“O Tannenbaum.” • “The Vietnam War” companion soundtrack, (CD or MP3, $14 to $18). The sweep of the Ken Burns-Lynn Novick series is matched by the music — evocative for those who lived through it, a revelation for those unaware of how deeply artists engaged with the era’s tumult. The 38 tracks on two CDs include Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s AGonna Fall”; “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” Pete Seeger, and “Backlash Blues,” Nina Simone.

LOS ANGELES — Give the binge-watching a rest, please, and play thoughtful Santa for the fellow TV addicts in your life. Peak TV makes peak gift-giving easy. Whether inspired by newcomers including “Stranger Things” and “This Is Us” or golden oldie “The Twilight Zone,” possibilities abound. There are outstanding series soundtracks to be had, and enough TV-centric trinkets to allow busy elves to take time off from the factory. Books destined for the small screen make thoughtful presents, which could also be said of a streaming stick with kid-friendly fare. Here’s a selection to consider, with prices as found online and a friendly nudge: search out discounts.

The tunes • “Big Little Lies” soundtrack (CD or MP3, about $8 to $9). A playlist that draws you back into the series’ dark world, with song titles that tell the devilmade-them-do-it tale: Michael Kiwanuka’s “Cold Little Heart,” Charles Bradley’s “Victim of Love” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by Ituana.

The books

In the book, “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Twilight Zone,” veteran TV critic Mark Dawidziak pays tribute to Rod Serling’s 1960s series by mining self-help lessons from memorable episodes. • “This Is Us” season one soundtrack, (CD or MP3, about $6 to $11). • “The Complete America’s Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook 2001-2018 ($20 and up, America’s Test Kitchen). Searching online for reliable recipes is tricky, while this compendium is anything but with more than 1,000 chef-proven ones for the Test Kitchen’s “best” version of a given dish. Techniques and tips about ingredients and equipment are included, along with a behindthe-scenes peak at how the kitchen lab functions. • “Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Twilight Zone” by Mark Dawidziak ($26.99, Thomas Dunne Books). from such memorable episodes as “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street,” in which neighbors suspect each other of being invading aliens, and “To Serve Man,” a reminder that judging a book by its cover is risky. • For those who like to read a story before seeing it adapted, consider these works (available digitally or in paperback for $10 or less each): “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson, already the basis of two movies and now due on Netflix; Nnedi Okorafor’s “Who Fears Death,” a post-apocalyptic novel set in Africa and optioned for a HBO series; Sarai Walker’s “Dietland,” a blast against society’s weight and beauty expectations coming to AMC.

The merch and more • “Stranger Things” is hot and has the show-inspired tchotchkes to prove it. Collectible figures include Eleven in a hospital gown or clutching the Eggo waffles she so loves, and Mike as a ghostbuster (Pop! Television by Funko, around $10). There’s also the Eggo Card Game ($15 and up) in which players attempt to escape from the Upside Down. Or maybe something more useful, say “Stranger Things” mugs in more than

Map route to personalized gift idea By KIM COOK

Associated Press Writer

If you’ve got avid travelers on your gift list this year, or just armchair ones, consider getting them a custom map. Maps of favorite places might commemorate special trips or experiences, and can appeal to any age or gender. Map Your Travels, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, has some options. One of its maps shows all the national parks, with pins to chart your visits. “We had one family who had kept track of all the parks they’d visited together over the years, and then gave a map to each of their five kids, so the next generation could map their national park visits,” said Nancy Spangrud of Map Your Travels. For the sports-loving family, the studio has a map of the country’s ballparks, past and present. Use the colored pins to mark parks, stadiums and favorite places. Local artist Julie May does the artwork, and a Wisconsin cartographer designs the world maps. Each map is printed on archival paper and mounted on foam core; a wood frame completes each one. (www.mapyourtravels. com) Australian industrial designer Tom Percy crafts 3-D maps out of plywood layers, using modern cartography and surveying techniques, and computer-assisted design technology.

One of the 3-D maps that Australian industrial designer Tom Percy crafted out of plywood layers by utilizing modern cartography and surveying techniques and CAD technology is shown on a wall. His studio, Pangea Maps, will create a custom map of a favorite lakeside cabin, surf spot or shoreline, with the option for a special message or location marker. His studio, Pangea Maps, makes topographic maps of coastlines and lakes throughout North America and Australia, as well as custom maps of any seascape or lakeside lo-

cale. (www.pangeamaps.com) Pangea’s maps have a monochromatic look, as much artwork as topography. Percy decided to start the mapmaking business after he

gave his first one to his dad on Father’s Day. “He began tracing the coastline with his finger to find our home, and then the beaches and waterways we frequented as I was growing up. He was so intrigued by the process, and loved seeing the intricacies of the ocean floor and river system,” Percy says. “My dad’s normally pretty quiet, so to see him light up with memories and hear stories of the places he loves was the best reaction I could have asked for.” He says one client had recently moved her mother into a residential care home, and had Percy create a Pangea map of the family’s lakeside cabin. The family wrote him to say the map created a calm and peaceful setting for their mom to look at, and was a creative way to help her and visitors recall happy memories of their time at the lake. If you’d like your 3-D lake map to provide additional geographic information, consider the detailed, colored, birchwood maps from www.lakehouselifestyle.com . The Lake Michigan model, for example, situates the waterway on a state map, providing a sense of its enormous size. Points of interest include deepest point and shoreline length. Maps also may be ordered as printed throw pillows, trays and clocks. At www.Minted.com, you provide an address and they’ll

Individuals can establish a period of time during which the assets are held in a trust and when those assets can be accessed. A tax-efficient way to give is to contribute to long-term securities in a person’s name. Recipients of such gifts can choose to cash in their stocks at a later date. Red vs. blue trumps red and green By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press Writer

Give gifts to enjoy all year long Courtesy of Brandpoint

With the holiday season in full swing, many people are heading to a local department store, or their favorite website, to tick off their holiday shopping lists. While some gifts are fun for the instant gratification they provide, it is nice to give goods that can be enjoyed for months, and years, to come. If you’re looking to impress this year, here are eight gift ideas your loved ones will be able to enjoy all year long. • Whole-home connectivity: Do you have a friend who is always complaining about their home internet? Tired of playing tech support for your family? Check out the eero Home WiFi System. Eero replaces your router with a series of sleek-looking devices that ensure every room has fast and reliable Wi-Fi. The eero system is easy to set up and will keep your household connected all year long. Plus, it’s a great gift to ensure all those shiny new gadgets — from gaming consoles to smartphones to Apple TVs — function properly throughout the home. You may want to pick up a system for yourself, while you’re at it. • A reason to say cheers: For anyone who enjoys unique kitchen items or barware, North Drinkware’s glasses make a great gift. Their nature-themed tumblers and pint glasses are hand blown in the U.S., and the base of each glass has the imprint of an iconic U.S. mountain. The glasses are made with care, each requiring 30 steps and two days to produce. It’s almost like drinking out of a piece of art. • Printable memories: The popular ‘70s point-shoot-andprint camera trend is back. But instead of lugging around a brick of a camera, companies like Fujifilm have reimagined the original Polaroid. Check out the Instax Mini 70. It’s lightweight and comes in a variety of colors to match any personality. It’s a fun gift for people of all ages who want to capture real-time moments, all year long. • Charging on-the-go: For

The Anker 20000 is a great portable charger. It’s slightly larger than a smartphone yet can recharge an iPhone 7 nearly seven times. It has two USB plugs so you’re able to charge multiple devices at once, and can be easily slipped into a pocket or bag for charging on-the-go. It’s truly the gift that keeps on giving. • An upgraded little black book: Whether used for a shopping list, sketchbook, journal or diary, it’s nice to have a beautiful notebook to carry around with you. Rifle Paper Company produces ornately designed paper goods, among them, compact notebooks. The Birch Notebook Set comes with two, 64-page richly colored books. Each 6-by-8

notebook features metallic gold foil accents and a lay-flat binding for easy writing or sketching. • No-stress weeknight meals: Practicality meets fun with Blue Apron. Blue Apron is a meal kit delivery service that’ll save you time and answer the dreaded weeknight question, “What’s for dinner?” A $60 gift card covers a one-week meal plan for two people. Fresh, pre-portioned ingredients will be delivered to the recipient’s door and meals are ready in less than an hour - perfect for a work or school night. Blue Apron also makes a great gift for people learning how to cook because each recipe comes with simple, stepby-step instructions. • A little slice of luxury: For a gift that’ll greet you with open arms, consider a Para-

chute bathrobe. Spun from 100 percent Turkish cotton, Parachute’s bathrobes give you the ultimate spa-like experience in your own home. The robes are plush and absorbent, and are the perfect little luxury after a long day. • Peace of mind: It’s hard to put a price tag on feeling safe and secure at home. Why not give that priceless feeling as a gift this holiday season? The Ring Spotlight Cam has got you covered. It’s a wirefree HD security camera that lets you see, hear and speak to anyone on your property from your smartphone or computer. It makes greeting guests, the delivery person or not-sosavory individuals quick and easy. Gift it with an eero WiFi System to ensure every corner of your home is connected and secure.
