A Greeting from the Chancellor
Welcome to Penn State Harrisburg. Whether you are enrolling for the first
time or returning to campus for another year of study, I hope that you will find the 2014-15 academic year filled with opportunities for learning and personal growth. Penn State Harrisburg is a dynamic and inviting learning community with excellent faculty, dedicated staff, and high-quality academic programs that span from undergraduate degrees to doctoral studies. We believe that our students are the greatest measures of our success as a college and that the strength of the college community depends on the involvement and contributions of each of its members. I encourage you to make a personal commitment to learning and to use the resources available to assist and support you. Avail yourself of the many options that expand learning beyond the classroom, whether it is a study tour abroad, an internship in a regional industry, participation in student government, or involvement in community activities. There are several opportunities to participate in sports through our membership in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics and through club teams and intramural activities. We are busy continuously improving our campus facilities, most recently having added new laboratory and classroom space in the Educational Activities Building and having enhanced our outdoor sculpture garden. Surrounding areas are responding to the needs of our students and the campus community, as well. By seizing such opportunities, you will surely experience all that Penn State Harrisburg, Middletown, and the region have to offer. I wish you an enjoyable and fulfilling year. Best Wishes,
Mukund Kulkarni, Ph.D. Chancellor

Understanding Middletown By Jim Lewis
Penn State Harrisburg has grown tremendously in this century. Before 2001, the campus was limited to upperclassmen and graduate students. But the university began to accept freshmen into its engineering curriculum in 2001, and in other courses of study in 2004 – and enrollment swelled. Once housed in an office building in Harrisburg, Penn State Harrisburg has become Penn State’s second-largest campus, second only to the main campus at University Park. Students have erased the artificial boundaries between college and town. You live in apartments in Middletown, you buy groceries in Middletown’s grocery stores, you wash clothes in Middletown’s coinoperate laundries. You now live in dormitories built off campus by private developers. You have become part of the town, and it’s a new sensation. You’ve arrived Not that Middletown has never seen change. It has. in Middletown, Middletown used to be a military town, with the Olmsted Air Force Base operating from its early origins in 1918 to its a stranger in a closure by the Pentagon in 1969. It provided support supplies strange land. From another town, for the Berlin Airlift in 1948 and 1949. Middletown used to be an industrial town, where everything another state, from shoes to steel was made. That fancy blue and gray mansion another country. at West Main and Wood streets is the last of a row of mansions You’re not sure built by industrialists as their home. Middletown partially burned to the ground in 1911, from what to make a freaky fire that began in the belly of a pot-belly stove left of Middletown, unattended as it burned trash in a downtown grocery store. The and, to be honest, town rebuilt afterward. Middletown is not Middletown still is adapting to the influx of Penn State sure what to make Harrisburg students, just as you are adapting to your new surroundings. Here are a few things you should know, to help of you. you understand Middletown: • Middletown is a river town, and many residents enjoy boating and fishing. You’ll see a number of boats parked in front of Middletown homes, particularly as you get closer to the river. Some Middletowners own summer cabins on a couple of the islands in the middle of the Susquehanna River – they’re so cherished that they are passed down to sons and daughters, and are rarely offered for sale. • Middletown is a patriotic town, a place where many of our war dead – back to the Revolutionary War – are buried. • Middletown is the oldest town in Dauphin County, where the rebellious “Middletown Resolves’’ condemning the British monarchy predates the Declaration of Independence. Middletowners took up arms, ready to defend against the Confederate Army, during the Civil War – but the Confederates invaded Pennsylvania at Gettysburg. In fact, Middletown was once called “Uniontown,’’ and the Underground Railroad is said to have passed through the area. • Many Middletowners have lived here all their lives. Their ancestors are buried in Middletown Cemetery, that vast cemetery that sits beyond the edge of campus. Respect it. • Those tall, gray towers in the distance? That’s Three Mile Island. Yes, that Three Mile Island. The stuff coming out of the top of those nuclear reactors is steam. It’s supposed to work like that. No, Middletowners don’t fear another accident – would they, or you, be here if it seemed likely? The reactor where the accident occurred is shut down, while the remaining reactor, still in operation, belongs to a different owner than the one who owned it during the 1979 accident. And Middletowners don’t talk much about the accident anymore. • There is no royalty in the nearby borough of Royalton, no high spires in the nearby borough of Highspire, and little steel is made in the nearby borough of Steelton – though steel for the Golden Gate Bridge was produced in Steelton’s sprawling (and now mostly empty) steel mill in its heyday. • Middletown is relatively quiet, and most Middletowners like it that way. There are more than 8,000 people in Middletown, yet it’s small enough that you can walk to just about anywhere in town. It is hoped you understand Middletown a little bit more. Middletown probably will get to know you better, too. Here’s a hint: Participate in town events – join in one of its volunteer neighborhood cleanups, or holiday parades. Welcome Middletown with open arms, and it will welcome you.

Getting There From Here By Jim Lewis
So it’s the weekend, and you need a break from lectures and labs – an adventure in Philadelphia or New York, perhaps, or a visit home to cure a touch of homesickness. Or it’s the semester break, and you want to celebrate good grades with a road trip to a more exotic locale. You’re in luck. It’s easy to get away from Penn State Harrisburg’s Middletown campus. The Amtrak station in Middletown, on Mill Street, is a short walk from campus. Harrisburg International Airport is a short drive or bus trip, or a long walk. The Greyhound station is a short bus trip or train ride to Harrisburg, and the Megabus stop at the Harrisburg Mall is a quick drive away. Public transportation is the easiest to catch of all – Capital Area Transit buses to Harrisburg stop on campus and on Union Street, Main Street and Ann Street in Middletown. Whether it’s by train, plane or bus, you can find deals that make it affordable – even on a college student’s budget. There are plenty of ways to get away:
Transit) will take you from campus to the airport’s parking garage. Seven airlines (Air Canada, Allegiant, American Eagle, Delta, Frontier, United and US Airways) provide daily non-stop service to 13 destinations, including Orlando, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Atlanta and Toronto. Thinking of a weekend jaunt to Disney World? Allegiant offers a flight to Orlando for as little as $57 in September, and a $63 return flight three days later on its website (if purchased well in advance). Visit www.flyhia.com for flight schedules and airline website addresses.
Amtrak – Trains to Philadelphia are plentiful. A one-way ticket to Philly from Middletown can cost you as little as $25. Some Keystone trains take you from Middletown to New York City in about three hours, and are affordable – as little as $56 one way if you buy them online in advance. Trains to Baltimore ($67 one way) and Washington, D.C. ($91 one way) are a little pricier, and often include a stop-over in Philadelphia ranging from 25 minutes to 90 minutes. Trains heading west to Pittsburgh (as low as $47 one way) are much more infrequent – sometimes there’s just one a day – and include a long layover in Harrisburg. To check schedules and buy tickets, go to www.amtrak.com.
Capital Area Transit – Just want to see the local sights? Take in the Capitol in Harrisburg, or catch a performance at the Whitaker Center or the city’s other theaters? CAT buses stop at several campus locations and drop you off at Harrisburg’s Market Square, in the heart of the city’s downtown and just down the street from the city’s Restaurant Row. The base fare is $1.25 for students with a college ID, and monthly passes within CAT’s regular zones are $35 with a student ID. You can buy a monthly pass at CAT’s headquarters, 901 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Transit News Stand in Harrisburg’s Transportation Center (the train station) on Monday through Friday between 4:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. and weekends between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.; CAT ticket kiosks at Harrisburg’s Market Square and Strawberry Square mall; and CAT’s website at www.cattransit.com.
Greyhound – You can leave the driving to them for a relatively cheap fare. Buses go to all the major cities – Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. – from the Harrisburg Transportation
Center (home of Harrisburg’s train and bus stations). Check Greyhound’s website for discounts – the bus line sometimes offers cut-rate fares online for tickets purchased in advance. Check out the bus line’s website at www. greyhound.com. Megabus – You can find a relatively cheap fare here, too. Its buses will take you to Philadelphia (for $15 or $20 one way), where you will have to make connections to New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., so expect layovers. Fares to Pittsburgh are about the same – $15 to $21 one way. The Megabus “station’’ in Harrisburg is actually a stop located in the parking lot at the Harrisburg Mall, near the entrance to Macy’s. Check out Megabus’ website at www.megabus.com. Harrisburg International Airport –You can practically walk to it from campus, though many public transit buses (Capital Area

apps and websites
you’ll need to survive college
By Noelle Barrett Press And Journal Staff
The transition to college can be a tricky one. Before you drift through syllabus week and find yourself dealing with serious course work, make sure you have these apps downloaded and websites bookmarked to help you survive college. The best part about these apps and websites: They are FREE! Mint: Living within your means can be a tough task for a broke college student, but Mint will help. Sync bank account and credit card information and the app does the rest. Mint shows how much you spent on textbooks, cheeseburgers and more. Set a spending limit for different categories, so you know when you’re one burger over budget. Website: http://www.mint.com; App: iOS, Windows, Android Evernote: This app will save your life. Evernote is easy and a must-have organization tool. Write notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders and so much more. The notes are completely searchable and accessible at home or on the go on all of your devices. Website: http://www.evernote.com; App: iOS, Windows, Android Google Translate: Trying to pass a test, or just want to impress your date ordering Chinese take-out? Either way, this app is for you. It gives you the ability to input using your voice, handwriting, or camera. Listen to translations spoken aloud, and save your favorites to sync with other devices. With over 70 languages, you can order your shrimp fried rice (pronounced Xi¯a chˇaofàn) with ease or, at least, understand your professor telling you the exam is tomorrow. Website: http://translate.google.com; App: iOS, Windows, Android Voxer: This app will leave you feeling nostalgic, taking you back to the days of walkie-talkies at summer camp. Developed by a Special Forces communications sergeant, the “push-to-talk” system is a quick alternative to calling or texting. The app allows you to talk to one friend or a group all across campus. Website: http://voxer.com; App: Android, iOS, Windows

CamScanner: With the click of a button, photograph documents and notes that can be turned into a PDF using this app. Website: http://www.CamScanner.net; App: Android, iOS, Windows InNote: This app is a virtual bookshelf of your notes, literally. Pick a cover, paper and ink, and take notes by writing or typing into this app. You can also add voice recordings, photos and more. The “books” are organized on a shelf, and can be shared. Use this app with CamScanner to make notes and annotations, and even write and highlight PDFs on your device. App: Android, Windows WiFi Finder: The name says it all. Find places nearby that have public Wi-Fi. Need a spot with Wi-Fi far away? Plug in the address and it will show you free Wi-Fi in the area. ROYALTON FUN FACTS: • Tiny Royalton Borough came to be when Port Royal and Furnace Hill were incorporated into a single borough in 1892. Two men in town – M. Luther Bausman and the Rev. H.G. Lehman – came up with the name while hunting squirrels in 1888, and word of their discussion quickly spread through town. When the two boroughs became one years later, Royalton was the favorite among townspeople. • Royalton was a producer of bricks in the early 1900s. A brick plant was built by investors in 1900, and grew in size in the next two decades. The Royalton Face Brick Co. made bricks for the federal government, Pennsylvania Railroad, Hershey Chocolate Co. and municipal works in Philadelphia and New York. The plant closed in 1967. • A popular fly fishing lure, the “Clouser Minnow,’’ was invented by borough resident Robert Clouser. You can get them in many sporting goods stores, or at Clouser’s residence, which includes a fly shop. HOW TO GET AROUND: • Royalton is divided by railroad tracks into two parts: “Lower Royalton,’’ as townspeople call it, is located south of the tracks, to the Susquehanna River, while “Upper Royalton’’ sits on the hillside north of the tracks. • Route 441: Known as Canal Street in Royalton, it is the major road through the borough. • Burd Street: The major road connecting the lower and upper sections of Royalton, it crosses over the railroad tracks thanks to the Judy Oxenford Bridge. The bridge was named for Oxenford, the borough’s longtime mayor, in 2010. • The police department and municipal offices are located in the borough building at 101 Northumberland St. Directions: From campus, turn left onto Route 230, which becomes Main Street in Middletown; at the square, turn right onto Union Street; turn left on Mill Street; turn right on Grubb Street and drive over the Grubb Street Bridge, which spans the Swatara Creek; turn right on Northumberland Street. The borough building is on your right. HOT SPOTS: • Kiwanis Park, a recreation facility on Route 441/Canal Street, includes a lighted baseball field, a basketball court, a playground, picnic tables, charcoal grills and a rentable shelter. Non-residents can rent the shelter for $60. Directions: From campus, turn left onto Route 230, which becomes Main Street in Middletown; at the square, turn right onto Union Street; turn left onto Route 441/Ann Street in Middletown, which becomes Canal Street in Royalton. The park is on your right. • Like to fish? Check out Clouser’s Fly Shop, 101 Ulrich St., where proprietor Robert Clouser sells his Clouser Minnow. He also hosts fishing trips on the Susquehanna.

LOWER SWATARA TOWNSHIP FUN FACTS: • James Burd, an American colonel in the French and Indian War, bought 500 acres of land in the township and built his home, called “Tinian,” there. • Lower Swatara was rebellious before rebellion was cool. On June 10, 1774, Burd and a group of men gathered at Tinian and drew up the “Middletown Resolves,” a declaration of independence from Great Britain created two years before the Declaration of Independence. “It is an indispensable duty we owe to ourselves and our posterity to oppose every measure tending to deprive us of our just rights and privileges,’’ it declared. • The township was home to a U.S. Army training camp, Camp George G. Meade, during the Spanish-American War. Much of the remaining site is now the site of Penn State Harrisburg, and Meade Avenue, a local connector to Route 230 and the warehouses behind the campus, is named for the camp. middletown FUN FACTS: • Middletown Borough is the oldest town in Dauphin County. It was incorporated in 1755. It got its name from the fact that it was midway between Lancaster and Carlisle along the popular stage coach road heading east to west. • The military leather “bomber jacket’’ originated in Middletown in the 1940s, made by Middletown’s now-defunct Rough Wear Clothing Co. during the heyday of the now-closed Olmsted Air Force Base (located where Penn State Harrisburg and Harrisburg International Airport now stand). • A famous Hollywood actress is buried in Middletown: Helen Twelvetrees was a star in the early days of talkies. Perhaps her biggest hit was the 1932 film “State’s Attorney,’’ in which she played the wife of John Barrymore’s mob-influenced prosecuting attorney. Her grave is in the Middletown Cemetery. HOW TO GET AROUND: • Middletown’s square is located at the intersection of North Union and Main streets, where the 7-Eleven sits. Most of the town’s roads are laid out in a checkerboard grid, running either north and south or east and west. • Middletown’s business districts can be found along its two major business routes: Main Street (Route 230), which runs east and west, and Union Street, which runs north and south and crosses Main. • The police department is located at East Emaus and Race streets, while other municipal offices, including borough council’s chambers, are located at the borough hall at 60 W. Emaus St.. Directions: To get to the police department from campus, turn left on Route 230, which becomes Main Street in Middletown; turn right on Union Street at the square; and turn left on Emaus Street. The headquarters is on your right. To get to borough hall from campus, follow the same directions, only turn right on Emaus Street. Borough hall is on your left. • The Post Office is located at 330 W. Main St., in the strip mall across the street from the student housing complexes at the south end of campus. HOT SPOTS: • The Elks Theatre, built in 1911, is the second-longest-operating movie theater in the U.S. It’s located on Emaus Street between South Union and Catherine streets. • Hoffer Park, a 10-acre recreation facility at the intersection of Mill and Race streets along the Swatara Creek, includes a pavilion, lighted basketball courts, lighted tennis courts, lighted sand volleyball court, picnic tables and grills. • St. Peter’s Kierch, a historic stone Lutheran church built in 1767 along Union Street. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s used occasionally for special events, such as a community Christmas carol sing-along (but if you go, be prepared: It has no heat or bathrooms). Directions: From campus, turn left on Route 230, which becomes Main Street in Middletown; at the square, turn left on Union Street. The kierch is on your left.

Hershey was born here, and later founded the Hershey Chocolate Co., the “company town” of Hershey, and Milton Hershey School. • In 1904, a contest was held to decide the name the U.S. Postal Service would use. HIGHSPIRE FUN FACTS: • Highspire Borough was laid out in 1814, making this year Highspire’s 200th anniversary. • No one knows for sure how the borough got its name. Some say the inspiration came from a “church spire” or steeple that rose above the town. Others believe it was named after the founders’ home village or city in Germany called “Spire” or “Speyer.” • Actor Don Keefer was born in Highspire in 1916 and resided in the borough until he was 18. Keefer appeared in the Broadway debut of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,’’ the films “Sleeper,’’ “Liar, Liar’’ and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’’ and the TV shows “Gunsmoke’’ and “Petticoat Junction.’’ He also performed in a wellknown episode of “Twilight Zone’’ with Billy Mumy about a boy who controls a town with his mind.
