A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO
Dear Friends, At Prep for Prep, we support the personal, educational, and professional trajectories of all of our students. Through Prep’s academic preparation, leadership development, and social-emotional support, students are poised to excel in their independent schools and colleges and in their professional endeavors. But our students don’t achieve these accomplishments alone. They have a community supporting them — one that includes their families and friends, Prep teachers, advisors, staff, classmates, and alumni who are all walking beside them on this journey. And they aren’t the only beneficiaries of their hard work. Their accomplishments positively impact their families, fellow alumni, the companies they work for, and the communities in which they live. It is in that spirit that we introduced Prep for Prep’s new tagline — Success Is Better Shared — this fall. It is also the theme of this year’s Annual Report. Within these pages you will learn how Nancy Reyes McLaughlin (IX/Trinity ’93, Harvard ’97) used her position as president of TBWA\ Chiat\Day’s New York Office (she’s now CEO, The Americas for BBDO) to facilitate a pro bono partnership between the ad agency and Prep to amplify our admissions outreach. It was from this relationship that the Success Is Better Shared tagline was born. Thank you, Nancy! You will also learn how Jessica Johnson-Cope (VIII/Hewitt ’92, Northwestern ’96) has used her Prep experience to elevate her family business, Johnson Security Bureau, Inc., and how Diógenes Brito (XXIII/Collegiate ’07, Stanford ’11) MA, Georgia Tech ’14 has harnessed his professional success to establish a philanthropic relationship between Prep and creative ops system Air, where he is a Strategic Design Advisor. And you’ll read about how Prep alums Chijioge Nwogu (P9 XV/ Choate ’06, Brown ’10) MBA, UNC Chapel Hill ’18, Ian Allen (XXII/Browning ’06, Brown ’10), and Errol King (P9 XI/Kent ‘02, CUNY Lehman) have leveraged the power of Prep to collaborate on GameFlo, a Black-owned gaming company known for its PickUp Basketball card game. These are just a few examples of how success is shared in the Prep for Prep Community. As a member of this community, you are an integral part of this success. Whether through a generous financial contribution or by volunteering your time or experience to one of our programs, you have a role in the achievements of our students — and our organization. This Annual Report is a tribute to all that we’ve achieved during the past fiscal year. With appreciation,
Ruth Jurgensen

MEETING THE MOMENT Prep for Prep remains committed to expanding opportunities for our community members. In the 2022–2023 fiscal year, programs like Prep on the Issues returned with renewed vigor and the 2023 Lilac Ball hit a new milestone. We introduced a new initiative, the Leadership in Education and Enrichment Fund, for our students that helps support their interests and encourages curiosity. Continue reading to discover how we elevated the Prep Journey in the last fiscal year. PREP ON THE ISSUES After a three-year hiatus, Prep for Prep’s Prep on the Issues returned Thursday, November 10, 2022, with a conversation featuring special guest Damian Williams, the first Black US attorney for the Southern District of New York. Pang Lee (IX/Allen-Stevenson ’90, Exeter ’93, MIT ’97) JD, Penn ’03 recommended Damian, remarking he “would be a great person to speak about opportunities in public service and law.” Damian was already familiar with Prep as he is married to Jennifer Wynn (XVIII/Trinity ’02, Harvard ’06) MA, CUNY Hunter College ’11; MBA, NYU ’14. Prep on the Issues brings together alumni, students, supporters, and friends to hear from experts on topics of pressing interest to our community. The event, held at Chelsea Factory, began with introductory
remarks from Gigi Parris (XVI/Fay ’96, Deerfield ’99, Harvard ’03) JD, Univ. of Virginia ’06, a judge in the New York State Unified Court System. The program proceeded with a lively discussion with Damian led by Esther Cajuste (P9 XI/Kent ’02, Boston College ’06) JD, American Univ. ’11, Principal Law Clerk in the New York State Unified Court System. Damian reflected on how his identity as a Black man impacted his upbringing, higher education experience, and law career. Other topics included the global pandemic and the political uneasiness of the last presidential administration, ways constituents can address economic disparity within their district, and advice for students of color interested in public policy or a career as a prosecutor.
ALUMNI AFFINITY GROUPS Prep for Prep’s alumni affinity groups are an integral part of staying connected within the Prep Community. Prep in Arts has been connecting alums through a shared interest in creativity. Derrick Biney-Amissah (VI/Trinity ’90, Georgetown ’95) MFA, Pratt ’00 and David Rampersad (XXIX/Dalton ’13, Gettysburg ’17) invited alums to view incredible galleries from New York City and all the way to Dia Beacon in upstate New York. Prep in Arts has also served as a support network for artists within the Prep Community. Gathering to view new works by Miguel Payano, Jr. (XIV/Fay ’95, St. Paul’s ’98, Williams College ’03) MFA, ’08 at the Charles Moffett Gallery is another example of how Prep’s alumni show up for one another! The Prep Wellness Group provides spaces for intentional reflection and building healthy habits. In December 2022, alumni members joined registered yoga teachers Julie
Novick-Lederer (XXXI) and Alejandro Desince (XXX) for a virtual session of mindfulness and relaxation. For more opportunities to connect with like-minded alumni, visit prepforprep.org/alumni/connect.
2023 LILAC BALL
LAUNCH OF LEEF
Prep for Prep’s 2023 Lilac Ball celebrated the high school graduating class of 2023 and Lilac Ball Honoree Kareem Cook (VI/Calhoun ’90, Duke ’94) MBA, Duke ’00, Chief Marketing Officer of Naturade. Together, we raised $3.4 million to support educational, leadership, and professional development opportunities for promising students of color in New York City.
Prep for Prep’s Leadership and Educational Enrichment Fund (LEEF) launched in May 2023. Its goal is to support student research through dedicated individual funding.
This year marked the first in which an alumnus was chosen as the gala’s honoree. Guests heard from Kareem, Preparatory Component student Cameron J. (XLV/RCDS) and graduates Krislyn Michel (XXXIX/ Packer ’23, Cornell) and Nicole Ocampo Montoya (P9 XXXII/Hotchkiss ’23, Stanford). At the beginning of her Prep Journey, Krislyn said she struggled to find resonance in Prep’s motto — Excellence, Integrity, Commitment, and Courage. “At 10 years old, those words didn’t have meaning for me,” she explained. “But now, as I embark on the next step of my Prep Journey, I see how those values shaped my dream to become a changemaker.” The Prep Journey continues for many of our graduates this fall at top colleges and universities, including Cornell University, Northwestern University, Wesleyan University, and Boston University.
LEEF will help address inequities in access to educational and enrichment opportunities for students of color via mini-grants and support for Prep programming. For Director of Leadership Development Opportunities Cindy Perez, “this is a chance to alleviate most students’ financial hardship while pursuing, among other areas, self-guided research, art projects, or travel.” The first recipients of the fund were Irati Egorho-Diez (XXXVI/Horace Mann ’20, Harvard), to support her college thesis research in Lebanon; Loren Lacruz Lugo (P9 XXX/Taft ’21, Washington Univ.), to assist in the recording of her podcast, The True Shh; Isabel T. (XL/ RCDS), to support the first anthology publication of the magazine she founded, The Gaia Zine; and Matthew S. (XLI/Trinity), to support the musical composition and recording of his EP. “I’m so proud of our work to fill this need and provide access to more opportunities even beyond the robust programming that Prep already offers,” said Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships Rebecca Ervey.

ALUMNI RECOGNITION THE RENÉE M. CHUNG PRIZE
NEW AWARD CELEBRATES LEGACY OF OUTSTANDING PREP ALUM In the spring of 2023, Prep for Prep introduced the Renée M. Chung Prize, established to recognize a graduating college senior with outstanding leadership skills and a demonstrated interest in a career in education. The prize honors the steadfast commitment to equity in education exhibited by Renée Marika Chung (XVII/St. Luke’s ’97, Trinity ’01, Amherst ’07) who passed away earlier this year.
“ Renée was a wonderful and beloved contingent-mate, advisor, teacher, colleague, and friend, and made a huge impact on the independent school world in New York and beyond.” An exemplar of our core value of commitment, Renée “[Renée’s] passing is an extraordinary loss as she touched countless members of the Prep community,” wrote Prep for Prep CEO Ruth Jurgensen in a letter to staff. “She was a wonderful and beloved contingent-mate, advisor, teacher, colleague, and friend, and made a huge impact on the independent school world in New York and beyond.”
devoted her life to making schools more equitable and inclusive. In her work at Village Community School, The Spence School, and The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine—as well as her Board service at two of her alma maters, St. Luke’s School and Trinity School— she was invested in helping students and families who might not have customarily pursued an independent school education. Renée once wrote, “One of my deepest convictions is that a school should be a sanctuary for every child that crosses its doors, no matter their background.”
RUTH JURGENSEN CEO, Prep for Prep
Renée often volunteered as a panelist, facilitator, and Aspects leader. She was a former Prep advisor, Invictus teacher, and admissions officer. Her dedicated service earned her the Prep for Prep Alumni Prize in 2010. More information about the Renée M. Chung Prize can be found at prepforprep.org/reneechungprize. ä
ROLAND PERSAUD (LA II) SELECTED AS PREP’S 2023 ALUMNI PRIZE RECIPIENT Prep for Prep is delighted to present the 2023 Alumni Prize to Roland Persaud (LA II/White Plains HS ’07, Princeton ’12) MPA, NYU ’20 for his remarkable commitment to the organization through his extensive volunteerism and dedication to public service throughout his decade-long career. The award was announced at the Prep for Prep commencement ceremonies in August 2023. Through Prep for Prep, Roland secured an internship with Bloomberg LP’s Global Data team while completing his undergraduate degree at Princeton. In 2012, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a certificate in African American Studies. He joined Bloomberg Philanthropies in 2015 and progressed within the foundation’s Government Innovation team where he currently serves as a Senior Program Officer. He obtained an Executive MPA from the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service in 2020. A native of White Plains, New York, Roland is a dedicated member of Prep for Prep’s New York Metro Region Leadership Academy, Contingent II. Roland showed an early commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders after completing his undergraduate
degree. He conducted mock interviews with high schoolers seeking summer internships and judged intern presentations for Prep undergraduate students through 2019. He contributed to Prep for Prep’s community as a member of the Alumni Council between 2018 and 2022. He has been a member of both the Fundraising and Community Engagement Committees, and from 2019 to 2022, served as Chair of the Alumni Council’s Fundraising Committee and as an Alumni Trustee on Prep’s Board.

SUCCESS IS BETTER SHARED 12
Excellence. Integrity. Commitment. Courage. These words are familiar to anyone who has gone through Prep for Prep. But it is Community — an often unspoken, but equally important element — that resonates most with Prep for Prep students, families, alumni, teachers, staff, and supporters.
We recently partnered with advertising agency TBWA\ Chiat\Day NY, headed at the time by Prep alum Nancy Reyes McLaughlin (IX/Trinity ’93, Harvard ’97), to explore ways to elevate our recruitment efforts. As the agency conducted research to better understand Prep and our mission, they soon recognized the vital role of community in the Prep experience. The TBWA team developed a new tagline and brand platform informed by this idea. Success Is Better Shared celebrates the role of community in the Prep Journey and reinforces the idea that this journey is one that isn’t traveled alone. (View the Success Is Better Shared launch video at prepforprep.org/success-is-better-shared).
Prep classmates, advisors, teachers, staff, families, alumni, and supporters all play a part in bolstering our students and helping them excel. And our students aren’t the only beneficiaries of their achievements. Their success helps uplift their families, peers, employers, and communities. We are forever grateful that Nancy and the TBWA team were able to put into words what we have known and lived as a community for years. Prep for Prep recently sat down with several alumni to discuss the impact that Prep has had on their lives and why they believe Success Is Better Shared.

For Nancy Reyes McLaughlin (IX/Trinity ’93, Harvard ’97) CEO, The Americas, BBDO, Prep for Prep opened doors to some of the country’s top schools and introduced her to a career in advertising, a field in which she has flourished. She is committed to leveraging her professional success to support Prep for Prep. In her previous role as CEO of TBWA\Chiat\Day NY, she enlisted her team to provide pro bono work to elevate Prep’s brand and recruitment efforts.
HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT PREP FOR PREP? Nancy Reyes McLaughlin: My sister was in contingent VII. She had gone through the process, so I was already predisposed to liking Prep and thinking it would be a really great idea. My teacher recommended me. I went through the program and obviously benefited a tremendous amount. That’s what made it so easy to be able to say, “How soon can I return the favor in some way?” HOW HAS YOUR PREP EXPERIENCE INFLUENCED YOUR APPROACH TO WORK? NRM: Putting my head down and doing the work, that,
for me, is pretty critical. It’s always been about that work ethic and earning a seat at the table. That has been a pretty big part of how I’ve grown up. I had to earn a chance to be in Prep for Prep. I had to earn a chance to be able to go to Trinity and go to Harvard. Thinking about every experience that I’m having as a challenge makes me feel really good, but really humble about the fact that I still have to work hard. Thinking about all of these things in that capacity has been a big part of how I lead. HOW DID THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN TBWA\CHIAT\DAY NY AND PREP FOR PREP COME ABOUT?
NRM: Prep for Prep CEO Ruth Jurgensen shared
with me that, at the time, no one on the Board had a marketing background and Prep was in need of that expertise. I felt like, “Wow, I could really make an impact that way.” I presented the option to Ruth and she was beside herself with gratitude and excitement. It was a wonderful way for me and my entire executive leadership team to give to Prep for Prep. WHAT DID THE TEAM DISCOVER THROUGH ITS WORK WITH PREP?
NRM: When it comes to who decides to apply [to Prep
for Prep], it’s changed a lot since I applied. It used to be that our parents or our teachers would introduce us to the program. In this day and age, because teachers and parents have many more options, the awareness and consideration of the program is just vastly different. It’s much more in the hands of the students themselves, who over the generations have become much more
vocal in deciding what educational opportunities they want to pursue. The messaging that was once very persuasive to an earlier generation is not as persuasive to the younger generation. There was no doubt that if you went through Prep for Prep, it was a rigorous, hardcore program. That rigor was appealing to me and my parents. But students and parents today don’t want to be pushed like that. It doesn’t mean that they’re not ambitious. They have incredible ambition and incredible desire to grow, to learn, and to change the world, but that is not what inspires them. They want to be a part of something bigger. IN YOUR LEADERSHIP ROLES, YOU HAVE BEEN COMMITTED TO HIRING PREP STUDENTS. WHY? NRM: It took me a while to realize how I could
personally give back to Prep. I opened up an office to one of the companies I worked at here in New York and we needed interns. I began to reflect on my own internship experience. Every single internship I ever had was facilitated by Prep for Prep. That was a turning point for me. I was finally in a position where I could make that kind of a decision and so I made it. I started offering internships to Prep for Prep students every summer. For the past 12 years, I’ve had the ability to offer Prep for Prep students an internship and I make it a point to hire a majority of students of color for all of our internships. WHAT DOES SUCCESS IS BETTER SHARED MEAN TO YOU?
NRM: There are so many accomplished Prep for Prep
alum out there in so many different walks of life. The idea that they share their experience and their success with the next group of Prep for Prep is paramount to the entire program. I’ve benefited from Prep for Prep. I’ve worked very hard, and now I’m in a position to be able to share my success with others. This is quite a growing, powerful, incredibly inspiring community that gets to share its success with each other and has the safety of the community to do that. The ability to be so proud together, that’s a gift. And success like this is just better shared. It feels better doing it with other people than it would be if I just admired myself in a mirror. We can all look at ourselves and each other and be like, “Look what we did, look at what this community has done, and look at what Prep for Prep has helped us to achieve.”

SUCCESS IS BETTER SHARED — WITH PREP —
Through Prep for Prep, Diógenes Brito (XXIII/Collegiate ’07, Stanford ’11), Strategic Design Advisor, Air, Inc., found his way to a successful career in product design. After working for companies such as Squarespace, LinkedIn, and Slack, he landed at Air, where he is now a Strategic Design Advisor. He credits Prep for Prep for significantly changing his life trajectory. Forever grateful for Prep’s impact, he is committed to giving back to the organization that has given him so much.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST IMPACT OF YOUR PREP FOR PREP EXPERIENCE? Diógenes Brito: My success has always built upon previous experiences and successes. If I trace it all the way back, there’s a clear change in my trajectory at Prep for Prep that has led to an entirely different outcome in my life. HOW HAS YOUR PREP EXPERIENCE INFLUENCED HOW YOU APPROACH CHALLENGES? DB: Completing Prep for Prep probably remains some of the hardest work I’ve ever done. If you go through something like Prep, you come out with this sense of self efficacy. You know you’ll be able to do challenging work and that, in and of itself, is supremely valuable because most things will yield to sufficient effort. I would say Prep helps you get the kind of discipline, grit, or just mental fortitude you need to succeed. Just the knowledge that you can get through something that’s difficult and work hard is the number one thing.
WHY IS SHARING YOUR SUCCESS WITH PREP SO IMPORTANT TO YOU? DB: I’ve been given all the tools to succeed big time and a lot of it was obviously due to Prep. In fact, I used to think to myself if I ever hit it big time, I’m going to get a giant novelty check and show up at Lilac Ball to bring it full circle. You know, you invest in me and I’m going to invest in you. That was my mindset originally. When Slack did its IPO (initial public offering), I thought, “Perfect, this is my chance.” I was very excited to make good on that internal promise. I did it — minus the novelty check — and I want to be able to keep doing that. It is really meaningful now to be on the Prep Board and be even more involved. It’s a nice way to hear about Prep’s challenges, and discover other ways to help.
HOW HAS YOUR VIEW OF GIVING BACK TO PREP FOR PREP EVOLVED OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR CAREER? DB: A lot of alumni go into these positions, like lawyer or doctor, where they can help individuals one at a time to have a really clear, direct impact. Since I went into the kind of work where you’re a little bit more
removed from direct impact, I always wondered how I could help from a different vantage point. What does helping or giving back look like as a designer like myself? How much of an effect can I have? Luckily, I’ve found again and again that I can have an impact just by being in these spaces and taking advantage of my unique perspective and background, that there is always an opportunity to give back. Now, I’m very excited to see what it looks like in a leadership position because there’s just more ability to control and influence people and the company. WHY WAS PREP FOR PREP THE RIGHT ORGANIZATION FOR AIR TO RECOGNIZE AS ITS FIRST ChAIRity OF THE YEAR? DB: It’s interesting to think of the impact of Prep over a lifetime and to have personally experienced it myself. It’s crazy to think that a lot of people have had this very same experience. There are a lot of great nonprofits that help with one situation and one point in time, but Prep is a rare organization because of its holistic approach. There are so many times that I’ve been helped by Prep over the years.
HOW HAS PREP FOR PREP BENEFITED FROM AIR’S SUPPORT? DB: There was a donation drive and Air matched all the donations to Prep. We also brainstormed together with Prep about how we could collaborate together, and ended up doing some panels with Air employees talking to Prep alums and Prep students. That was really lovely.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO HAVE THE COMPANY YOU WORK FOR SUPPORT PREP? DB: By virtue of me being at Air and in a leadership position, I could help bring the resources of the company I was at [to Prep] in some way. That was meaningful to me because it’s another one of those instances of taking advantage of your background and where you are and what you have access to to help the people, the organizations, the causes that you value. I’m very grateful for Prep and the effect it’s had on my life. I hope to take that spirit and scale it up and help other people in the same way.

SUCCESS IS BETTER SHARED — WITH FAMILY —
As a child of civil servants who valued academic achievement, Jessica Johnson-Cope (VIII/Hewitt ’92, Northwestern ’96) MA, Univ. of Georgia ’99, President, Johnson Security Bureau, Inc. observed from an early age the positive impact of education. She witnessed the power of entrepreneurship by watching her grandparents run the security company they founded. As an adult she has been able to harness the skills she learned through Prep for Prep to turn around the family business, which she now runs.
HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT PREP FOR PREP? Jessica Johnson-Cope: I was a student at P. S. 31 in The Bronx, which was one of the very early feeder schools into Prep for Prep. There was a note from the principal’s office inviting some students from our class to come down to talk about this program. I was not one of the students who was invited. My mom had read an article about Prep in The New York Times, so she reached out to see how I could take the test. That was the beginning of my Prep Journey. WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN PREP FOR PREP? JJC: The community aspect and how much our families were a part of our Prep for Prep experiences. On Wednesday evening after we finished classes, to see moms lined up in the Trinity hallway waiting to pick us up or somebody who’s dad was a cab driver and would drive two or three students home because they all lived in the same area. It really demonstrated to me how important our success was not just for us as individuals, but for our families and for our communities.
The other thing was just having to walk the halls of Trinity. It exposed some of us to things we had never seen before. It was a level set for what we would be exposed to when we got to our independent schools. Just to see the level of influence, the level of affluence, and the level of excellence that we experienced at Trinity really got the wheels turning as to what I could expect to see when I got to a school like Hewitt. HOW DID YOUR FAMILY INFLUENCE YOUR VIEWS ABOUT WORK? JJC: We had a nice diversity of exposure to what work looked like seeing my civil servant parents (my dad was in the New York State Assembly and my mom was with the New York State Department of Health), seeing my grandmother work as an entrepreneur [running Johnson Security Bureau, Inc.]. We had a village of people who went to work, people who appreciated work, respected the opportunity to earn a living fair wage but then also demonstrated to us that the things that we had came by virtue of us having the opportunity to work.
Part of the reason my grandparents and my dad had different opportunities was because they could have education. I got to see what a difference it meant to have education and to be able to leverage education to have opportunity. And then once you had an opportunity, you didn’t keep it to yourself. You used that opportunity to help others, particularly others in your community. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR DESIRE TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR? JJC: I was kind of an outlier. I didn’t want to be a banker. I didn’t know anything about being a banker. My dad was an attorney and he wasn’t happy being an attorney and my grandmother was an educator before she started our business. That was not my ministry. I did not have that gift. I figured that by owning and running a business, I could figure things out. Entrepreneurs are very much like engineers. Engineers solve problems and entrepreneurs solve business problems. I saw it as being a way to address business problems and being a curious young lady, I figured I could do it.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE OVER RUNNING YOUR FAMILY’S BUSINESS? JJC: While I was enjoying life in Dallas my mom called and told me my dad was sick. I realized I had to go back [to New York City] and help my dad rebuild the business. In his sickness, we had lost some contracts, the number of employees had decreased, the revenues had decreased. I was like, “We can’t go out like that.” My grandparents had worked too hard, they had sacrificed for their kids to have so much. [My brother and I] made the decision October 4, 2008 to take over the business. Now it’s 2023 and we’re stronger and better than ever.
YOU’VE GROWN JOHNSON SECURITY BUREAU FROM 16 EMPLOYEES AND TWO CLIENTS TO 200 EMPLOYEES AND 12 CLIENTS. WHAT WERE YOU ABLE TO DRAW FROM YOUR PREP EXPERIENCE AS YOU WENT THROUGH THE REBUILDING PROCESS? JJC: Prep was not easy. As I went through the work of rebuilding Johnson Security, that was nothing new to me because I had already done [difficult] work when I was in Prep, managing my public school work and my Prep for Prep work. Failure and quitting was not an option.

SUCCESS IS BETTER SHARED — WITH FELLOW ALUMNI —
From fellow students to friends to business partners, the connections made through Prep for Prep lift up every facet of an alum’s life. This rings true for Prep alumni and creators of GameFlo, Co-Founder & CEO Chijioge “Chi” Nwogu (P9 XV/Choate ’06, Brown ’10) MBA, UNC Chapel Hill ’18; Co-Founder & CTO Ian Allen (XXII/Browning ’06, Brown ’10); and Executive Producer Errol King (P9 XI/Kent ’02, CUNY Lehman). Together, they’ve taken GameFlo from dream to reality. Their first card game, PickUp Basketball, will be available in 1,700 Target stores starting in June 2024.

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THE START OF YOUR PREP JOURNEY? Chijioge “Chi” Nwogu: I learned about Prep through my older sister. My older sister and Errol were both in the same PREP 9 contingent, so there was that pressure. Prep was tough, too, but I enjoyed the rigor of Prep compared to my middle school. I felt like I was getting a bit distracted in middle school. Ian Allen: I had no idea what was going on. It wasn’t until the school year when I started visiting independent schools that I realized, “Oh, this is kind of serious.” And then more so when I went to my independent school and started doing Aspects of Leadership. Aspects was really instrumental in helping me understand Prep and building that same community that takes me to this day. Errol King: I got to Kent School and I think I had an F GPA the first semester. I didn’t fail every class because academically it was challenging. I failed every class because I was unprepared for the social-cultural shift. Once I started to go to Aspects, I started organizing in the school. I started to build a community. Aspects introduced ethics, social dynamics, and other tools that helped me think differently. I left there feeling like I had a total grip over what was going on. I went to Kent feeling like I had no traction and Aspects was a major shift. HOW DID THE THREE OF YOU CONNECT? CN: Me and Ian met in Aspects. From a social
standpoint, Aspects helped us bond and feel more comfortable. We both chose to go to Brown knowing if we went together, we could do some amazing stuff there. The first email I sent to Errol was June of 2014. I’m like, nice to meet you at the Lilac Ball, let’s talk about playing basketball and let’s talk about the game you built. Errol built a game called Beta to teach kids how to code. Later that year, he joined my recreational basketball team. We won two championships together. WHAT IS GAMEFLO AND EACH OF YOUR ROLES IN IT?
CN: From our start, GameFlo was all about us trying to
use games to help people learn skills [initially tied to data science]. We found that there’s really a gap in inclusive games where we can see ourselves in it.
Our first game is called PickUp Basketball. It’s a really cool card game. We use those games at Boys and Girls Clubs, after-school programs, to work with young people. I’m the CEO. Ian is the CTO, and Errol is really our number one advisor. The company is owned by all of us. As we expand, we want to bring in more Prep family. WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT GAMEFLO? CN: I am a basketball geek, which I have to embrace. I think that began when I was a kid. I was good at math, but to apply math in real time came from me being involved in sports. That’s why, in GameFlo, we use a passion point that people have and help them use that passion point to apply what they should be learning. That’s what excites me, knowing that I can really change education in a way in which I know is going to change lives. EK: I get excited working with Chi and Ian. A thousand
people will come to you with an idea, but a hundred might actually listen, maybe 10 will actually do. That is energizing for me to see the snowball catch. I love making games and I know these two. I know the grit, I know the character, so you just bet on the team. WHAT’S THE VALUE OF WORKING WITH FELLOW PREP ALUM?
EK: There’s trust and there’s a benefit of the doubt that
is offered to a stranger. It’s also filial. I have childhood friends that are still family. The other thing is business moves at the speed of trust. You have a common experience. You don’t have to question the situation. You don’t realize the power of the Prep for Prep network until you’re in your career and you can pull those connections, those relationships, in authentic ways. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO MAINTAIN A CONNECTION WITH PREP FOR PREP?
IA: It’s amazing to be part of a network of such talented, good people. I feel that Prep alum tend to gravitate to each other to support each other. That’s part of the reason I’m so proud to pay it forward to the next generation of Prep folks. CN: I love the fact that I got my first internship through
Prep. I love the fact that we now give kids in Prep their first internship. I want to keep that going and have more Prep interns and Prep graduates be a part of this team.
