State championships by Fertig, Meyer get top billing Eastwood junior Erik Fertig and senior Katelyn Meyer didn’t go to the Division II state meet by themselves, but when it came time to hand out medals, the Eagles’ duo stood alone atop their respective awards podium at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on June 1-2 in Columbus. Fertig and Meyer are this year’s Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press Co-Athletes of the Year. They are joined by their coaches, the husband-wife team of Brian and Nikki Sabo, The Press Co-Coaches of the Year. Fertig became the first Eastwood boy to win an individual state track and field title in eight years when he took first place in the discus throw. Meyer, who competed in three events at state for the second year in a row, earned the school’s first-ever girls individual track title when she won the high jump. Fertig’s winning throw came on his third attempt Saturday morning. “I was a little concerned at first that it would be too early,” said Fertig, who also competed in the shot put at state, “But there was so much adrenaline, you can’t even tell. It might as well have been the middle of the day. I’ve thrown that early in some summer meets and I did fine.” Fertig’s winning throw of 161-1 followed his opening throw of 151-2 and his second attempt of 156-7. “I couldn’t have done it without everyone helping me out,” he said. “Every time I stepped into the ring, I had my coaches and family and people from the community cheering me on. Their encouragement gave me fuel to throw the best I could.” Fertig’s mood following the state meet was a far cry from the previous week, when he threw 160-1 to take a distant second – by almost 11 feet, behind regional champion Noah Koch, a junior from Genoa. Koch finished 10th at the state meet with a throw of 145-10, after winning the regional with a career-best throw of 171-0. “I definitely knew I wasn’t the favorite going in,” Fertig said. “I just had to give it my all to get the best shot I could. I had a good week of practice - the throws were going far and everything was feeling loose. I honed in on some of the techniques I’ve been doing all season and I felt ready to go.” Fertig said taking second place at the regional “was a wake-up call.” It was his only loss in the discus all season. “I don’t think I was on auto pilot,” he said, “but it focused me in for the next week of practice.” The last Eastwood boy to win an individual state title was Justin Welch in the discus in 2010. said Fertig’s consistency stands out. “One thing about Erik, he is extremely consistent,” Sabo said. “All of his throws on certain days are all right around each other. He’s always throwing about 160, sometimes 166 and sometimes 158. He was relaxed and was able to get a good throw in on Saturday. He got a good throw in and it held up.” Fertig’s final throw was the last one for any of the finals competitors on Saturday. By then, he already knew he had taken first place. “I knew going into the ring that I was the state champion,” he said. “It was a blur from there and the realization of a dream that I had been working for since the seventh grade. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet that it happened.” Fertig finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 50-10. His season high was 53-6.

It was a new type of pressure I wasn’t used to. I think it helped get me ready for the discus competition on Saturday.” On Sunday, Fertig took first place in the state hammer throw, which is not sanctioned by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. His winning throw was 19511. “That was the fourth time I threw (in competition) this season,” Fertig said. “I won the Eastwood Relays and got second at the Centerville meet and at the Huber Heights Wayne Invitational. The 4x400 team of seniors Jacob Hahn and Isaac Emahiser, junior Alex Boyer and sophomore Nate McCauley-Benner finished in 10th place with a time of 3:24.00. They did not make the finals, but their time was a season best. “The times going into the 4x400, we felt if we PR’d we’d be right there,” Sabo said. “I thought we would make it in (to the finals) and we were close. I thought making the finals would be a bonus, but it’s a real pleasure to watch our 4x400 run at state.” The 4x800 team of seniors Billy Barker and Daniel Trombly, and juniors Alex Boyer and Jack Chappuies took 13th in 8:11.60.

Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press CoAthlete of the Year Katelyn Meyer is no stranger to state competition. Meyer, who will play volleyball at Bowling Green State University this fall, high-jumped 5-8 at the Division II state meet to take first place by one inch. That height tied Meyer’s career best, which she set at the Oak Harbor Invitational earlier this season. “All of the hard work I put in with my coaches and everything we worked toward paid off,” Meyer said, adding that she thought she was going to have to jump at least 5-9 to bring home the title. “I kept missing at 5-4 and 5-6 and 5-7,” she said. “I kept missing my first jump. I got 5-8 on my first try and I was a little bit sur-

prised. I was excited for me and my jump coach, Jack Corken. He has helped me so much. All of the coaches at Eastwood are phenomenal.” Meyer, who also competed in the 100-meter hurdles, took second place in the long jump with a top jump of 17-10. The winner, Van Wert senior Megan Braun, beat Meyer by one-quarter of an inch. “I was extremely happy,” Meyer said. “My first jump was not very good (16-11) and I was worried I wouldn’t even make it to finals. Anything I got from there would be really good. I thought it was kind of funny that we were so close to each other.” Meyer’s previous best jump this season was 18-0. “She was definitely happy to get second,” Eastwood girls coach Nikki Sabo said. “The girl who won, the two of them have been the top jumpers in Division II all year. We knew going in if they both
jumped well, it would be between the two of them.” Meyer didn’t make the finals in the 100 hurdles, placing 14th (15.64) in Friday’s prelims. She ran 14.99 at the regional meet. “I could have done better in that event,” Meyer said. “I felt bad because I wanted to keep competing with my hurdle coaches. After that race they told me that wasn’t the race I wanted, but they still had fun with me over the years. I was little disappointed that I couldn’t switch back over to hurdle mode.” Meyer placed third in the high jump, fourth in the long jump and 12th in the 100 hurdles at last year’s state meet.“The high jump is probably the best event out of the four she does,” Sabo said. “She’s just so deserving. She worked so hard and was extremely coachable. You couldn’t write a better ending to her high-jump career.”

Fowler continues climb to state runner-up By Mark Griffin Press Contributing Writer sports@presspublications.com Some people may consider going from 13th place to second place in the span of one year at the Division III state track and field meet to be a remarkable feat, but it’s just another day at the office for Northwood junior Trinity Fowler. Fowler, who ran a time of 2:20.92 to finish 13th at last year’s state meet, crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 2:15.64 to place second last Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. “She did not lose that (800) race all season,” Northwood coach Jeremy Lewin said. “She never lost in the mile or the twomile, and she ran the 300 hurdles a couple times and won those. She ran the 400 at the Gibsonburg Invitational and won that. It’s been a pretty phenomenal season for her.” The only girl to beat Fowler in the 800 this season was Mohawk senior Destini Oler, who won the state title in 2:15.10. “I was really prepared,” Fowler said. “My coaches did a really good job of doing hard workouts in the beginning of the season and slowly peaking me through the league meet. I went out (the first lap) in 1:05 and I was in third place. I was in good position. I didn’t go out too fast. I had good position for the whole race and I avoided a lot of the pack.” Fowler said she was “really happy” with second place. “At the beginning of the season I wouldn’t have thought I would have gotten second,” she said. “I was thinking maybe I had a shot at the podium. I was really happy with it. It went really good. The strategy I was supposed to do worked out really well.” Fowler won the 800 at the regional meet in Tiffin. She had also qualified to compete in the 1600 after winning that event at the district meet in Sandusky, but she and Lewin agreed that she should forego running the 1600 at regionals in order to focus on the 800. “We looked at the state-wide times and it would have been difficult for her to get on the podium in the mile,” Lewin said. “I left it up to her. I told her to train in whatever
Northwood junior distance runner and Division III 800 meter run state runnerup Trinity Fowler (center) with teammate Allison Vogl (right) and former teammate Kelsey Smothers (left). (Photo courtesy Kim Vogl) you want to do. She hemmed and hawed about it for a couple days. On Wednesday of the regional prelims, she said she just wanted to do the 800, so I said we’ll keep on doing what we do and she ended up winning the regional in the 800.” Fowler said she doesn’t regret not running the 1600 in Columbus. “We knew I could probably place pretty high at state (in the 800) if I did not run the mile,” she said. Lewin said no Northwood girl had ever placed first or second in an individual
event at the state meet. Fowler ran on the Rangers’ 4x400 relay that took seventh at state in 2016. “Trinity has never had anybody to push her in the 800 at all this year,” Lewin said. “We knew going in that she had time to drop. If she could run next to somebody who was as fast as the Mohawk girl and the girls from Minster, we knew she would have legitimate shot to get on the podium. To see a kid work as hard as she did all season and get to where she did, I was just ecstatic for her.”

The Press Box Nick Henneman to wrestle at Lourdes Nick Henneman (Clay) will transfer to Lourdes University this fall to wrestle, coach Dock Kelly III announced. Henneman arrives at Lourdes from Kent State University, where he sat out the 2017-2018 season as a redshirt. Competing unattached, he compiled a 21-4 record for the Golden Flashes, recording 10 falls, in his first taste of collegiate wrestling. “Nick is an incredibly skilled wrestler that is relentless with his offensive attacks,” Kelly said. “He is battle tested, and will have a huge impact on the Lourdes University wrestling program. He has the skill set, work ethic, and the wrestling IQ to contend for a national championship immediately.” Henneman was a four-year letter winner at Clay. He was a three-time state placer in Division I for the Eagles, and was twice named the Three Rivers Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Year. A two-time district runner-up, Henneman finished his prep career with a 163-34 record. He also excelled in the classroom, earning TRAC All-Academic honors four times. Henneman should have four seasons of eligibility remaining upon arriving at Lourdes.

Woodmore relay makes best of at-large bid By Mark Griffin Press Contributing Writer sports@presspublications.com In the Division III girls state track meet, Woodmore’s 4x800 relay team of freshmen Greta Bauder, Ava Beam and Olivia Thatcher, and junior Nora LaMunyon finished 16th in 10:01.99. The relay received an at-large bid to race at the state meet. Thatcher also placed 15th in the 3200 (11:59.72). “That was close to her PR, like fractions of a second off,” Woodmore coach Jim McMahon said. “She ran a good race.”Woodmore senior Carly Rothert was
unable to make the finals in the 100 hurdles, placing 15th in the prelims with a time of 15.87. “I was proud of her,” McMahon said. “She’s had a crazy path. She barely did any track last year after getting a concussion in soccer. The fact she was able to make it back to states was incredible.” Sophomore Claire Rothert was unable to advance to the finals in the 300 hurdles, finishing 16th in the preliminaries (47.81). Woodmore’s boys team had two state qualifiers in senior Jeremy Schiavone in the 200 and sophomore Cole Sotak in the pole vault. Schiavone finished 17th (23.22) in the 200 prelims and did not advance to the
finals. Sotak placed 11th with a top vault of 13-0. His career best was 13-6 earlier this season. “Cole vaults year round and I know he’s motivated,” McMahon said. “We expect him to be back there next year, too. We didn’t get anyone on the podium, but I was happy and our kids were proud.” Genoa’s Alexis Bryer and Jenna Henneman competed in the D-III girls meet. Bryer, a junior, placed 10th in the shot put with a throw of 37-2.50. Henneman, a senior, placed 12th in the pole vault with a vault of 10-0. Genoa junior Noah Koch finished 10th in the boys discus with a throw of 145-10.
Craig Mintz is undefeated in 410 sprint action at Fremont Speedway in 2018. The Gibsonburg driver led all 30 laps of the feature race on Saturday, June 2 to claim his fourth straight win. It wasn't easy for the two-time Fremont Speedway track champion. Kody Kinser closed when Mintz got hung up in lapped traffic after taking the white flag. Unfortunately Kinser, who was on Mintz' rear bumper, got off the cushion in turn two and into the fence, ending his bid for the victory. Mintz had to then survive two restarts for the green, white, checkered finish to score his 14th career win at "The Track That Action Built." Mintz padded his lead in the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics as he seeks to add a third series title. "First I feel bad for DJ (Foos). I didn't mean to get into him. For us to keep rolling after we hit him that hard...I'm just going to keep riding this wave," Mintz said. About those two restarts with two laps to go? "Me and Nate Dussel have raced since we were Brinley's (Mintz' daughter) age. He knows how I'm going to do things...he's been there before. So I just tried to do something different. I sat there on that red trying to figure out what I was going to do and how I'm going to get that jump because I know he's going to be pretty good. I haven't thanked Paul Kistler and Kistler Engines enough.. this bullet is one heck of a motor," Mintz continued in the Engine Pro Victory Lane. "I was struggling in lapped traffic. There was just no where for me to go. I'd try to stick my nose in there and that's not against them...they are supposed to race too, they're not just going to pull over for you...this isn't Formula 1. I hate to see that happen to Kody. He's a good guy. I communicate with him quite a bit. As a matter of fact one of his companies is on our race car," Mintz concluded beside his No. 09. (— Brian Liskai/Fremont Speedway)

Bloomer, Sievert, relays lead Rockets By Yaneek Smith and Mark Griffin sports@presspublications.com The Oak Harbor boys and girls track teams did not score a lot of points at the state tournament, but they certainly made their presence felt. In Division II, Oak Harbor’s boys 4x100 and 4x200 relays competed along with junior Brandon Elmes in the 110 hurdles. Seniors Andy Buderer, Nick Damron and Garret Duty, and junior Ajay Riechman took seventh in the 4x100 prelims (43.51) and placed fourth in the finals (43.49). The 4x200 relay of sophomore Aidan Barton, Buderer, Duty and Riechman placed 15th (1:31.31) and did not advance to the finals Elmes took 12th in the 110 hurdles in 15.16. In the D-II girls meet, Lake senior Makenzie Briggs took 12th (46.21) in the prelims of the 300 hurdles and did not make the finals. Oak Harbor junior Peyton Bloomer took sixth in the high jump with a jump of 5-3, and sophomore teammate Hope Sievert took 14th in the 1600 (5:22.02). The Rockets’ 4x200 relay of senior Abby Dornbusch, junior Cora Domanowski and freshmen Elayna Krupp and Abby Below finished 12th in 1:46.60. The 4x400 relay of Below, Dornbusch, Krupp and Sievert took sixth (4:02.12) in the prelims and finished eighth (4:07.36) in the finals. It was the culmination of good seasons for both teams. The girls won their ninth consecutive Sandusky Bay Conference (Bay Division) title while the boys came in second. Since winning the SBC in 2015, the boys team has finished no worse than third at the league tournament. This season was the second in a row that saw the boys team make some noise at the state meet as Isaiah Jefferson finished seventh in 10.97 in the 100 and the 4x100 relay team came in eighth in 2017. “The boys team started preparing for this season a long time ago and to see the hard work pay off was awesome. I can’t say enough about how well the seniors led this season,” said Oak Harbor boys track coach Andy Augsburger. “It was fitting to send off our three seniors with a fourth-place finish at state. Garret (Duty), Andy (Buderer) and Nick (Damron) work their butts off for this program and our team. The athletes were highly motivated and not just satisfied with making it to state again and wanted to get on the podium. We had seven athletes who were competing for spots on the two sprint relays. What an amazing year. “It shows that there are coaches, athletes, parents and the community getting excited about track and field at Oak Harbor. We had a huge turnout this year with 54 athletes, 18 of whom were freshmen. The coaches work hard to make sure the athletes get coached in their events and show improvement no matter where they start. We had our biggest turnout for winter lifting and conditioning this past year. “It’s been amazing to watch what the program is doing. I am so happy with the success that we have been having, but I am even more happy with the atmosphere with our entire track and field family.” A major turning point for the program came three years ago when the Rockets won the SBC title. “It showed the athletes that if they put their mind to it, they can compete with anyone,” Augsburger said. “The class of 2018 has left the program better. I hope every athlete who comes out for track and field has a positive experience and has some success with a PR. I want them to see how much we care about this sport and the school. We accomplished so many things this year winning (five invitationals). The future looks bright. “We had a lot of parent involvement, which has been amazing. And we have a great group of coaches like John McKitrick, John Lucas, Gina Warnke, Bill Blue, Donna Hetrick, Steve Wierich, Eric Buckman, Tracy Barnum, Tiffany Wojotowitz and Rob Hawn.”

Clay alumni — they can still play By J. Patrick Eaken Press Sports Editor sports@presspublications.com Clay alumni gathered to do what so many are known for — play baseball. This year’s Clay Alumni Baseball Game had players dating back to the class of 1960. They met on June 1 at John Ousky Field inside Oregon’s William P. Coontz Recreation Center, picked two captains, chose sides, and the fun began. The Clay Alumni Game was started in the late 1970s by then-coach Dick Kandick,. It took a hiatus and was later resurrected by then-Clay coach Garry Isbell in the early 21st Century. The game is now organized by 1974 graduate Gerry Wasserman, who still plays. “The intention of the alumni game would be as they do with the basketball program, where the alumni play against the current school players,” Wasserman said. “I organize it because I enjoy getting together with the alumni, seeing the varying skill levels of players. And I still get a kick out of hitting a baseball — or at least trying.” Clay has been playing varsity baseball since 1928 and is among the top five in the state for all-time wins, so you can imagine there was plenty of talent — including former NCAA Division I players and some who played minor league baseball. Clay is also among the top four in the state in getting its alumni into the ranks of professional baseball. This year, the two oldest making an appearance were from the class of 1960 — Jim West and Tom Wallake. The game was once again umpired by 1975 Clay graduate Jim Foulke. On the other side of the table, there were several current Clay High players and even collegiate players participating, also. The Ensign Team, captained by Mason Ensign (2017) defeated the Curry Team, captained by Kevin Curry (2017), 6-4. Last year’s alumni game losing pitcher, Eric Heintschel (1989), who played at the University of Michigan, was this year’s winner. Last year he began the game tossing what could be called “batting practice” to some older alumni, but this year he showed he could still bring it. Heintschel, the Ensign Team’s starter, struck out one batter, walked two and allowed one run over two innings. Nick Sheehan (2011) came in for relief, walking two and giving up three runs over one inning. Because of lightning, the game was shortened to 3½ innings with the winning team getting an extra bat, but they did not score. Since it is an alumni game we are going to keep the stats from the fourth. Why not? For some of the older players, 3½ innings seemed to be enough, especially when both teams are virtually batting around every inning. So, let’s give everyone credit for everything they did. The Ensign Team broke the game open with a six-run second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Sheehan was 3-for-4 and scored a run, Clay baseball coach and former Youngstown State standout Jim Phillips

Winning pitcher Eric Heintschel takes the mound. (1989) (Press photo by Russ Lytle/Facebook.com/RussLytle/RHP) (2001) was 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch twice and scored, and Heintschel was 2-for-3 with a run, two RBIs, and he reached on all four plate appearances. Also for the Ensign Team, Nick Roman (2011) was 2-for-3 with a triple, walk, and run and Dan Steingraber (1998) was 2-for-2, reaching all three plate appearances, walked and had an RBI. Kyle Daly (2017) went 0-for4, but he reached twice and scored. For the “Steph” Curry Team, as it was referred to over the public address system, Christian Orr (2017) was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly RBI and a double. Palmer Yenrick (2019) had a base hit, walked and scored, Braedyn Gwin (2017) was 2-for-2 and scored, and Wasserman had a base hit in the third inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Jason Halka (1998) and Andrew Kuns both reached on a walk, with Halka scoring and Kuns getting an RBI. Curry went 0-for-2 at the plate. Yenrick started on the mound for the Curry Team, and even though he gave up five hits, six runs, and took the loss, he struck out five and walked no one. Gwin took over in the third, walking two, striking out one, and giving up two hits but allowing no runs. However, like Halka says, it is not about the stats, although you did see some competitive spirit. There are other reasons these guys keep playing the game. “I always enjoy coming out every year to see former players along with teammates and friends I’ve met from the past alumni games,” said Halka, who coached the Clay junior varsity in 2014 and Clay’s summer Junior ACME team from 1999-2002.
