50 Years (1968-2018)

The 2017-2018 school year marks the 50th in existence for Woodmore. It may appear to be one year short, but I promise you this year is the 50th.

We enlisted the help of a number of terrific people from both communities to assist with this project. We have worked hard to include as many items as possible, and we have attempted to be equal to both Elmore and Woodville.

We are bound by space, cost and available resources, and as a result not everything is able to be included. We have searched through yearbooks, newspaper clippings, historical articles and documents. More of this magazine features the high school level for several reasons, one being available historical resources. If you locate a mistake, if something is misspelled, mislabeled or omitted, it is an honest mistake; and we apologize in advance.

Through the decades, nearly 5,000 men and women have graduated from WHS. This publication was comprised to commemorate those who have had a part in shaping our school district through the decades.

A school district is made up of many parts. Through numerous conversations, we decided to highlight notable people, achivements, history and happenings over the last half century at Woodmore Local Schools.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR FINALISTS AND WINNER Beginning more than 60 years ago in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes and awards scholarships to the highest achieving students from across the country. In 2017, approximately 1.6 millions students took part in the PSAT examination. Of those, 50,000 (3.3%) were named “Commended Scholars.” The semifinalists were narrowed to the top 16,000 students (the best 1.1%). Finally, approximately 7,500 individuals were named “National Merit Scholars.” As you can see, this program -- based out of Evanston, Illinois -- represents the very best from across the United States of America on a yearly basis. We feel very fortunate to have five finalists and a National Merit Scholar through the first 49 years of Woodmore Schools.

Give us another 50 laps! Happy Anniversary! —Woodmore Athletic Boosters

NFL VETERAN JON GIESLER By J. Patrick Eaken and Yaneek Smith Suburban Press Sports Today, Woodmore legend Jon Giesler lives in Jupiter, Florida, but Woodville will always be his home. So much so the former National Football League star wants more than anything to say “Happy 50th Woodmore” and “Go Wildcats” when he heard the half-century celebration was on. “Congratulations to Woodmore High School on 50 years of excellence,” Giesler said. “I am grateful for the time I spent there and the administrators and coaches that helped groom me into what I am today. “One coach in particular gave me great inspiration during my high school days. Coach James Smithey was a great teacher and leader both in the classroom and on the athletic field. He taught me the meaning of hard work and how to be a champion. He told me that championships aren't won on the field but in the hundreds of hours of training. Thanks so much to coach Smithey. He will never be forgotten.” In December 2015, the Miami Dolphins’ great, who played at the University of Michigan for legendary coach Bo Schembechler, returned to Woodmore High School to present a golden football to the school as part of the NFL’s Super Bowl High School Honor Roll program to promote the 50th Super Bowl. The ceremony occurred on Nov. 27, and Giesler gave a short speech talking about his experience as a professional football player, a career that saw him play in two Super Bowls — XVII and XIV — both with the Dolphins. “I just wanted to say this football right here really represents a lot to me. I dreamed of this as a kid to play in what I think is the best sporting event in the world, and that is the Super Bowl. It took a lot of hard work, a lot of determination, but I was able to realize that dream,” said Giesler. “I was fortunate enough to play in Super Bowl XVII a long time ago, and believe me, I feel it every day. But the real reason I’m here is to present this football to Woodmore High School, where my dream became a reality.”

Giesler won the state title in the shot put in 1974 and still holds the school record for both shot and disc.

At Woodmore, he not only led the football team, but also won the state championship in the shot put. The 1975 graduate played at Michigan for four seasons before being drafted by Miami in the first round as the 24th overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft. During his time in Ann Arbor, Giesler played defensive tackle before switching to left tackle on the offensive line. Giesler earned All-Big Ten honors during his senior season, and during his four-year stint the Wolverines went 38-8-2, won three conference championships and played in three Rose Bowls and the Orange Bowl. During his time with the Dolphins, he protected the blind side of two Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Bob Griese and Dan Marino, and helped his club win the American Football Conference title twice in a threeyear span (1982, 1984). Perhaps the high point of Giesler’s career came in 1984 when he helped lead one of the best offensive lines in football in a season that saw Marino set single-season passing records for yards (5,084), touchdowns (48) and 300-yard games (nine). Giesler takes pride in playing for Shula, the NFL's all-time winningest coach, and Schembechler, both of whom were born and bred in Ohio. "I think they were both out of the same mold," Giesler said. "Bo was tough as nails and Shula demanded the best. I played in two Super Bowls. They were great, but there is something you cherish about the (Ohio State-Michigan) rivalry. I played in the Ten-Year War with Woody and Bo. It's the greatest rivalry in college football and all of sports. I think it's going to get back to being where they compete for the Big 10 title nearly every year." According to Tom Deitemyer, who played tight end alongside Giesler in high school, some Michigan scouts came into the Wildcats' locker room after the Gibsonburg game during his senior year and asked him if he'd like to attend a Wolverines' game. “They had Michigan sweatshirts on and we knew who they were. He went to the game and then Bo sent Thom Darden of the Cleveland Browns to come speak to Jon on his off day. He told him, 'You can do it. Bo knows you can.' And that convinced Jon.” “Jon is very quiet, very humble. In high school, he was a gentle giant. He never wanted to hurt anyone,” said Deitemyer. “I remember when I went to Ohio State during my senior year; my friends couldn't believe that someone who played in our ‘po-dunk town’ with a graduating class of 104 could get to Michigan.”

His No. 75 jersey is on display in the main lobby at Woodmore High School along with the golden football from the National Football League.

Steve Barr, the athletic director at Woodmore, says the Super Bowl Honor Roll program asks a former Super Bowl participant to return to his alma mater to present a golden ball in honor of the 50th game coming up in 2016. “Jon was proactive with the NFL and had contacted them, letting them know he only comes back this way a couple times a year and wanted us to have the ball in a timely fashion so he could present it on one of his trips back here. And that worked out.” Ask anyone who was there — Barr says they’ll tell you it was a special experience to have a former NFL player, especially one who came from such a small town, return home. “I think any time you can have someone who has accomplished what Jon has, there is a message there for many different people, not just someone in sports. It takes hard work, a certain resolve, and dedication to accomplish the things he did in his profession,” Barr said. “And for him to still feel the way he does about his roots, which he touched on in his address to the crowd, is very special.”

CHOIR The Woodmore Choir program prides itself in nurturing lifelong musicians and offers six choirs. The choir has been led by directors Phyllis Humphrey, Kay VanHo, Bill Woycitzky, Craig Dietrich, Barbara Mauntler, Stacey Depner, Margo Park and Tracey Nycz. The high school choir began competing in the Ohio Musical Education Association (OMEA) adjudication in 2001 where they earned their first Superior rating under Depner. Since that time, the choirs have gone on to earn 21 additional Superior scores.

Men’s Choir - 2014

The choirs have been privileged to sing on two occasions with the Toledo Symphony. Every other year, the high school choirs go on tour to perform and experience the musical culture of a city. To date, they have traveled to Mackinac Island, Chicago, Nashville and New York City. Today, in grades 7-12, close to 300 students participate in one or more choir sections under the direction of Mrs. Tracey Nycz.

Karen Coffee received a “Superior” rating in 1978 and was selected to the All-Ohio Youth Choir.

BAND The Woodmore Band has produced hundreds of fine musicians. Students are able to begin band as early as fifth grade and by high school there are a variety of bands including Marching, Concert and Jazz. Throughout the first 49 years, the band has only had four head directors, including Richard Kondik (69-73), Bill Woycitzky (73-82), Howard Williams (82-07) and Kenneth Emerine (07-pres.). Concert Band has been involved in OMEA adjudication since the beginning, and first earned a “Superior” rating at State Contest in 1970. In total, Woodmore has earned 27 superior ratings within the category and have earned them in each decade since the 1970s.

CURRENT LANDSCAPE OF WOODMORE SCHOOLS Now in our 50th school year, Woodmore consists of two academic buildings, with students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade residing at the facility in Woodville while ninth graders through seniors go to the high school in Elmore. In the spring of 2017, WHS was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a Silver Star winner and was rated No. 1 in Ottawa and Sandusky counties and within the Northern Buckeye Conference by the publication. Out of more than 850 schools statewide, Woodmore checked in at No. 139. Nationally, Woodmore is rated in the Top 11 percent. The high school currently features six Advanced Placement (AP) courses along with five honors classes within English and mathematics. From a “specials perspective, WHS offers FFA, industrial technologies, various choirs, band, yearbook and journalism, among others. WHS is led by principal Mr. Jim Kieper. He is the second-longest tenured principal in Woodmore history behind original principal Richard Armbrust. The high school has 20 teachers along with one counselor, two secretaries, two custodians, the kitchen staff, athletic director and several student aides.

The building in Woodville is home to students in pre-kindergarten all the way through eighth grade.

In 2017, the senior class consisted of 87 students. Over the past 30 years, the average class size has remained right around 88.5 students per class. Located within the facility in Woodville, the middle school consists of grades 6-8 and is headed up by principal Mr. Kevin Ball, who also serves the district as the director of special education. Students are able to participate in several courses for high school credit and a number of electives that include art, band, choir, industrial tech and FFA. The middle school is staffed with 15 teachers, one counselor, shared custodians, a shared secretary, the kitchen staff and a number of aides that help students with special needs. The elementary school, also in Woodville, which includes grades pre-kindergarten through fifth, is led by Mr. Gary Haas. In 2017, the elementary produced a proficient or higher rating for 81 percent of its third graders, a number that stacks up very well against others in the area and across the state. Staffed by 28 teachers, a counselor, a shared secretary, shared custodians and approximately 10 aides (which varies based on the amount of need by students), the elementary educates more than 500 students on a daily basis.

THE

The high school (9-12) in Elmore largely consists of a building that was constructed in 1991 but also features a remaining section from 1950.
