In addition, a person is influenced by multiple systems within their environment: their immediate social circle, multicultural communities, and the world. A special feature of Presence’s services is that not only do we provide direct services to the new generation, but we also train people within these environmental systems. With limited abilities and spiritual knowledge, a child or youth can hardly face secular values and a complex multicultural society (on his or her own). The moral and spiritual core of an individual begins to consolidate around age 8. If we can build up a child’s values with truth and spiritual guidance early on, cultivate his/her correct attitude and ability to live in the world, and train parents and other adults to become wise spiritual role models, then a child will not easily be affected by the culture. Presence’s vision is to raise up the next generation to become cultural missionaries who live with wisdom. Through training that integrates psychological and interpersonal skills with Christian values, we hope to increase people’s wisdom in living and flexibility in dealing with others, so that they may handle the challenges of a multicultural society, live out the Christian faith, and learn to become servant leaders who serve with love to build communities. Envisioning (2003 - 2011)

Presence started from a dream of Dr. Agnes Ip, who visualized the need to save the younger generation from being taken away by secular culture and values. Therefore, Presence was established to preserve the faith of young men and women, helping them develop a biblical worldview and social moral values; enabling them to live out their faith, to serve the community and to impact the culture and society around them. This is what we continue to call the cultural mission.
We are thankful: Youth need the support from their growing environment (including parents, family, community and church) in order to connect their faith to daily living. In these years, God had given us many opportunities to serve the youth and their families. Partnering with churches, a signature event of this period were our Family Conferences, in which we provided both parenting as well as youth training on relationships and personal growth.

Empowering (2011-2014)
RE:NEW was officially established in 2011, and implied the renewal of our response and commitment to God. This was a beautiful blooming stage for RE:NEW. We had a full-time RE:NEW staff, and recruited many dedicated and energetic volunteers. We saw commitment, creativity, diverse gifts, and leadership talents in this team. Their dedication in ministry brought great impact to a lot of young souls. Signature events like our Faith Seminar, Worship Nights, Concerts (in collaboration with different Christian organizations and artists) all began during this stage. RE:NEW magazine together with audio visual materials were published; and the 40 Days Devotional campaign was also launched during these years.
We are thankful: In the midst of a complicated world, we were impressed by the simplicity of the serving hearts and love for God that we saw among our team.

Equipping (2015-2017)
We focused on and saw needs in two major areas during this period, namely intergenerational mentorship and soft-skills training. We hosted two Intergenerational Ministry Seminars to promote mentors to walk alongside youth in their spiritual journey. RE:NEW also partnered with Presence Possibilities to provide soft-skills training for holistic growth in the areas of relationships, time and money management...etc.

We are thankful: Through this journey of ministering to the needs of the younger generation, we have come to better understand how to help them live out their life purpose according to their uniqueness created by God.

Enhancing (2018-2020)
To encourage the youth on their spiritual path, the collaboration of parents and youth workers has been the key to success. During this period, we worked hard to connect parents and youth workers. We launched an online class called “Healthy Dialogue” to provide very practical training on building mutual trust and communication skills among individuals, families and churches; hoping to bridge the cultural gap between two generations. We hosted youth ministry prayer meetings periodically, and even created a platform for intergenerational dialogue at our annual thanksgiving dinner.
We are thankful: With like-mindedness to serve the younger generation, God gathered together for us a group of dedicated people. We were so touched to hear them share sincerely about their successes and struggles ministering to the youth.

Engaging (2021+)
While RE:NEW is entering another decade, we will use more online and social platforms for our educational resources. We also plan to develop a youth version of our “Presence Life Planning Curriculum” in English. Through reflection and the transformation of lives, we hope that the younger generation can grasp the wisdom of living out their faith in a multicultural world, and carry on the legacy of our “Cultural Mission.”
We are thankful: God called us to start RE:NEW and has granted us a very blessed decade of ministry. The youth leaders who started with us are now mostly in another stage of life. We are grateful that many of them still love the Lord and have the heart to serve. By the grace of God, we hope to see one young generation after another grow and mature in their faith journeys.

Reminiscing, Reflecting, Renewing ...
- Serving in Presence & RE:NEW
Wicy Zhang I am currently the project coordinator at RE:NEW, the youth division of Presence. Going into my 4th year here at Presence, I have transitioned from one role to another and have learned many things alongside my coworkers and volunteers here. During these years, my most rewarding experience with RE:NEW overall has been working together with the team creating resources and events for the community. Coming from different ages and stages in life, we have managed to come together in this ministry. I have learned to be patient with each others’ abilities and learn to adapt to changes together. As a small team, even small challenges can seem big, but they are not impossible to overcome. Building trust in each others’ abilities to overcome obstacles together has been a meaningful learning experience. Getting to know more about the team members every day, and seeing the teamwork and effort put into this ministry has been a blessing to me. For RE:NEW specifically, the Faith Seminar has been our annual signature event for the youth from churches and the community. I am very thankful I was able to see it continue, even virtually, during this pandemic time. Moreso, during 2019 and 2020, we were able to host prayer meetings for youth pastors, youth leaders/workers, parents and others who have a heart for youth ministry. Through these prayer meetings, we were able to bring together different servants of Christ to share on hard topics like the struggles and successes of reaching out to the youth, how to approach a new normal during the pandemic, and social justice issues. Most importantly, these meetings allowed for the community to pray for one another and learn together about how to navigate youth ministry. These experiences have been very rewarding to me personally. With great things, come many challenges. Navigating through the pandemic has not been easy. Understanding the different needs of the community while trying to adjust to a new normal has truly been a learning and humbling experience. We saw God’s grace and guidance in every project and task. He has brought people with the right skills and knowledge at just the perfect time. God is good. Over time, I have seen myself grow, individually and together as a team at Presence and RE:NEW. Serving together has taught me to find the joy that comes through the challenges of serving in ministry; to step outside of my own needs and to learn how God wants me to see what others may be needing. As RE:NEW enters a new decade of ministry, I pray that God will continue to “re:new” us as we serve Him and help us find ways to reach out to the youth community. I would love to see RE:NEW continue to be a platform for youth to serve and worship God and to provide meaningful resources for youth leaders to serve in their ministries. Partnering with churches and families, we hope that more Christian youth and young adults will be mobilized to live purposefully for God’s kingdom!

Life Coach and Cultural Mission Editor/Interviewer: Lily Ma When we talk about coaches, we think of coaches who help athletes train and succeed in sports. Typically, these coaches were once athletes themselves, with abundant field experiences. They are also well-equipped to apply science and medical knowledge to the training. On one hand, it is to prevent injury to the athletes; on the other hand, it is to incorporate all kinds of knowledge to help athletes discover their potential and break through their own shortcomings to improve their chances of winning in competitions. With that being said, do Christians also need coaches? 2 Timothy 2:5 says, “Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.” Here, believers are compared to athletes. It means that if believers can find a coach for their lives, it surely is beneficial in helping them overcome obstacles and embark on the journey God has prepared for them with faith and motivation. In the meantime, one of Presence’s goals is to train life coaches. Hopefully, through this interview with Dr. Agnes Ip (see below), we will have a better understanding of how the concept of life coaches is rooted in Presence’s cultural mission. 1. How does the concept of life coaches connect to Presence’s mission? Ip: We live in a multicultural society. There is a big gap in thinking and core values from one generation to another generation, which easily creates differences, or even causes division. This results in conflicts and tension between the two generations, which hinders the passing down of traditional values. Presence’s mission is to help individuals and families bridge the gap between cultural differences of the two generations so they can live out their faith and values in Christ. It has always been our focus to nurture the younger generation and their environment (such as parents, families, communities, and church) so that they can grow to be leaders who can impact their communities and the world. This is a process that needs to incorporate spiritual principles and wisdom in living. A life coach is basically like a partner who comes alongside another person to help the latter reflect and apply truth in his or her daily life. 2. According to your observation, why do people nowadays deeply desire to have a mentor or life coach? Ip: To succeed and be mature is a common desire in people’s hearts, and for Christians, there is also the desire to live out the faith and apply the truth. However, in the process of meeting these desires in today’s complicated society, it is unavoidable to have things that you cannot understand and problems that cannot be resolved. It is natural to desire someone to come alongside you to explore and search for wisdom in life. A mentor or life coach is the person who can play that role. 10
3. Is it hard to find a life coach? Can discipleship leaders in traditional churches be life coaches? Ip: In a diverse society, it is not easy to find a suitable life coach. Even though you may find someone who is willing to help you grow, experience and wisdom is something that is impossible to copy because there are differences in geo- and socio-cultural background, values, and interpretation of the Bible among people. To make disciples is the Great Commandment that Jesus gave before His ascension, so there is no doubt regarding the importance of training disciples. Presence’s call is to help believers live out their faith with a community purpose so that non-believers will come to appreciate the character and life characteristics of Christians. This comprehensive approach to discipleship is always the focus of our cultural mission. Parents, fellowship group mentors, and discipleship leaders are all good candidates for life coaches. However, they all have their own limitations. Therefore, the integration of biblical teaching and life skills will help one develop the necessary qualities of a supporter. “Presence Life Planning Curriculum” was developed to meet this goal. On one hand, we hope to help leaders examine their own lives first, break through some of their own limitations, and find wisdom in living that incorporates biblical principles. On the other hand, the curriculum itself is also a tool to lead others in growth. It is a well-designed balanced system that a leader can use to walk alongside others and help others integrate faith and daily living. 4. Can we use life coach training in parenting education? Ip: Parents are normally used to interacting with their children like teachers. However, the older children get, the more they will resist parents’ instructions, as they feel parents just don’t understand. Life coach training can equip parents with the necessary skills to guide, as well as to encourage, their children to think and discover ways to resolve problems and develop wisdom in living. In doing so, not only is it easier and more effective to help children grow, but it also increases children’s approval of their parents, which promotes communication and builds their relationship. 5. What is your vision regarding the future development of Presence’s life coach training? Ip: First, we are praying that God will use Presence’s life coach training to guide believers and leaders to use biblical teaching in self-discovery, the search for wisdom in living, reflection, and transformation of lives. We deeply hope that we can continue our collaboration with churches and seminaries to equip leaders, seminary students, and even ministers in pursuing personal growth and drawing them closer to lay believers, so that they can be more effective in guiding and facilitating believers to grow in their faith. Our plan at this point is to launch the Chinese “Life Planning Curriculum” to build up the first-generation believers who immigrated to the U.S., and then gradually introduce the training to the community as pre-evangelistic ministry; at the same time, we hope that through the training of coaches, the curriculum can reach a broader and further audience. Our next step is to develop the English curriculum for the second-generation youth and adult believers. We hope that this is not only a tool for personal growth, but also a bridge for closing the gap between two generations. In the coming three to four years, this will be the definite goal of Presence. Believers and families are facing a lot of challenges living in a multicultural society. May God bless us with perseverance in upholding our cultural mission, training life coaches, and working closely with believers and churches to help people see and live the goodness of our faith.

A Course That Flipped
My Concept of Life
- Presence Life Planning Curriculum In early 2020, I signed up for the “Life Planning Curriculum” course at the Logos Training Institute taught by Dr. Agnes Ip from Presence. At first, I thought to myself, “I am ready to retire from work, do I still need to plan my life?” After the first class, I was attracted to it, and my narrow thinking was flipped around! Through in-class reflections and writing my own eulogy, I recalled Psalms 90:12, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Without having the concept of “begin with the end in mind,” what will be left at the end? Life is good, but time is limited, and there are many things that I want to accomplish, so how should I adjust the pace of my pursuit? Indeed, this course was not one where students “sit and listen” to theories, but it was a lively interactive course that consisted of games, small group interactions, reflective reports, and classmates’ sharing. Throughout the course, I learned to appreciate each individual’s creative thinking, accept different perspectives, and marvel at God’s guidance in each person’s life. Although life is not perfect - with tears, sorrow, laughter, and thanksgiving commingling - it can become sweet music with touching notes. The entire course was rich in content mostly related to daily life, such as intimate relationships, learning about stress, pursuing physical and emotional health, resisting temptations, and so on. Unfortunately, we often do not consider these issues seriously, and it is easy to ignore or downplay problems, thus creating a gap between our cognition and actually dealing with the problems. However, “Presence Life Planning Curriculum” (PLPC) is designed to link faith and everyday life in a down-to-earth manner; it does not just teach skills, but it challenges us to slow down in the midst of our busyness and learn to seek breakthroughs by self-evaluation and reflection.

Through the instructor’s guidance, we learned to handle problems in our lives by using the knowledge and skills that we have acquired and by exploring our abilities and resources; and we enjoyed our growth through the process. The characters and events in the Bible were no longer remote, but were connected to the storms and weaknesses in our lives. When faced with difficulties, we often hope that others or mentors, brothers and sisters from church can point the way and give direct advice. This course has allowed me to see a different picture: mentors are not machines that answer questions; instead, they can provide professional knowledge, skills and methods, and positive encouragement. In small group interactions, they can guide us to make good use of our own resources in order to find better and new ways instead of using a cookie-cutter approach for everyone. When leading the PLPC course, Dr. Ip combined her wealth of professional knowledge with her life and serving experiences, and she expressed sincerity, perseverance, and caring love in the grace of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). Dr. Ip’s example inspired me to think about in addition to embracing grace myself - how to live out my faith in this ever-changing world so that others may see Christ’s life-transforming power in me and be attracted to accept the gospel. Such vision and inspiration prompted me to join the PLPC Coach Training. I hope that through this training I can put my God-given uniqueness to good use, rise above past limitations, live more meaningfully in the “second half ” of my life, help others live with more wisdom, and become a blessing to others!
Joan Hsiung Presence has held many parenting workshops during the pandemic. One of the questions often asked by parents during this time was, “My child is playing video games and/or on the phone day and night, and whenever I brought this topic up, we ended up quarrelling, creating tension at home. What should we do?” Adults and youth sometimes have very different perspectives. In response to this, the “Healthy Dialogue” online course explores and analyzes various scenarios from the perspectives of parents, youth, and youth workers. The following is an example and partial analysis of one of the case studies taken from this online course: Regarding youth staying up late and chatting or playing video games online, many adults/parents would say, “This is bad for your health,” or “This is a waste of time.” But in fact, sometimes the youth are not chit-chatting but rather studying, therefore not wasting time. Parents may view playing online games as meaningless, yet youth think differently - they view this as a platform to build relationships with friends. On weekdays, youth need to attend classes during the day, complete many assignments, and attend extracurricular activities. They often lack time to build relationships. As a result, many youth hope to spend time at night communicating with friends; they may even feel that they can think better at night to meet their needs for self-reflection.
Since its relaunch in early 2020, the “Healthy Dialogue” online course received much positive feedback from churches, families, and individuals who had attended. One minister used this class at her church for youth workers’ training and parents’ growth groups. After taking the class on their own at home, the youth workers and parents gathered weekly to discuss the class topics. In this way, they could learn together, support and encourage each other, and apply what they had learned in their everyday lives. They felt that the “Healthy Dialogue” online class had multiple pros: streamlined content that enabled selflearning, reflective discussion questions, easy-to-learn practical skills to improve parent-child relationships, and content that was closely related to living in a multicultural world to help them understand each other’s cultural and value differences, thereby reducing misunderstandings. One of the youth workers originally felt that there was a barrier in communicating with the youth’s parents, and, at times, she even disagreed with their parenting styles. After attending the “Parents and Youth Workers” series of the “Healthy Dialogue” online course, she learned the importance of building a team with parents in ministering to youth. She also learned how to understand parents in light of their core values and cultural differences. She took the initiative to invite parents out for coffee and conversations in order to build relationships with them and to learn about their perspectives. Together, their goal was to build up the youth.
Course Features: In addition to providing guidelines for boundary-setting and communication between youth workers and parents, youth workers and youth, and parents and youth, this course also explores the root issues in light of core values and differences between western and eastern cultures; and it helps participants learn about their own responsibilities and roles. By the grace of God, we have continued to serve the different generations with all of our hearts and resources, even in the midst of the pandemic. In 2020, we did not organize any large-scale fundraising events, but chose to devote all our human resources to the expansion of our online ministry to provide multimedia educational programs to equip churches, families, and the next generation. The working hours of our co-workers has increased significantly, and there has been a continuous shortage of funds for Presence.
