes and delicious food. You can eat with a view of the Indian Ocean, or the Swan River, or the hills or the city. You’ll find bush tucker and French cuisine, German bratwurst and Aussie favourites, all within a few kms of each other. Perth can truly claim to be a player in terms of its food and drink offerings - so dive right in and find your new favourite hang out.

DON’T MISS . . . PINCHOS - Spanish favourite in Leederville San Sebastian may be the city with the most Michelin-starred restaurants per capita on the planet but everybody knows its pintxos bars are the real stars. Literally translating as ‘skewer’, pintxo refers to the snack-like dishes served on top of a slice of bread with a toothpick harpooned through. And now Leederville has its very own taste of San Sebastian as Pinchos Bar de Tapas starts serving Pinchos on the Bar, Monday to Thursday from 4 til 6pm. Just order any alcoholic drink and you’ll receive a free pintxo. Think rockmelon gazpacho with jamo and sweet Pedro Ximenez vinegar, tomato bread with jamon and guindilla pickle or escabeche of mussels with fennel, chickpeas and apple. It’s a taste of Andalucia, right on the city’s doorstep. 40

Pinchos, cnr Newcastle and Oxford Streets, Leederville, Happy Hour Monday to Friday from 11.30am to 12.30pm and 4.30 to 5.30pm. Open Monday to Sunday 8am to late. Visit pinchos.me

New openings TGI Fridays New York-based bar and grill, TGI Fridays, has opened its first restaurant in WA, at Westfield Carousel shopping centre in Cannington. The new restaurant will feature elements from existing TGI Friday’s model that will include comfortable booths, high bars, brightly-upholstered furniture, an inviting outdoor space as well as contemporary New Yorkinspired artwork adorning the walls.

The menu will feature more share plates and trend-led dishes with a strong focus on using quality local Australian produce. A range of beverage options will also be on offer, including TGIF’s famous cocktails and customercrafted gin and tonic options. Visit tgifridays.com.au

Bright Tank Brewing Co Bright Tank Brewing Co. was founded by husband and wife team, Mathew Moore and Gemma Sampson. The East Perth microbrewery, bar and restaurant aims to be a social space for people to enjoy quality craft beer matched with tasty innovative food. Taking the reins in the kitchen is head chef Jake Gledhill who has created a delicious seasonal share plate menu which complements the Bright Tank range of beers. A Beergustation menu will be offered once a month, and each course will be carefully crafted to match a beer. The concept of Beergustation is already popular among craft beer lovers and has gone from being offered as a one-off event to a permanent fixture in the Perth restaurant scene. BAR FLY Tiny’s Bar & Liquor Emporium By Beverly Ligman

Y

ou’ve got to love a bar that has a card which says “for good times call…” on the back of it. And if you’ve been to Tiny’s you’ll know this is a bar that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but delivers just that: good times. I’ve been to Tiny’s a few times now; once on a Friday afternoon when the bar was heaving with suits and pencil skirts, fresh off the Terrace greedily imbibing their favourite tipple after a hard day at the office. The vibe was full of that magical Friday feeling and it definitely left me wanting more. The other time I visited was on a random Tuesday, on a horrid winter’s night and there was still a good crowd at the bar. The thing with Tiny’s is it actually feels like a cosy neighbourhood bar, a bit Cheers if you will. A place where they not only remember your name, but they’ll probably also remember what you like to drink. I love that in a bar and it seems that others do too. There’s a top shelf wine list, where you can sit with a delicious small batch pinot noir or a local sauvignon blanc and contemplate life, there’s also a fantastic cocktail list and a full range of craft beers. So whatever you fancy, you’ll find it here. The bar staff are unpretentious and helpful. They actually ask if you want a top up, if you’d like to see the wine list or if you’d just like to sit a while.

50

There’s also some outstanding food to enjoy at Tiny’s – a duck liver parfait to end all duck liver parfaits and a range of casual bites that you immediately want more of. Or if you’re there for dinner or lunch you can’t go past the roast chicken with potatoes and gravy or the Shark Bay squid with miso butter. So much yes. But really, you’d expect nothing less from Paul Aaron and Michael Forde, the guys who bought you Mary Street Bakery, Cantina 663 and El Publico. To my mind Tiny’s is the bar that’s been missing on The Terrace all these years; it’s fun and flirty with a side of sophistication. There’s also Tiny’s Liquor Emporium, wine bar and bottle shop that you might have missed. And what a treat it is to go and enjoy a glass of wine in stylish surrounds, then say; “thanks, I’ll take a bottle to go.” Genius. One thing’s for sure, which ever way you slice it, Tiny’s is drinking done right. Tiny’s Bar, QV1, 250 St George’s Terrace. Enter via Milligan St, Perth. Visit tinysbar.com.au

rules that you Road rules that youRoad should know when driving in We when driving in Western Australia

Roundabouts

On entering always give way to any vehicles already in the roundabout. On multi-lane roundabouts, obey the directional arrows on the road.

Turning left

On approach, indicate left from the left lane.

Driving straight ahead

You don’t need to indicate on approach. Indicate left when you’ve passed the last exit before the one you intend to use.

Turning right or making a full turn

On approach, indicate right from the right lane. Indicate left when you’ve passed the last exit before the one you intend to use.

Uncontrolled Intersections

An uncontrolled intersection is where there is no traffic signal, stop sign, or give way sign. As a rule, at an uncontrolled intersection, always give way to the right, to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians.

Merging

Where two lanes merge into one (i.e. lane lines end) the vehicle in front has the right of way. Remember: • Always use your indicator when merging; • Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, and take turns to merge if there are long lines of merging traffic 48

JACK THE LADY Jack River AKA Holly Rankin has released her first album, Sugar Mountain. Tom de Souza finds out what inspired its deeply personal tracks. Tom de Souza: You real name is Holly Rankin, but you perform as Jack River. How did you come up with your stage name? Jack River: Yeah, so my friends and I made up pirate names when we were like 16. We would go out on the town and get up to mischief. We thought it was really funny and it kind of just stuck. In music, and for people who haven’t heard it, it’s great because it makes people think I’m a guy and it really throws them and their perception of who I am. Being a woman in music, like six years ago, when I first started to use the name it was a different world. Now it’s kind of a name under which I can do what I want and not feel trapped by my real personality. I guess it’s like a bit of an alter-ego, sometimes if I’m drunk Jack River might come out, but it’s a great way to feel limitless and not restricted by the everyday self. I don’t feel 74

restricted at all but it’s a really special place, to be able to go and become Jack River, when I’m live on stage. TdS: What’s the story behind the album’s title? JR: So the album is named after my favourite Neil Young song. That certain song is about his youth, and leaving it all behind too soon. The album to me is all about the use, and creation of this starrier, brighter youth than the one I had. It kind of feels as if I’m leaving too soon. Sugar Mountain is about the sugary youth, juxtaposed with a mountain of reality. I lost my sister when I was 14, and because of that those teenage years were quite different to what I thought they would be. Maybe I would’ve stayed a child for longer if that hadn’t have happened, but life is OK, it’s still beautiful. Everyone feels this eclectic mixture of sadness and happiness when they look back on their life. I’m

in my 20s now, and it’s like wow that sugary period of my life is over. It makes me happy, sad, and it’s full of memories. TdS: How does your song writing process work? JR: I never have an idea from the outset. It all just naturally falls out of my brain. When I feel overwhelmed with a certain emotion, or a certain chord brings it out, I have no idea, but words and a melody come into my head. It might be there the next day or week or month, and if it’s still there after a while, that’s how I discern whether I’m going to make or produce it. TdS: How do you feel now the album is about to be released? Do you feel you can close the door on your grief?

JR: This album has been written over five years. It’s my first album, and it’s taken from so many years of my life. It’s like a ‘best of’ of my life. I guess I feel relieved, I’ve held so much in for so long, so many stories and songs and words and ideas, and it’s going to be really beautiful to let them go. I feel I can finally breathe out, but it’s been a very long time so I’m looking forward to letting it go. TdS: If you could invite three people to a dinner party, who would they be? JR: Elon Musk, Grimes and Neil Young. Elon Musk is obviously one of the most fascinating people of our time; I admire his drive to create such huge incredible things and to alter society’s reality. And Grimes too because I learned today that she’s dating Elon Musk, and she’s one of my musical idols who takes a huge amount of control in everything she does. She is an amazing producer, performer, director, musician, a great creative. Neil Young because he’s my favourite musician of all time. I think he has a bit of an alien touch. He writes about space a lot, and those three altogether would make for a very interesting dinner. If had to cook, I would make my Mum’s spinach pie. Catch Jack River in Perth on September 20 and 21 at the Rosemount Hotel. 75

he Swan Valley is only 25 minutes from the centre of Perth and is WA’s oldest wine growing region. It’s where you will experience a colourful blend of heritage and culture, people, art, world-class wine, gourmet goodies and fresh produce. The Swan Valley has a number of award-winning wineries. Some offer superb alfresco and restaurant dining and you can enjoy cosy fortifiers while basking in the warmth of a log fire in winter. The wineries are open for tasting all year round. Make time to visit some the Swan Valley breweries. You’ll discover over 20 locally-made brews are on offer in the region. Small batches and a swift turnaround mean five micro brew outlets are always on the go, making a changing array of beers in a wide range of styles. These vary according to the whim of the brewer, but always include pale and dark ales, Belgian wheat beer and stout.

BIKE - You can get a list of bike hire companies from the Swan Valley Visitor Centre in Guildford. It’s recommended that you hire bicycles from the City and take the train to Guildford. The visitor centre also has information on the new Swan Valley Cycle Trail and other cycling routes. Note: In WA it is illegal to ride a bicycle without wearing a helmet.

HISTORY & CULTURE Visitors can experience Aboriginal, European, colonial, maritime, military, recreational and social heritage on Rottnest Island, which to a certain extent is reflective of the development of the state of Western Australia. The history of Rottnest Island has created a rich and significant

cultural heritage. First records of human occupation of Rottnest Island date back more than 6,500 years ago when the island was still attached to the mainland, and Aboriginal people inhabited the area. Since its initial European exploration from the 17th Century and its settlement in 1829, Rottnest Island has been through a number of stages of development and has been used for a variety of purposes.

ON THE RECORD WITH... Samantha Jade

Samantha Jade, currently hitting the road with her Best of My Love national tour, reveals the music that’s meant the most to her over the years.

of Motown classics, like I Heard it Through The Grapevine, My Girl, Stop In The Name of Love, and I learned to sing from these songs. My Girl is my fave, and my mum and I would do the Grapevine, dancing and singing it together which is an amazing memory for me. Sometimes I sing it in my set at some shows but only if I can get through it without crying, haha.

The first album I ever bought was Britney Spears - Baby One More Time. I was 13 and I had saved my pocket money so that I could get it! I was obsessed with her and her music and knew every dance move and lyric. The Big Chill is a soundtrack that my mum and dad used to always listen to. It was full 84

My best friend Zac Poor is an amazing singer, and he performs an incredible cover of Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. I didn’t know the song until he introduced it to me and now it’s one of my favourites of all-time. Ed Sheeran’s latest album is, in my opinion, a classic. I think every song is incredible and that he is one of the best songwriters of our generation. Dive is my favourite.

Unchained Melody is my favorite song of all time. It’s just a perfect song and is so nostalgic for me. I have memories of my mum and dad dancing in the lounge room, and my dad singing it to mum in her ear. Gavin’s Song by Mark Broussard is also one of my favourites. It has that incredible raw, emotional quality and it’s a really beautiful song about the love he has for his son. It always makes me cry. Ella Fitzgerald’s Dream a Little Dream of Me is why I love jazz and blues. It’s my favourite genre to listen to and I feel like I’m taken away from the world for a minute when I hear it. When I’m at home or cooking, I always put her album on. Her voice is so honest and pure. My brother Alex and I love this era and music. Ray Charles and Georgia on My Mind: This song just gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It’s perfectly written and even though Georgia is not my hometown, I do think of my hometown (Perth) and what it means to me when I listen to it.

Tommy and Christa- Thirsty Merc: My brother TJ and I used to work together with my dad and we used to listen to this song over and over again. It reminds me of that time and how much we loved it. Feels like Home by Martha Marlow: This song makes me cry every time, without a doubt. It is so beautifully written and sung. Catch Samantha Jade at The Astor Theatre on September 14. Courtyard Suite, The Melbourne Hotel

GET A ROOM The choice is yours

P

erth is in the middle of an accommodation bonanza for all budgets. Never before have so many rooms been available for so many price brackets. Thanks to the recent creation of so many new venues - the six-star Crown Towers and The Treasury being the most notable - the boom isn’t over yet. Later in 2018 an addition 720 rooms will become available. Some 24 new hotels will open in and around Perth over the next three years, adding almost 4000 rooms to the local market at a cost of more than $3 billion. Existing hotels like the elegant The Parmelia Hilton right in the heart of Perth’s business district has continued to offer visitors top quality accommodation and Cape Lodge, Margaret River

dining options. What does that mean? It means staying in the west’s capital city has never been more affordable for visitors because so much choice has pushed down prices. And that’s very good news for visitors keen to make the most of their stay in the most remote capital city on earth. If you’re heading out of the city to the Margaret River region (a three and a half hour drive) or the newly created Bunbury Geographe region, just two hours from the CBD, there’s a wide choice again. You can stay close to vineyards and dine like superstars on local produce (Cape Lodge) or on the beach (Abbey Beach Resort), rent a beautiful private home via Private Properties, or stay on the farm in charming Balingup Heights.

New kids on the block The Westin Perth is a very welcome addition to the hotel scene in Perth, leading the charge in a newly invigorated eastern part of the city. It’s a luxurious place to call home during your stay in the city, with the world famous ‘Heavenly Beds’ in every room, you’ll enjoy a great night’s sleep after exploring some of the most 102

vibrant bars and cafes, literally on your doorstep. We recommend Hadiqa for a taste of Morocco - it’s just across the street from the Westin’s terrace. An added bonus is that there’s a Bodhi J eco-luxe spa in the hotel too; paradise, just a few floors up. The Melbourne Hotel has emerged, butterfly-like, after a substantial renovation and we absolutely love it’s cool new vibe. From the corner of Hay and Milligan Streets in the heart of Perth CBD, The Melbourne Hotel has been a part of the local character and culture since 1897. This beautiful building’s old-world splendour and charm now pays tribute to the grand hotels of yesteryear, an era when travel meant something special and guests were welcomed on a more personal level. Proud of this heritage, yet keep up with the times with a bright, the contemporary redesign reflects the dynamic landscape of Perth.

And just opened, QT Perth offers a chic new industrial approach to luxe in the heart of the city. And its rooftop bar is the hippest place in town for a cocktail as the sun goes down.
