ORIGAMI

Co-modal transport solutions for long-haul journeys.

Through greater integration, co-operation and competition between transport networks, the project addresses the potential for greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact of passenger transport. ORIGAMI will also focus on users of the transport system, their demand for travel, their expectations and their reaction to the transport supply available. Citizens' travel behaviour varies across the EU and its regions is based on many factors and they need to be taken into account when assessing the potential effectiveness of any intervention. The general focus of ORIGAMI is on all those long-distance journeys which might benefit from more effective co-operation and/or interconnection between different modes and services. Development is currently hampered by institutional barriers, lack of investment, or failure to innovate. ORIGAMI focuses on investigating alternative futures and pathways for successful intermodal transport systems and a range of modelling approaches. This is done to forecast the demand for different modal combinations in different scenarios. Solutions are evaluated against relevant criteria for European transport policy. Just as paper-based origami requires a series of folds to create the desired shape, each case of transport for ORIGAMI requires different implementation of multi-modal methods.
