Editorial
THE IDES OF MARCH “Beware of the Ides of March” was the caution given to Julius Caesar by a soothsayer, in the world famous Shakespearean drama. This used to be a word of warning to the students over the years as well, as invariably their final examinations –to judge their academic performances – are held in this month. Things have not changed much over the years; but, on the other hand, the fear of the “Ides of March” has only increased manifold, due to voluminous syllabi and stressful and ever changing educational systems. The world has become very competitive and only the best can survive in the rate-race for excellence in the examinations and job procurement. The parents are really worried as to how their wards would perform in the final 'fire-ordeal' and hence exhort them to push ahead, with all their strength and resources. Some even go out of the way and try some pragmatic short-cuts as well to achieve the purpose. All these ultimately result in great emotional stress among the students. In a very simple way it could be said that the children are “afraid” of their examinations rather than considering them as simple tools to test their knowledge. Even just before the onset of the examination, this phobia grows in every child and by the time they appear for the exams, some of them are very much shattered nervously and emotionally. We hear many incidences of running away from home and even suicides among the students. Have we ever thought who is responsible for such a sad state of affairs? It is none other than we ourselves. We ourselves do not know what the inherent talents in our own children are. Unable to understand their likes and talents, we pressurize them to study some subjects or courses, which the world considers financially lucrative and the poor child suffers on this account. Why not we impart them education in their favorite subjects, so that they can enjoy their studies and excel in their exams? After all, every child cannot become the best MBA, the best bureaucrat, the best technologist or engineer, the best physician or surgeon, the best artist or the best scientist. Talents do vary and children shine well in their fields. Our changing educational policy is another major culprit. Very few Indian educationists and academicians are sure of what is the best for the future generations. Some insist on very high technology, while others on higher management systems. In the process of aiming at the highest, they ignore the fundamental knowledge and the basic requirement. Under these circumstances, all that the poor children can do is not allow the backlog to build up and try to master whatever they have been taught in a systematic way to avoid any last minute rush. With this store of reserve, they could keep their cool and face the examinations with confidence. Half the war is won, when the children are able to face the examinations without fear and with great self-confidence!!

SAVING PLANET By PACHU MENON
W
e should be appreciating the e f f o r t s o f environmentalists who have been laying a great stress on protecting 'the earth and heavens' issuing warnings against disturbing the ecosystem which could lead to a near catastrophe for the world. Fortunately, the general level of awareness brought about amongst the masses with regard to conservation has resulted in a lot of concern being shown for this sensitive topic. Garbage dumping and the apathy for using of biodegradable products have caused enough consternation for environmentalists. It appears that the burning issue of waste disposal will forever flummox naturalists! Another area of worry has been the various aspects of road safety. Experts don't tire of sermonizing on the virtues of driving cautiously to avoid mishaps. More than their uses for traveling, highways have featured in debates pertaining to those who utilize the tarmac surfaces. The roads could be bad or good depending on the state of the 'tarred tops' but those plying their vehicles atop contribute to the havoc played out on them. Throwing caution to the winds and rebuffing all semblance of authority by flouting every rule laid down in the books, generations of 'speed maniacs' have ensured that roads and safety have never been a concomitant factor. Public awareness campaigns to enlighten the populace on various such issues stand valued, but has to this level consciousness invoked any special response to those myriad attributes that characterize the inanities exhibited by the community in general.
Apart from the habit of smoking cigarettes, there are umpteen other foibles that discern a man's appetite for forming addictive habits. Some of these fixations are repugnant to say the least. For instance the spittle-drooling practice of chewing Paan and Ghutka, and literally painting the town red! With almost every other wall in the vicinity of the local paanwallah appearing to be decorated with garish red graffiti, one need not elaborate on the obnoxiousness of this taste. Even the footpaths are not spared the ignominy of the scarlet coat! If Spitting is a common enough custom that defies the decencies of a civic demeanor, the aftereffects of a pinch of snuff snorted in through each nostril could well be imagined! If the early-morning sights of railway commuters being greeted by scores of slumdwellers defecating along the tracks and attending to their pre-dawn ablutions are not enough, what of those who think nothing of publicly urinating at way sides at any time of the day or night, without any inhibitions and unmindful of the passers by? The public toilets and urinals erected along the routes and marketplaces have been a cause for more discomfort than the utilitarian purpose for which they are constructed. With the civic authorities turning a blind eye to the upkeep of the public amenities, their conditions are indeed pathetic! The “Sulabh Sauchalayas” fare a shade better taking into account the fact that they charge a nominal fee for the facilities. This would simply mean that the services offered without any monetary consideration would not go down well with the masses! Woe be on the residents if their housing-complexes
accom modat e bars a n d resta urant s ! Nothi n g could be more torturous than the terrible stink! Putrefying food waste adds to the squalor. It has been generally observed that the managing committees of various housing-societies, without exception, find themselves incapable of dealing with such nuisance. Then you have pranksters who go about 'demolishing' streetlights! No sooner have the authorities repaired and replaced the faulty lighting system, another stone flung in the cover of darkness puts paid to their efforts. The fondness for having areas bathing in shadows, adding gloom and murkiness to the surroundings, could be the only possible reason for these insane activities. Likewise, public taps gurgling out a continuous stream of water, without having anyone in the near neighborhood making even the remotest attempt to fill their buckets, makes one livid! Hardly are any eyebrows raised at this wastage of an understandably precious commodity. For that matter how often are leaking pipelines reported? The propensity for treating public property with utter disdain is an oddity that is a distinguishing mannerism very peculiar to us Indians. But as expatriates, the suppression of such insidious traits in foreign lands is an art that has been honed to perfection by us. A
surprising f e a t indeed! W e are tod ay livi n g in a civilized society that prides itself in upholding certain cherished values and principles. However, if pressure and counseling is still called for to wheedle and make a person sensitive to basic community obligations, do we deserve to be identified as a concerned citizenry raising voices serious ecological matters? In this context it cannot but be said that one has to first set one's house in order before contemplating drastic changes in the locality. It is just not enough to have activists crying hoarse over the rot that has been brought to our natural settings, we must genuinely realize our follies! So discussions on the 'Greenhouse effect', 'global warming' and the alarming 'depletion of the ozone layer' could, I feel, take the backseat for some time. If, as human beings, one could be so flippant towards the cleanliness of one's surroundings, I wonder if we are qualified enough to even think of saving the earth!
Chase “Your Resolution” to Success. P
ublic speaking is regarded as the basic activity through which the development of personality is achieved. Those who develop the skills of effective communication through public speaking will gain success in life. It is a continuous and long process and it has to be performed on many occasions throughout the life period. Communication can be regarded as the lifeblood of any society or organisation. If one tries to avoid facing such situation, the subject will be failing in all the activities of
life. If one has the awareness of the real situations in life, i.e. delivering a lecture facing many persons to entertain them with one's knowledge on any matter can be a difficult situation for the beginners, but proper preparation can be made to face it boldly and can win the situation. You must have thorough knowledge of the subject you are going to communicate with. Without proper knowledge what can be communicated to others? So it is essential to have knowledge about the subject matter before starting the oral
communication. One should not be afraid of communicating to others the matters of general interest through one's verbal or oral communication that is the speech . Success comes when proper preparation is made in advance after visualising all the aspects of the real situation one may pass through. You must create a strong desire to achieve your goals. Work with persistent determination to complete the task at hand to gain success. Then one has to go through practising the desired function. Practice
makes perfect and in the process, evaluation , feedback and corrections and re-practice are essential to achieve success in that activity too. Whenever you do any work, you must have faith in you about your ability to do it. You have to create confidence in you. You have to believe in yourself and do the work with positive outlook and confidence in you.

EXAMINATION STRESS W
hen my son was preparing for his public examinations (10th Std.) few years back during the studyleave, I bought for him a new bicycle, a racer with curved handle bars, thin wheels, gears, upped seat and all that. Though my wife is always with me in arriving at such decisions, my friends and even relatives questioned me, “Are you crazy ?, gone out of wits ?” But my son was happy. I had read his mind, the cause for aridity during preparation. Many a time parents and elders promise surprises, gifts and presents on condition of bringing good results. “I will buy you the bicycle if you come first like Ramesh next door”, “Don't simply crave for those skating shoes, Ramesh is having them because his parents are happy about his results, if you bring good results, we will buy you better pairs”.
We had a heart-to-heart talk with our son. I asked him about the progress of his studies and he told me he was enthused after the arrival of his choice bicycle and the good feeling invigorated him for effective concentration. He voluntarily came forward to assure that he will be using his new vehicle sparingly till the exams are over and he was really thankful to us for the good gesture. We did not ask for commitments anyway. My son came up with fairly good marks in the examination and could enter a college of high repute, in the General Category, without waiting or any extra payment/donations. After junior college, he could continue in one of the reputed Regional Engineering colleges, with moderate fees and high quality education. Students preparing for examinations are confused and loaded with advices. Take vitamins C, D etc. etc. Drink milk plenty, Sleep
seven hours continuously, take breaks and so on. However, the strain of preparing is felt by the child alone. The student should himself come to terms as to which hours are suitable for him for studies. Maybe the wee hours of the morning or the late hours after midnight. Generally, the daytime when the atmosphere is charged with noise and disturbances are not preferred by students preparing for examinations. Regular discussions on studies, doubts with classmates and teachers personally or on phone are welcome. The discussions may extend to platitudes but a responsible student knows the value of time and can limit such wastes. As far as food intake is concerned, eat whatever you like. However, ensure that you do not overeat and upset your bowels. A little involvement by parents / caretakers are necessary here, for students at times
overstressed with studies may resort to going on a binge. Reading and working on studies should be limited to maximum of one hour at a time. After this, the student should stretch, take a long walk away from the studyplace, and breathe fresh air, talk to friends, listen to music, or engage in games for a little while, say fifteen to twenty minutes. Some students do prefer to study after midnight when the sound pollution is comparatively low and interference from elders will be minimal. Parents /elders should keep a watch and ensure the fairness on those leaving home at odd hours for group study purpose. Above all, the student should always be kept in high spirits and winning in mood, hoping for the best and prepared to face the worst. Parents, teachers and other elders have an important role in maintaining such moods.

eiki is a healing Practice that originated in Asian continent. The word Reiki is derived from two word: Rei means Universal and ki means life energy. Current Reiki practice can be traced to the spiritual teachings of Grand Master "Mikao Usui" in the early 20th Century. Usui's teaching included meditative technique and healing practice. One of the Usui's student Chujiro Hayashi, who further uplifted the healing practice placing less emphasis on the meditative technique. Independent Reiki healer named "Hawayo Takata" learned Reiki from Hayashi and introduced it to western cultures in the late 1930's. Reiki is also part of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).
