Cardinal Stritch cage coaches pleased with season outlook Cardinal Stritch boys Coach: Jamie Kachmarik, fifth year (75-25) Last year: 23-2 (14-0 TAAC) Key players: Jordan Burton, 5-10, Sr., PG; Joey Holifield, 6-2, Jr., G; Little Anderson, 6-3, Sr., F; Ashton Caryer, 6-6, Sr., F; Nolan Finch, 6-7, Sr., F Preview: Junior guard Joey Holified returns after averaging 16.4 points and 5.2 rebounds a game last year, when he was voted the TAAC Player of the Year. “Joey has gotten bigger and stronger,” Kachmarik said. “He was a good outside shooter, but he has developed his shot even more. Right now he has 10 Division I offers, and he hasn’t started his junior year yet.” Senior point guard Jordan Burton averaged 14.8 points and 5.3 assists last season, earning first team All-TAAC and All-District 7 honors. “Jordan has thinned down and gotten quicker,” Kachmarik said. “He’s gotten leaner, but he’s stronger and quicker than he’s ever been, which has really helped his game.” Senior forward Little Anderson was a second-team All-TAAC and honorable mention all-district pick a year ago, when he averaged 11.1 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds. “He’s really worked on his outside shot and become a good outside shooter,” Kachmarik said. “As athletic as he is, he’s focused more on the defensive end as a help-side defender. He has a high motor and gives you everything he’s got every night.” The post will be manned by 6-6 senior Ashton Caryer and 6-7 senior Nolan Finch. Kachmarik said Caryer has signed to play at Tiffin University next fall. “He has a presence in the post and he’s extremely athletic,” Kachmarik said. “He can finish above the rim, and he put on strength in the weight room. He’s just more focused and he’s matured on the court. We’re excited for the year he can have. Nolan really runs the floor well. He has (shooting) touch inside and out, and he can really run for a big guy.”

from football and only played half a season. This is going to be a big year for him.” Kachmarik said the Cardinals’ demanding schedule should help them get ready for the postseason. Stritch will play in the Sonic Slam on Dec. 27-29 in Lebanon, Tenn., and at a Martin Luther King Day event in January, where it will play defending Division IV state champion Marion Local. “Our schedule is going to be tough,” Kachmarik said, “but our goal is to be as tough as we can possibly be in March. Every game, our goal is to get better.” (— Mark Griffin)

Coach: Brad Kuron, third year (24-21) Last Year: 7-16 (7-7 TAAC) Key Players: Hope Yost, 5-6, Jr., G; Taylor VanAtta, 5-7, Jr., F; Jamie Popkin, 5-8, Jr., F; Sammi Turner, 5-4, So., G Preview: Juniors Hope Yost, a guard, and forwards Taylor VanAtta and Jamie Popkin have the most experience. Vanatta led the team in rebounding last year with 6.3 per game. “She’s a rebounder and we’re teaching her to be more of a slasher,” Kuron said. “She’s really quick and has a great first step. We are working with her on the perimeter more so she has some room to work.” Kuron said the Cardinals will rely on Yost to pick up her scoring duties this season. “She’s going to have to continue to go inside and rebound and bring the ball up the floor,” he said. She’s never been asked

to be a scorer, but she will have to be one of those people.” Kuron said he hopes to get 10-12 points a game out of Yost, 8-10 points out of VanAtta and 6-8 out of both Popkin and sophomore guard Sammi Turner. “It’s going to be a collective (scoring) effort,” Kuron said. “If I can get 6-10 points off the bench, we’ll be OK. Jamie is our enforcer inside, our rebounder. She’s going to have to do a lot of dirty work inside and be our post presence. Sammi is probably our best 3-point shooter.” Kuron added that three other players were vying for the fifth starting spot: freshman guard Keera Garmon and sophomore guards Samantha Boraggina and Allison Fellman. “Keera is is a gritty defensive player,” the coach said. “She likes to get after people on the defensive end. Samantha is one of our better on-the-ball defenders, and we look for her to pick up the other team’s best ball handler and cause a lot of havoc. Allison is going to be a role player and get some starts or come off the bench. She can go inside and outside.” Kuron said he hopes to finish in the top four in the TAAC, behind favorite Toledo Christian, Ottawa Hills and Maumee Valley. “After that,” he said, “it’s a tossup. We’re looking at improving every day at practice and each night out. All I ask of them is to be the best they can be. If they give me a perfect effort, that’s all I can ask.” (— Mark Griffin)

Clay cagers face tough task competing in tough conference Clay boys Coach: David Rodriguez, second year Last Year: 6-17 (1-13, TRAC) Key Players: Jonah Kiss, 6-4, Jr., Derek Bolander, 6-1, Jr., Jake Novak, 6-3, Sr., Andrew Brown, 6-3, Sr., Noah Hagdohl, 6-3, So., Zion Wiggins, 6-0, Sr., Frank Waganfeald, 6-8, So; Sam Measel, 6-6, Jr.; Jaylon Cathers, 6-3, Sr.; Brodi Belinski, 6-2, Sr. Preview: Rodriguez, who was junior varsity coach at Bowsher for six years before coming to Clay last year, was part of the Rebels’ staff that won two Toledo City League championships. He’d like to bring that winning culture to Clay, but his team will have to do so without senior Reese Wamer, who tore his ACL in football. Last year, Wamer was the only point guard in the TRAC who led his team in every category — 14.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He averaged 2.6 steals and shot 48 percent from the field, 36 percent from behind the three point arc, and 79 percent from the charity stripe. Wamer was a second team Alan Miller Jewelers All-press selection, second team All-Three Rivers Athletic Conference and second team all-district. The Eagles will also have to replace guard Dustin Aiton, who graduated after earning honorable mention All-Press honors last year. With Wamer out for the year and Aiton gone, Rodriguez has just two letter winners returning — senior Jake Novak and sophomore Frank Waganfeald. Still, he has good size as Waganfeald stands 6-foot-8 and every key player is six feet or taller. Rodriguez says Jonah Kiss, Derek Bolander, Novak, Andrew Brown, Noah Hagdohl and Zion Wiggins “will be anchored by big Frank Waganfeald in the middle along with Sam Mease, Jaylon Cathers and Brock Belinski. Rodriguez names four “break-out players who can be instrumental in determining how well Clay does — Bolander, Kiss, Waganfeald and 5-10 junior guard Dorian Myers. “With the lack of experience we will grow as the year goes on, Rodriguez said. “We are a very young team that has a bunch

It will all start with the big man in the middle who has had a great summer and is expected to have a good year as a sophomore. With the inexperience at a lot of key positions there’s one guy who makes our team stick together and that’s Jake Novak. This senior has three years under his belt playing varsity basketball and has become one of the best leaders I have ever coached, “We have a very talented backcourt with Dorian Meyers, (senior) Cameron Aiton, (sophomore) Scott Woollard, and (sophomore) Keegan Calkins, but with all the talent we lack experience and that’s something we will have to build on game by game. For our forwards, they are a long and athletic group which may be the best part of our team. (— J. Patrick Eaken)

Coach: Corey Slovak, seventh year (73-65) Last Year: 9-15 (4-10, TRAC) Key Players: Kennedy Slovak, 5-8, Jr., G; Olivia Henneman-Dallape, 6-1, Jr., W; Tiffany Stevens, 5-8, Sr., G; Alivia Rew, 6-1, Jr., P Preview: Clay has three letter winners returning, including honorable mention AllThree Rivers Athletic Conference selection Kennedy Slovak and HM all-district selection Olivia Henneman-Dallape. Kennedy Slovak was also HM all-district and Henneman-Dallape earned HM honors on the Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press Team. Kennedy Slovak averaged seven points, five rebounds and five assists last year while Henneman-Dallape averaged six points and eight rebounds. “Kennedy Slovak and Tiffany Stevens will be critical for us in the backcourt, coach Slovak said. “They are both our best three-point shooting threats and we'll need them to handle pressure and minimize turnovers. “Slovak, (Tiffany) Stevens, and Henneman-Dallape will have to carry us in the scoring column each night. The three of them are our leading returning scorers from last year. They need to take advantage of clean shot chances every possession to help us minimize turnovers. HennemanDallape has expanded her game and is capable of knocking down some three-pointers.

In addition, Kennedy Slovak and Alivia Rew both stand 6-foot-1, which is “the most size on the court at the same time than I have had while coaching at Clay, Slovak said. Coach Slovak adds, “They will need to defend in the paint, block shots without fouling, and control defensive rebounds for us. Our defense will be the difference between us being competitive or not. Slovak led our team in steals last season, and Stevens and Faith Johnson are quick guards who will be tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best players. On the inside, Alivia Rew, Anna Rew and HennemanDallape will have to stay out of foul trouble and dominate on the boards if we are to be successful. The Clay coach hopes that some incoming players can help carry the load. “We are fortunate to have Brianna Pawlayczk come out for basketball, as she is Clay's top returning pitcher in softball. She has a great work ethic and attitude, and we think she will add some toughness for us, coach Slovak said. Coach Slovak says with the athletes he has, he doesn’t discount having an above average season if they can compete in a very high-powered league. “I hope we have kids that hate to lose, coach Slovak said. “We have three starters who played major roles in their soccer and volleyball teams winning TRAC championships. I hope they bring that winning attitude and culture into the basketball program. Our size and length will allow us to get creative on defense, and that will keep is in a lot games. (— J. Eastwood boys rebuilding; girls team looking to defend Eastwood boys Coach: Todd Henline, third year (110-48) Last Year: 18-7 overall (11-3 NBC) Key Players: Gavin Slattman, 6-2, Sr., W; Joel Stanley, 6-2, Sr., F; Noah Henline, 6-0, Jr., G; Jack Schling, 5-8, Jr., PG; Christian Peters, 6-3, Jr., W; Jake Halko, 6-2, Jr., G; Isaac Badenhop, 5-10, So., W Preview: The Eagles finished second behind Genoa in the Northern Buckeye Conference last year, but unfortunately more than 90 percent of Eastwood’s scoring has graduated. Henline said he was pleased with the team’s work ethic during the preseason. The Eagles scrimmaged Liberty Center, Warsaw River View and Hopewell-Loudon. “We’ve got a good group that plays well together,” Henline said. “We have good team chemistry. I like where we’re at. There are still some things to iron out, but we’re heading in the right direction. We’re competing well right now.” The Eagles graduated nine seniors, including leading scorer Tyler Haas (12.5 pts.). Three lettermen – senior wing Gavin Slattman, senior forward Joel Stanley, and junior guard Jake Halko (2.2 pts.), return. Stanley, who averaged 1.8 rebounds last year, is Eastwood’s top returning rebounder. “Gavin defends pretty well and he’s been shooting the ball a lot better,” Henline said. “He’s a hard-nosed kid. Joel can score a lot of different ways. He’s pretty athletic and versatile and can play a number of positions. Jake shoots the three pretty well and he’s a great offensive rebounder. He just has a nose for the ball.” Henline added that top candidates for other starting positions include junior guard Noah Henline, junior point guard Jack Schling, junior wing Christian Peters and sophomore guard Isaac Badenhop. “Noah has been handling the basketball pretty well, and he shoots it pretty well,” coach Henline said. “Noah and Schling are both point guards and have been on the floor at the same time. better than last year. She will do whatever it takes to get that done.” Schmeltz added that Abke, a three-year starter, is Eastwood’s “Swiss army knife.” “Sydnie does a little bit of everything and she’s good at it,” the coach said. “She can score and rebound, and she sees the floor and passes it really well. She’s one of our best communicators on the floor. It’s like having a coach out there.” Schmeltz said it was evident early that Haas was ready to play at the varsity level. “She has raw athleticism and talent, and she’s left handed,” Schmeltz said. “She comes from an athletic family and she’s been around the game and played a lot of basketball. She does some things on the court where I have to remind myself she’s only a freshman.” Eastwood’s other top players are senior guard Stacy Bienko and junior guard Rory Farmer. “Stacy knows her game is to play defense and fly around,” Schmeltz said. “She does a good job getting after it. We have her guard the other team’s best guards. She’s looking forward to a great senior year and going out with a lasting legacy. “Rory is solid across the board. She’s not going to do anything fancy, she’s just going to be solid with the ball and get us into our offense and make the right decisions. As a coach, she’s one of those girls I have a ton of trust in. She can take care of whatever her job is.” (— Mark Griffin)

hop both shoot the three pretty well, and Peters defends really well and rebounds well. Christian can guard inside and outside.” Henline added that seniors Nick Schuerman and Noah Hahn will see action in the post, and 6-foot-3 freshman Jacob Meyer “has been doing some nice things and it will be hard to keep him off the varsity squad.” “Spots are really wide open and it’s been pretty competitive,” Henline said. “It’s nice to get competition for playing time, and it’s worked to make us better.” (— Mark Griffin)

She was an honorable mention All-Ohio pick after leading the Eagles in scoring at 21.3 points per game. Junior guard Hannah Limes, a firstteam All-NBC guard last season, set a school record with 57 3-pointers last year. Genoa’s seniors counting on stellar year; girls rebuilding Genoa boys Coach: Zach Alt, fifth year (64-33) Last Year: 20-5 (13-1, NBC) Key Players: Jacob Plantz, Sr., G; Jacob Bradfield, Sr., G; Nate Lewis, Sr., W; Caleb McGeorge, Sr., W; Joey Dominique, Sr., W; Drew Bench, Sr., P Preview: One of the reasons for last year’s 20-win season and NBC title was 6-foot3 guard Jacob Plantz, who was the Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press Player of the year after averaging 20.7 points, including 12.6 points in the paint. For Plantz an Associated Press Division III third team AllOhioan, it was the second straight year he earned All-Press POY honors. Plantz, who has verbally committed to play at NCAA Division II Lake Erie College, also managed six rebounds, 2.5 assists, two deflections, 2.2 steals and shot 47.8 percent from the field, 26.6 percent from behind the three-point arc, and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe. His patented move is slashing to the basket, using his athleticism, size, and basketball savvy to create a score or find an open teammate. Plantz now returns for his senior season as one of seven letter winners for Alt’s Comets. That includes six seniors who want nothing more than to make an impact in Northwest Ohio. The Class of 2019 includes Plantz, guard Jacob Bradfield, wings Nathan Lewis, Caleb McGeorge and Joey Dominique and post Drew Bench. Alt says all six “have been putting time in for four years and they want it to pay off this year. “They all bring something different to the table, but first and foremost, they are asked to defend and rebound, and they do that. Some of them find their way to the rim and some stretch the floor for us shooting the basketball, Alt said. Plantz and Bench were first team AllNBC last year and Lewis honorable mention. As a junior, the 6-5 Bench was also All-Press first team after averaging 12.5 points, including 9.8 in the paint. Bench also contributed eight rebounds, one assist,

ing turnovers. “We will be defense-oriented with a focus on making every dribble, pass, and shot difficult, Alt said. The Comets will have to replace third team All-Press pick Josiah Bradfield, last year’s six-foot tall point guard. His senior season, he averaged 6.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.9 deflections, 2.9 steals and shot 39.6 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from the line. Noah Edwards, a 5-10 guard, also graduated after earning HM All-Press honors. Helping step up and replace that loss will be Mike Rightnowar, Rylen Stoner and Allen Laytart. (— J. attack the basket under control. “She is a very good all-around basketball player. She has good height and is athletic, Meyer said. Rylee Frederickson, a 5-7 junior, moves from guard to forward after averaging eight points and 6.4 rebounds, earning honorable mention All-Press honors. Meyer also calls Frederickson a “very athletic player who “can shoot from the outside and finish under the bucket. Also returning is junior guard Kendall Gerke, who Meyer says is “very fast and athletic. “She sees the floor well and is able to attack the basket and shoot from the outside. Meyer said. “She defends well without fouling. This kind of talent means that Meyer expects her team to play “fast paced but under control. We will run a lot of sets and look to run the floor, and she adds that she believes her team can excel playing manto-man defense. Another guard, Gina Goodman, “controls the game and sees the floor well. For a freshman, she has potential to be a great point guard. She controls the game and looks to pass the ball up the floor. Meyer’s biggest issue is she only has 12 girls who came out for basketball this year, and that includes the entire high school program — varsity and junior varsity. However, she says those who are playing bring a lot to the table. “As long as we can stay out of foul trouble and be injury free, we should be OK, Meyer said. (— J. Patrick Eaken)

Gibsonburg coaches say experienced athletes will prevail Gibsonburg boys Coach: Brent Liskai, 17th year (193-167) Last Year: 9-15 (5-9, TAAC) Key Players: Addison Weaver, 6-4, Sr., W; Jake Foster, 6-3, Jr., P; Theo Hernandez, 5-7, Jr., G; Mitchell Tille, 6-2, So., G; Mason Tille, 6-2, So., W; Austin Biddle, 5-8, Jr., G Preview: Weaver was an Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press second team selection after averaging 17.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. He was first team All-TAAC and first team all-district. “He’s a really explosive leaper and a tough match-up,” Liskai said. “He’s a lefty and there were nights when he got it going. He scored 30 against Toledo Christian, he scored 38 a couple times and 35 another night. He grew a lot over the season and we look forward to a lot more growth for his senior season. I look for him to develop even more.” Despite the “strong nucleus” returning, the Golden Bears graduated two key seniors in 6-3 wing Josh Ernsthausen and 6-2 wing Nate Kissell. Ernsthausen was second team All-Press last year and Kissell honorable mention. Ernsthausen averaged 14.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists while Kissell contributed 3.8 points and 7.7 rebounds. Gibsonburg’s other starters last year were forward Jake Foster and guard Mitch Tille, who return. Foster averaged 5.9 points per game and scored 16 against Elmwood and 15 against Stritch. “He had some ups and downs,” Liskai said, “but we think he’ll be able to score in the future. And, he’s a real nice athlete. Mitch did some real good things. Offensively, he has a big upside. He averaged 4.2 points a game, and as he continues to mature, he’s going to be a nice player down the road.” Guards Theo Hernandez and Austin Biddle were the first two players off the bench and were asked to harass opponents defensively. Mason Tille also saw time on the court. “We have some talent coming,” Liskai said. “I had to move some kids up (to var-

stretch during the regular season. Liskai’s young squad went 6-4 over its final 10 games and then posted a mild upset win over Lake, 69-60, in the first round of the D-III sectional tournament. “We were picked to finish fifth (in the TAAC) and we finished fifth,” Liskai said. “I have tremendous respect for all the (TAAC) coaches. I feel it’s the best smallschool league around, basketball-wise. Year in and year out, it’s rock solid and it’s been a good conference for us. (— J. Patrick Eaken/Mark Griffin)

foresee great things happening for Becca this season. The two of them worked hard in the off season playing together in AAU and the North Coast Fall league and I am so proud of them for that.” Jasmine McNett, at 6.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals, was HM All-District 7 and All-Press, and Karina Seem, at 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds, was HM All-District 7. Also returning is Mikela Simmons, who contributed 3.6 points and six rebounds, and Marissa Bruns, who averaged 1.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. “Jasmine McNett returns as a starter and led our team in rebounding and steals last year,” Hall said. “She reads things very well defensively. She anticipates and is very strong. “Karina Seem has always led by example, works hard and does all of the little things correctly. Marissa Bruns has worked very hard during the preseason, she is dominating the boards and working hard on her offensive game. Marissa has improved tremendously. She has been our leading rebounder in scrimmages and is working hard on post moves. “Mikey Simmons also is a great rebounder and will do anything that is asked of her. Delaney Seem has been working extremely hard in practice and we are really seeing good things from her.” Hall has several players who could play a key role in the paint. “Camren Krotzer, Sydney Busdeker and Katie Hovis will all play important minutes for us down low this season, they all have great size and are working hard on scoring and their strength,” Hall said. Lady Flyers say title within reach; boys set higher goals Lake boys Coach: Jeff Limes, third year (13-49) Last Year: 7-16 (4-10 NBC) Key Players: Joe Muetze, 6-4, Sr., P; Luke Walsh, 6-2, Sr., F; Christian Huntermark, 5-8, Sr., G; Matt Pindoley, 6-3, Sr., F; Aaron McKee, 6-3, Sr., F; Tyler Saffran, 5-9, So., PG Preview: Limes said the Flyers’ goal is to finish in the upper half of the Northern Buckeye Conference, but they will have to find a way to improve in late-game situations. “We played well in the first half last season and came out in the third quarter and kind of sat back,” Limes said. “It took us a long time to get going in the second half. We graduated Ahmad Smith (14.2 pts.) and Ben Stowers, but these kids will do anything. We’ve had some great practices from day one, and you can tell a difference.” Lake returns three starters and six lettermen from a year ago. Sophomore point guard Tyler Saffran moved into a starting role about halfway through last season. “I like his leadership on the court,” Lime said. “He does what a point guard is supposed to do. He calms things down when needed, and he doesn’t have to look to me for everything. He can score and pass, and he is good defensively.” The other two returning starters are Joe Muetze and Luke Walsh. Limes said the Flyers’ offense will go through Muetze. “Joe is one of those gentle giants,” Limes said. “He is very intelligent, fun to be around and a great kid to coach. He’s going to be our main focus this year. He’s a vocal leader on and off the court. Luke is a going to be a rebounder for us and a scorer. I may put him on somebody’s better offensive player, and he’s able to handle that. He’s one of those great kids to coach.” Senior guard Christian Huntermark lettered last year and will likely start this season, Limes said. “He can handle the ball or play the shooting guard spot,” the coach said. “He could be a scorer for us, and he handles the ball well and defends the ball well. He is

another team leader.” Lake’s other returning lettermen are senior forwards Aaron McKee and Matt Pindoley. “Aaron will probably come off the bench,” Limes said. “He’s very athletic, long, and he jumps well and shoots the ball well. He can really help us out on the defensive end. Matt will be one of our scorers. He has really been stepping things up and being aggressive at the basket. He’s tall and long and he will be a major part of what we want to do defensively.” (— Mark Griffin)

Key Players: Lexi Robinson, 6-0, Sr., W; Mya Staczek, 5-9, Sr., G; Kortney Ellison, 5-8, Jr., G; Colette Askins, 5-11, Jr., P; Hayley St. John, 5-11, Soph., F. Preview: The Flyers return their top two leading scorers in Lexi Robinson and Mya Staczek, who both averaged 13.1 points last season. Robinson earned second-team AllNBC honors despite missing eight games with a foot injury. “Lexi has high expectations for herself,” Nowak said. “Last year was not the year she had planned. She has really hit it hard in workouts and at different camps, and she’s looking for a really good year. Not just for herself, but to pull the team along with her.” Staczek, who averaged 20 points in the eight games that Robinson missed, was a first team all-conference and all-district se-

She made one 3-pointer two years ago, and last year she had 52.” Kortney Ellison suffered two concussions last season, forcing her to miss several games. Nowak, though, said Ellison “hasn’t backed off with her aggressiveness.” “She can shoot and she can drive,” Nowak said. “Through the summer and preseason, we really started to think back

on how we missed her for the second half of last season.” Colette Askins started in place of Ellison for 12 games last season, according to Nowak. The coach said Askins has worked hard to develop a shot from 15 feet. “She’s worked on that quite a bit in the offseason,” Nowak said. “She hustles and gets after it defensively. She takes joy in helping other people find opportunities to score, and she’s not afraid to shy away from her own opportunities.” Nowak said there was no set starting lineup heading into the season, and the lineup will probably “shift” during the course of the year. Sophomore Hayley St. John, a 5-foot11 forward, should help the Flyers under the boards. “Hayley has always been bigger than most of the girls she’s played with,” Nowak said. “She has developed more of an outside game and she’s attacking the basket. One of her biggest attributes is her ability to rebound.” Junior wing Karly Bekier and junior guards Natalie Bomyea and Kaitlyn Rayn will also see lots of action, Nowak said. “Karly can really shoot the ball when she’s confident in her shot,” he said. “Natalie spent two years at point guard at the jayvee level. There will certainly be times where she may have to handle the ball for us a little bit. Kaitlyn gets after it and has developed confidence to take shots when she’s open. She can give us a spark when we need it.” (— Mark Griffin)

Northwood cagers feeling like they are at a turning point Northwood boys Coach: Allen Drake, fourth year (3-66) Last Year: 2-21 (1-15, TAAC) Key Players: Demond Marks, 5-9, So, G; Jay Moten, 6-1, So, G; Logan Carroll, Sr., F; Donte Dixon, 6-0, Sr., F; Logan McDermott, 6-9, Jr., C Preview: Coach Allen Drake returns for his fourth season hoping to accumulate wins in an ever-improving Toledo Area Athletic Conference. He has seven letter winners to help him get the job done. Toward the end of last year, the team was showing the ability to compete with top level teams after getting a full season of varsity experience under their belt. Among the top returnees are guard Demond Marks, who averaged 15 points, three assists and three rebounds. Forward Donte Dixon averaged eight points, eight rebounds and three assists, plus he had one steal per game and shot 30 percent from the field and 62 percent from the charity stripe. Jay Moten returns to the backcourt after contributing nine points, forward Logan Carroll averaged five points and four rebounds, and the Rangers’ big man, 6-foot-9 Logan McDermott, averaged four points, six rebounds and two blocks and made a huge improvement in his foot game last year. Three returning letter winners received some kind of all-league or other accolades, including Dixon, Moten, and McDermott, who were Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press honorable mention selections. Dixon was HM All-TAAC. “Donte Dixon will be a force on the inside that will have the bulk of our rebounds as well as being the anchor to our defense,” Drake said. “Logan McDermott will lock down the paint for us. He has given us the ability to play a little more aggressive on the perimeter due to his shot blocking ability.” Drake has others who can contribute, which will provide the Rangers with more depth than in past years. “Donovan Brown, Demond Marks and Jay Moten bring a level of athleticism that will raise the level of play of our team to

Coach: Andrew Dickey, first year Last Year: 3-19 (0-14, TAAC) Key Players: Olivia Randall, 5-4, Sr., PG; Brooke Schmitz, 5-3, Sr., G; Corey Fry, 5-4, Sr., G; Kirsten Stacy, 5-6, So, F; Ashlyn Rable, 5-5, So., F; Emily Bowen, 5-7, So, PG Preview: Guard Olivia Randall, a District 7 honorable mention selection, is one of seven letter winners returning for first-year Northwood girls coach Andrew Dickey. Randall averaged 7.4 points, two rebounds and one assist per game as the Rangers’ leading scorer last year. She was also an HM Alan Miller Jewelers AllPress selection. She is joined by Kirsten Stacy, who was the leading rebounder last year with 7.3 per game, and also contributed 6.2 points and two deflections. Stacy says there is no way they are getting through this season without a Toledo Area Athletic Conference victory. "After four years of hard work we finally have the odds with our team. We didn't lose anyone and have such a strong team bond. We are coming out hot and ready this year and no one knows what is coming at them," Stacy said. Brooke Schmitz returns for her senior year after averaging one point, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals. As a freshman, Emily Bowen averaged two steals and one block per game and classmate Ashlyn Rable scored five points,

had 6.5 rebounds and one block per game last year. Rable was an All-Press HM pick a year ago. “We’re lucky to have four seniors returning to our guard positions,” Dickey said. “Olivia Randall, and Corey Fry will be bringing the ball down the floor. Corey sadly sat out with a fractured wrist last season but worked hard in the offseason to be ready to go this year. “Brooke Schimtz, (senior shooting guard) Lamai Fox, and Emily Bowen balance our attack and add depth to the defense. These young women are fast and intense on the defensive side of the ball. And Brooke and Emily have probably the best shooting form on the team.” Dickey says his team returns strong athletes at the wing positions, too. “We have some great experience back at forward with Kirsten Stacy and Ashlyn Rable. Both were crucial rebounders and scorers last year. In addition we have freshman Randi Wilson who’s been a great asset underneath the basket. Dickey is optimistic about his team’s chances this year. “We plan on playing team basketball,” Dickey said. “With our record last year and the unfortunate multiple injures we had last year I’m hoping that each of my players contributes this year. Most of the team came out this summer and hit the weights and made time in the gym to improve themselves.” Schmitz added, "We have the advantage going into every game because we aren't expected to win. We have been working hard every day, not only as a player but also as a team." (— J. Patrick Eaken)

Alexander, Schulte return to lead Rockets

Veteran coach takes the helm at Waite High

Coach: Eric Sweet, eighth year Last Year: 19-5 (9-3 SBC Bay) Key Players: Jac Alexander, 5-10, PG, Jr.; Clay Schulte, 5-11, W, Jr; Hunter Wilkins, 5-11, Sr., W; Connor Hoy, 6-1, Sr., W Preview: Last year was a banner season for the Oak Harbor Rockets. The team won 19 games, nearly claimed a league title and won its first sectional championship in nearly 20 years, losing to Carey in the district semifinals. However, this year Oak Harbor has lost six to graduation, three of whom were starters — 6-foot-3 wing/ post Aric McAtee, 6-5 wing/post Tate Smith and 6-1 wing Alex Gezo. Also lost to graduation were 6-3 forward Jacob Lewis, 5-10 forward Clark Rutledge and 6-1 center Hunter Lacer. The other two starters, 5-10 point guard Jac Alexander and 5-11 wing Clay Schulte, return to lead the Rockets. Alexander is a two-year starting point guard who earned honorable mention All-Ohio, first team AllSandusky Bay Conference and first team District 6 honors last year. Schulte is a twoyear starter. Two senior wings, Hunter Wilkins (511) and Connor Hoy (6-1), both of whom came off the bench last year to earn letters, are expected to play key roles this season. “We are going to be able to push the ball up the court because we have multiple players who can handle the ball. Time will tell, but we also have multiple players who can shoot the basketball, but we need to make those shots,” said Rockets coach Eric Sweet. “With us being small and having many guards, our dribble penetration should help us be aggressive. We will be small, but (our athleticism) will allow us to defend full court and switch a lot, thus creating pressure. “We need to get tough on the defensive end under the basket. We are not going to be the biggest team, so we will have to work extra hard at rebounding and defending the post.” Gage Brough, a 6-5 junior, will play in the post but also out on the perimeter because of his shooting abilities. His presence in the low post will be critical, especially on the defensive end. Four other players — Tyler May, Blake Booker, Colin Ish and Marcus Hartlage — will see action as well. May is a 5-11 guard/ wing who can provide athleticism and shooting, Booker is a 5-10 point guard who can score and handle the ball. Ish, a 6-0 forward, is an elite defender, and Hartlage, a 5-10 forward, is also known for his defense. Sweet sees Vermilion, which won the league last season, as one of the top teams in the Sandusky Bay Conference’s Bay Division. He also believes Huron and Margaretta will be in the mix. “Coming off a great year, this group of men are excited to continue the winning and they worked hard this offseason to make that happen,” said Sweet. “It’s a great group of players and we are excited for the upcoming season.” (— Yaneek Smith)

Coach: Darren White, first year Last Year: 8-14 (2-8, TCL) Key Players: Mark Randall, Sr., G; Alex Boose, Sr., G; Vinny Guerrero, Sr, G; Demond Allen, Jr., G; Corvaun Howard, Sr., G/F Preview: Three letter winners return for White in his first year at the helm, including 6-foot-2 Mark Randall, an honorable mention Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press selection as a junior after averaging 11 points and 2.4 rebounds. White says Randall has “the ability to create offense for himself as well as others, displays leadership on and off the court, and has the ability to stretch the floor with his three-point shooting.” Shooting is a common theme among White’s players. “Our biggest strength is shooting the ball. Our entire roster is built on players who can run and fill it up from deep,” White said. “Mark Randall and Demond Allen are a very lethal backcourt that can spread the floor with their shooting and make plays for teammates driving to the basket. Demond’s vision on the offensive end will help create a lot of shots for our team on offense.” The Indians will have to replace two lost to graduation — 6-2 senior post Dewayne Wells, who averaged 10.3 points and 7.5 rebounds, and 5-10 senior wing Dominique Booth, who averaged 12.4 points and 4.6 assists. Booth was a third team All-Press selection and Wells honorable mention. However, senior Alex Boose comes in as a “tough defensive guard with the ability to stretch the floor because of his shooting.” White adds, “Alex is coming off a successful football season, and we’re looking to build off of that success on the basketball court. He’s a first-year varsity player, but the toughness he brings on the football field is the same toughness he brings to the court.” Another senior, Corvaun Howard, is “very long and an athletic wing. He can defend multiple positions and creates mismatches on offense because of his slashing ability,” White said. In the paint, White says Tesean Lamonds is a “very physical around the basket. He rebounds at a very high rate on both ends.” Because of that athletic ability, White says he expects Waite to play uptempo at both ends of the floor. He expects the defensive play of Boose, Howard, and Vinny Guerrero will lead to points at the other end of the floor. “They are a very tough group that won’t back down from anybody. They have the ability to guard multiple positions and all will be very disciplined defenders,” White said. As far as his underclassmen, White sees Adrien Brown as someone who will bring something extra. “Adrien is a rising sophomore who will surprise a lot of people with his creativity and ability to shoot the ball,” White said. The team does not have a big guy who can dominate inside and rebound, which White says his team will have to make up for. (— J. Patrick Eaken)

Rockets look to win SBC Bay Division Coach: Tom Kontak, seventh year (116-32) Last Year: 19-5 (9-3 SBC Bay) Key Players: Logan Harris, 6-1, P, Sr.; Sophia Eli, 5-7, W, Jr. Preview: Oak Harbor just missed out on winning the league championship last year, but it did win another sectional title before falling to eventual Division II state champion Rogers in the district semifinals. The Rockets return one of the area’s top players in All-Ohioan Logan Harris, a

Logan Harris. (Press file photo by Harold Hamilton/HEHphotos.smugmug.com) 6-foot-1 senior post who has committed to play collegiately at the University of Findlay. Harris, the SBC Bay Division’s Most Outstanding Player last year, averaged 18.8 points and 8.8 rebounds. The other returning starting is Sophia Eli, a 5-6 junior guard, who averaged 10.7 points and 4.2 rebounds. Joining them is 5-3 senior guard Alaina Hetrick, who saw plenty of varsity action last year, 5-11 junior post Madison Glaser, 5-9 sophomore guard Auna Tack and twin freshmen Ryann and Riley Steinbrick, both of whom are 5-8. Coach Tom Kontak, who has accumulated a 116-32 (.784) record in six seasons at Oak Harbor, said, “This (team) will be a combination of talent and inexperience. We are excited to return Logan Harris and Sophia Eli. The remaining roster of contributing players, however, will take time to establish and develop. “The main strengths are being able to score in the post while also having players who can handle the ball on the perimeter. Another plus is having intelligent studentathletes both on and off the court. They have an above-average IQ sense for the game.” The team lost to graduation some players in 5-4 Abby Dornbusch, a four-year starter at point guard, and 5-9 wing Ashley Riley, one of the league’s best shooters. Emily Lenke, a 5-10 post, also played a key role on the team. Still, Kontak says he returns a talented team, but it lacks the collective varsity experience that many of Kontak’s previous teams had. He notes that communication, especially on the defensive end, will be key to the club’s success. “The biggest challenge for this group will be to collectively get comfortable talking and communication on the floor. If this team is going to maximize its talent, talking and communicating is a must,” he said. “Experiencing the speed and strength of high-level, high school basketball is a challenge for this year’s team, a challenge that early season play will develop. “As a program, we continue to strive to get better trying to figure it out. And that working-as-one on the court, we can become a team our fans and school are proud to watch compete.” In the season opener, despite 21 points from Sami Mikonowicz, the Rockets defeated a visiting Rossford squad 53-35 after falling behind 10-1 early in the game. Harris scored 14, Ryann Steinbrick scored 11 and Riley Steinbrick and Eli scored 10 points apiece. (— Yaneek Smith) 1 2 3 10 12 23 40

Coach May returns for 21st season Coach: Manny May, 21st year Last Year: 4-14 (2-8, TCL) Key Players: Jamareah Howell, 6-2, Sr., C; Mikayla Taylor, 5-9, Sr., G; Kelsey Ralph, 5-4, Sr., G; AnnMarie Juhasz, 5-7, Sr., G Preview: Last year, Waite had a young girls basketball team which missed out on the City League final four in Coach Manny May’s 20th season. This season, the Indians return four letter winners, all of them starters last year. After that, Coach May is still dealing with

Mark Randall. (Innovations Portrait Studio/InnovationsVisualImpact.com) plenty of young players. “We are very young and rebuilding each day in practice,” May said. “We just want to get better every day.” All four returnees, center Jamareah Howell and three guards, Mikayla Taylor, Kelsey Ralph, and AnnMarie Juhasz, are seniors, which should bring experience to his starting lineup, but after that many new players will be getting a fresh dose of varsity basketball. May says the 6-foot-2 Howell will give Waite a solid post presence, but the team will have to improve on its perimeter shooting, ball handling and handling defensive pressure. Howell averaged 7.9 points and 8.5 rebounds and Taylor averaged 5.7 points and 3.5 points in earning All-Press honorable mention honors last year. Ralph returns after averaging 2.5 points and 4.5 assists and Juhasz had 5.7 points and three steals. May sees his team finishing fifth in the six-team Toledo City League, and defending Division II state champion Rogers as the sure favorite. (— J. Patrick Eaken) 1 2 3 4 5 10 20 23 24 30 34 42 44 50

Coach: Aaron Clouse, fifth year (41-52) Last Year: 17-7 (8-6 NBC) Key Players: Drew Burner, 6-3, Sr., G; Logan Mierzejewski, 5-9, Sr., PG; Sam Barbee, 5-10, Sr., G; Hayden Heidebrink, 6-1, Sr., F; Aaron Sandrock, 6-0, So., G Preview: Coach Aaron Clouse has been asked this question quite a bit this offseason: How are you going to replace Mitchell Miller? Miller, who graduated last spring, led the Wildcats in scoring (19.7 ppg.) and hauled in 5.3 rebounds a game as the focal point of last year’s team. “The answer is, there really is no replacement for Mitchell,” Clouse said. “Not only the points, but he had a knack for closing out games and he handled the ball so well. His free-throw percentage was always around 80 percent, so we got it in his hands in order to close out games.” The “closer’s role” is likely to fall on senior guard Drew Burner, according to Clouse. Burner averaged around 17 points a game last season. “We’re looking for him to step up into that closing role,” Clouse said. “Mitchell was the primary guy last year, and Drew will be the primary focus with other defenses. Seeing how he handles that will be a big part of his game. He’s always been a really good shooter, and last year he developed into an all-around scorer. He’s fantastic in transition.” This year’s team returns six lettermen, and most of the squad consists of guards other than senior forward Hayden Heidebrink. “He really came on last year,” Clouse said. “He kind of emerged at the end of the year as a solid scorer. He’s probably our best interior defender. He’s really strong and uses his body very well.” Woodmore has other experienced players in senior guards Logan Mierzejewski and Sam Barbee; 6-foot sophomore guard Aaron Sandrock will play a big role this season.

He checks every box and does a little bit of everything. Logan brings a lot of energy. He’s our point guard and does a good job of setting people up. Just a high-energy guy who gives us a spark.” Clouse added that Barbee, who will be a three-year letterman, anchors the defense. “He guards the other team’s best scorer if it’s a perimeter guy,” Clouse said. “He does all the dirty work defensively. We put her on the other team’s best player and she is a really good shutdown defender.” The Wildcats had a good preseason, according to Clair. “I told the girls the other day (Nov. 20) that at this point right now we are a lot farther along than I’ve been in probably the last two or three years, as far as getting the defense were we want and the offense,” he said. “Our defensive pressure has been good and the kids are playing really hard. They are giving maximum effort.” Senior guard Katie Brugger, an honorable mention All-Northern Conference Buckeye pick last year, is Woodmore’s top outside shooter, according to Clair. “She’s our top 3-point threat,” he said. “We’ve been playing her in the post as well,

which has expanded her game a little bit and should increase her scoring. She’s getting some confidence on the perimeter.” The Wildcats’ other experienced players are last year’s starting point guard, junior Claire Rothert, sophomore guard Ava Beam and sophomore post Brooke Allen. “Claire is a quick point guard and she’s very aggressive attacking the basket,” Clair said. “She is another strong defender like Nora. She has improved her outside shot a little bit, and maybe we can get her to score a little bit from the perimeter. Ava is a potential starter and will share point guard duties with Claire. She’s a very intelligent player and she’s a good defender.” The six-foot tall Allen averaged 10 points a game last season en route to earning second-team All-NBC honors. “She’s going to be key for us,” Clair said. “A lot revolves around her, getting her touches. She has to produce and she can’t hide anymore. Last year she got the league’s attention and showed signs where she could do some damage. She didn’t finish well around the basket, so that’s definitely a key to what we want her to do.” Junior post Jordan Nighswander, who started about half of last season, led the team with 7.9 rebounds a game and will team with Allen to form a nice duo in the post. “They can do lot of damage with a highpost, low-post look,” Clair said. “Those two could have big years for us.” Clair added that his plan is to rotate 9-10 players during a game, including backups Greta Bauder, a sophomore guard, and senior guards Makayla Throop and Paige Schmeltz.
