Welcome to our winter edition of 2017. Our thoughts towards the end of the year turn to the festive season. It is a wonderful time when families gather together, a time for nostalgia and sentiment. The occasional discussion might take place, perhaps uncovering another nugget of family history to be strategically placed amongst the others, dangling merrily from the metaphorical family tree. Christmas is a time for children and childhood memories too which weave their spell around so many at Christmas time. I can recall the sheer magic and delight when my father came bustling in the kitchen door with a giant bundle of green holly, bejewelled with bright red berries. The branches were placed over pictures and doorways as decorations in our home on Christmas Eve, marking the welcome arrival of Christmas. At dusk on Christmas Eve, a traditional candle was lit in the front window of every Irish home, to symbolise a welcome for Mary and Joseph as they sought refuge for the birth of baby Jesus. The eldest child in the family had the honour of lighting the candle, and I can remember having the privilege of such a prestigious task. You can read more about 'Christmas Traditions in the Irish Cottage' by Marion McGarry on pages 8 and 9. We enjoyed our three day stint at The Back to our Past Show (BTOP) in the RDS last October and a two day BTOP show will now take place for the first time in Belfast in February, see details on page 31. This promises to be a great event and is definitely one to mark on your 2018 calendar. Interest in DNA and how it relates to your family history is firmly on the increase; we feature two informative articles on this topic on pages 16 – 19 inclusive. A great big THANK YOU to all our readers, subscribers, contributors, advertisers and all who continue to help Irish Roots magazine to become such a success. We really appreciate your continued support and look forward to helping you achieve success with your family history research in the year ahead. With much gratitude, we wish you all the joys and goodwill of the season. Beannachtaí na Nollag oraibh go léir.
