Beautiful BEGINNINGS By BETH J. HARPAZ Associated Press Writer
If your idea of a wedding involves throwing rice and eating a slice of white, three-tiered cake, you’ve got some catching up to do. These days, guests blow bubbles or light sparklers instead of throwing rice. Trendy couples are getting married in barns and campgrounds, and they’re hiring food trucks for dinner and serving doughnuts for dessert. And how did anyone get married before the internet? From Pinterest inspiration to emailed invites and hashtagged photos, everything but the “I do” can be digital. We got input from more than 100 sources — including wedding planners, hotels and caterers, newlyweds and guests, websites, magazines and Mindy Weiss’ “The Wedding Book” — to compile the following look at what’s new in weddings.
What’s new with wedding trends
The ceremony Instead of a printed program, look for chalkboard signs telling you where to go, what to do and when. Online certification and relaxed legal requirements for officiants in many states means it’s much easier for couples to have friends or relatives perform their ceremony instead of a minister or justice of the peace. Why make a mess throwing rice? These days, newlyweds are feted by bubbles or sparklers distributed to guests beforehand. Dogs are on planes, in stores and everywhere else, so why shouldn’t they walk down the aisle with their owners? Couples are also inviting those nearest and dearest to join them at the altar regardless of gender. A bride can have a male friend by her side and a groom can have a female friend. Some even call them bridesmen and groomsmaids. For Jewish weddings, the signing of the traditional marriage contract, called a ketubah, is now often as elaborate as the wedding ceremony. What used to be a private signing with a couple of witnesses might now involve speakers, photos and a contract that’s a commissioned work of art rather than a simple document.
The setting Beaches and gardens have been popular alternatives to hotel ballrooms for a while. But venue options are getting even more rustic. Barns are a big trend, as are campgrounds where guests bunk for the weekend and line up for grub in the dining hall. These relaxed, semi-outdoor settings also lend themselves to weddings that feel more like summer camp or bar mitzvahs than formal occasions. Think scavenger

Build registry you can relish for years to come can give their guests more options to choose from. Try to include one brick-and-mortar store, ideally one with a national presence, so guests who prefer to shop in-person won’t be forced to buy online. • Don’t be afraid to list expensive items. While few guests will break the bank to buy wedding gifts, that does not mean couples should avoid including expensive items on their registries. Some couples might feel it’s inappropriate, but it can actually prove practical. Many stores offer couples steep discounts on items they listed on their registries that ultimately were not purchased. If you have your eye on an especially expensive item, include it on your list without worrying about how it may look to your guests, as they will understand when you explain the post-wedding discount you’re eligible for. • Don’t limit your registry to expensive items. While it’s perfectly acceptable to include expensive items on your registry, remember that variety is the spice of life when adding items to your registry. Include items at
a range of price points for guests working with various budgets. Don’t hesitate to include lowcost items, as some guests may enjoy building a wedding gift basket with various affordable items from your registry. • Remember that no gift is too obscure. Thanks to the Internet, just about any item can now be tracked down by ambitious gift givers. If you want to include items that might not be available at run-of-the-mill retailers, choose an online retailer such as Amazon to host one of your registries. Such sites are great places to find specialty items or more obscure offerings that might be out of stock at more traditional retailers. • Encourage donations. If you are truly hesitant to ask for gifts or you’re tying the knot later in life and already have everything you need, encourage guests to donate to a favorite charity in lieu of making a donation. A wedding registry provides a practical way for wellmeaning wedding guests to show their love for brides- and grooms-to-be.

Registries are a wedding tradition, not unlike a couple’s first dance or the best man/ maid of honor toast. But as practical as wedding registries are, many couples approach their registries with a degree of hesitation, fearful that they might appear presumptuous or simply uncertain about what to include on their lists. The following tips can help engaged couples build a registry to relish and utilize for years to come. • Establish an online registry. Whereas guests once had to visit a couple’s favorite retailer(s) and ask what remained on their registry, online registries now allow well-meaning family members and friends to peruse potential gifts from the comforts of home and ship gifts directly to the couple. Online registries even indicate which items have already been purchased, saving couples the trouble of returning duplicates while reassuring buyers that their gifts are fulfilling a need or want. • Share your registry information on your wedding web-

NEW YORK — Andie Potamkin Blackmore’s approach to life is creative and non-traditional, so why should her wedding “gown” have been any different? The 27-year-old gallery space co-owner, art dealer and fashion lover married hair stylist Jordan Blackmore last November in an outdoor ceremony at the Utah desert resort Amangiri. The Williamsburg, Brooklyn, couple loved the location, and the bride wanted her outfit to reflect the sandy, arid landscape as well as her personality. She wore a tiny bra top with a skirt she had a designer make using loose tubes of chiffon in gradient colors, from creamy white to peach and blush, with touches of gold and a train. Underneath, she wore cowboy boots. “It seamlessly transitioned into the desert. I wanted it to look like I was growing out of

the desert,” Potamkin Blackmore laughed. “I wanted to look like a really cool, weird, desert, alien princess.” Her desires played right into a trend that has been building for several years: the anythinggoes bride who chooses to bare a little midriff in two pieces or rock her wedding in a jumpsuit or menswear-inspired tuxedo look done in bridal white, ivory, Champagne or equally soft wedding tones. “It’s definitely something in the air,” said Jane Keltner de Valle, Glamour’s fashion news director. “In general, when you’re getting married, you’re typically in the best shape of your life. You’re working out like crazy. A lot of brides feel like they want to show off those hard-earned abs.”

Beautiful BEGINNINGS
Select a comfortable wedding gown Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics
Many brides-to-be visit bridal shops with specific goals in mind regarding the style of their wedding gowns. Some women come equipped with magazine tear-outs or pull up ideas on their mobile phones. Others may have an entire scrapbook filled with various ideas they’ve been compiling for years. Much consideration is given to wedding gowns. The cost and silhouette of the dress may garner the bulk of that consideration, but brides might want to spend more time considering comfort. Depending on the time of day their weddings take place, brides can spend 12 hours or more in their wedding gowns on their wedding day. However, when shopping for their gowns, brides may prioritize beauty
over comfort, even though it’s entirely possible to find a gown that’s both stunning and comfortable. When staff and friends or family who have come along to offer advice start to blush over wedding gowns, brides-tobe may feel pressured to downplay any discomfort they feel. To make sure brides look flawless and elegant but are still comfortable in their wedding gowns, consider the following tips. • Know what to highlight and what to cover up. No two body types are the same, and many women feel certain parts of their bodies are their best assets while they want to downplay others. Try on gowns that play up your best features. If you have shapely legs, consider a dramatic gown with a slit to show them off. Certain gowns can enhance the decollete or

She and her groom, Jeff Lanard, chose as their venue the building where they met, the campus center at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. “I wanted to feel like a bride, but not so bridal,” she said. “We wanted it to be fun and lighthearted. A gown felt too over the top.” With brides celebrating in more than one outfit — one for the ceremony, one for the reception, for example — those who might feel uneasy about trousers, jumpsuits or bare midriffs walking down the aisle have plenty of other opportunities to wear those looks. “The two-piece trend is definitely something that is catching on, and it doesn’t have to be scandalous,” said Shelley Brown, associate fashion and beauty editor at The Knot. “Brides more and more want to feel that their weddings are personalized and reflect their style.”
Jumping into jumpsuits More bridal designers are offering twopiece options, along with jumpsuits, she said. Keltner de Valle urged brides to be sure before committing to either style. “If you aren’t confident about your
show off an hourglass shape. Remember, many gowns can be modified so that you feel secure and confident. Sleeves can be added or fabric placed to cover up any perceived flaws. Confidence and pride are important parts of the comfort factor. • Get sized correctly. Bridal gown sizes do not coincide with street sizes. Depending on the manufacturer, brides may have to select gowns that are several sizes larger than they would normally wear. This should not be a cause for alarm. Brides should go by their measurements. Attempting to squeeze into a dress that is too small will only lead to discomfort on the wedding day. • Purchase the right undergarments. Improperly fitting bras, shapewear and other undergarments can lead to discomfort as well. Some seamstresses can sew in supportive cups to
stomach, you’re going to be shifting around or self-conscious about it all night. Another important thing to keep in mind is setting. If you’re getting married in a traditional church ceremony, perhaps wearing a crop top might not be the most appropriate thing,” she said. Showing just a sliver of skin instead of a lot is a safe choice, Keltner de Valle said. “Another thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to be photographed all night from every angle, so you want to make sure that it’s flattering in different situations — when you sit down, when you’re dancing, when you’re leaning over to cut the cake.” Getting more use for the dollar is another consideration. “A white ball gown is pretty much a one-use-only type of thing, whereas a white jumpsuit is something you could totally wear again and again,” Keltner de Valle said. She suggested staying close to traditional tones. “You don’t want to push the envelope on everything all at once,” she said. Potamkin Blackmore has no plans to stash her sexy wedding outfit in a box, choosing instead to have it incorporated into a piece of furniture — made by the designer who created her outfit, Maurizio Galante. “He’s a master screen printer and does great embroidery on chairs, and does tables made of rubber tubes,” she said. “I wanted it to live on.”
remove the need for separate bras. Brides can explore various options to reduce the visibility of certain accoutrements. • Move around in the gown. Brides should not just stand in front of the mirror and smile when trying on gowns. Put them through their paces. Try sitting, bending and even a little dancing. Make sure the dress is comfortable to move around in. • Try different options. The gown brides have in mind may not be the one they ultimately go home with. Explore different styles and materials. Choose cooler, breezier fabrics and lightweight gowns, like crêpe, georgette or organza, for summer weddings. Heavier fabrics, such as brocade, may be more comfortable in the winter. Wedding gowns can be both beautiful and comfortable for those who know how to shop.

Beautiful BEGINNINGS Wild, natural are blossoming trends for wedding flowers

Whether designing with flowers for a huge formal event or a small casual affair, the trend is toward a more wild and natural look, according to floral designer Ariella Chezar of the FlowerSchool in New York. That can include blooms, branches, fruit and foraged materials, like rosemary and jasmine, she said. And the best place to start is with your local flower farmer or farmer’s market. “It’s important to consider the setting before deciding on the arrangement. Mason jars are great, but they wouldn’t work at the Waldorf,” said Chezar, who has designed floral arrangements for hundreds of weddings as well as for the White House. She is co-author
with Julie Michaels of the new “The Flower Workshop” (Ten Speed Press, March 2016), which has tips on everything from textures and colors to foliage and containers. It includes step-by-step instructions for more than 45 floral projects. Another important factor in selecting flowers and arrangements is which colors suit the bride, Chezar said in an interview from her home in upstate New York. “It seems like 90 percent of the blonde brides choose pastels and 90 percent of brunettes opt for jewel tones, since people tend to be drawn to the colors they look best in,” Chezar said. But the most crucial element is finding out what flowers are in season in the vicinity of the wedding, said Chezar, who is also a flower grower. “About 80 percent of the
flowers used in the U.S. come from abroad, and there’s a real interest now in using locally grown flowers,” she said. “Just as there is a ‘slow food’ movement, there is also a ‘slow flowers’ movement,” she explained, and local or foraged varieties are “very much the look du jour pretty much anywhere you go.”
Directory of growers Slowflowers.com is a directory of over 700 flower growers in every state except North Dakota, she said. Debra Prinzing of Seattle, who launched the site two years ago, said: “Farmers who sell to the public are an incredibly useful resource for brides, a real repository of knowledge. And the ethos of local, or at least U.S. sourcing is something brides really want these days.”
Farmers know what’s in season, and having a story behind the flowers at your wedding — a sort of provenance — adds to the event, said Prinzing, who adds stationery tags to centerpieces for local weddings telling where the flowers were grown and what variety they are. “It’s a cultural pivot toward local sourcing for all things. And in terms of the aesthetic, it’s a mindset of looking for all things seasonal and natural,” she said. Chezar says that look can be attained through a generous use of foliage, branches and vines, as opposed to “just stuffing the flowers together tightly. People don’t necessarily think about the foliage, but it’s what breaks up and highlights the flowers and gives them a more natural look.”

Look for depth
Ask to see a complete portfolio from beginning to end for at least one or two weddings. You don’t want to see only a few “best” photos. “It’s easy to show a bunch of terrific single images taken at many weddings,” says Radhika Chalasani, “but a great wedding photographer has to capture an entire wedding beautifully from start to finish.” The New Yorkbased Chalasani has been photographing weddings since 2004. Looking at portfolios will ensure that the photographer wasn’t just an assistant or a guest with a camera. You can see how the photog-

Tell the photographer what the most important aspects of the day are to you, whether it’s exchanging rings or walking down the aisle. “Brides should be realistic about their day and make every possible effort to help their photographer capture great imagery,” Cusic says. A bride or groom getting ready inside a messy hotel room, for instance, will not make for strong pictures, she notes.

Continued from page 14 Containers are also important. “The idea is to let things extend beyond the edge of a vase, to give a sense of movement and direction. Cylindrical vases are the least friendly to this because they are too vertical. Urns or bowls or anything that allows flowers to extend outward is much more wonderful to work with,” Chezar says.
Don’t forget nurseries Besides flower growers and farmers markets, she said, “another great resource is nurseries. If you don’t want to deal with cut flowers, you can have a mass of pansies in a pot. Nice containers elevate even humble plants to something more elegant, and a plant is almost always cheaper than cut flowers, plus it lasts.” She warned, however, that those trying to make their own wedding centerpieces should think carefully before deciding to do so. “Nobody realizes how much work it takes to do your own flowers,” she said. “Don’t think you can do it the last week. You need to plan way ahead, do some research to get a sense of what’s going to be available when you’ll be needing it, put together an idea board of varieties and colors, and practice doing it ahead of the event itself.”
Focus
Continued from page 16 other, the person with whom you’ll spend the most time on your wedding day might well be your photographer. He or she will be with you as you get ready and as you go through the emotional highs of the day. The photographer might guide you and your family through a portrait session, walk backward as you process up the aisle, and hang close by during your first dance. So this person’s personality — sense of humor, demeanor, even appearance — should be a good fit with both of you. Craig Warga, a New York-based wedding photographer, says “good photography happens when you can get close to your subjects, and they feel completely comfortable being natural and themselves in front of your lens. If you don’t like someone, you’re not going to have that level of comfort in front of them, and it will affect the pictures.” If you like a sassy personality who will add some color to your day, then by all means hire a vibrant, outgoing photographer who exudes energy. hand, if you want a subtle documentary photographer who will capture important moments without being intrusive, go for someone who won’t talk loudly over you when you first meet, and who seems cool and composed. The right photographer, says Warga, is someone who leaves you thinking, “it’d be nice to have that person as a guest at my wedding.”
Sweat some details Ask if the photographer has a full set of equipment: multiple bodies and lenses with back-ups. Will he or she be working with an assistant or second photographer? If so, what is the additional cost and does that person need to be there all day? If your venue will be dark, can the photographer handle it? Is the photographer able to work in adverse conditions such as rain at an outdoor ceremony? Finally, make provisions for your photographer to eat; it’s hard to be “on” for eight to 10 hours straight. A 15-minute meal break might just be the best thing you do for the photographer.

More couples seek honeymoon cash By JosEPH PisAni AP Business Writer
NEW YORK — Before they say “I do,” soon-to-be newlyweds are increasingly going online to ask, “Will you pay for our honeymoon?” Crowdfunding websites such as Honeyfund, GoFundMe and Honeymoon Wishes make it easy to raise cash from family and friends for a post-wedding getaway. The sites charge fees for their services — as much as 10 percent of the total collected — but people are warming up to the idea, despite the cost. As couples increasingly live together first and marry later, they already have toasters and towels, so traditional gift registries don’t make as much sense. Honeymoon registries also provide a polite way of hinting to guests to give money instead, without breaking wedding etiquette. “I didn’t feel right saying, ‘Hey, give me cash,’” says Nicole DePinto, who raised $2,900 on GoFundMe for an Icelandic honeymoon with her husband Anthony in December. Sites that help couples raise cash for honeymoons have seen their popularity soar recently. Honeyfund users, for example, raised $90 million last year, a 50 percent jump from the year before, says co-founder and CEO Sara Margulis. In 2015, 22 percent of people

That’s the same as the year before, but up from 17 percent in 2013 and 13 percent in 2012. The DePintos even crowdsourced the destination of their honeymoon, asking the 100 guests at their travel-themed October wedding reception to vote on Greece, Iceland or Japan. The save-the-dates came on postcards and the party favors were luggage tags. “We did everything outside of the box,” she said. They loved the natural beauty of
NEW YORK (AP) — Thinking of setting up a registry to raise cash for a honeymoon? You have options. GoFundMe, Honeyfund and Honeymoon Wishes are among the sites that help couples ask wedding guests for honeymoon funds. The sites charge fees, so make sure to read what each one charges before committing. The companies say the fees cover payment processing and website maintenance.

Get most from honeymoon cash registry NEW YORK (AP) — Asking for cash from wedding guests is an etiquette no-no. But sites such as Honeyfund and Honeymoon Wishes can make it easier to ask for cash to pay for a honeymoon. Here are some tips to get the most from a honeymoon registry: • Explain what you’ll use the money for, such as plane tickets or tours or museums. • Add pictures of you and your future spouse and why you chose the honeymoon destination. • Share a link to the registry on your Facebook page and other social media sites. • Add a link to the honeymoon registry from your main wedding website. • Let bridesmaids, groomsmen and other people in the wedding party know that you set up a registry so that they can spread the word among guests. • Update the site periodically, thanking guests for their gifts or counting down the days until the big day.

cash Continued from page 24 throw pillows and bedding,” they explained on their GoFundMe page. Asking for cash in the invitation is a wedding faux pas, says Kristen Maxwell Cooper, deputy editor at The Knot. But passing around a link to a honeymoon registry works, because couples can explain to guests exactly where the money will be spent, she says. Couples have a few options to turn to. Crowdfunding site GoFundMe has collected $2 billion to date for all sorts of personal campaigns, raising money for medical emergencies, crime victims and other local causes. But the site does have a weddings and honeymoons section where users have raised $4 million since GoFundMe was launched six years ago, says media director Kelsea Little. Anyone can see a GoFundMe campaign, but don’t expect strangers to hand over cash — only friends and family will likely donate, says Little. “It’s a common misconception,” she says. Honeyfund, meanwhile, is more focused on honeymoons. Couples can list exactly what the cash will pay for, from hotel rooms to sightseeing tours to massages. Major resorts and cruise lines are jumping in, using Honeymoon Wishes to power honeymoon registries built into their sites. At Carnival Cruise Line, for example, couples can ask wedding guests to pay for scuba diving excursions or horseback rides. The money goes straight to Carnival and couples can redeem the gifts on board, says Nancy Williams, the business development director at Honeymoon Wishes. Couples can also go to Honeymoon Wishes and build their own honeymoon, without being attached to a certain resort. “It’s now socially acceptable,” says Williams.

Getting everyone where they need to be Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics
Weddings are momentous events for the couple tying the knot as well as all of the friends and family invited to share in the big day. Before couples can tie the knot and cut a rug at their receptions, everyone, couple and guests included, must arrive at the location (or locations if the ceremony site differs from the reception area). Though arranging wedding day transportation can be difficult, there are ways to make the process go more smoothly for guests and bridal party members.
Determine your needs Before a transportation plan can be made, couples must first map out their needs. Everything should be built around the ceremony. Once the ceremony time has been set, the rest of the day can be arranged around that time. Determine how much time is needed to travel from the ceremony to the reception area. Allocate enough time before the cocktail hour to allow for traffic, photos and any other needs that may take up time. Couples do not want any-
one, included themselves, to feel rushed. Once the timing has been orchestrated, couples can figure out exactly which types of transportation will be required.
Book for yourself first Happy couples must make their own transportation their top priority. Arrange for the couples’ transportation between five and seven months in advance of the wedding. It could be preferable to book it even further in advance if a couple is getting married around a holiday or during prom season when limousines and party buses are in high demand. Remember, unless the bride-to-be plans to be seen by her groom, couples will need separate transportation to the ceremony site. Factor multiple vehicles into the wedding transportation budget.
explore personality Brides and grooms have many transportation options at their disposal. If a limousine doesn’t add the spark of creativity they desire, they can opt for a VW bus or a retro roadster. Outdoor enthusiasts might want to ride off on horse-
back, while easy riders might prefer to rev up the engine on a Harley-Davidson. Couples should never feel penned in by tradition, especially when something else makes them feel remarkable and the budget allows for it.
Getaway car ready Couples generally opt to arrive to the wedding and reception in style, but take their own vehicles or cabs home afterward. This requires some advanced planning. Enlist the help of friends to park the return-trip car in a convenient location. Check with the catering hall to see if a vehicle can be left in their lot overnight. Otherwise, arrange to grab a ride home with friends or family.
consider others’ needs Have the names and phone numbers of taxi or ride-sharing services available for those who may not be able to drive after the party. Elderly or disabled guests might appreciate prearranged transportation as well. Although couples can arrange for transportation as a courtesy to others, they don’t need to make arrangements for everyone.

Ways to honor lost loved ones By lisA A. FlAM
Associated Press Writer
In the days leading up to her wedding, Lauren Chertok was heartbroken. Her beloved Aunt Rosie, who taught her to make meatballs and often came over for Sunday dinners, died just two weeks before her big day, leaving her large family enveloped in sadness. “It was hard to celebrate and be so happy when everybody was mourning my aunt and grieving her,” Chertok, 24, said of her mother’s eldest sister, Rosie Van Acker, the aunt and godmother who was like Chertok’s second mom. Chertok felt that her aunt, who died on June 20 at age 76, would have wanted her to carry on. She did, marrying Josh Gutes as planned on July 5, a very happy day despite the raw pain. Still, the bride, a kindergarten teacher who lives in Nesconset, New York, felt she had to do something to represent and honor Rosie at the happy celebration of her Kate Harrison Photography/Kathryn Kalabokes via AP marriage so “we didn’t forget what our FAMily WEdding PHoTos are displayed as a tribute to the bridal couple’s lost loved family just went through.” Chertok pinned a small photo of Aunt ones at a wedding reception at Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco. Rosie to her bouquet, displayed a photo of the two of them from Chertok’s Sweet 16 party at the reception, and lit a candle in her honor. The 250 guests who gathered at the Larkfield in East Northport, New York, raised a glass to Aunt Rosie, and a favorite Italian song played as well. In ways big and small, many brides and grooms honor lost loved ones on their wedding day. The tributes, silent or overt or somewhere in between, are a good idea for those who are missing somebody important that day, said San Francisco wedding planner Kathryn Kalabokes. “A wedding is the one time that everyone would be there, and when you’ve lost some- lauren chertok one, especially during the planning process, it can be very devastating,” she said. “The holds her bouquet best thing to do is to honor them because you with a photo know that person would have been there of her late aunt and been a significant part of the wedding.” Rosie Van Acker A tribute, though, should feel right for pinned to it on her a celebratory day, nothing too somber or wedding day. serious. “It is important to honor that person Barattini Productions/Lauren Chertok via AP who is close to you, but maintain the posiThere are many ways to remember a tivity and look ahead to the life change sonalized remembrance and what feels loved one, from traditional to creative and and union of two people,” said Jamie right to you,” Miles said. Seven ideas for recycling wedding gown Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics
When planning their weddings, many brides-to-be devote a large portion of their wedding budgets to their wardrobes. Statistics released by The Knot in 2014 indicated the amount the average woman was willing to spend her gown was $1,281. Wedding gowns are among the most costly wedding expenditures. Because wedding gowns can be so expensive, many brides elect to have their gowns cleaned and preserved. Reusing a wedding gown is a cost-effective and earth-friendly idea. Women have many options when it comes time to putting their wedding gowns to use after they have tied the knot. The following are just some of the great ideas couples can explore. 1. Save it for younger generations. One of the primary reasons to preserve a wedding gown is to save the dress for a daughter, granddaughter or another relative to wear at her own wedding. 2. Transform it into other attire. There are a number of different occasions when wearing white is acceptable. Religious ceremonies such as baptisms and communions qualify, and a wedding gown in the hands of an experienced seamstress or tailor can be transformed into a baby’s Christening ensemble or a beautiful dress for a youngster about to receive First Holy
not have the funds to purchase their own beautiful gowns. Work with an organization that will provide dresses to the less fortunate. Or donate it to an organization that can sell the gown to fund projects for others in need. Another option is the Mary Madeline Project, which uses wedding dress fabrics to create burial outfits for stillborn infants. 4. Cut it up into usable fabric. Wedding gown fabrics can be used in various applications. Dresses can be transformed into decorative pillows or other wedding mementos. Stretch the fabric across a frame and use it as a blank canvas for a photo keepsake. The fabric also can work for baby cribs and infant basket skirting. 5. Use it as a Halloween costume. Dress as a bride for Halloween. Otherwise, tailor the dress to fit a child and she can use it for any number of dress-up opportunities. 6. Donate it to a costume archive. Theatrical companies may be able to use the fabric to create costumes for their productions. 7. Create a keepsake. Cut a small piece of the fabric and put it into a pendant or locket. A piece of tulle or lace also can be Metro Creative Graphics placed inside a clear Christmas ornament WEdding goWns can be donated or and hung on the tree for years to come. Honor Continued from page 30 leave an empty chair, often in the front row with a flower on top, as a tribute. A popular reception tribute is the display of photos of departed relatives. A loved one’s special cooking creation, say chocolate chip cookies, can be served with dessert or handed out as a favor. Or, couples can make a charitable donation in the person’s honor instead of a favor. For a more subtle tribute, a bride may stitch a memento under her gown, such as a piece of her mother’s wedding gown, or wear a loved one’s garter. Wearing keepsake jewelry or cuff links from departed relatives keeps them close. Or include a beloved flower, even a favorite color, in the bridal bouquet.

Unique ways for guests to sign in By lisA A. FlAM
Associated Press Writer
Alexis and John Roulette don’t have to look far to remember the love that friends and relatives showered upon them on their wedding day. The 7-foot-long surfboard mounted above their living room couch says it all. In silver Sharpie, guests wrote messages of love, congratulations and advice on the board that the couple used as a guest book at their wedding in Huntington Beach, California, last summer. “It’s a constant reminder of our special day and the love we had around us,” says Alexis
Roulette, 30. As weddings have become highly personalized, the guest book, too, has come a long way. What was once a traditional white bound book has become elaborate and creative, often taking the shape of something that reflects the couple’s personalities or wedding theme. “What it’s morphed into is more of a way of delivering messages and notes and keepsakes for the bride and groom, while at the same time it’s become more interactive and creative in its display,” says Darcy Miller, editor at large of Martha Stewart Weddings. Guests might sign a giant wine bottle, a piece of sport-

Or a couple might offer a published book for guests to sign, Miller says, such as a book on birds for a nature-inspired event. Because guest books are so individualized, they often become part of the couple’s home. “It becomes personalized decor you live with,” Miller says. “These are no longer things getting stuck in a box and never looked at ever again.” The Roulettes’ surfboard guest book fit the laid-back feeling of their beach-themed wedding at Don The Beachcomber. “It’s a really nice piece that I appreciate that we have and can admire,” Roulette says. “I like that we can see it every day Justin Griffin/Personal Wine via AP rather than a book. Guests can attend weddings without breaking the bank Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics
Couples and/or their families can expect to spend tens of thousands of dollars on their weddings before saying “I do,” making weddings one of the largest expenses for a couple apart from buying a house or new car. But brides- and groomsto-be are not the only ones who may have to invest quite a great deal on wedding days. Guests, including bridal party members, may also be responsible to pay a substantial sum. According to the 2016 American Express Spending & Saving Tracker, Americans expected to spend an average of $703 per each wedding they attended in 2016. Few people are willing to miss the wedding of a beloved family member or friend, even when the costs of attending the wedding can be high. Fortunately, there are ways for wedding invitees to attend the festivities without breaking the bank. • Shop around for lodging. Many couples arrange for discounted hotel rooms for their out-of-town wedding guests. But guests might be able to save even more by shopping around for their own discounted rates at hotels and other lodging accommodations. Websites like Orbitz and Hotels.com can compare rates at all the hotels in a given city, letting wedding guests explore all of their alternatives in a single search. Guests who are especially patient can use the Hotel Tonight app, which allows users to book heavily discounted rooms no more than seven days in advance of their expected occupancy. Guest also can try finding affordable lodging on the popular homestay network Airbnb. • Book travel early. Many
travelers insist the best flight deals can be found as late as six weeks before the desired departure date. But there’s no guarantee that waiting that long to book flights will benefit wedding guests. If the patient approach does not pan out, guests might be forced to choose between costly flights or not attending the wedding. Budget-conscious travelers may find it less stressful to book flights as early as possible. Doing so allows guests to find flights at the times they most prefer to fly, and it also makes it possible to spread the cost of attending a wedding out over a longer period of time. • Say no to joining the bridal party. While it’s an honor when brides or grooms ask certain friends or family members to be in their bridal parties, guests should not feel compelled to accept that invitation if they cannot afford it. If money is tight, explain the situation to the bride and groom, who might even offer to help cover some of the costs of the wedding. Even if couples cannot afford that gesture, they will understand if friends or family members cannot cover the additional costs associated with being in a bridal party. • Split expenses. Another way for guests to save money is to split certain expenses with fellow guests. Single guests can share hotel rooms with fellow guests attending solo, and even couples can join up with other couples and split the cost of double rooms. Sharing expenses such as rental cars and trips to and from the airport is another way for guests to coordinate their efforts to save money. The costs of attending a wedding are growing. But savvy guests can save money in various ways.

Consider Friday wedding Some wedding venues may only host weddings on Saturdays, limiting the options available to couples looking to tie the knot on a Friday.
Metro Creative Graphics Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics
ting married on a Friday is the cost. Wedding venues tend to be most expensive on Saturday because that’s when the majority of couples prefer to get married. While each venue is different, couples willing to get married on a Friday might find it far less expensive than getting married on a Saturday. Another advantage to getting married on a Friday is the opportunity to spend more time with guests. Couples who get married on a Saturday tend to be busy most of Friday and Saturday, and that leaves little time to spend with their guests, many of whom will return home first thing on Sunday morning. But by getting married on a Friday, couples then have Saturday to spend with their guests, and they can even plan a laid back gettogether like a backyard barbecue or Saturday brunch with guests who will likely stay in town through the weekend.
Couples give a great deal of thought to the day they choose to get married. Many engaged couples are more attached to a particular season than a specific day, but some couples will consider any time of year to say “I do.” Weather factors heavily into many couples’ decisions regarding when to get married. According to The Knot 2015 Real Weddings Study, 39 percent of the nearly 18,000 U.S. brides and grooms surveyed chose to get married in the months of September, October or November, three months of the year when the weather tends to be both predictable and pleasant. But more and more couples are paying more mind to which day of the week to get married as well. While Saturday is widely considered the most traditional day to tie the knot, couples may want to consider walking down the aisle on Friday. Friday cons weddings can be just as enjoyable as SaturLikely because they are so extraordiday weddings, but there are some pros and nary, Friday weddings may be less popucons to choosing Friday over Saturday. lar with guests. dinner on Thursday night, and that might not sit well with friends and family who do not have much vacation or personal time. Even guests who are not in the bridal party may need to take a day off from work that they otherwise can avoid taking if the wedding was scheduled for Saturday or even Sunday. Couples also should know that Friday weddings tend to begin later at night, as it’s customary to start the ceremony in the evening so guests who have to work can still arrive on time. Couples inviting several elderly guests or children may find that these people miss the ceremony and/or reception because of the later start time. Brides- and grooms-to-be may find their options with regard to venues and entertainment are more limited when they choose to get married on a Friday instead of a Saturday. Some venues may only host weddings on Saturdays, while entertainers like deejays or bands who work day jobs during the week may not be available on Friday nights. Couples considering tying the knot on a Friday should consider a host of factors before making their final decision.

Rock-solid alternatives to diamonds Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics
White diamonds have been the traditional engagement ring stones for decades. While shoppers have experimented with gold, silver, platinum, and other precious metals for ring bands, the star of the show has long been that twinkling, pristine diamond. Even though diamonds may be a “girl’s best friend,” they may not fit every woman’s style, particularly the bride who likes to buck tradition and think outside the box. According to Money magazine, the average engagement ring costs more than $5,800. In addition to being one of the most expensive gemstones, diamonds have become quite commonplace. Some women even eschew diamonds for moral reasons. Whatever the driving force behind shopping for alternative gems, women who want to set themselves apart from others — and men who want to “wow” their significant others with unique and eye-catching rings — may opt for other dazzling stones. • Moissanite: This crystal naturally occurs in meteorites and is nearly as hard, dense and scuff-resistant as a diamond.
Metro Creative Graphics
gEMsTonEs besides diamonds are becoming more popular in engagement rings. Some feel moissanite offers more brilliance and fire than diamonds. Moissanite is a white-colored stone, so it can mimic the look of a diamond. And since it can be made in the laboratory at a fraction of the cost of even lab-made diamonds, it’s a frugal option. A nearly flawless one-carat moissanite gem can cost less than $1,000. • Lemon quartz: This is the trade name for a lemon-yellow stone that is a variety of color-enhanced transparent quartz. Quartz is turned into this sunny
hue through an artificial gamma ray irradiation process. Like other quartz gemstones, lemon quartz is considered to be very durable and is therefore suitable for all types of jewelry. • Sapphire: Sapphires tend to be blue stones (of varying intensity), but they also come in peach, pink, yellow, green, and white. Sapphire may not sparkle as much as a diamond or even moissanite. However, with the right cut, it can be hard to distinguish any lack of luster. Sapphires are the third hardest mineral, and at about one-third the price of diamonds, they make an ideal diamond substitute. • Morganite: According to the blog Bridal Musings, morganite is currently one of the most popular choices for engagement rings. Its pretty pink hue is romantic and feminine. It also sits at around the same hardness as sapphires, ensuring the rings will endure. Vividly cut rubies, emeralds and tanzanite — all gems that are rarer yet less expensive than diamonds — can make beautiful engagement rings. Some couples also may opt for rings without gemstones, such as traditional Claddagh or “true lover’s knot” rings to signify their union.
Develop different roles for father of the bride Courtesy of Metro Creative Graphics
Popular movies and televisions shows give the impression that the job of the father of the bride in a wedding is ultimately about making sure the festivities are adequately funded. In the movies, fathers fret about the costs of everything from flowers to photos. But gone are the days when the father of the bride bankrolls his daughter’s entire wedding. The Knot’s “2014 Real Wedding Survey” reported that, on average, the bride’s parents contribute 43 percent of the total cost of a wedding; the bride and groom contribute another 43 percent; the groom’s parents spend 12 percent; the remaining 2 percent of the budget is paid for by family members or friends. That frees up Dad for other roles in wedding planning. With some creativity, couples can find ways to incorporate the father of the bride into the festivities in even more productive ways. • Wedding sites: Assign dear old dad the important task of looking at potential wedding reception sites prior to visiting them yourself. He may have certain connections through work or attended busi-

Dad’s connections can pay off. Let him impart his negotiating skills and find the best deals with the ideal backdrop for the festivities. • Wardrobe: Let your father assist the best man and other groomsmen in securing their tuxedos or other wardrobe es-
sentials. Dad also can step in and return rented items following the wedding. • Beverages: Dad may be fitting to keep tabs on what is occurring at the bar during the reception, ensuring that guests’ needs are being met. He also can keep an eagle eye trained on anyone who may have overindulged and needs to take a break. • Speech: Give your father an opportunity to shine by letting him make a speech. Remember, this is a momentous day for Dad as well, as he may be trying to come to terms with his daughter starting a new life. • Father-daughter song: Let Dad pick father-daughter song, and go with his choice even if you had something else in mind. • Ceremony: Even if you prefer a less traditional wedding ceremony, let your father walk you down the aisle. This will likely be a moment he’ll remember for years to come. Expand the father of the bride’s role in the wedding by assigning him tasks where he can put his style, experience and excitement to good use.
