What to get for those on the go By BETH J. HARPAZ AP Travel Editor

NEW YORK — What’s in your bag when you take a trip? What gadgets, tools and comfort items are essential? The Associated Press crowdsourced that question on a Facebook thread as fodder for a holiday gift guide for travelers. We heard from folks around the world, from Millennials to retirees, from frequent-flying business travelers to once-ina-while vacationers. Here are their recommendations, plus a few of our favorites.

Gadgets • A universal travel adapter that converts electric current around the world. The travel store Flight 001 has a “5-in-1” color-coded adapter , $35. • Portable chargers to keep devices running on the road. Anker’s PowerCore 26800, $48, can charge an iPhone more than six times. For hikers and beach bums, Anker’s PowerPort Solar Lite , $51, was deemed the best solar charger by The New York Times’ Wirecutter product-testing company. • The Tile, $35, to keep track of belongings. Attach the Tile to an object like keys or bags, or tuck it inside a passport case or wallet, and you can locate the item with Bluetooth technology. For outdoor gear, try Tile Sport. • Tiny Bluetooth speakers, like the $28 Oontz, to fill a hotel room or vacation rental with music. • Power strip or cube tap (a cube-shaped adapter with multiple outlets) to charge multiple devices in hotel rooms and airports. • Headlamp for hiking, reading and crafting. Or the mini Lumio lamp and battery pack, which opens and closes like a book, $150.

Best presents are ones you can eat By The Culinary Institute of America For the Associated Press

Gift-giving is supposed to be fun, but if you’re an adult, by now you’ve learned that choosing gifts is one of the more stress-inducing aspects of the holiday. Luckily, here at The Culinary Institute of America, we’ve learned a no-fail strategy for gifts that keeps us on the “nice” list. Food is almost always the answer, and your holiday gift list is no exception. Edible gifts are always a huge hit, especially at busy times of the year. We can enjoy them in our pajamas at the end of a long day and they are usually something that you don’t get to eat every day. The best presents are ones that we wouldn’t get for ourselves (we’re all set on socks this year, Mom), and for food, that usually translates to something a little bit decadent, unusual, or hard-to-find. And decadent, unusual, and hard-to-find just happen to be three of the defining characteristics of a good cheese. Sure, most of us eat cheese every day. But most of us don’t eat amazing cheese every day. It’s expensive, it’s not a health food, and it’s not readily available at everyone’s local grocery store. Luckily, in today’s global marketplace, mind-blowing cheese is one click away, with high-end sellers offering delivery of the aged stuff, the grated stuff, and even the smelly stuff, right to your doorstep. Cheese preference is personal, but unless you know your loved-one’s favorites, you can never go wrong with a nice assortment. Cheeses, like wines, are hard to narrow down into a few categories, but in very general terms, you can classify them as hard, soft, and semi-soft/semi-firm. For a nice gift, if you choose one from each of those categories, you have a well-rounded selection.

Advice from cheese guru CIA instructor and cheese guru John Fischer says, “I like to have both a theme and variety at the same time. For instance, the basket could be all French items, but there should be a range of cheese from soft to aged, mild to stinky.” Themes that relate to a friend’s interest are also a fun way to ex-

If they spend a week skiing in Vermont every year, give them a sampling from the state’s abundant creameries. If you just don’t know where to start, we’ve put together a collection of our favorites. Use it as a cheat sheet for a gift basket that anyone will love. For cheeses, we started with Garrotxa, a Catalan goat’s milk cheese that is semifirm (so, not dry like an aged Manchego, but not soft and runny). It has a touch of sweetness to contrast its peppery flavor that makes it an ideal dessert cheese, though it’s no slouch at a cocktail party. Next, we chose a Camembert. This one is more familiar to even indifferent cheese-eaters. It is soft and creamy, with an edible, bloomy rind (yes, it’s mold. No, it is not gross). Though Camembert comes from the same-named region in France, true Camemberts are becoming harder to find, due to increased regulations on raw milk

cheeses. Luckily, several American dairies are producing Camembert-style cheeses that hold up to the classic iteration. Finally, the little Bijou from Vermont Creamery is made in the style of a traditional French Crottin de Chavignol. This soft-ripened goat cheese is velvety in its creaminess, slightly tart, and relatively mild. You might think goat cheese isn’t your thing, but this is not like the dollops of chevre you’ve picked out of your salad. Man cannot live on cheese alone (we’ve tried), so a good cheese basket will include some companions. Charcuterie items, like dried salamis, cured meats, and pates, are all good friends of a flavorful cheese. And don’t forget the crusty bread or good crackers and accompaniments like quince paste, stone-ground mustard, or even homemade apple butter. If you really like the person, you could include a bottle of wine, but then you’re really setting a high bar for next year.

The Breed Identification DNA Test Kit helps identify the breeds of dogs via DNA testing.

Be life of holiday party with DNA gifts By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Stumped about holiday gifts? Reach for the stuff of life itself. Gifts made of or merely related to DNA have multiplied over the last several years as interest in genealogy has picked up. You’ve got your basics, like coffee mugs and T-shirts with ye old double helix on them, but there are other things to order, wrap up and hand over as gifts. Some ideas:

Human DNA kits Yes, we’re talking saliva for the holidays. Oprah Winfrey was taken by one kit in particular, the Ancestry kit from a company called 23andMe . She put the kit on her 2017 list of her favorite things. According to some reviews, the kit has a good number of features, as does one from Ancestry.com, which boasts the world’s largest DNA network to reveal ancestors and where they came from. The 23andMe company, named for the 23 chromosomes in human DNA, also has a health kit to identify genetic risks and whether a person is a carrier of certain inherited conditions. The process of saliva collection is painless and straightforward at 23andMe, starting at buying the kit for $99. A gift recipient would then register at the company’s website, spit into a tube provided and return the sample with a prepaid label and box.

Dog DNA kits Because who doesn’t want to know the genetic makeup of man’s best friend. For $199, a company called Embark makes a dog DNA test that generates a report it says will identify everything from geographic origin to personality traits through the tracking of more than 200,000 genetic markers. With the hectic pace of today’s busy lifestyles, is it really all that surprising that people everywhere are craving new smart technologies? After all, life basically demands that you save time and money wherever you can, and smart technologies utilized in your home deliver both. It’s easy, right? Research shows one-third of Americans plan to buy smart home devices this season, and while you may not find much value in a “smart egg tray” (yes, they are real), the following devices can help you save time and money while increasing the functionality of your home. 1. Smart thermostats save you money. Few pieces of smart home technology can have a bigger impact on your home all year long than a smart thermostat. Honeywell’s Lyric T5 saves you energy by managing your home’s temperature for you. Using geofencing, the Lyric T5 saves you money by putting the thermostat into energy-saving mode when someone leaves, and detecting when the first person is nearing the home to start making the home comfortable ahead of his or her arrival. 2. Smart lights, a bright idea. Forgetting to turn the lights off when you leave a room or your home is a common occurrence. Unfortunately, your power company never forgets your energy usage, and this simple mistake will show up promptly on your bill. Installing smart lights like Philips Hue light bulbs allows you to turn the lights off and on with your smartphone, meaning no matter where you are, reducing your energy usage and expense is as easy as flicking a switch. You can also schedule them to turn on, even when you’re not home, which gives the appearance of someone being home, increasing your home’s security. 3. Security you can feel safe about. Whether it’s a baby crying or a smoke alarm, when

It is also equipped to differentiate between sounds so you know exactly what has happened at home. This allows you to stay on top of things and keep an eye on your home no matter

where you are. 4. Clean efficiently with smart cleaning technology. Vacuuming isn’t at the top of your list when it comes to ways to spend your free time, so automating the process may just be the best holiday present of all. iRobot’s Wi-Fi connected robotic vacuums, such as the Roomba 900 Series, are capable of cleaning and navigating an entire level of a home, recharging and resuming as needed until the job is done — all with just the push of a button on the robot or in the iRobot HOME App. Wi-Fi connected Roomba vacuums can also be controlled by voice-activated commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant devices, making communicating with your Roomba a breeze. A full fleet of smart sensors guide the Roomba around your home, making 60 decisions every second, traveling under furniture and around that clutter you’ve been meaning to pick up — when you finally have a free moment.

Coffee-table books go-to choice for readers By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Know a book lover with a coffee table and a passion? Then you’re good to go on a gift. Coffee-table books aren’t usually high on the self-purchase priority list but they can make great holiday gifts if chosen carefully. Some suggestions:

Fashion and style • Russell Westbrook, because why not? That’s the catchphrase of the NBA superstar who is one stylish guy and has put together a great book offering a glimpse into his world, celebrating trendsetters he admires along the way. Peep the baby photo of Westbrook in the back, gold chain on point, in “Russell Westbrook: Style Drivers,” Rizzoli New York, $55. Westbrook inspires in images, chunky quotes from the style drivers he has chosen and some product placement tracing his fashion collaborations. One of the most adorable moments: then-first lady Michelle Obama hugging Westbrook after he and his fellow Team USA members took gold at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. • The House of Dior is marking 70 years in fashion and there’s one special book for your Dior lover that covers a lot of ground: “Dior: The House of Dior, Seventy Years of Haute Couture,” National Gallery of Victoria, $65. The companion to an exhibition at the gallery in Melbourne, Australia, includes Christian Dior in his own words, including his passion for flowers carried over from his childhood. The book starts at the beginning, in 1947, and includes an inside look at the atelier. Eras are broken down by creative directors, including Yves Saint Laurent from 1957 to 1960 and John Galliano, from 1996 to 2011, straight on through to the first woman to head the house, today’s Maria Grazia Chiuri, named last year. • Speaking of anniversaries, Harper’s Bazaar is marking 150 years and the book, “Harper’s Bazaar 150 Years: The Greatest Moments,” captures some of the stars in modeling, fashion

“Good News, Part II” design and photography who helped shape the magazine over the decades. From Abrams, retailing at $65, the book offers some muchneeded cultural context, such as editor Glenda Bailey’s letter that ran soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. What, she mused, are we to feel for fashion right now? Her answer is the notion that the “exuberance that is fashion has its own role to play — even in (especially in) the worst of times.” There are first ladies, supermodels and a William Wegman dog wearing a Piaget diamond necklace and looking mighty haute couture.

Photography and art • Rihanna bathed in red, Havana light. A pregnant Melania Trump in a golden bikini. Neil Patrick Harris with a large snake’s tail down his pants. Welcome to “Annie Leibo-

“Annie Leibovitz Portraits: 2005-2016” ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOTOS These are visual recordings, tableaux featuring famous figures mostly in stunning color, including some memorable foldouts. The first volume includes a decade of unseen work. The second book has LaChappelle contemplating mortality and paradise. Tupac Shakur, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan and Isabella Blow included. • Based on an exhibition at the Tate Modern in London, “Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power,” D.A.P./ Distributed Art Publishers, $27.46, explores the years between 1963 and 1983 through the eyes of mostly black artists. The meaning of black identity, debates over “black art” in pamphlets and magazines, work by Faith Ringgold and Romare Bearden, and essays detailing the lives and roles of numerous others included. Also included is what went on during those years behind the scenes to boost the visibility of African-American artists in museum collections and exhibitions and to promote the rise of African-Americans to museum leadership roles. Key to that effort was the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition, which also worked to secure funding for prison art programs in the 1970s following the 1971 uprising at Attica State Prison.

vitz: Portraits 2005-2016,” the third volume in a series by the famed photographer. The book, from Phaidon, includes 150 photographs of artists, performers, writers, athletes, politicians and scientists, including LeBron James and his “chosen” tattoo and a stunning, stripped-down profile of Lupita Nyong’o close up. It’s a heavy lift, weight-wise and at $110, but it pretty much defines gifty coffee-table books for culture vultures. • David LaChappelle. Is he the Magritte of his surreal, celebrity fueled world? As Richard Avedon, another famous photographer, muses in The New York Times, the potential is there. Taschen has the honor of publishing the long-awaited last two installments in Etcetera LaChappelle’s five-book anthology, “Lost + Found, Part I” • “200 Women Who Will and “Good News, Part II,” sold Change the Way You See the separately at $69.99 each. People with a gift for giving say that this year, kitchen gadgets are the hot item to give and get. One reason may be the many new attractive, practical products now available. Here’s a look at six of the more popular: 1. A cordless electric glass kettle. There’ll be some steamy scenes when you give this elegant glass and brushed stainless steel item. The 360-degree cordless kettle lifts from its corded base for easy filling, pouring and serving and has a cool-touch bottom. The concealed heating element is never in contact with the water, so there’s no buildup of objectionable mineral deposits, and with 1,500 watts of power, it boils water faster than a stove or even the microwave. It holds 1 3/4 quarts, shuts itself off automatically when the water boils and has a comfortable, ergonomic handle. This Chef’sChoice Electric Glass Kettle #682 costs $69.99. Learn more about it at www.chefschoice.com. 2.
