“The Impact the Recession has made on our Generation’s Journey to Higher Education” Fantasia Mills
The recession has had an immense impact on many American families, let alone the world. Many young adults that have had every intention on striving for the best are now experiencing an untimely delay in succeeding in the near future, after high school. This has caused an intense burden and stress on teens and the family members who take care of them. College costs are increasing despite the recession. What is Freedom? Frantzy Phillipe
Black History month celebrates the accomplishments of our ancestors and our history. It’s been many decades since we gained our freedom from enslavement. My job at this moment is to bring perspective to this event that was abolition and brings its consequences forward in the 21 century. Two questions come up as we bring a critical perspective to the exact nature in which we gained freedom: what is freedom and what are its consequences. st
Freedom always results in consequences. For example, after slavery was abolished and citizenship was granted to African Americans, the southern government subjugated freed men and women to situations that were sometimes even worse than slavery. Although we were theoretically given equal political protection, we lacked the economic opportunities we needed to become economically viable. This resulted in a gap in our economic standing in the twenty-first century. The way in which freedom was granted to African Americans resulted in psychological
Our people need to be reminded of what it took for them to get to where we are today. Many people sacrificed to get us this far. We must not forget.
consequences. For example, it seems that every group of people that were once oppressed turns and oppresses a group of people themselves. For example, the colonists who were freed from the grip of the British Crown discriminated against African Americans for many decades. Also, one can look at the Zionist Hebrews, who were freed from many years of discrimination under the Nazis, who later on discriminated and drove the people of Gaza from their homeland. The oppressed also end up having a degree of self-hate to deal with in our continuous struggle toward true freedom. We, African-Americans, see this in the damage we do to ourselves as a result of our self-hate. Gangs, drug abuse, alcoholism and a high rate of our men incarcerated are just some of the problems plaguing us as a result of our hate for ourselves. We must stand up to our history and face up to the reality of our freedom. It is not enough to be free; we must enrich our freedom with the spirit of our hard work and integrity.
Progress has been made countless times and many more stories like those of President Barack Obama, Hiram Revels and Gen. Colin Powell are being written in history. The blood of many of our ancestors has been shed and we cannot let their sacrifices be in vain.

Healthy Eating Tips for the Busy College Student ◊ Eat a good breakfast. Studies show that skipping breakfast detracts from scholastic achievement. When there isn't
time to sit down and enjoy your morning meal, grab a bagel, piece of fruit, and some juice. Most of these items can be easily stored in your dorm room. ◊ If you must eat fast foods, choose wisely. Choose pizza with half the cheese, a regular size roast beef sandwich,
baked potato, or green salad with reduced calorie dressing. Limit high fat offering like French fries, fried chicken or fish sandwiches and watch out for salad dressing. ◊ Keep healthful snacks on hand so if hunger strikes during a late night study session, you won't be tempted by vending
machine candy, chips, or ice cream. Possibilities include fresh or dried fruit, pretzels, unbuttered popcorn, rice cakes or whole wheat cracker. If you have a refrigerator, consider raw vegetables with low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese dip. ◊ The dining hall salad bar can be either an asset or a detriment to you diet depending on how you choose from it. Of
course, leafy greens, raw vegetable and fresh fruit are beneficial. But if you choose lot of creamy dressing, bacon bit, and mayonnaise based salads, the calories and fat may equal or even exceed those of a burger and fries. ◊ Drink lots of water. Your body needs at least eight glasses a day, and if you exercise vigorously, you may need more.
To remind yourself, carry a water bottle along to class and keep it handy during late night study sessions.

Tips For Teens By Kisra Wong Valentine’s Day Special Staying In • Make a meal out of red foods. Red velvet cake would be a great example. If you don’t know how to make red velvet cake there’s always red velvet cake mix. Also– food coloring is very inexpensive and you can put it in just about anything. • Heart Shapes– you and your honey and can get together and make heart shaped foods such as cookies which are easy to mold into any shape. Make things more fun and use nice, clean hands instead of cookie cutters. Hand shaping your cookies gives you more time cooking together. • The ol’ dinner and a movie never fails. Rent or buy a new movie that you two can both sit and watch.
A Night Out • If you’re planning on going to see a movie, ‘Dear John’ is great for the occasion. • Instead of flowers like roses which are costly, a less expensive alternative would be a bouquet of balloons with little Valentine’s Day treats inside. This adds fun the date as well as afterwards because instead of putting balloons in water like you would flowers, you can pop the balloons and eat the candies inside it. • Treat yourselves to gourmet cupcakes at ‘Crumbs’ where you can choose from a wide and rare variety of colors and flavors.

Is It Child Abduction??????
Article written by: Marc Lacey February 4, Summary written by Maya Ennis
Since the earthquake Haiti has faced many losses: homes, loved ones, and even their jail cells. It has also lost a sense of order in their communities which has resulted in many incidents of crime; and, one of those crimes involves US citizens. This was an accidental crime committed through an act of faith and kindness. A group of ten Baptist missionaries from Idaho were charged with child abduction while they tried to bring thirty-three Haitian children to the Dominican Republic. Since last Friday the ten Americans have been detained on Haitian land. They

serious charge, which would be trafficking. Although
Ms Silby, a member of the church who had organized the trip for the detained, told the prosecutor “We simply wanted to help the children …we petition the court not only for our freedom, but also for our ability to continue to help.” The Americans were taking the children to the Dominican Republic because there they had leased a building and would start an orphanage. They believed that “the Haitian children would stay in a loving Christian homelike environment” and the children would also be able to be adopted from many adoption agencies in America.
they are not charged with the most serious of charges they may still receive a fifteen-year sentence if the ruling is not in their favor. There will be a threemonth period for the Haitian officials to decide. Some of the Haitian children still had at least one living parent and because of this the prosecutor still believes it can be considered as child abduction. One expert believes that by pursuing this case the Haitian officials are trying to make a point about the issue of international child abduction. They feel that it is a grave problem and do not want to appear as if they support it. Throughout all of the commotion the ten missionaries held on to their faith and often times found themselves praying. On the turnoutof the case
Ms Silby said “We’re just trusting God for a positive outcome.”
Vitamin C Power
Vitamin C Power by Ekizia Edwards Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for our basic chemical functions. Humans must take in vitamin C or ascorbic acid because we cannot produce them ourselves. You can ingest vitamin C by eating raw fruits and vegetables as a daily nutriment. Our bodies use vitamin C to complete different chemical reactions, like providing energy, and sending information to neurons. Vitamin C helps produce norepinephrine that carries messages around the nervous system and it is an antioxidant, which can help create healthy tissue in the body. Many things in the body such as bone, blood vessels, ligaments, and cartilage needs vitamin C to help with its manufacture. So it’s important to take vitamin c daily. Vitamin C also helps lower cholesterol and can produce more iron. Since vitamin C is water-soluble,
meaning that vitamin C can dissolve in water, fresh raw fruits and vegetables are our best natural source. The amount of vitamin C will decrease when you cook or heat up vegetables. Steamed and raw vegetables both retain all their vitamins and minerals more than vegetables that are boiled. When people boil vegetables, they cook them for a certain amount of time and then the water drains away most of the nutrients as well. A short period of time that vegetables are steamed allows it to retain most of its vitamins and minerals. The recommended daily allowance for vitamin C is around 80 mg, depending on your age and gender. So take care of your business and make sure to ingest as much Vitamin C as possible.
Remember, you need energy to succeed and
