WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans pulled back their pace of home-buying in April, as the shrinking number of houses for sale and rising prices are putting them in a bind as their options dwindle. The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that sales of existing homes declined 2.3 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.57 million. Still,
a stable job market has supported solid demand from buyers as home purchases are 1.6 percent higher than a year ago. But the specter of fewer homes for sale is starting to have an impact. Would-be buyers are mobbing open houses as sales are occurring in the shortest time ever recorded by the Realtors. The inventory of homes for sale has fallen on an annual basis for the past 23 months.

Rhone promotes homeownership in D.C. WASHINGTON — Once a year, thousands of Realtors from all over the country converge on Washington, D.C., to promote and protect private property rights. The Realtors Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo is where members of the National Association of Realtors take an active role to advance the real estate industry, public policy and the association. It is an annual event where Realtors can make a positive impact for their clients by attending special issues forums, committee meetings, legislative activities and the industry trade show. Taking an active role in the Realtor organization as a leader in the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors, Dorothy B. “Dot” Rhone, broker/owner of Century 21 Covered Bridges Realty Inc., Bloomsburg, participated in this event again earlier this month. An important issue that was discussed was federal tax reform and the importance of maintaining the mortgage interest deduction as well as the protection of sustainable homeownership, including preserving the secondary mortgage market, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. These components are critical to safeguard the 30-year, fixed rate mortgage and ensure families are not shut out of homeownership. The tax code has historically promoted homeownership. This is vital to the housing market and the economy. Homeownership provides social benefits to communities, increases neighborhood stability and community involvement. America must continue to encourage homeownership. Another important issue, especially in Columbia County as well as in other areas of the state, is the reauthorization of the Federal Flood Insurance Program without delay, includ-
ing better mapping and private options. In addition, as a Certified Residential Specialist designee and PA-CRS State Leader, Rhone completed a full day session to inspire, brainstorm and strategize with the CRS Outreach Mastermind Division. A highlight of the trip was the CRS Night Out, where members experienced a bit of Washington history with great food and networking perched atop the National Press Building within sight of the White House. The National Press Club was founded more than a century ago as a haven for Washington reporters and is now one of the most popular venues for events in downtown Washington.
