From The Editor Good evening and welcome to the IP Truck Parts Stadium for today’s match in the Buildbase FA Trophy. It is a pleasure to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Runcorn Linnets to Prescot for the first time this season and we hope that everyone connected with the Linnets enjoys their time in our company. Greetings, too, to the match officials and a special thank you to the sponsors of today’s fixture. The match has been sponsored by Enid Harding in memory of her late husband, Dave who was a familiar face around the ground. A tireless volunteer on the club’s behalf, he remains in the hearts of his family and many friends. Tonight’s match was a few seconds away from not happening at all, but Zac Aley’s late, late equaliser cancelled out Lloyd Dean’s goal for Cables. So, perhaps a little unexpectedly, we find ourselves having to do it all again and I find myself writing the Editor’s notes for one last time. I hope that doing so will help bring good fortune to Cables on what will be a difficult evening against strong opposition. In some ways, having a home match is a good thing, given that Prescot have been handed a run of fixtures which was originally nine away matches out of ten (this replay changes that ratio to eight out of ten). How any club is supposed to maintain its financial health in the face of such scheduling is beyond me, so having the opportunity to generate some income is very welcome. That might change again, of course, depending on how this game (and the draw) turn out; these notes have been written on Sunday, so I don’t know what awaits the winners of this match. What I can say with certainty is that on Saturday, the First Team will travel to Pontefract Collieries in the BetVictor Northern Premier League. Travel details will be announced over the tannoy this evening as well as via the club’s social media channels. Before I sign off, I want to congratulate our Secretary, Matt Roberts, who married Michelle on Sunday. Michelle has become a familar face on matchdays (often accompanied by Peppah the Pesky Pug) and also works with the County FA Representative Teams. Everyone at the club would like to wish Matt and Michelle a long and happy life together. They’re away on honeymoon at the moment and I’m sure they will have a brilliant time. Thank you for your support this evening. Enjoy the match!

Our Visitors Today: Runcorn Linnets Our guests this afternoon would have been promoted to Step 3 last season, had the usual rules applied.

R

uncorn Linnets enjoyed a very creditable introduction to Northern Premier League football in 2018-19. Remaining competitive throughout the season following promotion to the NPL Division One West, they eventually missed out on a Play-off spot on goal difference.

Manager Michael Ellison had plenty of cause for celebration in the 100th anniversary year of the founding of the original Linnets, Runcorn AFC after steering the team into the fourth tier of the National League System in only his second season in management.

Comfort with their new status was further underlined by the Linnets progressing to the Semi-Finals of the Integro League Cup, defeating two Premier Division opponents along the way.

After three runners-up finishes in the previous four seasons, promotion was finally clinched on April 28th 2018 the 12th anniversary of the fans-owned club’s foundation.

In 2019-20, after further reorganisation within the newly-rebranded BetVictor Northern Premier League, the club will again meet fresh challenges - facing no fewer than seven new league opponents in the North West Division.

The title was duly secured on May 3rd with a 5-0 home victory over Blackpool outfit, Squires Gate.

Runcorn Linnets had put the heartbreak of multiple promotion disappointments behind them by securing a place in the NPL as The Hallmark Security

The long-awaited league crown had been captured with two matches to spare and 100 points – a club record 122 league goals being scored over the 44 games and only 36 conceded. A crowd of 890 – the Linnets’ biggest for a competitive home match – saw the

league winners’ trophy being lifted by jubilant club captain, Kyle Hamid on the final day of the league season. Linnets have come a long way since being founded in 2006 by supporters of former national non-league champions, Runcorn AFC after a traumatic end for the old club. The initial aims had been to bring the successor Lin-

nets back to Runcorn and re-establish the club as one of which the community could be proud. Both these ambitions were achieved with the club still in its infancy. The Millbank Linnets Stadium in Murdishaw, Runcorn, opened in 2010 with the project having been supported by Halton Borough Council, the FA and Football Foundation as well as the club and its fans. The winter of 2017 saw the completion of a replacement £1.4 million clubhouse as part of wider redevelopment of sur-

rounding land with retail and leisure facilities. The stadium is also home to Runcorn Linnets Ladies. At the same time, surrounding pitches were fenced in for use by the Linnets’ numerous junior teams with the club also signing a new long-term lease for the extended site with Halton Council. Runcorn Linnets Football Club was born after Runcorn AFC had intimated they would not be in a position to field a team beyond the end of 2005-06 season. Since leaving town in 2001, the now defunct club had

suffered a troubled and nomadic existence. Fans met at their spiritual home of Canal Street – in the then Quayside (now Bridgewater) Bar and Function Rooms, next to the Linnets Park housing estate on which Runcorn AFC’s ground had once stood. An existing Supporters Trust

was remodelled to run Runcorn Linnets, whose identity was derived from Runcorn AFC’s nickname. The new club spent its first four years playing home games as tenants of Witton Albion FC at Wincham Park, gaining promotion at the first attempt to the top division of the North West Counties League.

Victory against Formby in the NWCL Challenge Cup final in 2012-13 brought a first winners’ trophy for the first team. This season will see Linnets make their debut in the NPL Academy as they look to build on firm foundations.

Bayleigh Passant (Goalkeeper) Linnets agreed a loan deal for Tranmere Rovers’ 18-year-old ‘keeper Bayleigh at the start of this season. The Liverpoolborn player has been with the now English Football League One club throughout his youth career and signed his first professional contract in May 2019. In 2018-19, Bayleigh was on the bench for four of Tranmere’s cup-ties - including their home FA Cup meeting with Tottenham Hotspur. Richie Mottram (Goalkeeper)

A vastly-experienced campaigner with more than 200 NPL appearances to his credit, Richie returned to The Millbank on the first day of the 2019-20 campaign. He had already played 101 times for Linnets. He has always been hugely popular with Runcorn fans, who voted him Supporters Club Player of the Year in 2014-15. In May 2013, Richie was the goalkeeper in the team which lifted the North West Counties League Challenge Cup, defeating Formby 3-0 to bring home Linnets’ first winners trophy.

Ally Brown (Defence) Ally arrived at The Millbank Linnets Stadium in March 2019 and finished last season as first-choice right back. Ally is no stranger to helping teams to step up to the NPL Premier Division, having won promotion with Trafford in 2012-13 and Warrington Town (2015-16). His other clubs have included Radcliffe Borough, Chorley, Droylsden and Witton Albion. U18 and Reserve teams. The 25-year-old, 6ft 5in Huddersfield-born centre back joined Linnets for the 2019-20 season after seven years of playing and coaching in the United States. He played in the National Premier Soccer League for AFC Cleveland, winning the title in 2016, and later Cleveland SC. Peter Wylie (Defence) Peter joined in time for Linnets’ first home game of 201819 against Chasetown and established himself as a central defensive regular. Only two players made more appearances than his 43 (all starts) in 2018-19. Peter signed for Runcorn from Marine, having also had two spells at Skelmersdale but began his career at Blackburn Rovers, featuring in their FA Youth Cup side. He has also served Stalybridge Celtic. Nick Ryan (Defence) Nick joined Linnets in summer 2019, having been out of football since April 2018 with an injury sustained while playing for Witton Albion in the NPL Premier Division. The

central defender had joined Albion ahead of the 2017-18 and had secured himself a contract for a second season before injury struck. Nick has also represented Stalybridge Celtic in National League North and played NPL football for Burscough. Louis Corrigan (Defence) Louis has been a consistently strong performer in the Yellow and Green over the previous one and a half seasons. One of the division’s best left backs, set-piece specialist Louis is an excellent reader of the game. He signed for at Tranmere as a 16-year-old, staying for two years and later enjoying a couple of spells at both Colwyn Bay and Skelmersdale. Has also played for Marine and in Australia for Shepparton United. Jack Hinnigan (Defence) Jack made his Linnets debut in in their Integro League Cup victory at Hyde United at the beginning of December 2018. Jack is a left-sided centre half, who is good in the air and comfortable with the ball at

his feet. He was previously with Warrington Town and has played for Ashton Town in the North West Counties League. Jimmy Moore (Defence) Jimmy returned to the club in September 2019, a year after leaving the Linnets to re-join NPL rivals Trafford. He had been a central defender in the Linnets team which won the North West Counties League Premier Division title in 201718, earning the Supporters Club Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Year accolades. Jimmy’s former clubs also include Cheadle Town, Atherton Collieries and Abbey Hey. Zac Aley (Utility) Able to play in any position on the left, Zac brings versatility and balance to the squad. He joined Runcorn in October 2016. The Liverpool-born midfield player had spent two years on professional forms at Blackburn Rovers after rising through the ranks at Southport. He has subsequently played for Warrington Town,

Northwich Victoria and Ashton Town. Kyle Hamid (Midfield) Long-serving Kyle is Linnets’ Club Captain and was the first player to sign up with Runcorn Linnets for this season. In 2017-18, he became the Linnets’ first title-winning captain, lifting the North West Counties League championship trophy. His 231 club outings (with 72 goals) - going into 2019/20 - ranked him as second on the club’s all-time list of appearance makers. Kyle joined in December 2012 after 18 months at Warrington Town Has also seen NPL duty for Marine and Skelmersdale United. Bobby Evans (Midfield) Bobby is in his second season at Runcorn Linnets, having appeared 21 times in 2018-19. Formerly with AFC Liverpool, he chipped in with a couple of goals and was one of Runcorn’s spot-kick specialists, netting in penalty shootout Integro Cup wins over Premier Division outfits Warrington Town, Hyde United and Stalybridge Celtic. Warren Bellew (Midfield) With two Linnets spells already under his belt, Warren re-joined in pre-season from local football, his most recent senior club being Colwyn Bay. Warren scored 52 goals in 156 games for Runcorn Town. He represented Clitheroe and Prescot Cables while landing the NPL First Division North title with Skelmersdale United. Best known as a wide player, he can also play centrally. Ronnie McCarthy (Midfield) Last season saw holding player Ronnie consolidate his comeback to the game after serious injury and with a full pre-season behind him he has come back even stronger. Initially

joining the Linnets in August 2016 on a dual-registration with Skelmersdale United, Ronnie made his first debut off the bench in a 4-1 North West Counties League win against Irlam - the Linnets’ maiden competitive victory under manager Michael Ellison. Ronnie has also represented Vikings FC (now Widnes) and Burscough. Michael Simpson (Midfield) Starting the 2019/20 campaign with 174 Linnets appearances and 23 goals under his belt, Michael is one of the most familiar faces in the squad. He is in his third Linnets spell, having returned to the Millbank Linnets Stadium from Prescot Cables in December 2016. A one-time Academy player at Bury, he has had a couple of stints with Skelmersdale United and earned NWCL league and Challenge Cup winners’ medals with Runcorn. Harry Cannon-Noren (Midfield) Harry scored a superb solo goal at the Millbank Limnets Stadium for league rivals Clitheroe last season and signed for the Linnets after impressing in pre-season. He has played earlier in his career for hometown club Southport’s Youth team, Morecambe at Under-23 level and AFC Liverpool. Primarily a right sided player with great pace and power, Harry can play anywhere across the midfield. Tom Owens (Midfield) Tom put pen to paper after an eye-catching performance in a pre-season win but first appeared for the club as a 2019 summer triallist before playing in Welsh Premier League for Aberystwyth and Llandudno. Tom spent five months with Radcliffe Borough in late 2017 after almost seven years in Preston NE’s Youth Academy.

Tom helped Michigan Bucks to two national championships in the USL Premier Development League, the fourth tier of the American soccer pyramid. He runs his own coaching school. Ryan Wade (Midfield) Ryan is an experienced campaigner who has played UEFA Europa League football for Airbus UK Broughton and more recently Bala Town. He arrived at the Millbank Linnets Stadium for the start of this season from Llandudno, after starting last season in the NPL Premier Division with Marine. Also formerly at Northwich Victoria, Skelmersdale, Burscough, Vauxhall Motors, Runcorn Town and Prescot Cables, Ryan operates in support of the front players or out wide. Josh Dobie (Midfield) Josh is in his second season at Runcorn Linnets. Formerly with Runcorn Town, Skelmersdale United and Southport, he joined Linnets as a centre half but has primarily been used by manager Michael Ellison as a holding midfielder. He was schooled at Liverpool FC, joining the Reds’ Academy as a five-year-old and moving through the age groups before finally making it into the Anfield club’s Under-18 side. Josh’ made 19 appearances for Linnets in 2018-19, starting a dozen games. Paul Shanley (Wing) The talented. hard-working winger completed a century of Linnets career appearances during the course of last season. Paul had featured more than anyone in the team which carried off the North West Counties League title in 2017-18. He was named North West Counties League Player of the Year in 2015-16 while with Runcorn Town, whom he had joined from Atherton Colw w w. p re s cotca b le s a fc. co m

lieries. Ryan Gibson (Wing) Ryan is a home town player who joined Linnets from local football. He is now in his first full season at The Millbank, after making a very good impression over his initial five months in the ranks. From the moment he took the field as a substitute in December 2018’s midweek Integro Cup win at Premier Division side Hyde United, he made light of what was a considerable step up from the Chester & Wirral League. When scoring a last-gasp equaliser on home debut against Glossop North End, he more than justified Michael Ellison’s decision to draft him in from Helsby FC, walking off with Linnets’ final Player of the Month award in 2018-19. Jamie Rainford (Attack) Another pre-season capture, Jamie finished last season in joint second in the West Division scoring charts with 22 goals in spells with Widnes, Clitheroe and Ramsbottom United. He had ended the

14

previous season with Colwyn Bay, having hit 29 goals for Glossop North End in in 2015-16. Jamie first came to prominence at Prescot Cables and later moved on to Marine while his travels have also seen duty at Chester, FC Halifax Town and AFC Fylde. Mark Houghton (Attack) The long-serving front man resumed playing in the summer of 2019 after sitting out the Linnets’ inaugural Northern Premier League campaign through injury. He had played 40 times, scoring 11 goals, to end the club’s 2017-18 title-winning North West Counties League season on 212 Linnets career outings and 76 goals. Mark played for Southport in the Football Conference before representing Skelmersdale United in two spells either side of winning the NPL Division One title with Chorley. Connor McCarthy (Attack) The brother of Ronnie, Connor re-joined Linnets from Warrington Town on the eve of this season. Connor first

arrived at Linnets in September 2018, having been a regular at FC United of Manchester in National League North the previous season, but left for higher-division football with Warrington after 15 appearances with five goals. Having begun his career at Prescot Cables and Skelmersdale, Connor was signed by Southport where he played in the top division of the National League. He has also been at AFC Telford United. Kurt Sherlock (Attack) Kurt was welcomed back by Runcorn Linnets in late July 2018, after a two-season absence. After departing The Millbank in the summer of 2016, Kurt had played in National League North for Stalybridge Celtic, for Marine and Radcliffe in the Northern Premier League and Welsh Premier League outfit Aberystwyth Town. Kurt made 33 appearances in 2018-19, netting 11 times, and taking his Linnets career total to 89 outings with 28 goals.

CABLES QUAKE AT FEETHAMS Roy McDonald

In today’s feature, we will look at the second – and last time – that Prescot Cables reached the first round proper of the FA Cup – 60 years ago this week.

C

ables opened their campaign in the 1959-60 FA Cup against Flint Town United. The home fans were wary of Welsh opposition, having been eliminated from the Cup by Welsh teams seven times since the war. Despite an injury crisis at the club, the Cables eased to a 4-0 home victory, with emergency centre forward, Harry Grisedale, grabbing a hat-trick and the other goal from Ronnie King. Two days earlier, Harry had bagged six goals in a 7 – 1 win over South Liverpool in the Liverpool Senior Cup! A single, Ted Forshaw goal in a hard fought victory at Earlestown in the second qualifying round, saw Cables come up against another Welsh side, in

16

w w w.presc otc a b lesa fc . c om

Bangor City. Once again, the Welshmen proved no match for the rampant Tigers at Hope Street, going down by 4 goals to 1, with Grisedale netting another hat trick, and Ronnie King, the scorers. So, for the second time in three seasons, Cables had reached the final qualifying round of the Cup, and hopes were high when they were awarded a home tie against Cheshire league side, Altrincham. In a tight, pulsating game, the Cables came out on top, by the only goal, headed home by Ted Forshaw, sparking “the loudest and longest roar Prescot has heard for many a moon; caps flung into the air by jubilant fans; players swarming round the scorer with triumphant glee.”

So, for the second time in three season they had secured a place in the draw for the First Round Proper. Cables and Burscough were the only clubs from the Lancashire Combination to reach the main draw. After their disappointing trip to Hartlepool two years earlier, could Cables get a league club, at home this time? Alas no, and it would be another trip to the North East, this time to face Darlington on 14th November 1959. Club secretary, Eddie Parkinson, commented, “Naturally, we do not relish the idea of having to travel to almost the same district where our cup aspirations ended two seasons ago, but we are not pessimistic. We feel our team will give a

good account of Lancashire Combination football. But it would have been so much rosier and nicer had we been favoured with a home draw. Our ambition was to bring an English League club to Hope Street for the first time in our history: it would have pleased a band of loyalists whose support has helped Prescot into the first round proper for a second time in three years.” It was claimed that the Prescot Cables team and officials made non-League soccer history on the evening of Friday 13th November 1959, when they flew from Speke Airport to Leeds-Bradford Aerodrome at Yeadon, for their overnight headquarters in Harrogate, before continuing by coach to

Darlington on the Saturday morning. Despite an indifferent away record in the league, Cables supporters were optimistic of achieving a shock at Darlington and around 1.000 supporters were expected to travel to the North-East, by excursion train and motor coach to back The Tigers. They were confident that their team could, at least, hold the League side to a draw and bring them back to Hope Street for the replay. With utility man, Harry Grisedale, having switched to centre forward in place of Ted Forshaw, and already having 15 goals to his name, they felt that Cables would be a match for anyone on their own turf.

Prescot had named a strong eleven, with Harry Grisedale continuing up front, alongside Ted Forshaw, and ex Southport man, Don Henderson at the centre of defence. The former Huddersfield Town, Southport and Witton Albion player, Jimmy Pennington, was named at inside-right. This was only his second appearance in the first team after a year’s lay-off through an injury he sustained in a Cables’ trial match in August, 1958. The match began in teeming rain, and early raids by Prescot ruffled Darlington, as Grisedale tested home ‘keeper, Tinsley, with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. The home side quickly got into their stride and with fine prompting from half

backs Furphy and Bulch began to play some attractive football. Quaker’s full back, Henderson brought the best out of Frank Garton when he came up and sent in a low shot on the turn. This caused panic in the Prescot goalmouth and the visitors were lucky not to find themselves in arrears.

sterling work.

But a confidence-sapping first goal looked near and it was a heart-breaker for the Cables’ defence and their loyal supporters when it came. In the 16th minute the ball ran out for a throw-in on the left side of the pitch. Frank Phillips directed the throw towards his goalkeeper, who came out to collect it. However, Frank Garton slipped on the sodden turf at the vital moment, under a challenge from the Quakers’ centre forward Morton. The goalkeeper lost a tussle for possession and Morton shot at an empty goal. Cables captain, Ken Fletcher, in a desperate attempt to stop the ball on the line, could only manage to help it into his own goal.

The League side were yards faster than Cables, hit the ball hard and true, tackled speedily and effectively and passed with the knowledge that a colleague would be in the right place to take it. With the advantage in every department Darlington continued to hammer at the Prescot goal but their play became a little casual and their finishing was sloppy. Consequently a number of openings were wasted, although Poole hit the post with a tremendous shot. Cables did play some of their best football after the break, but only once was the Darlington goal in the picture — when Jimmy Pennington sent in a long range shot which Tinsley saved. Otherwise Prescot were playing with their backs to the wall, and it was no surprise when Darlington scored their fourth and final goal in the 81st minute, when Morton headed home a cross from Poole.

In the 26th minute Darlington went two up when Poole beat two men on the wing before putting over a centre which Redfearn headed home, under a challenge from Fletcher. Darlington were now dominating the play and Prescot were in trouble every time the home forwards got the ball. The visiting defence was being overworked with Frank Garton and centre half Don Henderson doing some

18

w w w.presc otc a b lesa fc . c om

The game was over as a contest in the 37th minute when Darlington went three up when Poole headed home direct from a corner. Half-time. Darlington 3. Prescot Cables nil.

Defeat was by no means a surprise, but the Prescot supporters were disappointed by how quickly their hopes of an upset was banished. The Darlington side’s tactics, to attack by the

shortest possible route (what we would now call the longball game) caused the Cables’ defence great difficulty, which was, perhaps, not reflected in the final score. Had Darlington’s finishing been better, the defeat could have been much greater. In contrast, Prescot played too closely and overdid the backpassing, and were able to mount few worthwhile attacks. Final Score: Darlington 4 Prescot Cables 0 Darlington: Tinsley, Dunn, Henderson, Furphy, Greener, Bulch, Rayment, Poole, Morton, Milner, Redfearn Prescot Cables: Frank Garton, Ken Fletcher (captain), Keith Hayward, Ronnie Mercer, Don Henderson, Frank Phillips, George Graham, Jimmy Pennington, Ted Forshaw, Harry Grisedale, Johnny Smith Referee: Mr (Liversedge)

Attendance: 5,944 As well as the disappointing defeat, Prescot’s moment in the national spotlight was also dimmed somewhat by being referred to on the television as Prescot Central! Prescot Cables have not managed to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup since.

CLEARANCE? IT’S NOT CLEAR AT ALL! David Richardson

This week’s column from The Non-League Paper highlights a recurring theme in this season’s Buildbase FA Trophy

I

s anyone else wondering who would be a club secretary in the wake of more clubs falling foul of the rules when it comes to ineligible players? There seems to be so much red tape to jump over and areas where you can be tripped up that some may feel they don’t need the hassle. Brighouse Town joined Willand Rovers last week as the latest side to be kicked out of the FA Trophy. Both clubs fielded a player who didn’t have international clearance, despite having played for other teams in the National League system before joining them, and were removed from the competition. It remains to be seen how far these cases will go –

30

w w w.presc otc a b lesa fc . c om

presumably they will have played in league and other competitions too. Both clubs felt they had followed the guidelines but that wasn’t enough to prevent them slipping the wrong side. And then Bedfont Sports joined the ineligible party. The Eagles won their initial FA Trophy preliminary round tie fixture at Grays Athletic 3-0 on October 12 but were charged by football’s governing body for fielding a playing without international clearance. It had been suggested that two of the Isthmian League South Central division’s players didn’t have the correct clearance to play, but Bedfont provided the appropriate documents that had been granted by The FA themselves.

However, it was found that the previous club of one of the players – a team in Romania – had not applied to the Welsh FA in 2014 for clearance and therefore the chain was not complete prior to him signing for Bedfont. Consequently, his international clearance from the FA to Bedfont was cancelled when this was raised four days prior to their first round qualifying fixture at Hitchin Town. Having considered the evidence presented by the club, FA members, in accordance with FA Trophy Rule 16(c), accepted the club did not know and could not have known, even had they made every reasonable enquiry, that the player was ineligible and should not be removed from the competition. However, they were still subject to any other penalty such as being ordered to replay the tie, which

took place on Wednesday (November 6). The feedback we often get is that clubs are finding it harder and harder to attract

people to putting their hand up for the vital jobs that keep Non-League clubs going – and issues like these aren’t helping.

Volunteers need all the help and encouragement they can get. The game needs to get together and find some real solutions.

BUSY WEEKEND IN THE FA TROPHY Almost a dozen matches involving Northern Premier League clubs took place in Saturday’s Second Qualifying Round

N

orthern Premier League clubs were well represented in the Second Qualifying Round of the Buildbase FA Trophy and the League will have eight representatives in the Third Qualifying Round. In an all-Premier Division tie, Atherton Collieries shook off indifferent League form to defeat Morpeth Town 2-1. FC United of Manchester also knocked out a side from their own division, thanks to a 3-1 win over Basford United. In the third game involving two Premier Division outfits, Matlock Town beat Ashton United 1-0. Our North/West Division colleagues, Colne, continued their outstanding form in the FA Competitions and upset Premier Division Buxton. The Reds were 3-1 winners at Holt House. Also in the hat are Work-

ington, who hit the same scoreline at Leek Town. Ties between NPL clubs and Southern League opponents had mixed results. South Shields romped to a 4-0 win at home to AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Gainsborough Trinity won 5-3 at Tamworth, but Whitby Town were beaten at Peterborough Sports and Sutton Coldfield Town were heavily beaten at home to Hednesford Town. Elsewhere, Bedfont Sports (see page 30) remain in the competition. Having won at Grays Athletic for the second time in midweek, they drew 1-1 at Hitchin Town and also replay tonight.

K-Bull is going on a Summer Holiday before the new season starts, but he has left his bucket and spade behind.

TIME TO STOP TYPING

Can you help him find them so that he can make a sandcastle once he gets to the beach?

Gareth Coates

Your outgoing Editor explains some of his reasons for stepping down

A

replay creates challenges for programme editors but, for me, tonight’s game represents an opportunity. Having tendered my resignation the morning after the first match with Pickering, I hadn’t expected to get a chance to explain to readers why I decided I couldn’t continue in the role. Yet here we are, so please indulge me for a moment so I can share some thoughts with you. The truth is, I nearly stepped down before the season had even started. To do this job to the level I aspire to takes time; anything up to 20 hours for a single issue. To make that time, around work and family commitments, requires a certain amount of stamina. I have had pulled an awful lot of late

34

w w w.presc otc a b lesa fc . c om

nights over the last three years. That means that the summer break needs to be just that; a complete rest. The Northern Premier League’s change of sponsor ensured that the clubs got no time to recharge during the closed season. The timing was one challenge and meant that websites needed changing at almost zero notice and the compulsory adverts were received very late, making planning the book very difficult. Having got myself involved with the website in addition to the programme, I found myself working to extremely tight deadlines on two fronts. We were even dictated to by the League in terms of where the sponsor’s logo had to go on the programme cover. By the beginning of August, I had serious doubts about my ability to continue with the programme but with

the season about to start, I decided that, although I would continue in the job, this season would definitely be my last. I didn’t want to let the club down (this is the element of stopping now that troubles me the most) and I balanced that against the pushback that I get from my wife and family about the amount of time each issue consumed. I was sure that, with a definite ‘end point’ in sight, I would be able to maintain both our standards and my energy levels. However, I was very, very wrong. Again, the League didn’t help matters. There have been several demands for changes to be made to club websites and for content to be published on behalf of League sponsors - often with unrealistic deadlines. That adds to the stress levels volunteers are exposed

to and every hour spent injecting code into the website to comply with the League’s requirements is an hour less to work on a programme (or an hour less in bed). Then, the real world got in the way. I was offered a fantastic opportunity to write for a living, working for an online store called ToolStore UK. This involved both a longer commute on a daily basis and an earlier start time, making the lost hours of sleep harder to recoup. I anticipated this additional challenge and was prepared to do my best to work around it but that rather fraught evening at home to Pickering - where I was trying (and failing) to provide remote support to a smaller than usual team at the ground - was a tipping point for me.

I wasn’t enjoying the process of compiling programmes any more and that, with all the changes occuring in my personal life, either the quality of my work was going to suffer, or my mental health was going to decline significantly. Three days earlier, I had been at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough, watching their 0-0 draw with Fulham from the comfort on an Executive Box. My Great Uncle and five of the people closest to him were guests of the club, to celebrate his 100th birthday. I was struck then at the paucity of the programme, which contained fewer pages (and cost less to buy) than a typical issue of The Walloper. What really irritated me was the fact that there was only a single page about the visiting club.

I realised that night that

If we were to include only

one page about Runcorn Linnets, we would be fined. This is because the rules of our League (and which apply to this stage of the FA Trophy) state that we must include the full history and pen-pictures of our guests in a full programme. While I don’t have an issue with that, the fact remains that this is just one of several areas where the volunteers in non-league football are held to a higher level of accountability than the professionals in the Premier League and EFL. Indeed, EFL clubs don’t even have to produce programmes, much less provide seven pages of information about the away team. The rules by which we must abide have been written by The FA and apply to all competitions from the National League down to the North West Counties

League (and all points inbetween). While I broadly agree with their provisions, I resent having to achieve a higher standard than someone who does this for a living. I’ve helped four non-league clubs, having first got involved at Egham Town aged 10, and I feel that the nonleague game is now over-regulated, especially when the rules that we live by simply don’t apply further up the ladder. When I took the programme on, I promised my wife (and myself, for that matter), that if I stopped enjoying the role, I would step

away from it. Unfortunately, a fortnight ago, I reached that point and I would rather be honest with everyone than continue, turn out programmes that are not up to standard and make myself ill in the process. With Matt Roberts on honeymoon and a very short turnaround time to complete this issue, I was happy to put together one last issue, especially for such an important match. I look back on my time in the Editor’s chair with great pride; I know we have put together publications that have brought plea-

sure to many and we picked up a few prizes along the way. I’m not walking away from the club but I am looking forward to watching a game as a fan, rather than as a volunteer. I’m enormously grateful to everyone who has contributed and even more thankful for everyone who bought copies on a matchday. It has been a pleasure to be the programme editor but, loathe as I am to ‘drop people in it’, I need to put myself and my family first. Thanks for reading.

K-Bull’s Kids Korner K-Bull likes to go on mazy dribbles across the pitch with the ball at his hooves! Can you find out which one of these three ended with a goal?

Hi everyone! A warm welcome to all you Pesky Calves. I hope that you are wrapped up warm for what might be a long (and cold) evening. After a dramatic equaliser for Runcorn on Saturday, tonight’s replay will determine which club goes through to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy and a potential tie against a National League North club. I’ve had to put my page together before the draw was made, so you’ll probably know what the prize is for the winning team.

TONIGHT’S MATCH CONDITIONS Tonight’s tie must reach a conclusion. If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes play, there will be 30 minutes of extra time. Should that not break the deadlock, the winning team will be determined by the taking of penalty kicks.

All I can say is that this will be a really difficult game. Runcorn are a good, well-organised team and will be hard to beat. We know that our players can be a match for anyone on their day; I hope today is their day! I hope you enjoy the game. See you soon!
