W
hen the Plattsburgh Red Birds of the Empire Pro League take the field at the Cummings baseball diamond at Plattsburgh State, it will be the first time that professional baseball will have graced the baseball fields of the North Country. There have been exceptions, at times, when other levels of play have surfaced, giving the fans a look at a different brand of the sport. Records show that baseball made its initial entry in the four-county area of Clinton , Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties during the 1860’s, having an enthusiastic affect on every small community, where baseball games could be found played every Sunday. All shops were closed, and everyone wearing their best dress, attended and took part in cheering for their teams. The fields were roughly groomed, the backstops were made of chicken wire, umpires were called out from the stands, ball and strikes were called from first and third base, and foul balls, caught on the first bounce, were called outs. Uniforms were home made and team names included such as the following; The Chazy Rough Riders, The Turnpike Red Caps, and the Randhill Stars. All games were scheduled by challenges made between teams, usually for a sum of money, and in some cases, for as much as one-hundred dollars. The first organized leagues came about in the 1920’s and 1930’s, bringing a more formal approach to the game, including trained umpires, better equipment, and a change in some of the rules of the game. The first official league presented fans with a different level of skills. First came the City of Plattsburgh Twilight League (1920s), next came the Champlain Valley League (1927), and finally, the Northern League in (1931). The Champlain Valley League contained teams from the townships of Clinton, Essex and Franklin Counties. The Northern Capital Semi- pro League included teams from the four Northeastern counties of New York State, Vermont and Canada. Throughout it’s history, baseball leagues had intervals of starting and ending during different periods of time. There is nothing on record that identified the continued on next page

The fields were roughly groomed, the backstops were made of chicken wire, and umpires were called out from the stands. reasons. As an example the 1927 Champlain Valley League of 1927 did not re-start again until 1935. World War ll did stop play from 1942-46. The Champlain Valley League flourished after World War ll until 1959. It returned again, with a special interest, after the Vietnam War, and existed until 2002,
when the townships could no longer provide enough players. In 1949 the Adirondack League, another town league, came into play often giving a second team for some towns. The league continued until 1967 after the start of the Vietnam War. It should be noted that town team leagues in Franklin, Essex,
and St. Lawrence Counties existed during these same periods. The Northern League was initiated in 1931, and without exemption, was consistent for fifteen years, even playing during the war years. The 1931 Norhern League teams were made up of local players. In 1932, the same teams, Ausable Forks, Chateaugay, Malone, Lyon Mountain, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Burlington, St Albans, Rutland, Winooski, Ogdenburg, Carthage, Plattsburgh ,and Farmham, Quebec, Canada, took the status of a semi-pro level, filling their rosters with college players from through the northeast. During that period fans were not only provided with an advanced level of play, but with some non-baseball highlights. They included: in 1933, the Malone Stars played the Philadelphia Athletics before a crowd of 6,500 spectators. “Pinky” Ryan, a Malone player, thrilled the crowd with a home run. In 1935, One clergyman and several townspeople were upset when famed gangster, “Dutch” Schultz, attended the game with the village mayor and a prominent lawyer. In 1936, Babe Ruth took the time from playing golf at the Bluff Point Golf Course to throw out the first ceremonial ball, opening up
Thursday, June 22, 2017 the Northern League season. Baseball fans also had the pleasure, during those fifteen years of the league, of watching future major league players including Robin Roberts (Philadelphia Phillies), Hank Barowdy (NY Yankees), Steve Peek (NY Yankees), Bill Barrett (St. Louis Browns), George Sternweiss (NY Yankees), and Hall of Fame, Eddie Collins (Philadelphia Athletics). Collins played for the Plattsburgh Majors. The second phase of semi-pro baseball came to the area in 1951-52. Again, there is no record of why it started up. The 1951 version of teams included Plattsburgh, Tupper Lake, Potsdam, Malone, Gabriels, and St. Albans, The 1952 league roster included Burlington, St. Albans, Winooski, Plattsburgh, Gabriels, and Farham, Quebec, Canada. Harry Agganis (Boston Red Sox), Johnny Kucks (NY Yankees), “Rip’ Coleman (NY Yankees) And “Willie” Harrell (Cleveland Indians) were members of the league during this period. LONG ROAD HOME
How Baseball Made its Way Back to the Lake City.
By Mark Sudol Photos by Gabe Dickens
P
rofessional baseball is back in Plattsburgh. It’s something area fans of the game have been waiting for, but an idea that happened rather quickly. “It was just kind of a crazy circle”, said Plattsburgh State Baseball Coach Kris Doorey. He says last summer the Empire League was looking to move it’s Watertown, New York franchise. “And they thought Plattsburgh would be a good location”, he said. Plattsburgh State Baseball Assistant Coach Brian Burns, who has several connections in the league, was contacted by his high school coach Jared Carrier with the Sullivan Explorers in New York, one of the teams in the Empire League, and was asked about bringing a team to Plattsburgh. “I told him that it would be something we would love to do”, said Burns. The University already had the facilities in place and could use Chip Cummings Field, which has been home to the Plattsburgh State Baseball Team since 2003, and was home to the Plattsburgh Thunder, a former summer league team for Division I players. By late August of last year, all parties started the ball rolling and it was brought to the attention of Plattsburgh State Athletic Director Mike Howard, who was on board from the beginning. “My belief is the more activity we can provide for the campus and the community the better”, said Howard. “I am convinced that activities such as these, which provide
exposure to large audiences of people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to visit Plattsburgh, can be significant to our ongoing enrollment efforts while at the same time providing a tremendous boost to the local economy”, Howard added. In November it was official. The Plattsburgh RedBirds became the Empire League’s newest franchise. “I am absolutely thrilled with the RedBirds coming to campus and utilizing Chip Cummings field as their home venue”, said Howard. “I believe
it has the potential to provide a huge boost to campus during the summer months and it provides us with a great opportunity to showcase our facility to the RedBirds fan base across the entire Northeast”, he added. “It will be great not only to see our facilities getting used and get it out in the public eye but it will be great for families and people in the area to have something to do in the summer”, said Burns. “It definitely worked out for us here at the college and for the Red Birds”, said
PERU FEDERAL
Doorey. “They’d really like to make Plattsburgh the center of their league”, Doorey added. The Empire League is run by Eddie Gonzalez, who is a former minor league baseball player. Gonzalez was a high school teammate of Major League outfielder Matt Joyce, who is a partnership owner of the league. Joyce played for several Major League teams including the Tigers, Angels and Tampa Bay Rays. continued on next page Buy, Sell, Trade New & Used Gear.

6 Plattsburgh State University also believes the team will provide a number of opportunities to interns and students. “It gives a huge opportunity for kids that want to do something in the sports field. Whether they’re business majors and they want to get into business out of sports or professional sports, or whether they’re even in graphic design”, said Burns. Howard says he can even see how this will definitely help the Plattsburgh State baseball team too. “I also think this can provide some very exciting exposure for our baseball program which will only be positive as we continue to recruit potential student-athletes to SUNY Plattsburgh”, said Howard. Doorey has been the Plattsburgh State Baseball Coach since 2001 and says he never imagined he would ever see pro baseball back in Plattsburgh. “No I didn’t think that.” But Plattsburgh has a rich baseball history. Professional baseball players first came to town in the early 1900’s playing ball at Clinton Park off the shores of Lake Champlain in the Northern League. In the early 1970’s the Montreal Expos minor league team from Quebec City played an exhibition game at Bailey Avenue Field with a young catcher named Gary Carter “The Kid” against the Sherbrooke Pirates. Carter went on to finish his long career as a hall of famer. “Plattsburgh has a lot of baseball history it’s just not recent”, said Doorey. Doorey says this summer’s new brand of professional
baseball will feature players at a minor league Class A level that are hoping to get to the big leagues. “These are high level baseball players that are trying to prolong their career or get their foot in the door. And it’s exciting.”
also help some younger players growing up in the North Country. Doorey adds that there is already talk about possibly adding to the University’s facilities, and maybe someday installing lights at Chip Cummings Field. “The more we can support them, the more that they’ll help us”, he said. “These are high The Red Birds have set up a lease agreement with SUNY Plattsburgh to use the field and depending on the brand of level baseball play, Doorey says this could be a very nice agreement for players that are the team and the school. The Plattsburgh Red Birds open their season June 23rd trying to prolong and will play most of their games at home in the 4 team their career or league that includes the Sullivan, New York team, one from Old Orchard Beach, Maine and the other from get their foot in Rico. SUNY Plattsburgh Men’s Doorey says the team hopes to bring plenty of fun and baseball coach entertainment to the area this summer. “Any time you can bring something different to the North Country I think it’s Burns added, “These are some talented professional base- good”, he said. Opened in 2003, Chip Cummings Field is located behind the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse and surrounded by a wooded area known as Rugar Woods. The first game was held on April 19, 2003, when the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals swept perennial SUNYAC championship contender Oneonta as part of a doubleheader, 6-4 and 8-6. It has and continues to host community baseball games from the American Legion, Clinton Community College and others. Home to SUNY Plattsburgh’s Cardinals as well as the Empire League’s Plattsburgh RedBIrds, “The Chipper” became a reality with the generous financial support of Thomas “Chip” Cummings ‘56, a 1988 Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Chip Cummings Field has a permanent seating capacity to 500, a 20-seat pressbox with a filmdeck as well as a light-emitting diode (LED), wireless inning-by-inning scoreboard. The field dimensions are 350-feet down the lines, 402-feet to center field and 385-feet in the power alleys. The Plattsburgh RedBirds are proud to call this field their home for their inagural 2017 season and beyond!

Is there a better way to immerse yourself in a game than by scoring by hand? If you’re unfamiliar with the practice, or are a little rusty, here’s a quick primer: Preparing the Card Write the names of the players under the “Line Up” column. You can find the full RedBirds roster on page 9, along with the number that corresponds to their position: Pitcher - 1 First Base - 3 Third Base - 5 Left Field - 7 Right Field - 9
Catcher - 2 Second Base - 4 Shortstop - 6 Center Field - 8 Designated Hitter - DH
Following the action Say a batter hits a single—you would write 1B outside the diamond, and darken the line between home and first base. You’d darken the lines between home, first and second, for a double and so on. If the runner scores, fill in the diamond completely, otherwise, write the corresponding letters in the middle of the diamond: Strikeout- K Looking Strikeout - Backward K Walked - BB Single - 1B Double - 2B Triple - 3B Home Run - HR Flyout - F Double Play - DP Fielding To record outs, write the position numbers across the diamond. So a pitcher throwing to a first baseman would be recorded as “1-3” and so on. Double plays are similarly recorded (ex: “6-4-3”). Fly balls are indicated by their letter and the position number of the player making the catch (“F8” for instance, if caught by a Center Fielder.) Forced outs are indicated by drawing a line only halfway between bases.
