g reet ing s from the

elcome to Penn State Harrisburg. Whether you are enrolling for the first time or returning to campus for another year of study, I hope that you will find the 2015-16 academic year filled with opportunities for learning and personal growth. Penn State Harrisburg is a dynamic and inviting learning community with excellent faculty, dedicated staff, and high-quality academic programs that span from undergraduate degrees to doctoral studies. We believe that our graduates are the greatest measures of our success as a college and that the strength of the college community depends on the involvement and contributions of each of its members. I encourage you to make a personal commitment to your education and to use the resources available to assist and support you. You will find many options to expand learning beyond the classroom, whether it is a study tour abroad, an internship in a regional industry, participation in student government, or involvement in community activities. There are several opportunities to participate in sports through our membership in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics and through club teams and intramural activities. We are busy continuously improving our campus facilities, most recently having added new laboratory and classroom space in the Educational Activities Building. We also are excited that construction has begun on the new 70,000-square-foot Student Enrichment Center which will house space for key new and existing student services. The building’s completion is scheduled for 2016, when we will also celebrate Penn State Harrisburg’s 50th anniversary. Surrounding areas are responding to the needs of our students and the campus community, as well. By seizing every opportunity, you will surely experience all that Penn State Harrisburg, Middletown, and the region have to offer. I wish you an enjoyable and fulfilling year. Best Wishes,

Makund Kulkarni, Ph.D. CHANCELLOR PRESS AND JOURNAL + PSU HARRISBURG WELCOME GUIDE 2015/16

We know how you feel. Strange town. New experience. What is this place, and who are these people? This is Middletown. Yes, you know that. Found it on a map. But what is Middletown? How are the people? What is there to do? What makes Middletown Middletown? We’re a small town with a decidedly small-town feeling. We are a friendly bunch who like community get-togethers and meeting our neighbors. Middletown is an old town by Pennsylvania standards – it was founded in 1755 – and you can see it in some of our architecture. And we’re located at the crossroads of major highways, along a popular Amtrak train line, close to a number of major cities like Philadelphia and New York. Want to know more about Middletown? We suggest you read our newspaper – the Press And Journal. We’re a weekly paper that’s been around since 1854, covering the local community – everything from high school football games to local government to the camping trips of the local Boy Scout troop. Even sports and news about Penn State Harrisburg. That building going up in the middle of campus? We wrote about it (it’s a new student center!). The men’s and women’s soccer teams? We publish stories about their games – and their place in the Capital Athletic Conference standings. The chancellor, Dr. Mukund Kulkarni? We know him! We’ve covered campus events – from the annual Lunar New Year celebration to a recent motivational speech by Kyle Maynard, the New York Times bestselling author and congenital amputee who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. There’s no better way to keep up with Middletown – or allow your family to share your experience in your new home – than to read the Press And Journal regularly. We are available in print, and online with our e-Edition. We’re like the used textbook you found for you analytic geometry class – cheap but vital. Only without all those equations. And vectors. We also have a Web site. Check it out: www.pressandjournal.com. Consider us a part of your new environs. As Sherlock Holmes told his sidekick, Dr. Watson, in “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons’’: “The Press, Watson, is a most valuable institution – if you only know how to use it.’’ We can’t help you with that calculus homework, but we can tell you what’s going on in Middletown. That’s cool, right?

Thinking of having a drink? You must be 21 years of age to legally drink or buy liquor and beer in Pennsylvania.

Bringing liquor into your room? You are forbidden from having alcohol in campus dormitories, regardless of your age. Live off-campus? Doesn’t matter. If you are charged with underage drinking, public drunkenness or other violation of state or local laws, you could face disciplinary action by Penn State. Party at your off-campus crib? If you serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 21, you are violating state law, and could face legal charges by local police and disciplinary action by Penn State.

18

Crack open a beer in your car? Carrying an open container of alcohol is illegal in Lower Swatara Twp., where most of the campus and private dorms are located – and you could face legal charges by police and disciplinary action by Penn State. So what if I do? Violate the law or university policy, and you could pay. It depends on the severity of the charge. Local and state laws provide for fines and other penalties. Penn State could impose discipline ranging from a warning to permanent expulsion.

Too much to remember? Just keep this number in mind: 21. It could keep you out of trouble.

i lu m n m e n P S U a e rc l a ss + upp “The most important advice that I would give to the incoming freshmen class at Penn State Harrisburg is to get involved with one of the many on-campus activities that they offer. Especially the commuters. I was a commuter for the three years I was a student at the Harrisburg campus. I never did get involved with the newspaper or one of the many club sports. I spent as little time on campus as possible. I had to work, or I thought I had to work, as much as I could with out interfering with my grades. Looking back, I missed out on all that the campus has to offer. Make the time in your schedule to be on campus with the other students! Those other freshman are as new and nervous as you are, they are looking to meet new people, build friendships and create memories just like you! I missed out on that. The other students and friends of mine who got involved made the most of their experience! I had a good experience at Penn State Harrisburg, but I could have had a great experience if I would have gotten involved just a little bit more.”

“Enjoy everything you can get out of the PSU experience. Buy student football tickets, visit State College, visit other campuses. I loved being at a branch campus that allowed me to have smaller classes and get to know more people, but I also loved the chances I had to experience beyond the local campus.” - sara egan (class of 2008)

“My advice to college freshmen is to establish good study habits as early as possible. I failed a class my first semester freshman year and had to retake it the next semester. That really woke me up and made me realize I had to study harder and find what methods worked best for me. I learned the hard way, but you don’t have to!” - brinley hall (class of 2009)

- richie vickroy (class of 2010) 28

“College is a chance for you to grow. These next four years will be the greatest, most exciting time of your life. The most important advice that I can give to you, is keep an open mind and your head up high. There will be times of struggle, times you’re scared as hell, but it will define you as a person. Push through and you’ll see that everything you worked so hard for was worth it.”

Penn State Harrisburg Office of Student Affairs 2012-13

“Try everything! Do things you never thought you’d do! Some of my favorite memories include fun spontaneous things like late night stargazing and mud sliding down a hill in a rain storm. Don’t let insecurities hold you back, you want to look back and say wow, I did it all, and even better, I did it sober!”
