On the 3rd and 4th of September, a meeting of teams from seven nations took place in the National Assembly building to discuss a Euro Commission project. The meeting was organized by the MU Varna under the patronage of the Parliamentary Commission of Healthcare, according to the EC program for the “Joint Action On Health Workforce Planning And Forecasting”. The Joint Action affects all EU member states and the future of their healthcare systems, with a scope encompassing mobility, access to healthcare for different social groups, education and specialization of medical personnel, and effective distribution of resources in healthcare and human development. The meeting was opened by the director of the program Michel Van Hoegaerden, followed by greetings to all project members from the President of the Commission of Healthcare Dr. Nigyar Jafer; the President of the Commission of Education and Knowledge Prof. Vanya Dobreva; Mrs. Careline Heger, representative of the EU Commission; and the ViceMinister of Healthcare Prof. Dr. Chavdar Slavov. At the end of the work session each participant ϐ ǡ the Rector of the Mu Varna Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov, the head of Work Package 7 Prof. Todorka Kostadinova, and the director of the program, Michel Van Hoegaerden.

The new academic year 2013/2014 has began in MU Varna The new academic year 2013-2014 of MU Varna started on September 16, 2013 in Varna with over 3500 students from 34 countries crossing the threshold of the university. After the ceremony the Rector of the Medical University of Varna-Prof. Dr. Krassimir Ivanov, ǡ ϐ ϐ na as one of the most dynamic universities in the country. For the past year the university has won 34 projects totaling over 6 million ϐ ǡ ǡ cation and research. During this period of career development 12 professors and ǡ ͳͺ ϐ professors and lecturers from MU Varna issued and published more than 630 scien ϐ Ǥ Prof. Krasimir Ivanov noted that MU Varna has partnered with 51 universities from three continents , and its supervisors live and work in over 40 countries worldwide. The rector of the university mentioned the massive investments that the university made in the past year related to renovation of dormitories and sports facilities, modernization of classrooms and hospitals and the introduction of the most modern and interactive teaching methods . At the end of his speech, Prof. Ivanov assured the students that they have chosen the best place for their education . The freshmen students with the highest success rate of SSC 2013 of “Medicine”, “Dentistry” “Pharmacy“ and “Health Management” greeted their colleagues and opened the academic year at MU Varna withthe traditional “oath of the freshmen“. Freshman party: Medical Inception September has come! The summer vacation has al ϐ Ǥ ͳ͸ ǡʹͲͳͶ start of the new academic year 2013/2014 in MU Varna. And in that spirit we, the members of the Students Union to the MU Varna, arranged the traditional, and one of the biggest parties of the year - “The Freshmen party”. In our opinion this is the best way to say “goodbye” to the summer, say “Hi” to the “golden fall”, and to show the relationship between the students of our university.

From the sixth to the ninth of September, 2013 a meeting on the project “ToyBox” was held in Varna with a consortium of six teams from different countries (Belgium, Germany, Spain, Greece, Poland, and Bulgaria). The team from MU Varna, led by Prof. Dr. Violeta Iotova, proved once again its depth of professional experience, and was granted the right to organize a meeting of teams working on the project in Varna; something which had not been contained within the original project plan.

The host of the party was one of the best night clubs in the seaside capital - Xtravaganzza. The party was held on the 19th of September at 23:00. In addition to the free entry and promotions on alcohol, we organized many games and surprises. The event surpassed our biggest expectations with over a 1000 people Open House for International Students from all the specialities and courses of the MU Varna in attendance. They showed once again that students of the university can have a high quality party life and not only a quality edication!

On the 11th of September, the Medical University Varna hosted an Open House for prospective students from England, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Canada, Iceland, and Turkey. The guest students were welcomed in the 2nd auditorium at 10:00 am by the Vice-Rector of educational affairs Ass. Prof. Albena Kerekovska, after which they were introduced to the university and it’s teaching base. They then visited the faculty of dental medicine and student dormitories, and a little later they had the opportunity to get to know about the Seaside Capitol’s sights.

Other news XIII national conference of coloproctology

The end of September was met with an important educational event in the sphere of coloproctology. The eighth national conference of coloproctology was held in Hotel Admiral in Golden Sands with international attendance. Lectors from 10 countries were invited and actively participated, including the USA, Italy, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Jordan, and Macedonia.The conference ϐ ǡ with over 350 registered attendees. The conference was opened in the archeological museum in Varna by the Rector of the MU Varna and President of the organizational committee of the conference Prof. dr. Krasimir Ivanov. Among the themes of the conference were malignant diseases of the colon, ǡ ϐ tory diseases of the color, and surgical treatment of liver metastases from colorectal cancer. The latest advances in coloproctology were also presented.

New recruits in the Students Union for the specialities Medicine, Dental medicine and Pharmacy

On the 30th of september 2013 in the interval between 8:00 and 17:00 o’clock the partial ϐ ǡ ϐ Ǥ election day went smoothly, and we have to point out that this was a very interesting event for the new students of the university. The evidence lies in the number of candidatures for the quotas - 20 for the three specialities. At the end of the election day, after the members of the Election committee counted the votes, there were 197 electors, of which:

On 23rd of September, 2013, Monday, in front of the dramatic theater “ Stephen Kirov” in Sliven was the opening of the new academic year at the Medical University Varna – Branch in Sliven. During the academic ʹͲͳ͵ȀʹͲͳͶ ϐ wives will be taught. Guests of the event, including the Mayor and governor of district Sliven, members of current and former National Assembly, directors of ϐ ing ceremony. Under the solemn sounds of the Student anthem led by the person who carried the scepter of the University all Academic leadership of the Medical University of Varna came out dressed in togas. Ceremony for health and wellbeing was performed by the bishop of Sliven Yoanikii. The Rector of the Medical University of Varna - Prof. Krasimir Ivanov, de ϐ Ǥ he stressed the success of the project as a result of the teamwork, strong will and desire of the Sliven public that after surveys proved that the region has a great need for medical staff, nurses and midwives. Prof. Krasimir Ivanov gave thanks to the previous and the current regional government of Sliven, to the municipal government and the mayor of the town, the deputies of Sliven, to the leadership of the Hospital “Dr. Ivan Seliminski“ and Hospital “Hadji Dimitar “ . Hospital “ Dr. Ivan Seliminski“ will provide the branch with part of its facilities, and the practical part of the training will be placed in hospital “Hadji Dimitar “. A bit later , after ϐ ǡ Union at MU Varna greeted all freshmen , wishing them luck and success . Immediately thereafter two representatives of the Student Council of the Branch Sliven were selected. As representatives of the SU were selected Donka Angelova and Teresa Kocheva, showing their interest in the structure and willingness to help .

From the eleventh to the thirteenth of October the yearly symposium “Varna Echo 6” was held in hotel Riviera Beach near Varna. The forum was organized by the society of echography specialists “VARNAECHO” with the work group for echocardiography of the Society of Cardiologists in Bulgaria, and the MU Varna. The themes of this year’s symposium were left atrium, congenital heart defects in adults, and diseases of the pericardium. Practical and theoretical courses on diagnosis of the deformation of the left ventricle and left atrium (strain and strain rate) were also organized. Among the international lectors invited were: Prof. Jens-Uwe Voit, Leuven, Belgium; Prof. Werner Budts, Leuven, Belgium; Prof. Arsen Ristich, Belgrade, Sebia and Dr. Alexander van der Bruaene, Leuven, Belgium. Many Bulgarian specialists in echocardiography were also present.

Varna – host of the international conference on otology and rhinology

On the 18-19 October, the conference “Functional Surgery in Otology and Rhinology” was held in the resort complex St. Constantine and Elena. The conference continues the tradition of international forums in the ϐ Ǧ otology held in Stara Zagora for the past 13 years. The event was held on the day of Bulgaria’s patron saint, St. Ivan Rilski, and the day of the Bulgarian doctor, October 19th. The forum was attended and greatly enriched by the attendance of the world famous surgeon in the ϐ Ǧ otology Prf. Dr. Jacque Manion from Marseille, and the top authority and specialist in ϐ ǡ Ǥ Dr. Pavel Dimov. The French specialist helped to introduce new forms and European guidelines to the Bulgarian education system. Prof. Dr. Jacque Manion is the founder of the European Academy of Otology and Neuro-Otology and is a longstanding president of the World organization of otorhinolaryngology. The conference was held with the patronage of the rektor of the MU Varna, Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov and the rector of the Thracian University - Stara Zagora, Prof. Dr. Ivan Stankov.

The Medical University of Varna was founded as the Medical Institute in 1960. October 1, 1961 is considered Ǥ ϐ ϐ ϐ medicine in northeastern Bulgaria. The creation of the third medical university in Bulgaria was in response to ϐ staff and specialized medical assistance to the population of this region of Bulgaria . ϐ ͳͲ educational and research purposes. Much attention was paid to the continuous improvement of the practical training. With the expansion of the Institute the construction of new hospital buildings for training purposes and the needs of health care in northeastern Bulgaria was organised. An obstetric hospital, a psychiatric hospital (the largest on the Balkan peninsula), an ophtalmology Hospital and the Therapeutic Hospital ( called now: University Hospital ,, St. Marina “ Varna EAD ). The creation of the Medical Academy in 1972 (existing until 1987) and the inclusion of all higher medical institutions in the country in its structure gave new opportunities for all-round development. In 1978 revealed a Branch of Medical University Varna was founded in Dobrich (Tolbuhin) for the training of medical students from third to sixth year. Medical University of Varna emerged as a major center for training medical staff, for research and medical diagnostics, for consultative, organizational and methodological assistance . It has a modern and valuable equipment.

In 2007, through a project funded by the Ministry of Education , in MU Varna Nutrigenomics Laboratory was established, equipped with modern equipment for molecularbiological research. In 2008, the new Faculty of Pharmacy was created. With the opening of two new faculties - the Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy , MU Varna acquires the complete structure of a traditional university in those regulated professions.

What should be the “New long-term concept for psychological health”? This was the theme discussed by Bulgarian and international psychiatrists from the 18th to the 20th of October at the 21st annual conference of the Bulgarian Psychiatric Association. The event, held at the hotel Admiral in Golden Sands, was attended by close to 250 specialists from Bulgaria France, England, Macedonia, and Germany. The conference aimed to form a work group of ϐ try who, in the course of the next 3 months, are to develop a long-term vision for changes to the politics of psychiatric healthcare in Bulgaria for the next 15-20 years. The third class of dentists from the MU Varna receive their diplomas

On the 19th of Oc ǡ ͳͲǣ͵Ͳ ϐ auditorium of the Festival Complex Varna, the graduation for the class of 2013 in dental medicine took place. The Saturday was a long-awaited and festive moment for the 66 young dentists, as they recited the Hippocratic Oath. The third class of the newest and most modern dental faculty in Bulgaria will be remembered in the history of the university as one of the most active. On the initiative of students, the ϐ prevention of oral cancer “If you have doubts, check” was held. Members of the class of 2013 represented the MU ϐ tional Conference for Young Dentists in Dubai. During the ceremony the Dean’s award for academic excellence was presented in the name of Prof. Dr. Slavcho Davidov. Among the invited guests were the Minister of Education, the mayor of Varna, national representatives, the rector of the MU Varna other universities, as well as representative of medical and professional organizations.

Science , health, sport and music - an unexpectedly good combination in the Researchers’ Night To change public opinion and attitude towards scientists and to show their fun side “ science is what we scientists do in their spare time “ - this was the task at this year’s European Researchers’ Night 2013 MU Varna . Entitled: “Science , health, sport and music - an unexpectedly good combination ,” the night of scientists was held for the second consecutive year in the university .

The event was opened by the Vice Rector of career development, research and postgraduate educa Ǧ Ǥ Ǥ Ǥ ϐ dents and teachers had to face each other to check their knowledge of anatomy , physiology , chemistry and Ǥ ϐ the quiz . In the second part of the event, current and future scholars competed in several sports and musical disciplines , sending the message of the importance of movement and sport in everyday life - a prerequisite for a healthy mind and a healthy body. At the end of the evening all participants had the opportunity to experience the healing tea from the Bulgarian herbs elderberry and agrimony which was prepared by teachers from the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine and Nutrigenomics . According to a research study done in the department , some Bulgarian herbs have even greater antioxidant properties than the well-known green tea and honeybush . The relationship between health and food was also covered by other European research projects involving researchers from MU Varna . Other news Questions on human genetics

From the 10th to the 20th of October, in Bled, Slovenia, was held the 10th Balkan congress on human genetics and the 2nd Alpe Adria meeting on human genetics. Attendees from 16 European countries and company representatives from the USA discussed the most high-tech advances in molecular genetics connected with the next generation of genome sequencing, usage of exon sequencing in clinical practice, and the instruments to enable the usage genomics for the improvement of public health. Among the opening lectures was the presentation of Prof. Han Brunner from the Institute of Genetics in Nijmegen, Netherlands, on the topic of “How genomic sequencing is changing medicine” and the presentation of Prof. Gerd Mathias from the Center for Human Genetics of the university of Leuven Belgium on the topic “Diagnostics in the genome era – are we ready?”. A satellite symposium was also held on pharmacogenetics, on the subject of introducing the advances in pharmacogenomics to developing EU members. The congress was organized by the Slovenian Association of Medical Genetics.

“Educational standards and literacy in the natural sciencesâ€? was the theme at the 45th National Conference of teachers of chemistry, with international attendance, which was held in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, between the 25th and 27th of October. Within this event was also held the yearly conference of the Bulgarian association for chemistry education, history and philosophy of chemistry. The event was attended by close to 100 chemistry specialists. The main themes of the conference were: Current problems and tendencies in the normative documents for chemistry education; natural sciences literacy and education in chemistry in primary education; European perspectives on chemistry education in primary and secondary education. The department of chemistry of the Mu Varna was represented by Dr. Zlatina Peteva with a report on the theme “Increasing the interest in chemistry among students through context-oriented approaches in the English language program of the Medical university varnaâ€?. The three day forum was organized by the Ministry of Education and Â?‘™Ž‡†‰‡ǥ –Š‡ ‘Ď?‹ƒ Â?‹˜‡”sity “St. Kliment Ohridskiâ€? department of chemistry and pharmacy, the Union of Bulgarian Chemists, and the regional inspectorate of Education for Gabrovo.

Other news A new form of university admission exam in biology for medicine, dental medicine and pharmacy

The upcoming admission campaign for 20142015 in the MU Varna will see changes to the admission exam format in biology for medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy. Until now the biology exam was written, encompassing the material from the 8th, 9th and 10th class. In the upcoming exam the material from 8th grade will be in the form of a multiple choice test, covering a combination of questions on human anatomy. The combination of test questions will be decided on the day of the test, with the questions coming from the exam prep workbook which will be issued by the MU Varna. Campaign “Together in the fight against breast cancer” For the 28th consecutive year, humanity has marked October as the World “Fight breast cancer“ month. This month is not only dedicated to raise awareness, but also to provide information on how to help a patient diagnosed with breast cancer. Evening Enlighteners with Club brightest talents November 1st - Day of National Leaders is one of the brightest Bulgarian holidays. Like last year, the students prepared something special for the occasion. Radev “© arranged a poetic - musical and prosaic performance evening entitled “Enlighteners 2013”. On October 30, 2013 the audience once again was engulfed in the spirit of art and poetry! An insulin pump for the youngest diabetic patient in Bulgaria

With insulin pump therapy available for over 20 years in many countries, not just in the EU but worldwide, Bulgaria remains the only EU member state that does not reimburse any part of the treatment. An insulin pump is an apparatus for uninterrupted subcutaneous injection of fast acting insulin analogue with a speed determined by individual insulin needs. This type of treatment is becoming more and more popular and widespread as it most closely matches human physiology, especially when paired with a sensor that measure glucose levels and signals the pump to release as needed, resulting in near normoglycemia. On the 12th of November between 9:00 and 10:00 o’clock in the Pediatric clinic of the university hospital St. Marina in Varna, an insulin pump was placed on the youngest patient ever in Bulgaria, and 8 month old baby. The procedure was done by Prof. Violeta Iotova, head of the clinic. In Bulgaria, the number of diabetic children is around 1500, with 70 of those treated by insulin pumps bought and paid for by their families. Most of them are under 6 years old.

At the end of the month of September, students from the first class of the Sliven branch of the Mu varna held the first Freshman party. Part of the party was a pageant for “Miss Sliven Branch� organized by students, teachers, and administrators of the branch. All attendees were given bracelets, bought for charity by donors, including outside members from Hollywood bar, where the party was held. The pageant participants had to showcase not only their beauty, but their intellect, with the first task being a recital of any Bulgarian poem, which most participants performed flawlessly, reciting Botev, Yavorov, and Develyanov. The second task was a performance of a traditional Bulgarian folk dance, which did not slow down any of the contestants. The third task was for each contestant to give their opinion on what the collected donations should be used for. The jury’s selection was not easy, but despite this they determined the three favorites. Aisun Hasanova received the crown to thunderous applause, and she promised to wear it with care, and to hand it over to the next year’s winner. The runners-up were Danaya Stoyanova, and Julia Solakova.

“Blood Donation” Campaign 2013 On 7th of November 2013, between 10:00-15:00, the traditional “Blood Donation” campaign was conducted. It was organized by the Regional Centre for Haematology and Transfusion Varna, with the kind cooperation of the Student Union at Medical university of Varna. The campaign once again enjoyed great interest from the students of the University, evidence of which was the great number of well-wishers – 37 blood donors. It is important to note that participation in the campaign took students from the English-language courses. This year, like every other, Ist and IInd year students Ǥ ϐ Union literally was “seething” with life – drop after drop the cooperation between the two teams on RCHT – Varna and the representatives from the Student Union was accomplishing.

“Diabetes” Campaign 2013 This fall, Medical University of Varna carried out the annual “Diabetes” campaign, which took place on 14 of November, 2013 on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day. This was the sixth campaign organized by the Student Union, the Association of Medical Students in Varna, the Association of Dental Students – Varna, the Association of Pharmacy Students Varna and the Clinic of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University Hospital St. Marina Varna. A special program for the event was organised on November 13th (Wednesday) at 18.00 in Grand Mall Varna which included: - Practical module for those who have not participated in such a campaign, in which they learned “What is diabetes?” and “How to work with a glucometer and with a survey card”.

On the next day the suggestions for the usage of the donations were read to all students. “These funds were collected with a lot of heart, empathy, and generosity, which means that they have to be given to those who need exactly that. Most of us wish for things which most people can’t even think to afford, because or them there is something more important and precious, and that is health and real family. These children are more than we can imagine, and it is a fact that they exist. I won’t name a place or a person; for me the only place where these funds must be donated is “Those who are in need” and believe me they are not few!” These were the words of the second runner up of the pageant. The future nurses and midwives of the Branch voted as one to donate the collected sum to the “House for children in social need” in Sliven. After visiting the house and speaking with the director, it was decided to buy medicines which the house sorely needed. The organizers have decided to continue this tradition of donating proceeds to social causes for all future parties.

From the 30th October to the 3rd of November an international seminar in biomedicine was held in the medical university and the university hospital St. Marina in Varna. The seminar included representatives of the universities of Haifa, Berlin and Varna. During the forum a work session was held between the rector of the MU Varna Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov, and the consul of Israel N.P. Shaul Kamisa Raz, where aspects of the partnership between the MU Varna and partners from Israel were discussed. Present at the meeting was Prof. Dr. Krasimir Metodiev, head of the department of preclinical and clinical studies at the MU Varna and honorary consul of Israel in Bulgaria. On the 6th of November at 15:00 in the MU Varna, an educational workshop was held for the databases ScienceDirect and ǡ ϐ ject of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Knowledge. The university library was the organizer of the seminar on usage of the full-text ScienceDirect database and the largest bibliographical reference base SCOPUS. The workshop had practical exercises, mainly on searching for information in full-text format, informational points and functionality, citation of authors, h-index, and Journal Analyzer software.

Starting on the 5th of November, a preparatory course for international applicants wishing to study at the MU Varna will begin. This year representatives from Turkey, Greece, Moldova and Lebanon will do battle with the peculiarities of our language. In connection with the International day of medical physics, November 7th, a concurrent week of medical physics will be hosted in our seaside capitol. The series of events is organized by the Bulgarian union of biomedical physics and engineering with help from the Bulgarian nuclear union’s Varna branch, the MU Varna and the university hospital St. Marina. On November 7th, the birthday of Marie Curie, a lecture on the newest medical radiology instruments was held in the medical college Varna. In another lecture the topic of medical apparatus in the treatment of oncological diseases was discussed, as well as the newest physics methods and instruments used in medicine. For the highly interested students from upper courses, the 8th of November was an open house in the clinic of nuclear medicine, metabolite therapy and radiotherapy in St. Marina. Interactive tournament “Click`n`win” The 19th of November, 2013 was the ϐ Ǧ the Student Council called “Click’n’win” 2013 be ͳ͹ǣͲͲ ʹ͵ǣͲͲ ϐ ǯ Union the matches between the 6 teams that signed up for the Counter-strike 1.6 tournament were held. The matches were very interesting, proof of which was the large number of frags between the teams.

In connection to the partnership of the MU Varna with UNICEF Bulgaria on a project for construction of a “Center for maternal and pediatric health” in Shumen, experts from the university visited Great Britain ϐ learn about better practices in home health nursing. Between November 3rd and 10th, part of the team from the faculty of public health – Prof. Sonja Toncheva, coordinator; Assoc. Prof. Sylvia Borisova, Asst. Teodora Evtimova and Sevdzihan Yobova, clinical psychologist – met with the representative of the national healthcare service of Great Britain in South Yorkshire. Organizational structure, practice and competencies for home health nursing were all presented. Students and teachers in the specialty “Home Health Nursing” were also present. A meeting with the director of the specialists of healthcare with the Southwest trust for healthcare, Helen Lancaster, was also realized, at which the matter of Home health nursing in Bulgaria and Great Britain was discussed, as well as the possibility of future relations and exchanges of teachers and students within the ERASMUS program.

In connection with November 14th, world diabetes day, the department of eye diseases and ophthalmology and the specialized ophthalmology hospital SBOBAL Varna carried out a screening campaign of patients with diabetes for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes mellitus is an exceedingly large problem in today’s world. According to some studies the number of diabetics worldwide will increase by 50% by the year 2025, totaling over 300 million. The complications of diabetes are numerous and often affect the quality of life of a patient and manifest as social problems. One of them is the diabetic retinopathy; a leading cause of blindness in adult age in developed countries. It represents a microangiopathy, affecting the vessels of the retina. The main risk factors for the development of the condition are longstanding diabetes mellitus, poor glycemic control, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. After 15 years of diabetes Type 1, 75-95% of diabetics have retinopathy, and in Type 2 sufferers, the number is 60%.

International pulse party 2013 You like exotic dishes? And you love experimenting, trying the food and drinks from different countries? For second consecutive year, we gave our students the opportunity to try out dishes, specially made from the foreign students of the Medical University of Varna.

Two teachers from the MU Varna gave a report at the International school of oncology. The school was held between the 25th and 27th of October 2013 in the complex Rui Pravets. The forum was on the current tendencies in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors. Assoc. Prof. Dimitrov from the MU Varna presented on the topic of neurological aspects of diagnosis and differential diagnosis of CNS neoplasia, and Dr. R. Georgiev presented on MRI techniques for determining the stage and differentiation of gliomas. The educational program of the forum received the maximal accreditation score from the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Six of the lectors were among the foremost authorities in the European and worldwide neuro-oncology. They presented on the topics of epidemiology of brain ǡ ϐ ǡ cation of molecular biology in primary brain tumors in target based therapy, diagnostics, and modern aspects and expectations of immunotherapy in primary and metastatic brain tumors.

“Talk freely… about oral cancer” 2013 This year for a second time, the dental medicine students and ADMS Varna ( Association of Dental medicine Students) organized the tradition campaign on the occasion of the world day of oral cancer. The campaign was realized with the help of the Leadership of the Dental Medicine Faculty, the Student Council, AMS Varna ( Association of Medicine Students) and APS Varna(Association of Pharmacy Students).Last year the initiative was really successful, and this year the goal was to keep the tendency, even further develop it for the future. The catchword for this yearly campaign was “Talk freely… about oral cancer” On the 29th of November, 2013, Friday, from 12:00 until 17:00 o’clock in the Dental Medicine Faculty were undertaken free prophylactic examinations for oral cancer. Participators in the campaign gave away information brochures and Ȃ Ǥ ϐ Ȃ the Dental Medicine Faculty, the University hospital “St. Marina” and the University building, as well as some other public places around the city. The information brochures this year were also given away 2 days earlier before the actual prophylactic examinations(on the 27 and 28 of November at 10:30 o’clock).On the 29th information brochures were given in front of the Dental Medicine Faculty during the examinations. In the same day a lection module was held at the First Auditorium, ϐ ϐ Ǥ lection module were teachers from the Dental Medicine Faculty, where pharmacy students presented their own presentation on the thematic. Overseer of the campaign was associate professor Tsvetan Tonchev, PhD, Dean of the Dental Medicine Faculty. During this time the results were presented.

From the plant to the pharmacy shelf

Staff from the department of biochemistry, molecular medicine and nutrigenomics of the MU Varna took part in an international conference on the usage of natural products titled “From the plant to the pharmacy shelf”. It was held from the 3rd to the 6th of November 2013, in Bansko, and was attended by 230 specialists from 40 countries. They presented research results in phytochemistry, pharmacology and the application of medicinal plants in the prevention of cancer, diabetes and other diseases of social importance. To feed a population of 9 billion people, expected to be reality by the year 2050, the production of food will need increase by 70%. Scientists from the whole world discussed the past and future challenged and innovations connected with sustainable aquaculture. The MU Varna was represented by Prof. Mona Stancheva and Asst. Vesselina Panayotova from the department of chemistry. They presented research work on Dz ϐ ǡ ble Vitamins and Some Pigments in Black Sea Macroalgae” which was particularly interesting for many of the international attendees.

AMS Varna with a new President and Leadership On the 3rd of December, 2013, Tuesday , in the 2nd Auditorium of MU-Varna was held the Common report-election assembly of the Association of Medicine Students Varna, where 58 people were present, of which 50 had the power to vote. Before the election for new Leadership members, present members of the organization took the decision that there should be 2 Vice Presidents – one for the interior and one for the exterior affairs, and that the posts “Human Rights and Peace”, “Reproductive Health and AIDS” have two local representatives. Prof Dr. Georgi Klyochkov ( Department of Neurosurgery and ENT Diseases), and Dr. Assia Konsoluva (Department of Propaedeutic of Internal Diseases) gave a total of seven plenary lectures. ASDM Varna with a new Board of Directors On December 12th, 2013 at 18:30 in Auditorium “A� of the Faculty of Dental Medicine, the elections for a new Board of Directors of the Association of Students of Dental Medicine- Varna were held. Meeting began with an address by the Chairman of the Students’ Union Boris Andonov, who congratulated the new members of the Association. Then each of the candidates for the posts had the opportunity to present themselves and state the reasons for their desire to take their particular post.

The minister of healthcare Dr. Tanya Andreeva was in Varna on the 19th of November, 2013 for the opening of an angiographic laboratory, a center for rare diseases and a center for pulmonary hypertension in the university hospital St. Marina. Minister Andreeva visited the renovated clinic of endocrinology as well. The angiographic lab, built entirely with the hospital’s won funding, is made as a hybrid theater for interventional neurology, vascular surgery and interventional cardiology. The ability to quickly and precisely assess vascular brain diseases is a result of the new angiographic equipment from the latest generation, with which the lab was recently equipped. The software allows and analysis of aneurysms and virtual stenting, pre-invasive planning and treatment, and a 3D-integrated guide for interventional procedures. On November 29, in the university hospital St. Marina, doctors from Dobrich, Burgas, Stara Zagora and Pleven were taught how to place a glucose sensor on children with diabetes. According to Prof. Iotova, the head of the pediatric clinic, the combination of an insulin pump and a glucose sensor is the best current treatment for diabetes mellitus, especially in small children. Prof. Iotova is head of the team which previously had placed insulin pumps on the youngest diabetic patients in Bulgaria, the 1 year old Victoria and the 19 month old Stefani. The placement of the sensors and education of the doctors took place at 13:00 ‹Â? ”‘‘Â? ͡Ͳͳ ‘Â? –Š‡ ͡–Š Ď?Ž‘‘” of the hospital. The glucose sensors give an exceedingly accurate and clear picture on the daily blood glucose variations which simply cannot be matched by manual measurements using a glucometer. Charity Christmas Bazaar 2013 The Christmas and New Year holidays were approaching and this time is a favorite for everyone, a time for family gathering and warm evenings with your loved ones. But there are people who have nobody to share with some of the best and most beautiful holidays of the year . There are people who cannot feel the warmth of the family. For anyone who wanted the holiday to be lighter and give a glimmer of hope for someone in trouble, they could take part in the traditional Christmas Charity Bazaar organized by the students of the Medical University of Varna with the support of ASMB Varna and the Students’ Union . On 16.12.2013, Monday, at 09:00 until 14:00 at two stations – Medical University of Varna and University Hospital, “St. Marina “ trinkets and toys made by patients in the clinic of psychiatry at courses in occupational therapy were sold . All who visited the bazaar had the opportunity not only to share the Christmas spirit, but also to buy Christmas toys for a token amount of money. The funds raised were donated to the Clinic of Psychiatry, University Hospital “St. Marina�, which made possible the continuation of occupational therapy which is an important part of the healing process .

Christmas and New Year’s concert at MU-Varna Due to the Christmas and New Year’s concert organized by the “Club of bright talents : Dr. R. Zl. Radev and friends “™ ® © and supported by the Academic Board of the University with the cooperation of the Students’ Union and administrative departments, the ϐ ϐ spirit and many happy faces of students, children, lecturers and parents . Over 40 participants performed at the event, which took place on the 16th of December . Christmas music and bells, Christmas and New Year wishes and chocolates greeted guests in the auditorium. The clergyman Lyubomir Popov with his wise words made the moment even more special and intimate . After his blessing children’s music and poetry group “Star way” led by Silvana Valeva from primary school Dz dz ϐ Ǥ Nedev (3rd year, Laboratory assistant) disguised as the good Santa Claus, handed out gifts to all children. From that moment on the stage was conquered by the talents of MU Varna. Hardly anyone will forget the performance of “the voice of MU Varna” - Vesela Borisova’s (5th year, Pharmacy), the performance of Ave Maria by the infamous Rumyana Kirneva, participated in “The Voice of Bulgaria “, “My way” by the Bulgarian Frank Sintara – the second year medical student - Martin Stefanov. Among the performers at the “Talent Night” were new faces and talents discovered by the organizer of the event, Assoc. Prof. Radev. An additional dose of drama and humor was brought by two sketches that were played by a part of the theater university group “Infarktus “ - twins Roza and Monika Varbanovi and Tsvetalin Rusev- fourth course Medicine . Kalina Evlogieva (5th year, Pharmacy) presented her poems written specially for Christmas . At the end of the concert everybody sang “Silent night, holy night “ together in three languages - German, English and Bulgarian .

Other news The young doctors from the class of 2013 have graduated

One hundred and thirty four doctors in total received their diplomas in the graduation ceremony of the faculty of medicine of the MU Varna, which took place on November 30, 2013. The valedictorian of the class was Jeaneta Yaneva with a GPA of 5.96, and the total number of excellent students was 31, with two of them having a grade over 5.90. This is in comparison to last year’s class which has 104 doctors, 24 of which had a grade over 5.50, one of whom received the prize of the Golden Hippocrates. The rector of the university Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov reminded everyone that in the history of the university, from 1961 until today, the faculty of medicine has produced over 9000 doctors. “You gave us your vote of conϐ the best education in the medical university Varna. You tried hard, you followed the path set by your teachers and now you are knowledgeable and capable young doctors – the best! You are competitive with your colleagues in Western Europe, and for that the doors of their medical establishments are wide open to you.” – Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov

Who is the favorite teacher of the class of 2013?

ϐ in the history of the MU Varna, the award for favorite teacher was handed out during the graduation ceremony of the class of 2013 in human medicine, on Saturday November 30 at the festival and congress center Varna. A short while after, all graduates received their diplomas and the lights of the auditorium dimmed in anticipation of the surprise presentation. A few weeks beforehand the graduates had chosen their favorite teacher in a secret survery, which was initiated by the Dean of medicine Prof. Dr. Radoslav Radev. The announcement of the prizewinner was Oscar-worthy: “And so… the prize for “favorite teacher of the class of 2013” for the faculty of medicine… goes to… Dr. Peter Chankov, from the department of urological diseases, educational sector Urology!” In that moment all 134 graduates gave a standing ovation for Dr. Chankov, who took the stage to the tune of “I want to break free” ǡ ϐ ǡ a phenomenal resemblance to Freddie Mercury. But the 134 graduates hardly chose him as their favorite teacher for this reason!

A Very Merry Christmas Party 2013 The 8th of December has already passed, and the increasingly strong festive emotions were felt everywhere. The end of the semester was ap ǡ ϐ Ǥ ϐ ϐ ǡ party. It took place on December 16, at 23:00, at club Avenue. Festive mood was felt everywhere, the Christmas spirit was in every student. With lots of dancing, amusement and surprises they bid goodbye to the year of 2013, and once again showed that the students of the Medical University of Varna, in addition to knowing how to learn, they also know how to have fun!

In the second issue of the “Students’ life” newspaper we decided to ϐ Dz dz lishing some jokes and pictures a medical topics. In doing so we were able to show that students at Medical universities know how to have fun as well. Those of you who did the crosswords puzzle were able to see that by arranging the key letters in the correct order the name of the patron of our university- Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov, was formed.
