(Press file photo by Lee Welch/FamilyPhotoGroup.com) going back to the I-formation and kind of doing some stuff that way. The league should be very fun this year.” Last year’s Lake team doubled its win total in the NBC from the previous season, and for the Flyers, winning is proving to be contagious as roster numbers are up. The Flyers return 21 lettermen but graduated their top offensive threat, Blake Osborn, who rushed for 1,107 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Coach Mark Emans, who has been a head coach for 33 years, has 60 players on the roster. “This is the biggest group I’ve had since I’ve been at Lake,” Emans said. “Our junior high kids weren’t real successful last year, but we got them out (as freshmen) and they were good in the weight room in the summer and we had great attendance. I’m excited about it. I think they want to be a part of this football program. The way we run things here, they want to be a part of it.” Woodmore coach Lou Bosh is in his third consecutive year as Woodmore’s head coach, but it is his 15th overall. This is his 28th year overall as a head football coach. This year, he’s got what he wants — 20 returning letter winners with only four lost to graduation and 41 on his roster, despite being one of the smaller schools in the NBC. Although he doesn’t see his team necessarily finishing in the upper division of the league, the challenge will be in trying to get there. At worst, he would like to see them improve on their seventh place finish, and believes an “overall strong work ethic” will eventually lead to bigger and better things. “We’re getting there,” Bosh said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re coming along OK. We started with a lot of
energy and have made some good progress. “We graduated three seniors last year, so with that most of the kids that are coming back have some playing time from last year at some point in time, which is good. But I’d say, even though we have like maybe six seniors, we’re still young this year.” Can Clay keep momentum going? Last year’s season-opening 41-0 win over Rogers gave Clay a much-needed boost, according to coach John Galyas, who returns 21 lettermen. “I definitely think it helped the kids buy in and believe what we were doing,” Galyas said. “To come out the first game and win that convincingly, we were a new staff but we were going to be OK. They really started to buy in.” The Eagles finished with a .500 record competing in the tough Three Rivers Athletic Conference, but they recorded a rare win (in overtime) against St. Francis De Sales and they beat St. John’s Jesuit for the first time in school history. “We had a pretty good offseason, springboarding off of last year,” Galyas said. “The weight room went really well and the summer workouts went well. Even our two-a-days, it’s been good. We had a pretty good scrimmage against Bowsher.” This year’s team features 56 players and includes returning quarterback Reese Wamer, who threw for 1,458 yards and 10 touchdowns and ran for 574 yards and seven scores a year ago. “It was his first year in our (spread) offense, and he had a really good year,” Galyas said. “He certainly matured into that field leader. This is his second year in the offense and he has a great handle on it. He looked sharp in seven-on-seven, and he has a command of the offense.”

We’ve been saying for years that high school athletes in the Eastern Maumee Bay community are just as good as the athletes in Auglaize and Mercer counties. The Midwest Athletic Conference has been garnering state football championships by the dozens, and it’s about time our schools do, too. Why not? Eastwood finally answered the call last year. While the Eagles came one last-minute touchdown short of winning a Division V state championship, they are state runnersup. Now, who from the 10 area schools will be next, or can Eastwood begin their own dynasty just like Coldwater, Minster, Versailles and other MAC schools have done? Eastwood coach Craig Rutherford said the younger players are “motivated and excited that it’s their turn to step up and be the next guy.” Eastwood has 59 players in grades 9-12. “Most of our guys play some other sports, so they’ve had some success in wrestling, basketball, baseball or track,” Rutherford said. “This is not their first time playing a varsity sport. We competed really well against Clyde in our scrimmage. They’re a strong program and a physical team and our guys didn’t back down. I liked what we saw. Our offensive line came off the ball hard, the backs ran really well and our defense flew to the football. If we clean up some technique things, we can be really good.” Eastwood has won three of the past four Northern Buckeye Conference titles. “We’re expecting to compete for a league championship,” Rutherford said. “That’s always our goal, and we’re going to do everything we can to be in these games. We plan on making sure we can run the football and stop the other team’s running attack. That’s been our plan for a long time, and it’s worked most years.” If Genoa wants to get past Eastwood and win the Northern Buckeye Conference, this might be their opportunity. The Comets have yet to win a league championship under Coach Paul Patterson. “Expectations are always to finish at the top of the league,” Patterson said. “We are in a league with outstanding coaches and players. You have to be prepared every week and you have to stay healthy. The league should have some good balance this year. “So far, it’s nice to have a veteran group — guys who have played together a little bit. We have a number of experienced players returning on both sides of the ball. I think our scrimmages have gone well so far. We have to stay healthy — that’s the No. 1 thing right now for us it’s about making sure we stay healthy. But I think our kids have played with good energy. We’ve played, in both scrimmages so far, good competition, so I’m really happy with where we are out right now. Depth, injuries are going to be tough to overcome.” The Comets return eight lettermen on offense and seven on defense, and the Eagles have graduated an incredible senior class, but by no means count Eastwood out. “We are definitely up towards the top of the league. I think we are definitely in contention,” Patterson said. “I mean, Otsego returns the offensive player of the year in Mitchell Downs and Eastwood returns Jaden Rayford, but they lost a lot. They are going to do what Eastwood does — they are going to be solid offensively and defensively. “I think Lake has a good player coming back in the (Luke) Walsh kid. Not a lot of people think about that — he’s a really good football player who missed a lot of last year. We saw them in a scrimmage, and he (Coach Mark Emans) does a great job with those kids. I think they are going to be in the mix a little bit and Rossford has an exciting quarterback over there. “I have heard Fostoria is happy with where they are at, too — I think they are
Galyas said the program had 49 freshmen come out for football. “We’re excited about our freshmen,” he said. “That’s the biggest group we’ve had in years. Our expectation this season is to compete every week. We know what our league is like. For the most part, last year we competed but a couple games got away from us. We want to compete better than we did last year.” In the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, the word is out that Northwood returns as the favorite. Cardinal Stritch coach Bryan Dudash is working to get his program there, but he’ll give you a rundown on what’s happening in the TAAC. Dudash believes going against similarsized schools in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference gives his team a shot of reaching his goal of seven or more wins. “It’s not a bad place to be and we’ve got some schools in there that we can compete against. You look at everybody besides Northwood and all their numbers are between 18 and 20 with Toledo Christian and a high of 32, like Edon,” Dudash said. “But then you have an outlier like Northwood that might have 55 or 56. But the rest of us have a good shot at competing week-in and week-out. “Northwood will be the class of the league, but will be pressured by Edon who is returning nearly 100 percent of their roster. Ottawa Hills under (coach) Chris Hardman will always be tough to play.” Stryker, a Buckeye Border Conference member that plays football in the TAAC, is putting a varsity football team on the field for the first time. Dudash says that doesn’t mean his team will take them for granted. “I’ve been around and when I was at Danbury we went against (Elyria) Open Door when they were just starting their program and they were very, very competitive and got better, and then they ran into numbers issues again,” Dudash said. In three years at Danbury, Dudash’s teams were 8-22. (On the following pages are ten 2018 high school football previews compiled by Press Sports Editor J. Cards set with strong group of skilled athletes Coach: Bryan Dudash, second year Last Year: 1-9 (1-5 TAAC) Outlook: Dudash believes this could be the year Cardinal Stritch turns the corner, if everything falls into place. “I think we could improve and be in the middle of the pack of the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. A few breaks and luck with injuries could put us near the top and pushing for a playoff spot,” Dudash said. “We have very athletic skilled players and our eager to prove to people we have improved. “I think our schedule is a lot more favorable, not having to face (former league foe) Gibsonburg and Colonel Crawford as a non-conference game,” Dudash continued. “That really helps us and some things are sort of laid out for us that way. It’s tough to say. I can see us getting seven wins and I can see us stumbling if we get the wrong guys hurt and unfortunately we end up like last year. “We look good, but we don’t have a lot of depth with the numbers that we have. We have some really nice skill guys. Our front level offensive and defensive line guys are pretty solid, but we have to stay healthy. We have an overall lack of depth with a roster of 26 and one of those players is out until mid-season.” Leading the way for Stritch is senior Paul Latz, who was second team All-TAAC and honorable mention Northwest District at both wide receiver and defensive back. “He was all over. His numbers would have been higher, but we used him at quarterback, we used him at running back and we used him at receiver,” Dudash said. “If I would have to just put down his passing numbers, close to 500 yards and a couple touchdowns, it doesn’t jump off the stat page until you combine them all together. He did a lot for us.” Latz caught 41 passes for 460 yards (11.2 per catch) and two touchdowns. He also ran for 308 yards on 63 carries (4.9) and one TD and at the quarterback position, completed 26 of 48 passes (54.2 percent) for 377 yards and three TDs. Dudash says Latz is getting some interest from NCAA
Division II and D-III schools. “He is one of the quickest and fastest players in the TAAC. He has the possibility to be one of the most dynamic players

his size and natural strength. He will be our main puller on the offensive line,” Dudash said. “Nick Mossing’s work in the off-season has made him a precise offensive lineman — a technician at the position. Nick worked extremely hard in the off-season, having a 96 percent attendance rate in the weight room and our speed and agility work. Nathan Hill has very good feet from running track and will be a force on the offensive line. Track really improved Nathan Hill’s conditioning and quickness.” “On defense, Noah Power’s natural strength and quick feet make him very difficult to block. Hunter Crippin is a student of the game. He always puts himself and his teammates in the proper alignment. Caleb Evans’ outstanding off-season work has improved his feet and overall strength. (Cornerback) Dominick Woodby is very tall for a CB and extremely quick. He should be a shut down CB.” Besides Foust, two other incoming first-year players are expected to play major roles, too. “Dylan Fischer and Thomas Foust are incoming freshmen and are natural football players — very driven for success. Chris Lucio is a first-year player who is very strong and quick. He will be a contributor on defense and special teams.”

the TAAC has seen for quite some time,” Dudash said. Joining Latz will be junior wide receiver Ben Dunsmore, who caught seven passes for 79 yards and two TDs. Dudash says Dunsmore is an “excellent route runner with very good hands.” Dunsmore will play free safety and Latz, who had 84 tackles and three interceptions, will play strong safety on defense. “His nose for football always puts him in position to make big plays,” Dudash said about Latz’s defensive play. At the quarterback position, Dudash has two players competing for the starting job. One of them, freshman Thomas Foust, will also play defensive back. “I’ve got a freshman (Foust) who has come in that is pretty good,” Dudash said. “We’ll see if he can swing it and get used to the speed of a high school game. We just got a transfer in from St. Francis, so they are having a little battle to see who wins the job. (Foust) has a very strong and accurate arm. He is a true student of the game, working hard to learn all of the intricacies of the new offense.” At the running back positions are freshman Dylan Fischer and junior Romilio Duran, who will both play linebacker on defense. Dudash says Fischer is a “very strong and instinctive runner” who is “not shy about making contact,” while Garcia “is quick and has the speed to get outside.” Also returning are second team AllTAAC linebacker and honorable mention NW District senior Hunter Crippin, who will play wide receiver on offense. “He is an excellent blocker and catcher of the football. He is a coach’s dream — very consistent in everything he does,” Dudash said. From his linebacker position, Crippin had 104 tackles and two sacks last year. Senior nose guard Noah Power was a second team All-TAAC and HM NW District defensive lineman after garnering 30½ tackles, including 1½ sacks and a fumble recovery. Junior center Gustavo Torres was an HM All-TAAC lineman. Other key two-way linemen are juniors Nick Mossing, Caleb Evans and Nathan Hill. “Noah Power has very quick feet for

After 5-win season, Clay wants to take next step Coach: John Galyas, second year. Last year: 5-5 (3-4 TRAC). Outlook: Joining returning quarterback Reese Wamer in the backfield are tailback Kyle Miller and H-backs Cam Aiton, Josh Nagy and Adam Ummel. Miller ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns on 61 carries last season. Nagy is also listed as a tight end. “They’re all seniors and that’s really nice,” Galyas said. “They’ve played a lot of football for us. Nagy and Ummel have started since their sophomore year, so those guys have tons of experience and athleticism. This is our most athletic team at the skill positions that we’ve had in a long time.” Senior Trey Reddick, who caught 57 passes for 709 yards and five touchdowns last year, earned first-team all-conference honors and was an honorable mention All-Ohio pick in Division II. “It definitely starts with him and his speed,” Galyas said. “There’s no doubt that Trey has some speed, but his work ethic and commitment have been incredible this offseason. He’s really stepped up his effort. He’s quiet and he leads by example.” Jake Novak will also play receiver along with Aiton, Ummel and fellow senior Emilio Rendon. “Jake has really stepped up his leadership and mentoring role,” Galyas said. “He’s taken some young guys under his wing and letting them know this is what it takes to be successful. Emilio is another hard-working kid. You wish you had 20 Emilios.” The line consists of senior tackle Jaylon Cathers and junior tackle Ben Richmond, senior guard Malec Jomaa and junior guard Payton Hendricks, and junior center Tyler Strasbourg. Jomaa and Cathers are returning starters. “Our offensive line is one of our most inexperienced position groups,” Galyas said. “They didn’t look bad against Bowsher, but you always have things to work on.” Ruger Wamer, a junior, follows Thomas Cluckey as the Eagles’ kicker. Cluckey, who
Returning quarterback Reese Wamer looks to run as the now-graduated back Walker Bliss (24) looks on. (Press file photo by Russ Lytle/Facebook.com/RussLytle/RHP) is now at the University of Toledo, booted the game-winning field goal in OT against St. Francis. He also kicked a school-record 50-yarder in the win over St. John’s. The Eagles’ 3-4 defense will rotate “a ton” of linemen on and off the field, Galyas said. The starting tackles are Nagy and Cathers, and senior Jared Rivera will start at nose tackle. Strasbourg will also see time on the line along with Jomaa, Hendricks and juniors John Hansen, Tyler Reese and Kyle Sigler. Clay graduated all four starting linebackers last year. Stepping into their positions are senior A.J. Szgeti, junior Ty Szymczak and brothers Kyle Miller, a se-
nior, and junior Kameron Miller. “A.J. played a little bit for us,” Galyas said. “He played special teams, same as Kameron. It’s been nice to see that group improve over the summer. They’ve come a long way. To watch the growth of our linebackers and our O-line, those are our two most inexperienced groups. We also have some sophomore linebackers who will play some.” Ummel and Rendon are the starting cornerbacks, and Novak will play there as well. The safeties will be a combination of Reddick, Aiton and seniors Lucas Roach and Caleb Meinke. Ummel returned two interceptions for touchdowns last season.

Eastwood expects to be back in the fold, again Coach: Craig Rutherford, second season Last year: 14-1 (7-0 NBC). Outlook: After the graduation of a standout senior class, defending Division V state runner-up Eastwood returns 11 lettermen, including two starters on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The Eagles will start a senior quarterback in Gavin Slattman, who started all 15 games at defensive back last year. “He’s a real athletic kid,” Rutherford said. “He played varsity basketball and baseball, so he’s been a part of successful programs. He can throw the deep ball really well and he’s smart. He doesn’t force a lot of things.” Junior fullback Jaden Rayford returns after rushing for 2,205 yards on 352 carries (6.3 per carry) and 35 touchdown as a sophomore, earning first team AllNorthern Buckeye Conference and third team All-Ohio honors last fall. His yards per carry includes five games against quality opposition in last year's playoffs. “He’s faster than he was a year ago,” Rutherford said. “He sets the pace for us on offense. He’s become a leader. The last couple years he’s been the young guy, but now he’s got the experience. That’s a new role for him and we’ve been happy the way he’s taken on that role.” Senior halfback Ceyleon Damron started the last seven games last year “and came up with some big touchdowns in the playoffs,” Rutherford said. Junior Justin Pickerel will also play halfback. Pickerel started against Maumee last season and rushed for 180 yards. Eastwood’s top two receivers/ends are senior Brody Patterson, who played a lot last season, and sophomore Austin Fry. The offensive line includes junior tackles Austen Nissen and Hunter McClish and senior Brad Keyes, junior guard Austin Kieper, sophomore guard Blake Landis and senior guard Reid Buchman, who started the state championship game due to an injury. Sophomore Max Buchman is the center. “Reid Buchman is the only one with

Max is everything we’re looking for in a center. He’s just a young guy, but we’re trying to get all of them as many quality reps we can in practice. It’s on us as coaches to get those guys in the best possible position for them.” The defensive line consists of Patterson, Reid Buchman and Kieper, who will rotate inside, and ends Jack Arman, a senior, and sophomore Gage Might. “We think we have some speed up front,” Rutherford said, “and they’re big and strong enough to handle everything we want to do. They like to hit, so it will be fun watching them get to the ball.”

Pickerel and Damron return at inside linebacker, while the outside linebacker rotation will include juniors Paul Smith, Mason Glaze and Noah Henline. “There’s not much experience, but you can tell those guys like to play defense,” Rutherford said. “They just have fun running to the football.” Slattman returns at cornerback and will be joined at that position by either junior Griffin Coffield or sophomores Heath Hagg and Isaac Badenhop. “Gavin’s obviously going to be a leader back there, with the experience he has,” Rutherford said. “A lot of times he’s covering the opposing team’s best receiver.” Rayford, who has never played on the varsity defense, is the starting safety.

Comets return a number of key playmakers Coach: Paul Patterson, fifth year (28-15) Last Year: 8-3 (5-2 NBC) Outlook: Genoa’s strength is definitely in its skilled positions, and it starts with 6-foot-3, 205 pound senior quarterback/defensive back Jacob Plantz. Last year, he played in just four games, getting hurt in the fifth game at Lake Community Stadium. He completed 28 of 46 passes for 503 yards and five touchdowns, plus ran for 98 yards on 12 carries and one TD. Despite being hurt, he still earned second team All-NBC at defensive back, due in part to his three interceptions, 15 tackles, three tackles for loss, and three pass breakups in limited playing time. However, his sophomore year at QB he completed 53 of 97 passes (54.6 percent) for 973 yards and nine TDS. Now in his fourth year as starting quarterback, he has shown the ability each year to make better and better decisions, improving on his ability to not throw interceptions. “He is a great high school athlete. You look at last year, in the four games he played before he got hurt, he had no interceptions. It (the injury) was just a freak thing and fortunately it wasn’t as bad as what they first thought it was. He still played and threw a big ball after that. He’s definitely a kid who has gotten bigger and stronger. He’s a heck of an athlete for us,” Patterson said. Joining Plantz is his buddy and cohort, 6-foot-5, 225 pound senior tight end/linebacker Drew Bench, and Bench is joined by two other skilled players who bring plenty of size to the table — 6-1, 210 senior TE/ defensive end Nathan Lewis and 6-1, 235 junior running back/linebacker Daniel Novotney. “Drew Bench, another kid who has played four years for us, is coming back,” Patterson said. “We have two really good tight ends. It’s not many times you hear high school coaches talk about tight ends. Nate Lewis is our other tight end — both of those kids are really good, so we have that and Dave Novotney returning in the back-

field — big, strong kids. We definitely have some good skilled kids. We definitely have some weapons.” Bench (10 receptions for 208 yards, two TDs) was a third team All-Ohio, first team Northwest District and two-time first team All-NBC linebacker (led team last year with 82 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, five sacks, one interception, four pass break-ups, one blocked punt). Patterson says he is not just an athlete, but a “playmaker.” He has had offers from Bowling Green, Ball State, Air Force and Ohio Dominican. Lewis and Novotney are both two-year starters on offense and defense. Lewis was first team All-NBC at defensive end (56 tackles, nine TFL, four sacks, one forced fumble, two pass break-ups, one blocked punt, and two blocked punt TDs) and at tight end (nine receptions for 153 yards). Novotney, who will move from a blocking role to carrying the ball, was second team All-NBC at linebacker (third on team with 68 tackles, nine TFL, three sacks, one fumble recovery and one interception) and at running back (35 carries for 192 yards, four receptions for 83 yards and four touchdowns). Patterson says he is a “consistent performer.” Also returning at skilled positions are 6-0, 170 pound senior running back Jacob Bradfield, a three-year starter on defense, 5-11, 170 senior QB/DB Caleb McGeorge, who started seven games at QB last year. Quarterback and defensive back Rylen Stoner is returning after a year off and Patterson says he “should impact both sides.” Returning honorable mention AllOhio, first team Northwest District kicker and first team All-NBC specialist Sam Witt is also a 5-11, 205 pound junior running back and linebacker. He connected on 59 of 59 conversion kicks, made 4-of-4 field goals, kicked four touchbacks, and averaged 35.8 yards per punt. The line is a bit of a question mark, but not enough to worry Patterson too much. Top linemen include Justin Shaffer, Daniel Baker, Corwin Barry and Daniel Baker. Patterson says Daniel Baker is a “hard worker in the weight room” with a “great motor” who looks to be on his most im-

proved players. “We have three kids who started technically for us last year — we are returning two guards and our center,” Patterson said. “So, we’re kind of looking to fill one of our tackle spots. We might maneuver one of our kids who started at guard to tackle. That’s still a work in progress. But, so far the kids have done a great job up front in both of those scrimmages.”

New coach, new conference, same expectations Coach: Mike Lee, first year Last Year: 9-2 (6-0 TAAC) Outlook: Gibsonburg switched coaches and conferences during the offseason, but the expectations remain the same. Picked to finish second in the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division, the Golden Bears should challenge for yet another league title this season. Mike Lee, who coached at Clay and Woodmore, takes over at Gibsonburg. He is implementing a new offense, the Wing-T, though the club will still employ some of the spread concepts that were used under Steve Reser. “In a short period of time, the kids have picked up all the new things we’re putting in. Last year, (the team) was all spread, now we’re adding to that and making it a little more sophisticated. We’re also throwing in the Wing-T and a new defense. It’s been quite a threeweek run. “I’m very pleased with the coaching staff. Everybody is cooperating very well. The kids performed very well (in scrimmages) against a good Seneca East team and a good Hopewell-Loudon team.” Addison Weaver is the quarterback, and he will be joined by Jon Auld, Brad Mendoza and Brady Jaso in the backfield with Theo Hernandez seeing plenty of action, too. The offensive line consists of Eric Schlea (5-7, 225) at center with Nick Hade (6-0, 191) and Hunter Smith (5-10, 210) as the guards and Jake Foster (6-2, 208) and Andrew Farris (6-4, 333) anchoring the line at the tackle spots. Andrew Milton and Mason Tille will both play tight end and Jessie Arriaga is the split end. Lee says the new offense has its advantages. “One of the things that we’re going to do is ball control. The bottom line is you’ve got to run the ball in late October and November. When the snow starts to come, you’re not always going to be able to throw the ball around. We’ll mix in the spread.
Gibsonburg wingback Jon Auld running around the right side in a key conference game at Montpelier last year. (Press file photo by Jeff Holcomb) We’ll use some play-action passing off that as well.” The base defense is a 4-4, though Lee notes that they’ll switch to a 4-3 at times and employ some odd fronts, too. The defensive line consists of Farris, Foster, Trey Kasman and Tayven Halbisen. Smith and Mendoza are the inside linebackers with Jaso and Auld flanking them. Arriaga and Hernandez are the cornerbacks and Weaver is the free safety. “I will say that the whole group has stepped up, especially some of the younger kids that are learning faster. When you’re a starter, you’re doing things, but I’m really pleased with the backups — they’re pulling in that gap from being a (first-stringer) to a (second-stringer).”

After the old Suburban Lakes League folded in 2011, Gibsonburg moved to the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, where it had plenty of success. The Bears won three consecutive league titles to finish off its run in the TAAC. Now, after seven years in the TAAC, Gibsonburg moved to the SBC River Division, where it’s in closer proximity to the other schools. The Bears will play old Suburban Lakes League foes in Elmwood and Woodmore in the non-conference, as well as Mohawk before facing Tiffin Calvert, Danbury, Lakota, Sandusky St. Mary, Margaretta, Fremont St. Joseph and Willard in the conference. “The biggest thing is I’m new, and it’s (a) new (schedule) for the kids. are there from last year. We picked up Mohawk, Margaretta and Willard, those are some strong football programs,” said Lee. “They might have been down the last few years, but they’re coming back. “I’m always optimistic. Right now I’d say I’m cautiously optimistic. We’re staying away from the major injury bug, but that can hurt a small school like us. We’ve got some high goals.” Under Reser, the last three seasons have seen the Bears accumulate a 27-6 record and get to the playoffs three times while winning two Toledo Area Athletic Conference titles. Last year, Gibsonburg went 9-2, which followed a three-year record of 27-5. That was the beginning of the ascension of the program, which went 14-16 in the previous three seasons and followed an 0-10 campaign in 2010 in the Bears' final year in the Suburban Lakes League.
