Dreams do come true at CSBA show T here is something magical about attending an event like the 29th annual CSBA Home and Outdoor Living Show. It is not because we can see that spring is around the corner, because right now it is about 48 degrees at my office here in Danville. I have only shoveled snow a couple times so far this year. So while I am anxious for spring, so far winter has not been too bad. However, it is time to get out and mingle, see friends and contemplate what you might do around the house during the rest of 2016. This year’s event provides many opportunities. If you are looking to build a new home; make your current home bigger or just better; or add a porch, deck or garage, this is the place to be. There are lending institutions and designers. Oh, you want to remodel your kitchen or bath? Finish an attic or basement? This is the place to be. Do you need a road built, fields cleaned up, water well work or other utilities? How about new
President’s message
Jason Williams windows and doors? Need to replace your old roof or gutters and downspouts? Yes, you can find it at the show. Need a new gate, new fence or how about a golf cart? Satellite TV, solar-powered something or a home pressure wash? We offer solutions for all your building needs and wants at the CSBA Home and Outdoor Living
Show. Best of all, you can meet them, in person, one on one… something that you cannot get on the Internet. Let’s face it, when you look at getting work done at your home, you want to feel confident with the team you choose. Real people,
real faces and answers to your questions. Friday, Saturday and Sunday offer lots of activities for the show attendees. We have seminars, school building competitions (Dog Dream House and Mousetrap Car), an auction of excess or unused building materials, an LED lighting display and our 13th annual Lego building competition. There will be plenty of great prizes, donated by your local builders and suppliers. This year, each day there will be four drawings for gift cards and free meals and/or snacks from the women’s auxiliary and a $1,000 building assistance stipend. Some exhibitors will have special promotions during the show to save you money on your projects. And, there is the raffle that has really great prizes. We certainly hope you enjoy the show! Let us show you how you can make your dreams come true. Jason Williams CSBA President
CSBA supports youth and the trades BLOOMSBURG — The CSBA is supporting two building competitions at the 29th annual Home and Outdoor Living Show: Dog Dream House build and the Mousetrap Car build and agility match. Home Depot and Kreischer’s Cabinetry sponsor the two events, respectively. The purpose of these two events is to support young men and women who have an interest in the building trades and may choose them as adult careers. This year, the CSBA is honored to have Pam Slusser acting as director of these two building events in conjunction with the show. She is very active in the community and is the drafting instructor and SkillsUSA adviser at Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech. She is an advocate of the STEM program in schools and strives to help students be successful in
the career path they choose to pursue. Through her adviser role with SkillsUSA, she has organized and chaired competitions at the local district as well as the state level. Here are details on the competitions:

functionality, teamwork and skills used. Completed doghouses will then be auctioned off during the remainder of the show using a silent auction format. What is Central Susquehanna Builders Association? By the Central Susquehanna Builders Association
That is a good question. Our organization, the CSBA, was established in November of 1966 as a non-profit organization. It serves the counties of Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union. The CSBA is an association of members of the trades: plumbers, electricians, carpenters, excavators, masons and HVAC technicians and vendors serving the construction industry. We are homebuilders, remodelers, general contractors, installers of windows, doors, roofing and siding and many other things. To be in our select group, we require you to be a member of the National Association of Home Builders and the Pennsylvania Home Builders, to subscribe and confirm with signature, to abide by the CSBA’s Code of Ethics and to have current and proper licenses and insurance. The code of ethics is available for all to see at our website: www.csbapa.org. If your choice of contractor is a
CSBA member, he/she has been vetted at no charge to you. This is the year for our 29th annual Home and Outdoor Living Show and our 50th anniversary. If you were to take a survey in the Central Susquehanna Valley, the people you surveyed would either not know who we are or they would say: “They have an annual home show.” We are more than a legendary annual event. We also support our area’s youth who are looking to enter the trades. This year, we are having two building contests: Dog Dream House and Mousetrap Car. Teams from local high schools and middle schools will sign up to participate. There are no fees for participation from the schools or participants. The Dog Dream House building will be done by two-student teams. First-place winners will each receive $100, second-place winners $75 each and thirdplace winners $50 each. There will be a silent auction for the doghouses, with the proceeds
being returned to the participating schools. Home Depot is our primary sponsor for this event, with Garvey’s participating by providing flooring. The Mousetrap Car competition will also be done by twostudent teams. They will build their car and then participate in an agility test. First-, secondand third-place ribbons will be awarded. Each participant will receive a certificate and a surprise gift. This competition is sponsored by Kreischer’s Cabinetry. In addition each year, six members of our organization sponsor the Lego building contest. This year, there are two age groups: 8 and under and 9 through 12. The winners are rewarded, but so are the participants, creating an atmosphere of fun, competitive interaction. The judges have a tough time selecting first-, second- and third-place winners. At the end of the school year, scholarships are awarded to graduating trades’ seniors to help them further their educa-
tion. This is handled through the CSBA Women’s Auxiliary. The auxiliary uses the annual home show as a means for this philanthropy. Each year, the CSBA looks for new ways to engage our youth so that we may spark an interest in being a member of the trades and having a rewarding career in an ethical practice of their craft. The CSBA is also a traditional organization in that it has the interests of its industry as well as its constituents at heart. Through our memberships in regional and national organizations, we monitor proposed legislation that would affect the daily lives and well-being of our members and of all area residents with specific regards to legislative adoption of laws pertaining to permitted construction and materials used. For more information, contact the CSBA at PO BOX 409, Danville, PA 17821; 570-966-0625 (phone); 570-966-0140 (fax), csba@csbapa.org; or www.csbapa.org.

Smaller home designs can cut energy bills Courtesy of Brandpoint
Imagine being able to heat your home with no more energy than used by a hair dryer turned on low, or even going off the grid altogether. Thanks to smaller, carefully planned home designs, coupled with a superior insulation system, super energy-efficient small homes are growing in popularity. Once perceived as the housing of commune-living hippies in the 1960s, today’s small homes feature exceptional design and comfort. Although the average size of U.S. homes increased 57 percent in the past 40 years, more Americans are becoming interested in smaller homes designed to make the most of each square foot, rather than just building bigger. This trend is seen in the growing popularity of TV shows like “Tiny House Nation,” and dozens of websites and blogs devoted to the small house movement. Although there is no formal definition for these smaller abodes, The Tiny House Community website considers a home to be “small” if it is under 1,000 square feet, and “tiny” if less than 400 square feet. At the extreme, some “tiny houses” are less than 100 square feet — about the size of a camper. The secret to living smaller is optimizing the available space, and creating areas that are cozy instead of cramped. One key is making use of otherwise wasted space, such as adding storage under beds or under staircases, and doing away with non-critical features like the great rooms that sit unused in many homes. Small home designers are able to create a sense of openness and light in the small footprint by including numerous windows or mirrors, as well as other design touches such as lofts and curved ceilings. In essence, in the smaller spaces there is clear purpose for every element in the home. “Attention to the small gives character to the whole,” says acclaimed architect and simple-living proponent, Sarah Susanka. Susanka is author of the book, “The Not So Big
Super energy-efficient small homes are growing in popularity. House.” For many small home enthusiasts, the appeal is not only a simpler life in a smaller, un-cluttered home, but also saving money and living green by consuming much less energy. All else being equal, it takes less energy to heat and cool a smaller home than a larger one, but many small homes also use an advanced building technique for high energy efficiency and quick construction — structural insulated panel (SIPs). “SIP panel walls and roofs combine the insulation and structure in one unit,” says Joe Pasma, technical manager for Premier SIPs, North America’s largest SIP panel manufacturer. “The end result is much lower air leakage and continuous insulation, which helps reduce heating and cooling energy use up to 60 percent compared to other building methods — whether in a tiny house or a standard-sized one.” As visually interesting home designs are important to many small home dwellers, Pasma notes that SIP panels can be used in virtually any architectural style. An increasing number of builders in the U.S. specialize in tiny house designs, with many of them offering SIP panel homes. These range from do-it-yourself kit homes up to

Choose best remodeling contractor Courtesy of Brandpoint
A remodeling project is one of the most invigorating lifestyle changes a homeowner can make. However, trusting a contractor with both your home and your money can feel overwhelming. Spare your time, money and sanity by following these steps for choosing the best remodeling contractor: 1. Decide what you want out of your newly remodeled home. Start thinking about goals, amenities and a rough timeline, making sure you can clearly articulate your ideas to a contractor. Idea centers, such as Houzz or the James Hardie Photo Showcase, can serve as inspiration for kick-starting your remodeling project. This phase is also ideal for researching sustainable building products. By using green products, homeowners save money on heating and cooling costs, and builders can decrease construction’s carbon footprint. 2. Ask for advice. You’re not the first person to remodel your home, so don’t go through the process alone. Talk to friends, relatives, neighbors and coworkers about their remodeling experiences. In addi-
tion to collecting referrals, ask targeted questions about how those contractors communicated throughout the process and mitigated any setbacks. If you know a building inspector, ask which contractors regularly meet code requirements. 3. Research and contact businesses. Start gathering information on your referrals and local prospects by visiting their websites or making phone calls. Make sure these remodeling contractors have the required licenses, liability insurance and ability to obtain local permits for your project. Most will also tell you if they belong to a professional association such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry or National Association of Homebuilders. For exterior remodeling, the James Hardie Building Products website includes a contractor locator tool homeowners can use to search for reputable contractors. The Better Business Bureau also issues warnings about those that might not be trustworthy. Through your research, select three to five potential contractors. 4. Set up meetings with contractors. After identifying your top candidates, schedule face-to-face meetings with Brandpoint

Ask questions and make sure communication is fluid and straight-forward. How many projects does the contractor handle at one time? Are his or her past projects similar in scope to yours? More of these questions can be found at the James Hardie Hire a Pro resource center. If you find a particular meeting goes especially well, ask for references and a bid on your project. 5. Compare bids and references. Think of this step as putting the finishing touches on your selection process. When contacting references, ask them to rate their satisfaction with the project. cost breakdown of labor and building materials. The best contractor is not always the cheapest. Now’s the time to find out if a contractor uses the best quality products that meet your budget. For instance, does he or she install fiber cement siding on home exteriors, or, opt for the cheaper, less durable vinyl siding? Make sure contractors are choosing longlasting products that will stand the test of time. 6. Choose your contractor and sign a contract. With all of your research on hand, select the best contractor for your project. After confirming with the contractor, draw up a contract that includes a description of the work, products to be used, cost and completion dates and let the project begin.
