Design
The project deals with current housing crisis faced by the city. A block in San Francisco is recoded along historical phases from 1906 earthquake to current day. The concept is to create multiple grounds with air parcels and a pedestrian network at higher levels to accommodate for dense living conditions. Thus whole city block is imagined as series of plateaus acting as ground for rooting of various programs.

City plateau network continues through apartment building The circulation is designed in a way that it ensures continuity of city plateau network and connect them vertically. The building further explores concept of air parcels in city code. Three apartment buildings are built by different developers. Above plateau level 3, collaboration between them creates new large parcels above ground.

Space Weaver – Ultra light weight column weaving machine Space Weaver is designed to create ultra-lightweight woven structures with fibrous materials. Using a 3-axis gantry system, in a similar process as 3D printers, except they produce higher strength-to-weight ratio, zero waste, and no support material. Space Weaver is a seven foot tall 3D printer that uses carbon fiber and fiberglass to print five foot tall woven structures.

Design
Design concept is derived from the fort wall that existed on the site in the 19 cen. The design language morphs the symbolic defensive image of the wall to an inviting one by disintegrating it with pathways which are pulled from the movement lines of the town of Pathankot.

The housing project deals with very close knit Muslim community. The site, Bhendi Bazaar, serves high density of population, yet the observation was that people long for a space which they can identify with and distinct it from others. This came out strong with gestures of cladding the front wall of individual houses with tiles or simply giving it a different colour to provide the space an identity and call it as their own place.

ILA is architect of record for this high end building designed by Robert A M Stern. We are responsible for all construction documents and building construction with Robert A M Stern’s design intent. This high end residential building is precast hence coordination and precision is key in drawings and construction process.
