Kitchen Continued from page 1

kitchen ends and the rest of the home begins.” Interior designer Mikel Welch calls the kitchen “the new epicenter of the house.” “Everybody’s working from home,” and they often prefer doing that in an open kitchen rather than a sequestered home office. What are the features of a true “super kitchen”?

High-tech stations Designer Tiffany Brooks, host of HGTV’s “Most Embarrassing Rooms in America,” says homeowners want technology within easy reach, but protected from food and drink spills. Some add a built-in iPad docking area or laptop station on a counter, while others choose the less expensive option of adding a tablet dock mounted under a cabinet, with an arm that swings out. People also want power. Pop-up outlets are being installed directly into countertops, says Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design for the Home Depot. Wireless “charging countertops” are also available, including LG’s Tech Top and Dupont Corian. And homeowners are adding extra power outlets throughout the kitchen, and designing dedicated charging areas with power strips. The goal, says Fishburne, is to have “many outlets readily available for anything you might need to plug in, from computer to glue gun.” Another tech choice: Dishwashers that run almost silently, so they won’t distract you while you’re working in the kitchen. And full-size televisions are being added to the main cooking area so you can do your binge-watching in the same place where you try to avoid binge-eating. The traditional focus of kitchen planning — a stovesink-refrigerator triangle —

A built-in desK is designed to match the rest of the kitchen. has become a square, Welch says, with the TV added as a core necessity. Occasionally, new kitchen technology does involve food: “Warming drawers are huge,” Brooks says. Because many people work nontraditional hours, “somebody is cooking at 2,” she says, “but then somebody is eating at 5, and somebody is coming home at 9.” And some people, Welch says, “want to essentially bring Starbucks to them.” Restaurant-quality drink facilities are being added to home kitchens, including elaborate built-in tea and coffee stations, built-in soda systems, faucets with a sparkling water spigot and temperaturecontrolled wine refrigerators.

Seating and storage “An emerging trend is two islands being incorporated into a kitchen, if there is space,” says Fishburne. “This allows for a prep island and an island to accommodate other family functions like

work or homework while you are preparing dinner.” Several of Welch’s design clients have requested oversize countertops that “allow six to eight people to comfortably sit with barstools,” he says. Lounging-friendly seating is a priority, whether or not guests will be eating. If a kitchen doesn’t have space for a sectional sofa or other large seating, some homeowners are knocking down walls to merge the kitchen with other rooms. Houzz says half of its survey respondents reported making their kitchens more open to other indoor spaces. And along with opening up the kitchen to the rest of the house, many homeowners are decorating the kitchen to match other rooms. “The kitchen is becoming a lot prettier,” Brooks says. “It is what the living room was” years ago. The kitchen backsplash area can be a creative showcase, the designers say, using

custom-made tiles or even antique mirrored glass. Kitchen storage, too, is becoming more stylish and more organized. Closet-design systems originally conceived for bedroom closets are now being used to organize kitchen cabinets and pantries, Brooks says. And rather than cramming work papers or family files into a cabinet designed for dishes, designers are building office and crafts storage into the kitchen. Many kitchens now have desks or computer workstations, and the days of bringing in “horrible, chunky rolling cabinets” to store files is over, says Welch. Nonkitchen items are stored in “built-ins that match the rest of the kitchen.” Whether they’re asking for the most flattering lighting or details like high-end brass cabinet pulls, clients want everything to be beautiful, Welch says. More than ever, they want “that visual ‘wow’ factor.”

Your GArAGe door needs regular maintenance to operate smoothly and efficiently. A new email program for homeowners offers twice-a-year maintenance reminders.

might be time for lube if garage door squeaks and groans Courtesy of Brandpoint

Your garage door — just like Oz’s Tin Man — needs regular lubrication in order to move freely. While the Tin Man could ask Dorothy for the oil can, your garage door can only squeak and groan and hope you’re paying attention. But now, your garage door can send you an email to remind you that it’s time for maintenance. A new program from the International Door Association (IDA) — a worldwide trade association of door and access systems professionals — invites consumers to register for twice-a-year emails from its consumer website, GarageDoorCare. com. The emails will carry a simple message — it’s time to lubricate your garage door. Does lubrication sound difficult? It’s not, really — it’s something any homeowner can do in less than five minutes. And twice-ayear lubrication is the first step to keeping a garage door in peak operating condition. That’s important, because the garage door may be the most ignored appliance in a home.

Simple step A 2014 survey on garage door maintenance conducted by the Harris Poll found that 27 percent of homeowners surveyed said that their garage door’s hinges and rollers had never been lubricated and 12 percent aren’t sure when they were last lubricated. “Lubrication is the simplest step a homeowner can take to make sure their garage door remains in good working order,” says Chris

Long, managing director of IDA. “All you need to do is spray a small amount of garage door lubricant to the hinges, rollers and springs. A visit to GarageDoorCare. com can provide more details on lubrication and other basic steps homeowners can take to keep their garage door in top condition.” Long wants homeowners to know that by signing up for the email program, folks aren’t signing up for a flood of marketing emails or sales calls. “IDA is offering this as a service to homeowners, nothing more,” he says. “If a homeowner needs more extensive garage door repair services or isn’t comfortable performing basic maintenance tasks, they can find nearby garage door professionals by entering their ZIP code on our website’s Find a Qualified Professional page.”

Tasks to perform G a r a g e D o o r C a r e. c o m also provides information that details other tasks that homeowners can perform to ensure that their garage door remains in top operating conditions, such as: • Visual inspection of the door’s springs, cables, rollers, pulleys and mounting hardware • Door balance test • Reverse mechanism test • Photo eye test The site includes a list of 10 things every homeowner should know about garage door safety. A special page is devoted to children and garage door safety. Your garage door may be showing you warning signs that it needs maintenance. Please don’t ignore them.

From cleaning out the garage to upgrading your floors and windows, it often seems like home improvement projects will never end. While you may be dedicated to making your home a better place, it’s also important to consider how it affects your carbon footprint. Are you doing everything you can to make your home earth friendly? Not only could your home benefit from energy-saving changes, but you can also lower your utility bills and live green without sacrificing your style. While Earth Day falls in the month of April, it’s not the only time to commit to environmental stewardship. Consider some of these ideas to be both earth friendly and cost effective year round: • Choose the right materials Start the planning stage of your project by selecting materials with low impact on the environment. For example, reclaimed wood is durable, versatile and renewable, and can add beauty and timelessness to your home. Since it is recycled, your reclaimed wood project doesn’t involve chopping down or harming any new trees. Other ecofriendly alternatives include linoleum instead of vinyl, low or no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, bamboo and cork. • Rent your project tools Before you go out and buy all the tools and equipment you need for each home improvement project, do a little research to find out what you can rent. Not only does this save you money, but it also limits energy consumption, pollution and waste associated with manufacturing, storing and maintaining new equipment. You can easily find a rental company on RentalHQ.com to provide a variety of products such as aerators, augers, jackhammers, pressure washers, chainsaws and more. • Hire savvy professionals If you’re undergoing a serious remodel, you’ll most likely be working with a contractor, designer or other professional to review your plans and turn them into reality. Make sure you not only hire the right people, but make your goal of going green loud and clear. Ask to see examples of their work and have them explain what tactics they use to be environmentally friendly. • Use energy efficient equipment If possible, make sure the appliances, tools and equipment in your home have the ENERGY STAR label. This means that the Environmen-

The ENERGY STAR label is becoming more widely recognized as more consumers bring these types of appliances — like ovens, stoves and HVAC systems — into their home for both cost and energy savings. • Try eco-friendly lighting A lighting upgrade is essential for an earth-friendly home. While LED and CFL lightbulbs tend to cost more upfront, they use significantly less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, so you’ll save more in the long run. • Invest in water-saving features Fixtures like low flow faucets, toilets and showerheads are just a few of the ways you can conserve water in your home and reduce the amount of your water bills. Additionally, there are plenty of washing machine and dishwasher options that give you the same level of cleaning power while saving both water and energy. Going green doesn’t have to be difficult or costly. Use these tips to save money each month and impact the world around you in a positive way. HOME IMPROVEMENT

Go back to future by painting hardwood floors by melissA rAYWortH Associated Press Writer

Worn and faded hardwood floors can drag down the look of a room. But having scuffed floors sanded down and restained can be expensive and messy. One alternative that’s gaining popularity: painting older hardwood floors. You can add solid color, stripes, or any imaginable stenciled or handdrawn patterns to a floor. There’s actually a long tradition of painted wooden floors in American homes, says Tom Silva, general contractor on the long-running PBS television series “This Old House.” One hundred years ago, paint was considered a practical way to protect floors and add some beauty in the process. In a survey done this month of more than 1,200 users on the home-improvement website Houzz.com, 15 percent said they’re ready to make the leap to painting while 85 percent were still more comfortable with stained wood floors. But Houzz editor Sheila Schmitz says some of the site’s members who have embraced painted floors have done so with real creativity. “We’ve seen homeowners reinvent their floors with glossy white paint, oversize stripes, checkerboards with alternating natural and painted finishes, and even more fanciful shapes,” Schmitz says. It’s a DIY project that requires effort but little experience. So how do you do it, and what are some of the boldest, most interesting approaches you can take?

Prep smart Fans of painted floors point out that the process is less labor-intensive than staining because you don’t have to sand away every old scratch or stain. But that doesn’t mean you can skip the step of prepping your floors. Clean the floor well, says Silva, then scuff it with sandpaper just enough to create a slightly rough surface. That prep work is the key to making sure the first layer of paint or primer will adhere. Primer isn’t required if the floor already has some finish on it. But putting down a few thin, clear coats of primer can make it easier if you decide years from now to remove the paint. If you do prime the floor, use sandpaper to lightly scuff that clear coat after it dries to help subsequent painted coats adhere well.

riCH red pAint on the hardwood floor brings warmth and color to this stylish, gender-neutral nursery. Painting hardwood floors can be an inexpensive and easy solution, especially in rooms where the floor has become worn and scuffed after many years of use. in 2010. The room previously had green walls and a stained wood floor. Pavone switched the walls to a creamy white (she used Martha Stewart’s “Glass of Milk”) and covered the wood floor with jade green paint. She considered using marine paint but chose a formula called Break-Through!, which dries quickly and creates a harder surface than many other types of paint. Five years later, Pavone is still thrilled with the result. The floors “always get a ‘Wow’ when new people come to my house,” she says. “The only thing I didn’t take into account was the wear and tear of two dogs and now two kids. The claws on the dogs do scratch the floors up a bit. But I try to pretend that if I saw that in a store display in Anthropologie, I would think it was fabulous. So I don’t stress.” Because the kitchen is a high-traffic area, Pavone has repainted the floors once every two years to keep them looking shiny and scratch-free. But that work is relatively easy. “It’s a really fast project and normally only takes around two hours,” she says. “I would totally do it again!”

they’ve accomplished with home enhancements. Most human-cat relationships can be improved by clearing up one basic misunderstanding, Galaxy said in a recent interview from Los Angeles: “Cats are not dogs. Cats care not at all about pleasing you. That’s not why they’re here. You have to get your ego out of the way when it comes to having a good relationship with a cat. You have to compromise to live successfully with them.” Benjamin writes a “Catification” column at JacksonGalaxy.com on cat design and sells a line of her own cat products at her site, Hauspanther.com. She and her fiancé live with 11 cats in a condo of about 1,100 square feet, plus a large enclosed “catio,” in Phoenix. Two more cats live in her design studio. Some terms and ideas for a cat-friendly home:

dAsH tHe Kitten sits in a space to himself, away from the home’s three dogs, in the book, “Catify to Satisfy: Simple Solutions for Creating a Cat-Friendly Home.”

Caving vs. cocooning Caving is the thing cats do when looking to hide deeply away out of fear. Cocooning is when they go to a moveable, semi-enclosed haven to help bring their stress level down. Benjamin and Galaxy advocate creating a “base camp” for a new cat, meaning a defined room or space where territory can be established. Potential caving areas, such as under a bed or at the top of a closet, should be blocked off. A cocoon can be anything from a paper bag to a cardboard box to a cat carrier. It should slowly be moved out of base camp as socialization progresses. “Catification is a lot of DIY,” Benjamin said. “You don’t have to buy anything. You can look at what you already have and do a little rearranging.” The time it takes to move beyond base camp varies. You should be able to tell when a cat is ready by body language and behavior.

That tells you what type of material, incline and environment to provide as an alternative. Location is everything when it comes to scratchers. If your cat constantly plays with the door jamb in your bedroom, you’d be a fool not to match that slant and place a scratcher nearby.

Be sure to observe Before you make changes to your home, understand basic behaviors. Start by simply watching your cat. “We really do anthropomorphize cats a lot more than we should,” Benjamin said. “You really have to understand their true nature, their instincts and their needs.” Some basic personality archetypes: the Mojito Cat, who is social, outgoing and confident of her territory; the Wallflower Cat, who lacks such confidence and slinks around on the periphery to avoid confrontation; and the Napoleon Cat, who sprays, bullies and otherwise postures aggressively. Many cats are a mix of the three.

Scent marking Marking and claiming territory has everything to do with scent. Cats love to mix their scents with yours. “People wonder, ‘Why does my cat always come and sit on my sweaters?’ Because it has your scent on it. They ask, ‘Why do they want to be in the bedroom? ...’ They want to be in your bedroom because that’s where the scent is strongest,” Benjamin said.

If you’re looking to keep kitty off your sweaters or keyboard, set up a scent-soaked station nearby, such as a no-slip shelf or table top as a perch. “You want to give them things that are acceptable to scratch and rub on rather than constantly yelling at them for doing those things on objects you don’t want them on,” Benjamin said. “I have a number of perches around my desk.”

discovered that yoga mats are great scratchers. Consider swatches. Some cats are horizontal, vertical or incline scratchers. “You have to get in there and really pay attention,” Benjamin said. One reason your cat likes to scratch your sofa, for example, is to mix your scent with hers. But the sofa might also be made of a deliciously scratchable material. And it’s

— or extremely handy — cat owner, you might build one of those mega-climbing routes along a wall. For extra stimulation, build more than one pathway and type of perch. Provide no-slip surfaces and materials that absorb scent. Incorporate boxy hidey-holes, baskets or beds. In general, cat owners should do more with vertical space, Galaxy said. “We forget that when cat walks into a room, cat is taking the entire square footage, meaning not just the floor, not just couch level, but the ceiling as well,” he said. “When you add shelving around a room, or when you create a cat superhighway ... you’ve just increased that territorial mojo in a way that nothing else can.” Cat owners with outdoor space can connect an interior

Wood’s beauty can turn home into architectural masterpiece Courtesy of Brandpoint

Ever since humans stopped dwelling in caves and started living in huts made of tree branches, wood has been an indispensable structural and decorative residential material. Man’s house-building relationship with wood — historically, culturally and experientially — is deep, long and universal. In part that’s because wood is abundant, economical, durable and flexible. But our enduring love affair with wood is also due to the fact that, like us, each piece of timber is unique — its color, texture and grain are as individual as a human personality, so we keep discovering new aspects of its beauty and versatility to delight in. Architects, designers and homeowners are creatively using wood’s inimitable qualities to bring character, warmth and distinction to different parts of the modern home. In Denver, Colo., Sun Mountain Inc., a manufacturer of custom doors and flooring, used select-grade alder — a hardwood with a tight grain and few knotholes — for a traditionalstyle double front door. The elegantly rustic design, which combines solid alder with glass panels and metal hardware, is set off by the house’s dry-stacked limestone walls. “The double-pane glass doorlites are hermetically sealed for insulation against the Colorado winters,” says Ed Wright, Sun Mountain’s vice president of marketing. “And the door handles are bronze with a rubbed oil finish.” The total effect is at once substantial and low-key — country style that’s sophisticated but with a sense of welcome that is so essential for a front entrance. An entry hall is an equally suitable space for the beguiling charms of hardwood. Behind the custom poplar front door of a new residence in Gladwyne, Pa. — a collaboration between Archer & Buchanan Architecture Ltd., and E.B. Mahoney Builders Inc. — the hall is a fine example of traditional, millworkintensive style. Featuring a beautifully proportioned staircase, painted poplar paneling and wide-plank flooring, it was inspired by the work of architect R. Brognard Okie, who designed many fine Colonial Revival houses in the Philadelphia area between 1900 and 1945. The hall’s sense of Old World graciousness is further enhanced by the use of locally sourced red oak for the floors and stair treads. “The 24-inches to 32-inches wide planks come from a Bucks County, Pennsylvania, mill run by two brothers in their seventies,” says builder Ed Mahoney. “The workshop was surrounded by huge old-growth oak trees from which the planks were cut — they had to be ordered months in advance. The boards are plain — not tongue and groove — and stained with a satin finish. We left them in the

When drafting a to-do list for home improvements that can increase home value and appeal, several renovations may be atop homeowners’ lists. While kitchen or bathroom remodels may be popular renovations, homeowners also should consider outdoor lighting schemes that can make homes safer and more alluring. Outdoor lighting serves various purposes. Such lighting can draw attention to more impressive parts of a property. In addition, such lighting can improve security and deter criminals. To get started, homeowners should first examine the exteriors of their homes and make note of existing lighting and where improvements can be made. If you’re not sure where to begin, speak with an electrician or a landscape designer, each of whom can offer suggestions on lighting and which options are the best fit for your particular property. Next, you’ll want to consider efficiency and function. The United States Department of Energy suggests incorporating energyefficient lighting, including energy-saving LED bulbs or fluorescent lights, into your plans. Timers and other automatic controls can prevent waste by turning lights on only when they are needed. Solar lights can be used as accent lights, further saving energy.

Include lights to frame the front door and call attention to certain elements, such as decorative trees or water features. Use lights to light up deck stairways or to accent planters. Speak with a lighting professional about how to position lights to cover the most territory in the most attractive way possible.

Safety

Safety is an important consideration when improving a home. Lighting can help illuminate potential hazards or draw attention to borders or property boundaries. Navigating in the dark can be treacherous, so put lights along pathways and near pools or spas. Be sure that lights will clearly mark other walkways around your home, such as those leading from doors to the yard or from the garage to where Beauty trash and recycling pails When addressing aesthet- are kept. If a design element ics, think about the appeal such as a bridge over a water

feature or a particular ornamental tree or shrub is difficult to navigate in the dark, use lights to improve visibility.

Security Added security is another reason to install more exterior lighting. Dark homes are attractive to burglars. Eliminate dark corners by lighting up areas where thieves may be able to gain access to your home. This includes areas near doorways and groundlevel windows. Install motion-sensor lights in such areas so you are not wasting energy. Lighting may not only deter human intruders, but also it can scare away animals. A raccoon, skunk or opossum may think twice about hanging around your home when your property is bathed in a spotlight. Revamping exterior lighting elements can improve the safety and the look of a home.

AtlAntA-bAsed ArCHiteCt stephen fuller has turned this library into an intimate retreat by using oak on the walls, floor, and ceiling, captured by t.J. Getz. house for a month to stabilize before installing them.” Wood can be used to create a sense of intimacy and ease and is demonstrated in the library of a very large retreat in Lake Keowee, S.C. Not only is the fireplace surrounded by quarter-sawn oak mantle and trim, the whole room is paneled in the same hardwood, which is also used for the coffered ceiling and floors. The library’s intimate scale and traditional detailing were inspired by a ship captain’s quarters — a subtle reference to both the home’s lakeside location and the style in which the house is built. Designed by Atlanta-based architect Stephen Fuller and constructed by Gabriel Builders Inc., the imposing house is a playful take on the grand Shingle Style made famous by New England’s “summer cottages.” But Fuller made sure to include a number of smaller, cozier rooms where the family would feel snug and comfortable, and he often used wood to achieve this. Such is the case in the library, where the wonderful familiarity of the oak makes the room a tranquil, reassuring haven. For a closer look at the use of hardwoods in these and other projects, visit www.HardwoodInfo.com. No matter what style of home you prefer, from the traditional to the modern, American hardwoods in all their diversity will allow you to realize that vision perfectly.

popularity of proper pantries proliferates by melissA Kossler dutton Associated Press Writer

Teresa Keller used to joke that she was pantry-challenged. She often relied on a flashlight to search the deep, dark cupboard that held her canned goods and other food items. When she and her husband, Dave, decided to build a home in Sunbury, Ohio, a proper pantry was a priority. “I brought it up to the builder, said Teresa Keller, who moved into the new house in October. “I told them I’ve got to have this. The Kellers’ new “super pantry is a walk-in, with plenty of quality shelving to store drinks, trash bags and other household goods bought in bulk. One shelf is dedicated to snacks for the grandchildren. A small door connects it to the garage, so groceries can be unloaded easily. “At a certain price point, it’s what people are expecting — more storage, said Ed Snodgrass, vice president of P&D Builders in Delaware, Ohio, which built the Kellers’ house. Many new homeowners are asking for larger pantries, said Kermit Baker, chief economist for the American Institute of Architects in Washington, D.C. In a recent survey by the group, 43 percent of residential architects reported that customers placed an increased emphasis on pantry space. Besides storing food, some of the newer, bigger pantries offer storage for china and serving pieces that are used just a few times a year. Some include spaces for toasting bread, brewing coffee and chilling wine. Others have spots for laptops, or sinks for prepping food and washing pets.

Ample Counter spACe and open shelving with decorative brackets create a functional corner pantry with a place for everything.

Driving the trend Open floor plans, building costs and big-box stores, where people buy cases of water and months’ worth of paper towels, are driving the trend, industry experts said. “The ‘super’ pantry is a backlash to the open floor plan, said Amy Beth Cupp Dragoo, an interior designer who works in New York City and Litchfield County, Connecticut. “People have been living in the open concept house long enough now to know that if the kitchen is messy, the whole place feels

Homeowners no longer feel the need to leave their high-end mixers and coffee makers on the counter, added Bob Vila, the longtime homeimprovement TV show host who now dispenses advice at

www.bobvila.com . “There was a generation for whom all of these things were brand new luxuries and they wanted to show them off, he said. Now the emphasis is on decluttering. Builder Michael Menghini gets more and more requests

for electrical outlets in pantries. “People want to leave their appliances out, they just don’t want to leave them on their counters, said Menghini, president of Covenant Custom Homes in Overland Park, Kansas. Storing appliances, large pots and serving pieces in a

It’s cheaper to install open shelving in a pantry than to build more kitchen cabinets, which require counter tops and hardware. “I have been a booster of the concept of pantries for as long as I can remember, he said. “It minimizes the amount of money spent on kitchen cabinets. In older homes, finding

space for pantries can be difficult. Many layouts will not accommodate them. One idea is to create space by installing kitchen cabinets that stretch all the way to the ceiling, Vila said. Even if they are hard to reach, they can hold things you don’t use regularly. Another option: Add cupboards in the garage for appliances and non-food items.

How you can age in place comfortably ing small adjustments in a home over time, such as adding stair lifts and handicapped accessible and curbless showers, can make all the difference in aging safety.

Having lived in the same ranch house for 55 years, John Heck’s grandparents wanted to make any and all necessary accommodations to allow them to peacefully age in place. Using his expertise as a home remodeler, Heck completed a variety of aging-inplace related projects in their house, including adding grab bars to the bathroom and other small comforts. “I feel very lucky knowing my grandparents live in a one story and have my assistance making home adjustments to ensure that they can independently age in place,” said Heck, owner of VIP Remodeling & Construction Services, LLC. “Many folks who ignore the fact that they are aging and need to make adjustments wind up injuring themselves and being uprooted from a more affordable, comfortable lifestyle and proximity to loved ones.”

Older population With the number of U.S. residents 65 or older growing from 35 million in 2000 to nearly 73 million in 2030 according to the U.S. Census Bureau, baby boomers entering or approaching retirement need to be aware of how they can best prepare to age comfortably. HOME IMPROVEMENT

learning home design from hotels by betH J. HArpAz

said Kemper Hyers, head of design for Starwood Capital Group, which created the hotel. Yet lighting is sometimes overlooked in home design. Lighting your home isn’t just about finding the perfect lamp, Hyers said. It’s also about “painting with light. How do I bring this room to light?” Some tips: • Experiment with tape embedded with LED lights. It’s inexpensive, easy to apply and remove, and widely available. The tape is not only handy for illuminating a shelf or dark corner, but it can also light a wall behind a piece of furniture or spotlight a work of art. • When you buy LED bulbs, “don’t go any cooler than 2700 warm white,” said Hyers, referring to the numerical scale used to measure bulb color. The higher the number, the whiter and cooler the light. • Bulb design improves every few months, so look for the latest options and “play with a mix of bulbs.” You can even buy LED bulbs shaped like classic “Edison bulbs with the long filament, perfectly done,” Hyers said.

NEW YORK — You know that feeling you get when you walk into a hotel room and you just want to fall on that big white bedspread with the fluffy pillows? Here are some tips from three hotel brands — Renaissance, Baccarat and Loews — on how to create that same serene and inviting atmosphere at home.

Surprise and delight Marriott opens the Renaissance NY Midtown hotel this spring in Manhattan. Its design concept involves creating moments of “surprise and delight” in public spaces like the lobby and dining areas, as well as in guest rooms. For example, open a closet door and inside you’ll find bold graphics livening up a space that’s usually unadorned. Toni Stoeckl, vice president of Marriott’s Lifestyle Brands, offers these tips for a similar approach in home design: • Target all the senses, including “what you see, the music, the fragrance,” said Stoeckl. • Pepper the environment with “moments to love,” he said. But remember: “Less is more: If you have too much art, you can’t pay attention to any one piece.” Good interior design is “more about uncovering beauty and decluttering space.” • Keep design elements “real and authentic. No fake flowers, no fake candles.” • Change artwork periodically. “Have a few pieces of art that you rotate,” said Stoeckl. Consider using the seasons as a scheduling guide for when to change displays. • Showcase objects and art that have layers of interest or meaningful stories. For example, a large, bright red work of abstract art near the hotel’s front desk is comprised entirely of buttons, but you can’t see the buttons until you get close. The button art was inspired by the hotel’s

Avoid mistakes on next flooring project Tips to help save time, money

If you’ve repainted the walls, added new furniture and changed your sofa pillows, yet something is still amiss in your home, consider that large surface area: the floor. Floors set the tone of your living space. To avoid surprises and unexpected costs, try these tips from the World Floor Covering Association.

Find right flooring

There are a few more things to consider. The following list of questions prepared by the World Floor Covering Association can help you make an informed choice and avoid unexpected costs and surprises: • Does the retailer offer a complimentary inspection prior to installation to determine what kind of substrate you have and whether it is flat? • What does the retailer charge to remove and dispose of old flooring? Removing flooring can increase costs substantially, so you may want to find flooring that can go over your existing flooring. • Will your doors clear your NAPS/IVC Group new floors? When it comes to selecting the most appropriate flooring for your home, consider how it will be used and how often. A high-traffic room demands materials that can stand up to wear and tear. Clear the room. Remove fragile and valuable items and appliances, books and decorations. Artwork and photographs on the walls should also be taken down. alternative flooring materials. • Does the retailer charge to move furniture? Be sure to mention heavy items that might not be found in every home, such as a piano. • If the new flooring is going into a bathroom, will the retailer remove the toilet as part of their installation? • Does your new flooring need to be acclimated prior to installation? • Will the installers clean up after themselves?

Post-installation

Prepare for installation

Thoroughly inspect the flooring. Immediately bring any concerns to the store’s attention. Most importantly, enjoy your new floors! For further facts or to find a nearby flooring retailer, visit the World Floor Covering Association at www.wfca.org.

The retailer should provide a checklist on how to prepare for installation. In addition, if your renovation project involves painting or staining walls where new floors are going to be put down, the wall treatment should be completed first.
