A Woman’s Worth "One needs only one look at a woman’s figure to discover that she does not intend to reform either mentally or physically. She pays the debt of life not by what she does but by what she suffers—by the pain of bearing a child, caring for the child, and by incapacity to the opposite sex, to whom she should be a patient and cheerful companion. The greatest sorrows and joys or great exhibition of strength are not assigned to her; her life should flow more quietly, more gently, and less obtrusive than man’s, without her being essentially happier or unhappier." ….Continued on page 2

Who Is Shirley Chisholm? Did you know that President Barack Obama was not the first black By Kisra Wong person to run for president? Did you also know that Senator Hilary Clinton was not the first female to run for president? Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm was the first woman and colored person to pave the path for both of these 2009 presidential candidates. She was a Congresswoman, representing York's 12th Congressional District seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1968, she became the first black woman elected to congress. January 25, 1972, she became the first major-party black candidate for the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Later on in the century, Rev. Jesse Jackson also tried to run for president of the United States. He referred to himself as the first African American to run for president overlooking the fact that Chisholm had earlier attempted this. One can subsequently conclude that he disregarded Chisholm as a worthy opponent, enough to be acknowledged. Perhaps the reason for this was her gender, the fact that she was a woman validated Jackson’s reason for disregarding her actions and achievements. Many today, tend to forget about Shirley Chisholm’s actions and her achievements. She was a congress woman that represented New York. She is of Bajan and Cuban descent. Chisholm is a strong black woman who helped to create a pathway for young girls today and like everyone, she deserves credit where it is due.

Acne Care Information ]\ By Fantasia Mills

Hormonal imbalance is the primary cause of acne. This can effectively be addressed by a dermatologist who specializes in hormonal imbalances. This procedure consists of tests that identify the specific hormone that causes the acne problem. The treatment varies from patient to patient with the purpose of lowering the testosterone level. This can usually be resolved by injections or even oral medications which in turn solves the acne problem. Acne care information as of January 2008 states that regulation of fats in the diet can help in managing acne. There are some foods included in the normal diet that can cause skin breakouts or acne because they can make the skin oily. Foods such as dairy products and meat are the ones that are rich in saturated fat. It won’t be necessary to take them away from your daily diet because saturated fats are needed to meet the energy requirements of your body. It is only VERY important to eat within certain limits that cannot harm your acne-prone skin.

An acne-prone skin should be cleansed with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser or gentle antibacterial facial wash. There are various hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested products available in the market which can be good choices. However, for individuals with severe acne problems, it is best to go to a dermatologist ASAP and get as much advice when it comes to proper skin cleansing. It is also advised that people with acne-prone skin avoid soaps that are no good for your skin and cause dryness as well as skin formulas that contain acid.It is important to remember to use lukewarm water when rinsing your skin and to NEVER use scrubs. Scrubbing can cause massive injury to the sensitive layers of the skin and can cause aggravation and add on to the problem. It also worsens the condition of your skin. Gentle

moisturizers are very helpful for excessive skin dryness. It is also important to use sunscreens if your skin is sensitive to the sun or if you have a skin disorder the sun made worse by with the sun. Having said all this, please remember, that no matter Aries Marchextreme 21 - April contact 19

the New GeNeratioN By Mark Mccord

As we continuously move from decade to decade, music is constantly changing. Music reflects the views of our times. For example, the 90’s reflected the views of rappers such as Biggie Smalls, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Eminem, and Dr.Dre. In our present time, people now admire rappers such as Drake, Kid Cudi, and Asher Roth. This shows a big transition in music. These people are drastically creating a new music culture which helps to give people a different perspective in contrast with perspectives from the past. The rappers in the 90’s constantly rapped about gang violence and hopes for a better future for the upcoming generation. I would like to refer to a song called “Change Gone Come” by Charles Hamilton, Asher Roth, and B.o.B which has an overall meaning that “this is way more than rap”; this means that the music is more than music, it is about our culture. This transition in music is amazing in that it shows that rappers now are fulfilling the dreams of the rappers in the past. This shows that some issues in our community are the same today as they were in the Nineties. Also, what is currently happening in the music industry is both positive and negative based upon perspectives of different people. Common is a great rapper whose lyrics represent his desire to teach “truth” to our people; and his message is always meant to uplift us. A rapper is extremely negative in his lyrics is DMX: a skilled lyricist who “keeps it real” and raps about the “reality on the streets”.

I realized that music is very important to people’s lives, and it’s important that rappers can connect to their fans based on the lyrics they produce. This is how music is in the present, but as time moves on, a new generation will hopefully carry out the same ideas from rappers they looked up to. Eventually, this will help to open new doors, opportunities, and possibilities to others depending on the outcome of the new generation. A perfect example of this change in music shows in the group Black Violin. These two African-American men achieved success because they created the ultimate synergy between classical and Hip-Hop music and with it an incredible opportunity to reach young children. Today, they give us the history of music by selecting music from different genres and twist it with the flare of hip hop. These violinists got the opportunity to perform with music entertainers such as P. Diddy, Alicia Keys, and have been featured on Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Lil Kim, and Brooke Hogan's albums. Black Violin along with other positive rappers in the music industry gives future generations a brighter outlook on the world and what it has to offer.
