Make unique gift choices to enhance home Courtesy of Brandpoint

As you strive for a happy holiday, do all your gift ideas seem ho-hum at best? It’s a common holiday conundrum: You want to show all your friends and family that you care, but finding the right present seems impossible. If you feel stuck, look for gifts that will enhance the home, because there is truly something for every personality. Skip the candle and coaster set and instead check out these unique, personal items that add fun and flair to any home, big or small. • Aquariums: Traditional rectangular aquariums are bulky and cumbersome, but now there are stunning new tabletop options perfect for everyone on your list. The biOrb TUBE 15 aquarium is designed to give a 360-degree view and features multi-color LED lighting with remote control for an eye-catching way to enjoy fishkeeping. The TUBE 15 is also a low-maintenance gift given its five-step filtration that maintains a clean, healthy aquatic environment to achieve ideal pH balance. Enjoy the dazzling sight of bubbling water and an impressive light show all year long. • Decorative pillows and throws: Winter is the perfect time to cozy up at home, but that tattered old blanket just won’t do. You can encourage friends and family to get some much-needed R&R by gifting them new pillows and a fluffy throw blanket. Fun pillows are available in unique designs that feature different pictures, words or phrases, so it’s easy to find something just right for that someone special. Add a coordinating throw blanket and get ready to cuddle through all of winter’s chilliest nights. • Restored photographs: Going for tears of joy? One home decor gift that will tug at the heartstrings is framed photography. A nice portrait is always a great gift option, but this year surprise your loved ones by finding old photography and getting it restored. That photo of Grandpa fishing or

Place in a nice frame and it is guaranteed to be an unforgettable gift that will be proudly displayed for years to come. • Personalized signs: One of the year’s most popular decorating trends is custom signage. Often made from wood, these signs are painted or carved with your preferred message. That means it can be customized to suit even the most difficult people to shop for. Popular verbiage on a custom sign includes the family surname with an “established” date. You could also include a literary phrase or personal mantra that your loved one enjoys. Because the message is personalized, you can make it perfect for everyone on your list. • Himalayan salt lamps: When the holiday festivities are over, it’s time to settle in

and deal with Old Man Winter until springtime arrives. The soft glow of salt lamps brings a warmth to rooms on the dreariest days. Made from large pieces of salt, these lamps have an almost rock-like quality with veins of white, pink and peach throughout. Some people claim they also help maintain good indoor air quality and help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). No matter what, they are a happy addition to any room: bedroom, office or living room. The person who has everything? Check. The hard-to-shop-for teen? Check. The newlywed couple settling into their home? Check. Home decor gifts are great for everyone on your holiday gift list, and best yet, they won’t be like anything else your loved ones receive, making your gift memorable and truly cherished.

Offer your holiday hosts a token of appreciation Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

The season of entertaining is in full swing, with family, friends and coworkers gathering at various locales to enjoy some holiday spirit together. When celebrating the holidays, it is customary to offer hosts a token of appreciation. During the season of giving, it may be challenging to find a gift that stands out in the crowd. However, some of the best gifts for hosts focus on their love of entertaining family and friends. • Music speaker: Music often is an integral part of entertaining, but not every party host

is equipped with a stellar sound system. Today’s Bluetooth-enabled music speakers run the gamut from handheld options to speakers that combine mood lighting with sound to large units. Shoppers can find speakers that suit the space hosts have to work with and ones that won’t bust shoppers’ budgets. • Bar tools: Toasting the season (or any occasion) is par for the course at a party or get-together. Avid entertainers can benefit from having new bar tools, such as mixers and serving glasses, to make sure guests’ cups are never empty. • Party games: Keeping

guests content often involves having plenty of beverages and food available. However, for the hosts who want to go above and beyond, game night or other entertainment-based activities can add flair to special events. Board games, physical games (like horseshoes or bean bag tosses), games for video gaming systems, and even karaoke machines can fit the bill. • Cake stand or serviceware: Hosts may want to put foods on display, and a decadent cake stand or serving plate will make occasions more glamorous. • Spa gift certificate: After

the guests have come and gone, hosts will no doubt need some time to rest and recuperate. This can be achieved more easily with a gift card to a nearby spa or massage therapist. • Cleaning service: The gift of a cleaning service saves hosts from having to do the post-party cleanup, and giving such a gift in advance of the party can be the helping hand hosts need as the chore list grows in the days before the party. Holiday hosts open their homes to a bevy of guests. Invitees can show their appreciation by gifting their gracious hosts with something special.

Giving experiences can equal a year of entertaining and enjoyable memories for gift recipients.

Consider giving an experience this year Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

The holidays are a season for decorating, entertaining and, of course, figuring out what to get all of the special people on gift lists. Instead of navigating crowded stores to find a gift that may just take up space in their loved ones’ closets, more and more people are giving the gift of an experience. According to Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a professor of psychology at Cornell University, new belongings will only be exciting at first, but then people adapt to them. If shoppers’ goals are to prolong those feelings of excitement, then personal experiences can be more effective than material goods. When shopping for those who seemingly have everything, a gift of an experience may be a smarter choice, especially if the experience is something the recipient may never have done before or wouldn’t think to get for him or herself. For those who need a little inspiration, the following are some ways to treat loved ones to special experiences. • Wine tasting: Find a local winery that offers tours and other wine-tasting experiences. Many areas of the country not particularly known as meccas for wine are still homes to local wineries. Treat a loved one to a day at a nearby winery or vineyard, bringing along

some snacks, such as bread and cheese, to pair with the wines. • Fitness class party: Enable fitness enthusiasts to try out new and trendy exercise classes by giving the gift of a class or membership. Consider tagging along to a class so the recipient doesn’t have to go it alone. • Head in the clouds: Book a trip aboard a sight-seeing plane, balloon or helicopter for the high-flying thrill-seeker on your holiday shopping list. Contact a nearby airport or sightseeing company to find out what is available. Some tours circle national monuments and points of interests, providing more bang for the buck. • Action and adventure: There’s adventure to be had on land as well. Racing fans can sit behind the wheel of a race car and lap the racetrack like their favorite NASCAR stars. Those who prefer getting a little wet with their wild may enjoy a whitewater rafting excursion. • The choice is theirs: If you’re stuck on what to get, let recipients choose their own experience. Companies like Cloud 9 Living enable individuals to choose their experiences from a wide variety of options. Giving experiences can equal a year of entertaining and enjoyable memories for gift recipients.

Being early bird can help holiday shoppers between Thanksgiving and Christmas. In a survey examining debt associated with the holiday season, MagnifyMoney found that the average holiday debt in 2016 was slightly more than $1,000. Credit card debt can negatively affect consumers’ credit scores, especially if balances are not paid in full when bills are due. Shoppers can avoid such situations entirely by shopping early using only disposable income to make purchases instead of credit cards. Such financial flexibility may not be possible for shoppers who wait until the holiday season has begun to start shopping.

Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

Come the end of the often hectic holiday shopping season, many people resolve to begin shopping earlier in the following year. While such resolutions can be hard to keep, shoppers would be wise to consider the myriad ways they can benefit by starting their holiday shopping earlier than they’re typically accustomed to doing.

Deals The more time shoppers give themselves to find gifts for their loved ones, the more time they have to comparison shop and find the best deals. Retailers often offer steep discounts during the holiday season, but such deals may pale in comparison to those that can be had throughout the rest of the year. Holiday shoppers who begin shopping early can always skip buying in late summer or autumn if they think better deals can be had once the holiday season begins.

Shoppers can save more than money by starting their holiday shopping in advance of the holiday season. In spite of the popularity of online shopping, many people still visit traditional brick and mortar retailers to do their present buying. Such stores can be overwhelmed with shoppers between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leading to long lines and lengthy searches for parking. Shoppers are far less likely to encounter big crowds and crowded parking lots if they get their shopping done before the dawn of the holiday season, saving themselves substantial amounts of time as a result. Shoppers who commit to getting their holiday shopping done early can save money and time and protect their financial reputations as well.

These are a few of Oprah’s favorite things By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Oprah Winfrey’s back with her longest holiday gift list ever at 102 of her favorite things. Ranging in price from free (downloads of her Super Soul Conversations podcast) to $2,000 (for a 55-inch TV that morphs into a painting), Winfrey’s annual list will be featured in the December issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, including discount codes to plug into Amazon or the websites of the companies themselves. Winfrey’s elves, the magazine’s editor-at-large Gayle King and creative director Adam Glassman, spend much of the year scouting items for the list, with Oprah herself making the final decision on what to include for everyone — men, women, pets and kids — in apparel, tech, home goods, beauty, food and other offerings. “What Oprah always challenges us to do is to find some new brands, some indie brands, mom-and-pop kind of brands. We always have a fabulous mix of tried and true, and big people, but we also like to infiltrate new brands and also brands made in the USA,” Glassman told The Associated Press in a recent interview. Starting Thursday, items on the list are available at Amazon. com/Oprah. A look at a few of Oprah’s favorite things for 2017:

This bottle for sipping is made by a woman-owned, small-batch distillery in Mexico and is her go-to. It’s a blend of silver and extra-aged tequila. The sipping bottle is pricey at $285. Oprah’s also offering a tequila blanco at $75 for mixing into cocktails. • YELLOW LEAF HAMMOCKS: Oprah once bought a house because it had a hammock hanging in the yard, Glassman said. These classic doubles are made in Thailand by artisan weavers. “When she stopped doing the daily talk show everyone was like, what are you gonna do and she goes I’m just gonna be laying in my hammock reading a book,” Glassman said. “That lasted about two days.” $199. • THE ECHO SHOW: Alexa has gone video. Five tips to choose fun and safe toys for holidays By Joan Lawrence

For North American Precis Syndicate

This holiday season, you can pick out toys that are both fun and safe with these simple tips: 1. Follow the age guidance and other safety information on toy packaging. The age grading isn’t about how smart a child is — it’s based on the developmental abilities of children at a given age and the specific features of the toy. 2. Choose a toy that matches your child’s age and interests. The perfect toys are the ones that are right for your children. If a toy is too advanced, they’ll become frustrated, and if it’s too simple, they’ll get bored. Providing kids with ageappropriate playthings will help them stay safe and reap the full benefits of playtime.

3. Avoid toys with small parts for kids under 3. Items around the home that have small parts are fine for older kids but can pose a choking hazard for children under 3 (or kids who still mouth objects). Toys with small parts have a warning label on the packaging, so keep a careful eye out as you shop. 4. Shop at a retailer you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses will be knowledgeable about age-appropriate toys. At garage sales, secondhand stores or temporary “pop-up” retailers, sellers may not know about the latest safety information and certified products — and may not be around should an issue arise later on. 5. Visit PlaySafe.org for more safety advice. Once the gifts are unwrapped, visit www.PlaySafe.org for tons of advice on toys and play. It’s a comprehensive, free resource

that includes detailed tips on small parts, advice for new parents, how to keep kids safe during active play, information on battery and magnet safety, the importance of parental supervision during play and much more. It’s important to know that all toys sold in the U.S., no matter where they’re made, are subject to strict federal safety laws and standards. So just be sure to pick out toys that match a child’s age and interests and then get on the floor and play with your kids. Showing little ones how to properly use a toy can be the best way to make sure they understand how to safely enjoy it. Joan Lawrence, aka the “Toy Safety Mom,” is a lifelong child safety advocate with more than 20 years of experience in the toy industry and senior vice president of standards and regulatory affairs at The Toy Association.

Those who have hunters, anglers or outdoorsmen on their holiday shopping lists may find that gifts facilitating these specific pursuits can be the ideal fit this holiday season.

Take shot at right outdoorsmen gifts Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services’ 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and WildlifeAssociated Recreation unveiled that more than 90 million United States residents aged 16 or older participated in some sort of wildlife-related activity that year — the most recent year on record. Wildlife recreationists spend nearly $150 billion per year on their activities. With this in mind, those who have hunters, anglers or outdoorsmen on their holiday shopping lists may find that gifts facilitating these specific pursuits can be the ideal fit this holiday season. Rather than scouring the mall for hours, a visit to the nearest sports outfitter can yield a bevy of appropriate gift ideas. For some inspiration, consider these gifts for the outdoor enthusiast. • Binoculars: Scoping out territory and looking for game is often part of the hunt. A set of durable new binoculars can give hunters an edge. • Heated shoe insoles: Hunting and fishing often require long wait periods — sometimes in chilly weather. Heated shoe insoles and hand warmers can keep outdoorsmen warm. • GPS/digital watch: Although many smartphones tell time and offer GPS services, lightweight watches may be more convenient than phones. For example, the Garmin

Fenex Watch is waterproof and offers such functions as GPS, an altimeter, barometer and a digital compass. • All-season tent: Camping out is not just a summer activity. A tent that is rated to withstand various temperatures and conditions can be an asset. • Waders: Anglers sometimes need to get up close and personal with their prey. A sturdy pair of breathable waders is ideal for those who venture out of the boat or off of the coast. • Wool socks: They may be a basic item, but hikers, hunters and other sports people can’t stock up enough on warm, sweat-wicking wool socks that will keep their feet comfortable and dry on all excursions. • Folding knife: Knives are ideal for cutting fishing line, twigs for a campfire and much more. A sturdy, quality knife that fits easily in a pocket or backpack is a must-have for hunters, campers and anglers. • Water-resistant pouch: A day on the boat or near the water requires gear that can get wet without soiling items stored inside. Picture-perfect ideas for photographers Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

Photography has long been a great way for talented artists to express themselves while providing glimpses into the world and the people who inhabit it. Since the dawn of social media, taking pictures has become incredibly popular, as platforms such as Instagram and Facebook have inspired millions across the globe to point and click. With holiday shopping season upon us, chances are many shoppers have an amateur photographer on their shopping list. Fostering a love of photography in a friend or family member may encourage them to see the world in ways they never imagined possible. Holiday shoppers with little or no knowledge of photography may want to consider the following gift ideas for their loved ones with a passion for taking photos.

Photography classes Photography is both an art form and a skill, and novice photographers will no doubt appreciate a chance to learn more about their hobby. Beginner photography classes can teach amateurs the basics of photography, including expo-

Look for more advanced classes for photographers whose skills are more developed. Advancements in photography continue to be made, so giving a loved one the opportunity to stay abreast of the latest technological developments and techniques is a gift any photography fan would appreciate.

many people, but there are no rules stating hobbies cannot earn their practitioners some money. If you believe your loved one’s work can earn him or her some money, the gift of a place to showcase their work can be both rewarding and potentially lucrative. Holiday shoppers who want to encourage their loved ones can give a subscription to a site such as YourArtGallery.com. For the cost of a monthly subscription, artists who contribute to YourArtGallery.com can offer their work for sale to art buyers from all walks of life, ranging from collectors and curators to designers and individual photography enthusiasts. Unlike traditional galleries that charge as much as 50 percent of image royalties for each piece they sell, YourArtGallery.com members earn 90 percent of all image royalties.

Gear

Photography is a rewarding hobby, but it can be expensive, especially when it comes to gear. Professional photographers tend to own various cameras, so if your budget allows, consider giving a new camera to your loved one this holiday Showcase season. If your knowledge of Photography is a hobby for cameras is limited, consult a

salesperson at a local photography store. Do your homework beforehand by researching the kinds of photos your loved one most enjoys taking, whether it’s shots of nature or live action sporting events or whatever subject matter stokes his or her passion. If a camera is beyond your budget, consider a gift card to a photography store that can offset the cost of your friend or family member’s next camera. Or consider other gear, such as a new camera lens, a tripod or a camera bag.

External hard drive Photography enthusiasts tend to take lots and lots of pictures, and even digital pictures can monopolize available storage space, including cloud space. An external hard drive gives photographers a place to store their photos, and the peace of mind that those photos are unlikely to disappear should their smartphone, tablet or computer be damaged. Photography is a rewarding hobby that brings joy to millions of people across the globe. This year, shoppers can make the family photographer’s holiday season that much more special by finding a gift that will allow them to get even more out of this fulfilling hobby.

Toys that are likely to top kids’ lists this year Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

Christmas and Chanukah may be celebrated toward the end of the year, but at the annual New York Toy Fair, the season for thinking about toys begins in February. This popular convention unveils the industry’s hottest trends and toys, attracting more than 1,000 exhibitors. The Toy Fair, and recommendations by toy and game industry experts around the world, like Dr. Toy and The Toy Insider, help cement which toys are likely to end up on kids’ holiday wish lists. For those shoppers who fell behind the curve and missed out on last year’s break out “Hatchimal” hit, the following figure to be the most coveted items for this year of giving. • Lego Boost: Lego continues to reinvent itself, offering add-ons to its popular building brick model. Lego Boost takes advantage of the STEM trend by enabling children to build and code any of the five

models of building sets. These include a cat, robot, guitar, rover, and building machine. Or, they can use the pieces to create their own designs. The models work with an app and can be coded to make different motions and sounds. • Melissa & Doug Scientist Role Play Costume Set: Melissa & Doug is widely recognized for its high-quality wooden games sets and puzzles, but the company also delves into imaginative play costumes. This scientist role-play costume includes a beaker, a test tube, a lab coat, experiment cards, and other ingredients necessary to fuel interest in the sciences. It can be a welcome addition to any dress-up collection. • Nerf N-Strike Elite: Nerf brand has been popular for decades, and the company continues to churn out popular items for boys and girls. The N-Strike Elite series has a number of incarnations to tempt sharpshooters. Nerf’s new AccuStrike line is designed to improve accu-

racy with specially crafted darts that sail straighter than the original darts. • CollEGGtibles: Building upon the Hatchimal craze of last Christmas and early this year, Spin Master offers an addition to the very popular collectible toy niche. CollEGGtibles are much smaller than Hatchimals, but are equally fun. Smaller eggs hatch to reveal various colorful critters inside. Kids are apt to want to collect them all. • Pie Face Sky High: Hasbro keeps reinventing the Pie Face game, their runaway hit from 2016, which was awarded “Game of the Year” by the Toy Industry Association. In the Sky High version, one player hits a lever with a mallet, hoping to deliver their opponent a face full of pie cream. These are just a handful of the industry favorites that could be the hot picks among children for holiday gifting this year. Also, keep an eye out for FisherPrice Movi, anything Star Wars, FurReal friends, Shopkins and much more.

Help people on your list get some R&R Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

Stress can be bad for the body, contributing to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and even obesity. Unfortunately, more than half of working adults and 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association. Canadians, too, are feeling stressed. The North American research company Ipsos found that stress affects 76 percent of the Canadian population. Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation. • Aromatherapy: Studies have shown that aromatherapy, or breathing in certain scents, can trigger reactions in the brain and affect emotions, mood and memory. Specific essential oils can help relieve stress, induce relaxation and even promote better sleep. Scents such as lavender, lemon or yuzu, bergamot, ylangylang and jasmine can promote relaxation in many people.

Facials, aromatherapy, candles and comfortable bed linens are gifts that can pamper and relax. • Candles: The combination of subtle, low flickering light and relaxing aromas can make candles soothing gifts. Put together an entire gift package with decorative candle holders or a nice tray on which

candles of various heights can be placed. • Plush robe: Sometimes lounging around the house is all that’s necessary to create a soothing atmosphere. A plush robe that is luxurious and comfortable will help that someone special unwind after a long day or after sleeping in on the weekend. • Home aquarium: Stress can melt away watching underwater life flick and flitter through the aquarium. Combined with soothing bubbles and the gentle hum and splash of the filter, it is easy to see how having a fish tank in the home can alleviate stress. Make sure the gift recipient is able to care for the fish and select lowmaintenance species. • Bed linens: Treat someone special to the gift of added relaxation in the bedroom. Buying bed linens is often a chore and an expense that people put off. Pima cotton, silk, satin, or sateen sheets can be cool, comfortable and soothing. • Facial treatment: A massage session can be relaxing, but so can a facial. There’s something serene about having a professional apply products and rub areas of the face and temples. Stress will slip away in an instant. Pampering gifts can help ease anxiety, tame stress and help anyone feel more relaxed and happy.

Many possibilities for baby’s first Christmas Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics

The holiday season is a magical time of the year for all age groups, but seems to be especially enjoyed by children. Even though infants and toddlers may not fully appreciate gifts under the tree or holiday lighting displays, that’s no reason not to make tots’ first foray into holiday giving any less special. Shopping for babies can be challenging because gift-givers may not want to overwhelm new parents with much more stuff — considering their homes may already be inundated with baby gear. However, it’s difficult to resist the temptation to purchase adorable infant and toddler toys and trinkets, particularly when celebrating a child’s first holiday season. The following are some practical and thoughtful gift suggestions for shoppers who want to make children’s first holiday seasons as special as possible.

Think ahead and buy clothing that will be needed in the near future, and consider the seasons in which they’ll be used. Tack three months onto the baby’s age and that is likely the size he or she will need next.

Classic gifts Rockers have long been popular gifts for young children. While a little one may not be able to ride a rocker just yet, this can be a great addition to a nursery until it proves functional. Although a rocking horse is the standard, unicorns are currently having their moment, so a unicorn rocker can be a playful touch.

Personalized keepsakes Placing the date and baby’s name on gifts instantly transforms them into collector’s items that can be cherished through the years. In addition to ornaments, think about engraving photo frames or make a photo book with all of the baby memories thus far.
