Off BytoTresatheErickson Farmer’s For some people, summer would not be summer without fresh produce to munch on. You can find seasonal produce at most grocery stores, but if you want to eat local, support area farmers and keep Mother Earth happy, shopping at the farmer’s market may be the way to go. Here are some tips to ensure you make the most of your experience.

Do some research

Find out what grows in your area at what time and know what to expect at the market. You’ll find asparagus in the spring, sweet corn in the summer and pumpkins in the fall. Whatever you find will be the freshest and tastiest available, brought to you directly from the fields. There will be no gassing to promote ripening or long-term storage or shipping. The produce will be left in the fields until fully ripened and then brought to market. While you’re at the market, ask around and find out what’s coming. That way, you can start planning meals ahead.

Make a list

Think about what you plan to cook for the week and write a list of the produce you need. This will help you stay focused while shopping and ensure you get what you came for. It will also ensure little of what you bring home goes to waste.

Go at the right time

For the best selection, go to the farmer’s market early. There will be more to choose from first thing in the morning. By late afternoon, the produce will be picked over and the best goods gone. For the best deals, go late in the day. Vendors may not want to carry home what’s left and drop prices to get rid of it.

Come prepared

Bring cash and a sturdy bag. Some vendors will not accept credit cards and may not have a lot of change on hand. Paying with small bills and change will make for a lot less hassle. Some vendors will not bag produce

Market

either. They will leave that to you, and you will want to have a sturdy bag that can withstand the weight of everything you cart home. Backpacks are ideal, as are carts that you can wheel around and place bags of produce into.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES DIOCESE OF HARRISBURG

Shop like a pro

PROVIDING

Walk through the market once before you make any buys. This will allow you to see what is available and where the best goods are. It will also give you the chance to add items you want to try to your list. Inspect produce carefully and choose the best. Don’t be fooled by deals. There is no point in bringing home a bunch of overripe bananas unless you plan to turn them into bread or muffins right away.

HOPE.

Farmer’s markets offer a lot, from fresh produce and flowers to homemade foods and crafts. Enjoy, but plan ahead for your trip to ensure you get some good buys.

41. Find Time to Decompress Z If you’re a morning person, get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal to wake up with your favorite coffee or tea and think about what you need to accomplish for the day. Z More of a night owl? Spend at least 30 minutes before going to sleep to unplug from technology and relax with a new book you’ve had on your list to read. Z Schedule time for exercise to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Planning workouts ahead of time will make you more likely to stick to them. 42. Write Everything Down Z Handwritten notes and to-do lists will reinforce your memory of the tasks you need to conquer. They also give you the option to look at what you need to do for the day and prioritize the list. Z Documenting your day not only keeps you organized, but also provides you with an opportunity to look back and reflect on your life’s accomplishments, memories and milestones from the year. 43. Balanced Diet, Balanced Life Z Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will help you feel great, and can increase your focus, energy levels and productivity. Z Plan out your meals ahead of time before going shopping by marking them in a calendar. This will give you more time during the week to cook and prepare meals, without having to make frequent trips to the store or feel tempted to grab take-out. Z Cooking your own fresh meals can help keep your bank account balanced, and is often much healthier than food from a restaurant. And spending time in the kitchen is also a stress reliever for some people. Source: StatePoint

Gardening: Practice Makes Perfect By Tresa Erickson

Gardening is not the simplest thing in the world. It takes time and effort, and lots of practice, to learn all of the tips and tricks of the trade. If you are just beginning, here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid.

Forgetting to prep the site Test the soil every year and amend it if necessary. Remember, soil is the foundation of your garden. If it doesn’t have the nutrients your plants need to grow, you won’t have a garden. 12

LittlePinkPages.com SPRING & SUMMER 2016

Choosing the wrong spot Gardens won’t grow just anywhere. Choose an area with good soil, light and water conditions. Plants can be hardy, but they won’t grow and flourish in poor conditions.

Choosing the wrong plants Plants won’t grow just anywhere. You need to know the conditions of your garden site and choose plants accordingly. Don’t expect a bunch of shade-loving plants to flourish in an area that receives full sun.

Planting too close together Plants need room to grow. Find out how much space the plants you select need and place them accordingly in your garden. If the label suggests the plants be placed a foot apart, do it.

Forgetting to mulch Mulching offers many benefits. It reduces evaporation, retains moisture, prevents weeds and keeps plants cooler. It also adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. Don’t dismiss the importance of mulching. Place a three-inch layer around all of your plants, shrubs and trees.

Watering too little or too much You do not have to water your garden every hour on the hour or go weeks on end between waterings. Doing so will cause your plants to rot or dry up quickly. To see if you need to water your garden, stick your finger about a foot down into the soil. If the soil feels dry, you need to get out the hose. If it feels fine, you can leave your garden be for a day or two. If you want a surefire fix, considering installing a smart irrigation system.

Conduct a bike check Choose the right size of bike and make sure it is in good condition. Hop onto your bike. How many inches are there between you and the bar? There should be a couple on a standard bike and five inches on a mountain bike. Place one foot on a pedal. Is your other leg slightly bent? If not, you need to adjust the seat height. Take a practice run. Are the wheels straight and secure? Do the handlebars turn easily? Can you stop quickly? If there are any problems with your bike, you need to resolve them right away.

Wear a helmet A bike helmet is your best defense against traumatic brain injury in the event of an accident. Don’t leave home without one. Get out your helmet if you have one. Does it meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards? Look inside for a seal of approval. Does it fit your head properly? The helmet should feel snug and sit low on your forehead, with the side straps forming a “Y” below your ears and the chin strap tight. Shake your head. Does your helmet move? If so, you need to readjust it. If you don’t own a helmet, buy one.

Be seen It is your responsibility to make sure you are seen. Wear Trained professional dedicated to protecting your privacy and helping you feel confident and beautiful.

fluorescent clothing when out and about, especially during times when visibility is low. Install front and rear reflectors on your bike and make sure they can be seen. Add a white front light for use at night if required to do so in your state. You might also want to consider adding a flashing red light to your bike.

Biking is a great way to get in a little exercise and have some fun, but there is a right and a wrong way to do it. Read on for some bike safety tips.

America’s first state domestic violence coalition, extending a lifeline to more than 3 million victims and their children

Follow all road rules Bikes are no different than cars on the road. Riders must follow the same traffic laws as drivers. You must ride with traffic as far right as possible and observe all speed limits and traffic lights and signs. You must also use hand signals to alert others to your actions and yield to pedestrians and other vehicles.

Be cautious Accidents can happen at any time. Avoid them by being super careful on the road. Leave your headphones at home and keep an eye out for motorists, pedestrians and obstacles. Use bike lanes when available and take a straight path. Do not weave in and out of traffic or change lanes without looking over your shoulder. Take extra caution in bad weather. Slow down and give yourself time to stop.

Celebrating a new baby is both exciting and busy. However, setting up the house and buying new baby items can be expensive.

Whether you are expecting a little one, or are shopping for someone else who is, these simple money-saving ideas can help give you peace of mind that everything is ready for the arrival.

Get Back to Basics

CHARACTER.

INTELLIGENCE.

STRENGTH.

STYLE. THAT MAKES BEAUTY. — diane von furstenberg

Stock up on the essentials before baby’s arrival. Items like diapers, wipes, bottles and baby lotion are easy to buy and are always useful. While you’re out shopping, pick up an item with each visit to the store to gradually build your stock at home. Take advantage of extra savings when baby items are on sale.

Take Care of Mommy

While everyone is excited about the new baby, it’s important to also remember Mommy. Take time to pamper the mom-tobe with extra attention and ideas that can make her life easier. If you’re buying for an expecting mommy, ask her what she needs. This will avoid duplicate purchases.

Make a Gift

DIY is a great way to save money and add your personal touch to any baby shower gift. You can make a baby gift basket with baby toys, bibs and a photo frame. Another thoughtful idea is to make a mom survival kit with snacks, scented candles, bath items and a new movie. Giving gifts with that personal touch not only saves money, but shows the new mom how much you care. Source: StatePoint
