Professional Development, Continuing Education & Certification Programs Avalanche Training Level I Certification Course The American Avalanche Association level one curriculum is intended as a twenty-four hour course designed to give participants a thorough practical introduction to avalanches as a phenomena and the skill to recognize the key conditions responsible for avalanche occurrence. Additionally, participants learn strategies for prudent decision-making and techniques for travel in avalanche terrain that will increase the odds of avoidance and survival. Because avalanches are complex in nature and cannot be definitively predicted, the importance of skills enabling efficient avalanche companion rescue is also emphasized. Group Process & Facilitation for Equine-Assisted Mental Health This workshop increases the participant’s familiarity and practice with individual and group facilitation skills utilizing the horse as part of the group process. This includes practical issues related to the success or failure of the group such as: establishing and maintaining rapport, framing and structuring introductions to activities, isomorphism, facilitation of reflection and transference, maintaining a therapeutic container, risk management, challenges to working with groups, and the ability to differentiate between therapy and educational activities. Seven Weeks to Stronger Writing at the Prescott College Tucson Center This course is designed to help improve writing skills through a focus on the writing process. In a friendly, supportive environment, participants will work toward completing a writing project of their choice by the end of the session. Among other things, the course will focus on the writing process itself, looking at the writing project creatively and constructively, overcoming writer’s block, effective peer reviewing practices, and options for structuring writing. Wilderness First Responder Recertification Course This three day scenario-based course is designed as review and practice of evacuation and decision making guidelines. It also provides wilderness medicine practitioners with current updates in the wilderness medicine field. This course may be used to recertify Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT (wilderness portion only) certifications. You must possess a valid WFR certification of at least 72 hours in order to recertify through this course. This course may also be used to recertify WAFA certifications. The WFR Recertification Course is pre-approved for 18 hours of EMT Continuing Education Hours (CEH) by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS). Avalanche Training Level II Certification Course The avalanche level two certification class is a 36-hour seminar taught over a four -day period. The course is designed to provide individuals who have previously acquired level one training/certification (and at least a season of practical field experience) with an introduction to advanced skills in physical process analysis, observational interpretation, documentation, and risk management related to snow avalanche occurrence. Storytelling: Teaching on the Wild Side During the workshop “Storyteaching,” participants will have the opportunity to increase their mastery of the following storytelling competencies: listening skills, story knowledge, ownership of the story, relationship with the audience, and becoming a storyteller. These competencies will be supplemented with the following hands-on experiences: exposure to the differences between reading and telling stories, learning stories without memorization, class participation in stories, the use of manipulatives (puppets, felt boards, etc) in storytelling, and the use of folk tales, true stories, picture books in original stories in ways that foster growth in multiple intelligences. Participants will actively listen to stories and will participate in story-crafting and story-learning activities. Introduction to Eastern and Western Herbology This course integrates (blends) western herbology with traditional Chinese herbology – exploring and integrating the principles of Chinese herbology as they apply to western herbs. Participants learn about anatomy and physiology: A western (analytical) and eastern (phenomenological) view of functions and characteristics of organs and systems, touching on the Yin/Yang Elemental System of Traditional Chinese & Greek (Galenic) herbology. The course will include the properties, characteristics, and practical application of herbs. Participants will discuss herb tastes and effects associated with the human telemetry system. Advanced Eastern and Western Herbology This course is designed to build upon knowledge obtained through the Introduction to Eastern and Western Herbology course and is intended for professionals, and those wishing to become professionals, to advance in practical ways and to run a successful herbal nutrition business. In a practical "lab" setting, participants learn how to consult, analyze, and determine nutritional conditions and needs as viewed through traditional Chinese herbology. 8th Annual Gathering on Equine-Assisted Learning and Mental Health Best Practices The Gathering is dedicated to bringing committed professionals together to explore, discover, and develop their best practices in the fields of Equine-Assisted Learning and Equine-Assisted Mental Health. Speakers and presenters will gather from near and far to provide a platform for sharing experiential, theoretical, and foundational knowledge and experiences in their fields of expertise. Keynote speakers are Dr. Allan Hamilton and Dr. Jane Hamilton. Expressive Art Therapy Summer Institute The Prescott College Expressive Art Therapy Summer Institute brings masters in the fields of Expressive Art, Music, Dance Movement, and Art Therapy together with students and professionals for an unparalleled, intensive, learning experience. Participants gain experiential knowledge of theories, applications, techniques, and methods. The internationally attended Institute is the core foundation for students in the Expressive Art Therapy program at Prescott College. Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship The Lifelong Learning Center at Prescott College has partnered with the Bank Street Center for Social Entrepreneurship to create this innovative Certificate Program in Social Entrepreneurship. Designed to be affordable and accessible, this program will provide entrepreneurs the critical knowledge, experiences, and networks necessary to design successful small, sustainable businesses that can contribute to providing solutions for the challenges confronting communities today. In order to earn the Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship participants must take the first course: Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship. The introductory course is then followed by 4 other elective courses that focus more directly on various skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in business startup and ongoing management. Children, Youth, Family, Adult, and Community Programs Latin Online: Live Audio and Video Web Conferencing Latin Courses Join the Carmenta Online Classroom for Latin language courses focusing on the grammar, basic vocabulary, and idiom of the Latin language. Courses combine the advantages of a traditional classroom Latin course with the convenience of online web conferencing. The classes, which meets three times per week, are held in a live online classroom setting where all participants access the classroom from their home computers and continuously interact with the teacher and each other by means of live audio and video. Kindermusik® Family Time Family Time brings adults and children of all ages together, providing a dynamic and integrated musical learning experience for everyone. DreamTending This day-long workshop will explore the wisdom of dream images, helping each participant to expand her/his selfawareness and insight. DreamTending is a method of working with dreams that considers dream images as “living images.” Dreams are purposeful and help us to assimilate our life experiences in meaningful and creative ways. Dream Books Workgroup This four-session working group explores the wisdom of dream images, fantasies, and symbols helping each participant to expand self-awareness and insight. These fun, interactive, and experiential sessions include DreamTending, guided meditation, and creative artistic process. Participants come away from each session with a better understanding of dreams, fantasies, and symbols and a method of working with them on an on-going basis. Conversational Spanish II This is a 9 week Spanish language forum for those learners who are able to read and converse in Spanish using a variety of tenses and moods with command of at least an intermediate vocabulary. All conversations will be conducted in Spanish using articles from Spanish language online newspapers and blogs to stimulate discussion. The instructor will facilitate the discussions, offer corrections and comments, and make reading assignments as needed. The course is for learners who are not yet completely fluent but who wish to improve their speaking skills through authentic practice. Learners may be asked to make an oral presentation on a topic of their choice to prepare them for professional or academic situations that call for a high degree of fluency and accuracy. Conversational Spanish II at Prescott College Tucson Center Conversational Spanish II is a nine week Spanish language course, where all conversations are conducted in Spanish. Upon completion of the course participants will use additional complex oral Spanish forms, apply additional grammatical structures to oral communication, perform increasingly complex interpersonal transactions, and discuss additional geographical and cultural differences among Spanish speaking population. Making Native American Spirit Flutes Participants will learn about the history, culture, and traditions of Native American’s while making wooden flutes. This workshop includes hands-on woodworking, teachings of the spirit of flute making, and how to play a spirit flute. Participants will open the doorway to music and self expression. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Learn how to deal effectively and immediately with stress, fears, phobias, and traumas. This simple, but powerful self-help tool known as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), has also been used to reduce pain, lessen cravings, and alleviate negative emotions. EFT uses a system of tapping on meridian points to clear blocked/stored emotional energy. Participants will become familiar with the tapping points and take home a working knowledge of the EFT procedure. All are welcome, as this is a technique that can be used by anyone and for any issue. The course also includes information on how parents can use EFT to benefit children. SoulCollage®: It’s All in the Cards! Participants are immersed in the soul-satisfying process of SoulCollage®, where intuition is accessed and a personal deck of collaged cards is created. Together, each group member gets a taste of how the cards can be consulted for guidance with life’s questions and transitions. The SoulCollage® deck is the personal story of each participant.
