Arjuna says... O Krsna I wish to know about prakriti and purusha, the field of activity, the knower of that field, knowledge and that which is to be known. The Lord says... This body is the field of activity. One who knows this field is called the knower of the field. Understand that I am the knower of all fields. Understanding of the field and its knower is actual knowledge. This is my opinion. Now please pay attention to my brief description about the field, what it constitutes, it changes, its origins, as well as its knower and its influence. The knowledge of the field of activity and the knower of the field has been sung by various Sages in the sacred Vedic writings, and particularly in the Brahma-sutras complete with reason and logic. The great elements, egoism, intellect, the unmanifest, the ten senses and the mind, the five sense objects, desire, hatred, happiness, sorrow, the aggregate and conviction-in brief are considered to be the field and its variations. Humility, unpretentiousness, nonviolence, patience, simplicity, service to Guru, cleanliness, persistence, self-restraint, renunciation of sense objects, absence of egoism, perception of birth, death, old age and disease, detachment, freedom from the entanglement of family life, even-mindedness of mind with regard to that which is desirable and undesirable, unswerving devotion to me, residing in secluded places, detachment from social gatherings, steadiness in selfrealisation, keeping in sight the purpose of philosophy-this is said to be knowledge. Ignorance is that which is contrary to this. I shall clearly explain that which is to be known, understanding which one attains the nectar of immortality. Brahman, which is beginingless and which is ruled by me, it is beyond cause and effect. Everywhere are his hands, legs, eyes, heads, ears and faces. In this way, he exists everywhere, pervading all. He is the source of all senses though he is free from all senses. He is unattached, yet he supports all beings, he is master of sensory modes, though he transcends all sensory modes. The Supreme Lord is outside and inside all beings. He is moving and he is stationary. He is subtle and beyond mental and sensory comprehension; He is far, yet he is near. Though he appears divided among living beings, he is undivided. He is the creator of all and the destroyer of all. He is the supreme source of all lights and is beyond darkness. He is knowledge, the object of knowledge and the goal of knowledge. He is situated in everyone’s heart. I have thus described the field of activities, knowledge and the object of knowledge. The devotees who understand this will attain me. Know that both prakriti (material nature) and purusha (living entities) are without beginning and their transformations and the modes of matter arise from material nature. Prakriti is said to be the heritage of material causes and effects while purusha is said to be the cause of the actual experiences of enjoyment and suffering. The purusha experiences qualities born of material nature, enjoying the three modes of nature. Association with these qualities leads one to good and evil. The purusha in this body who oversees and protects one is the supreme controller and enjoyer and is called the Supersoul. One who understands the material nature, the living entity and the interaction of the modes of nature will be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Some perceive the Self within the Self through meditation, others through the gathering of knowledge and still others through not expecting results of fruitive actions. Even those who are not familiar with spiritual knowledge but have begun worship of the Supreme Lord by hearing about it from others also transcend death. Realise that all that you see in existence, the moving and the non-moving is a result of the combination of the field of activities and the knower of the field. Those who realise the Supreme God residing in all beings and understanding that neither the soul nor the Supersoul is destructible truly see’s. One who sees the Supersoul everywhere does not degrade oneself by the mind. And thus attains a transcendental state of being. One, who realises that all actions are not carried out by the soul but by material nature, truly sees. When one sees different identities and different material bodies arise from a single source, material nature, one attains Brahman. This imperishable Supreme Soul is transcendental; it is beginingless and is beyond the influence of the modes of material nature. Even though it is in touch with the material body, the soul neither acts nor gets entangled. The sky, because of

its subtle nature does not mix with anything, though it is all pervading. Similarly the soul does not mix with the body, though situated in it. Like the sun that illuminates the entire universe, the living entity in the body illuminates the consciousness. Those who understand, through the eyes of knowledge, the difference between the field and the knower of the field, know the means to be free from material nature attain the supreme goal. O Satguru Swami Teoonram, you are our Lord Krishna!!! We pray to you Sai that we become a disciple like Arjuna so that we comprehend and imbibe the treasure of knowledge in our lives that you have bestowed on us. Reverence in your Holy feet!
