I love books! That statement deserves a line by itself. It is a declaration that fills me with awe and excitement. Going to the library is my favorite thing to do. Spending the afternoon perusing the titles in my neighborhood bookstore is both exhilarating and relaxing for me. My bookshelves at home contains some interesting books, not hardcover, not distributed by a famous publishing giant, there’s no name on the front cover they’re my journals. I love the glimpses into the younger me. My writings remind me of where I’ve been, how I’ve overcome and my achievements. I revisit places and moods and see the silly me. Sure, some of the things in there are kind of yucky and weird but my writings are valuable. Sometimes it’s hard to keep a journal on a regular basis. Days weeks and months go by without an entry as it can be hard and sometimes time consuming to settle down and chronicle a day in this life. Even more difficult if you think nothing interesting has happened. I have various styles of journaling –The “today I did this” –style diary, just a rambling of my day and experiences, or the dream journal in which I record what I remember of my dream because as you know we usually forget up to 90 percent of last night’s dream within your first hour of being awake. I also have a gratitude journal where I write all the things I am thankful for – parents, family, job and even just listing all my blessings. Or the quote journal which I fill with quotes that has inspired me. I usually date the quote by the day I found it, how it makes me feel, and my interpretation of it. If you’ve tried journaling before, but never managed to fill a whole notebook, don’t give up. It’s an ongoing process. The point is to get part of yourself down on paper, even if you think your life isn’t exciting. Trust me: your future self will thank you. So are you ready to start? Great! So on a piece of paper, write your answers to this question, "Which 3 words best describe how you are feeling right now?" When you are done writing, you have just created your own journal. Congratulations!! To encourage you on your way to journaling I am committed to give journals to the first 40 students who email me at shurley@mec.cuny.edu. Remember to relax and have fun, laugh! Journal writing is its own reward. Once you get started, your journal will become a good friend. It's available whenever you need it. Day, night, home, in the car, or in a coffee shop. It's a 24/7 friend and that is always available.

Farewell my lovelies, You’re leaving for your next adventure! I’m sad to see you go but I’m ready to release you to climb to new heights, chart new roads and write your page of history. I believe in you. Believe in yourself. Anything is possible. “Anything is possible” and “Failure is not an option”. We live, breathe and embodied these words. We persevered. We worked hard, very hard, on everything from academics to interpersonal relationships to life strategies to proper etiquette, and now you are set to graduate from high school. Some of you are the first in your family to do so, you are deserving of much praise and celebration. My message to you going forward is a simple one—while life is about to get much more difficult but you can handle it. And always remember- Anything is possible. College is tough, and you'll encounter all sorts of challenges along the way— academically, socially, financially, even emotionally. You have the tools you need to succeed. Hey, you made it this far, right? Remember when you thought high school was just too much stuff? Well you made it through that stuff and you can make it through the stuff ahead. You were made with the tools necessary to succeed and you can overcome all challenges if you wholeheartedly commit yourself to your studies. Seek help- get tutoring, ask the professor, join study groups Time Management- academics first, party later  You are an agent for change- in this world, and you cannot let others—adults, most especially—inhibit you. Stay healthy/Eat right

Don’t be a statistic; be determined to make it through your freshman year -- and beyond Write your own "I Have a Dream" speech. Have fun while learning; get the most out of your college experience. I believe in you. Believe in yourself. Anything is possible.

Grace and Peace,

Suzanne Hurley “This is just the beginning. Enjoy every moment you are given.”

Sabira Hemphill-Garcia “Congratulations to all of you on all your hard work. You guys are amazing and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. I am very, very proud of you!”

Ydhelca Perez

“Enjoy this transition period between adolescence and adulthood. It’s the only time when you can act like an adult without the responsibility of adulthood.”

Cindy Harvey-Barrett “Keep your head in the books, not the TV, DVD, IPod, YouTube, Facebook, etc. But have fun!!!”

Pamela Judkins

“Congratulations to the Graduating Prep for Success Class, It is has been my profound pleasure to have worked with you this past year. I can honestly say all of you have enriched not only my professional life, but my personal life as well. I cannot tell you the number of times I have spoken to many of you about situations you were going through that taught me not only about life, but about the value of hope, faith and personal strength. Many of you have told me thank you for the few words of advice I have been able to give to you about various problems you were going through, but I would like to say thank you as well. I have learned from your successes this year that wisdom belongs as much to the young as it does to the old. The very fact that you have made it this far shows that nothing in this world can stop you from achieving your dreams. There is a power to your life that has already shown itself and gotten you to this point of victory. Continue to rely on this power, this power of your heart, your spirit and your mind. Also, continue to believe in your dreams and always stay true to yourselves. My love and my best wishes for you in all your future endeavors.”

Sean Anderson “To wonderful and extremely blessed talented students, you’ve reached a point in your life where you have just opened your wings to fly. There are so many trees, hills, mountains to land on and if you use metal wings you can further your vertical mobility to the moon and stars. Remember your past where your parents have brought you up from and God has sustained you through. Conquer the future where God will definitely lead you to.”

Leon Caddle
