TOWNHALL

CONCEPT DESIGN | EUROPEAN FINE DINE LOWER PAREL, MUMBAI | 2020

TOWNHALL x WES ANDERSON Townhall is a luxury asian cuisine restaurant based in Mumbai & Delhi. Cuisine curated by chef Augusto Cabrera is imagined with a redesigned spatial setting. American film maker Wes Anderson, director of movies like ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ & ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ to name a few is the core inspiration of the space. The fantasy like world created by Wes is a reflection of the detailed stories woven through spaces in his movies. Bringing this understanding of creating elaborate experiences to culminate an extraordinary, quirky european fine dine experience.

FRAMED SPACES Bringing the understanding of a Wes Anderson directed frame and reinterpreting the style of creating long frames, the design experience is unique to each perspective. Each viewer has a different story boarded expereince. We envisioned the spaces to feel like being drawn into different movie sets from Wes Anderson. The large open spaces are allowed to create a wider angle of perspective giving a European Ball Room feel to the space.

SPATIAL BRANDING & ANCILLIARY The spatial language of Townhall comes from Eastern Europe, while a more contemporary material palette is added to the spaces. We bring a quirky, eye catching design language to the brand, to create excitement and allow the curious viewer to imagine storyboards in the space. The ancillary Patisserie “Mendl’s” is a European sweet delicacy pop up shop, bringing a layer of engagement and excitement to the European Fine Dine experience.

DELARA

SPATIAL BRANDING | BOUTIQUE HOSPITALITY PARSI COLONY, MUMBAI | 2019

CAFE CONCEPT SKETCH

DELARA Delara is a exclusive Parsi members club, amidst the Parsi Colony, Mumbai. Designed to rejoice the Parsi boutique luxury experiences. Delara brings back the Art Deco style cafe open for the Parsi cuisine enthusiasts in the city. It is a conscious drive to celebrate the cultural significance of the Parsi community from the city and allow the coming generations to open a dialog with the vast heritage. Club Delara brings a weekend stay to expand the experience of living in one the heritage Art Deco sites, and help in creating a cultural connect. Our goal was to design a brand with the spaces and regenerate income for the client host living at Rustom Mansion.

OBJECTIVES Create a strong spatial brand for Club Delara, Cafe and, Suite. Develop a cohesive brand to generate income with the Art Deco built structure and Parsi Co-Living.

SITE : RUSTOM MANSION, PARSI COLONY, MATUNGA, MUMBAI.

RESEARCH

CONCEPT

The core reasoning for the research was to develop a robust connection with the trends, beliefs, cultural significance and insights into the parsi community & interpersonal relations. This helped develop a better sensitivity in designing the spaces at Delara.

We strongly believe in celebrating the Parsi culture and the Art Deco Era. Highlighting a new merging of space, time and people. Experiences slow paced and relaxing in the contrasting fast moving landscape of Mumbai.

REGENERATIVE STRATEGIES The important part in designing Delara was to understand the functioning of the space and user experience. Delara is incorporated with a primary brief of regenerating income from the spaces from an audience visiting for an experience. Delara is divided into three different spaces i.e Club, Cafe & Suite. With the incorporation of multipurpose spaces at Delara Cafe it expands the use of space in a diverse pattern, promising more usability and regenarative income.

COLOUR HIERARCHY The palette of Delara is a representation of soft hues and pastels to bring a soothing essence. The audience of club members are senior citizens and therefore a palette with subtle contrasts to reduce color reflectivity and allow layering of surfaces with ease. Art Deco movement imagined with a contemporary visual palette keeping the brand language transitional from the past and future. This creates a sense of luxury to witness the coming together of heritage & design.

BRANDING DESIGN The design language of Delara is a merging of the Parsi heritage and contemporary design. The brand values narrate a significant importance of celebrating the heritage and co-living. The designs and floral motifs signify gratitude towards the past and, acceptance with the coming youth. We wanted to work with art deco motifs and highlight the product engaging the details of packaging. The subtle colors are seen throughout the spatial setting connecting the brand values and the spaces at Club Delara.

THE STORY OF THE SKETCH DESIGN RESEARCH | DESIGN THESIS | 2021

ABSTRACT In the world of designed surroundings, climate, food and clothing, a designer’s contribution is considered of paramount importance. What is central to the designer’s act of creation? In this ecosystem of creative professions, how does a creative build an intimate relationship with his creation? How does one know how to begin this narrative of designing? Through a retrospective lens, ‘Verve’ aims to unfold the nuances of a design process through varied lateral and paralled studies included. The incentive to understand a creative process began from a personal obsession to understand one’s relationship with the creative process. The thesis studies writings, drawings and the creative process of distinguished individuals from the field of design to form a cohesive understanding about the sanctity of an informed yet fluid process. In this journey the role of a sketch serves as an anchor point to start, pause or reflect thus making it a crucial element in the process of designing. ‘Verve’ aims to decipher layers in the process of any creative inividuals work and arrive at an attempt to build an understanding. The unscripted conversations with the creatives allowed for thoughtful takes and personal discussions which has been given a crisp understanding of this topic. Through the medium of documentation, it looks at varied perspectives right from casual explorations of everyday life in any creative individual’s life to indepth research on designers and their design. Often with a prescriptive approach to design that is used it over and over again, the a tendency to only think and problem-solve for the step you are in, but to make it a story that can be woven and experienced in its full glory one needs to often have tangible and intangibles around, understood in a non baised manner. This thesis is also an humble attempt to navigate through the known and unknown territories in the design process. In these navigations of the territories of design the premise is central to design drawings focusing the drawing as a medium to communicate the ideas. A large province of the thesis constitutes the use of freehand drawing which is the most direct and intuitive means to visually represent as mediums of thinking, expressing, and storytelling. The understandings of using a drawing free from the vocabulary of known and using uniquely for seeing and translating thoughts into spaces.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

INNOVATION TRUST

Date :- 13th July 2021

To whomsoever it may concern It is with great pleasure and immense pride that I write this letter of recommendation for my student, Mr. Prem Jadhav, who recently graduated from ISDI School of Design and Innovation in curricular collaboration with Parsons School of Design. I have known Prem for the last four years in my capacity as his faculty, his Capstone guide and as the Associate Program Director of the Interior Design Program at ISDI and can proudly say that he has grown to be a fine designer with some exemplary skills. It is also noteworthy to mention that despite the challenging year his graduation was, he has always been calm and have patiently worked on his courses, being equally mindful and empathetic at every point in this Academic journey. He has shown consistent efforts since his first year at ISDI and have been respectful of all her peers, faculty and staff at ISDI. Prem has always shown immense respect for the design process which was evident in his Capstone journey. He made sure to cover all possible and relevant grounds in research and analysis before embarking on to the design stages. His conceptual skills are well articulated and represented. Prem has always gracefully accepted feedback from his peers and faculty, and have incorporated them during his iterative processes. His curious nature has also helped him hone his critical thinking skills in multidisciplinary creative domains. Over the years, Prem has consistently exhibited skills of a matured designer with keen interest in creative problem solving and execution of the projects. His positive approach towards everything is clearly reflected in his work. He has also displayed excellent collaborative and leadership skills in the group projects undertaken in his academic journey here at ISDI. I wish Prem great success in all his future endeavours. He will definitely leave a mark wherever he goes and I am happy to add my voice of support

Sincerely

Divya Vijaychandran divya@isdi.in Associate Program Director – Interior Design (School of Built Environments) ISDI School of Design and Innovation in Curricular Collaboration with Parsons School of Design
