Inspired by the work of Realist painters such as Gustave Courbet and François Bonvin, Henri-Edmond Cross’s earliest paintings were compositions in dark, somber colors. Following his involvement with the avant-gardist circle around Georges Seurat, he gradually adopted the Neo-Impressionist technique and began to develop a unique visual vocabulary. After his move to the Mediterranean coast in 1891, Cross’s palette became increasingly lighter, resulting in dazzlingly colorful landscapes, genre paintings, and compositions that are overlaid with mythological and allegorical allusions. This volume traces Cross’s artistic trajectory through all stages of his prolific career and situates his masterful approach to color and light within the broader context of the European avant-garde of his time. A pioneer of installation art in India, Sundaram started off as a painter in the late 1960s but his desire to break free of the limits imposed by the pictorial frame only came to fruition in the early 1990s, when Sundaram began making works that no longer hinged on the specificity of a medium. This change in artistic direction coincided with his interest in exploring the materiality of a range of substances, whether artisanal or industrial. Sundaram’s choice of materials has had a thematic resonance in the different bodies of work that he has made over the last twenty-five years. His practice keenly registers the civic dimension and political import of art. History, memory, and archive are the overarching concerns of his work. In the wake of World War I and the German Revolution of November 1918, a group of German artists, architects, composers, and writers banded together to work toward a democratic society that would reflect the values of the Weimar constitution. Some of the most celebrated artists of the period were members or participated in their numerous exhibitions, including Otto Dix, Max Ernst, Walter Gropius, George Grosz, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, László Moholy-Nagy, Hannah Höch, and Piet Mondrian. In an effort to reflect the liberal values of Germany’s newly established socialist government, the group was open to all styles, from Cubism, Futurism, and Expressionism to Dada, Abstraction, and New Objectivity. Until their dissolution in 1935, when they were banned by the Nazi regime, they exhibited nearly 3,000 works throughout the country. This book focuses on three distinct periods over the course of the group’s history. Each section features essays and a series of elegantly reproduced illustrations. Presenting over one hundred works, this stunning compilation offers new perspectives on the avant-garde art of Weimar Germany, its socio-utopian ideals, and its attempts to build bridges inside the artistic community as well as between the artists and their fellow citizens.

Focusing on buildings designed by Bauhaus members from 1919 to 1933, this book features some 65 famous and lesser-known building projects in Germany, Vienna, Barcelona, Prague, and Budapest by architects including Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Arranged chronologically, Bauhaus Architecture offers informative commentary along with photographs, taken especially for this book. Engels’ photographs show many buildings in their newly restored condition and reflect the full range of Bauhaus architecture, one of the most influential schools of architecture in the 20th century. HANS ENGELS is a renowned photographer whose work has been published in numerous books and magazines and has appeared in exhibitions throughout Europe. In 1974 the photojournalist and art photographer Steve Kahn began a series of provocative black-and-white Polaroids of porn-industry models posing in seedy Hollywood apartments. What began as an exploration of staged photography and portraiture evolved over the next three years into “The Hollywood Suites,” a multi-faceted conceptual project in which Kahn turned his lens away from the models to deconstruct their seemingly mundane and monotonous surroundings. Endlessly fascinating, Kahn’s series touches on myriad themes including bondage, containment, isolation, and the poetics of absence. This volume includes more than 100 works arranged in chronological groupings based on the original Polaroid film sessions and features essays that offer a scholarly assessment of a groundbreaking work.

Anna Atkins (1799–1871) came of age in Victorian England, a particularly fertile environment for learning and scientific discovery. Guided by her father, a prominent scientist, Atkins was inspired by William Henry Fox Talbot to take up photography and was friends with Sir John Herschel, who invented the cyanotype photographic process in 1842. The next year, Atkins began making cyanotypes in an effort to illustrate and distribute information about her herbarium. The result was Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, the first book to be illustrated with photographs. A decade later, she and her friend Anne Dixon expanded their visual inquiry to flowering plants, feathers, and other subjects. This volume is a revised and expanded edition of a long out-of-print monograph that first secured Atkins’s place in the history of photography. It draws upon years of careful research and sets Atkins and her work in the proper context. Supplementary texts shed new light on her productions and on the cyanotype process, which is still used by artists today. The photographs themselves—ethereal, deeply hued, and wonderfully intricate—are brought to life with exquisite reproductions that are certain to win Atkins a new generation of followers.
